• Starting self hosted WCF services on demand

  Is it possible to start self hosted WCF services on demand? I see two options to accomplish this: Insert a listener in the self hosted WCF's web server and spin up a service host when a request for a specific service comes in, before WCF starts looking for the existence of that endpoint; or Integrate a web service in process, start a service host for a request if it isn't running yet and redirect the request to that service host (like I suspect IIS does). I cannot use IIS or WAS because the web services need to run in process with the UI business logic. Which is feasible and how can I accomplish this? EDIT: I cannot just start the service hosts because there are hundreds, most (about 95%) of which are (almost) never used but need to be available. This is for exposing a business logic layer of 900 entities.

• C# DLL Deployed in COM+. Error while accessing the methods.

  I have the C# Dll (ABService) deployed in COM + and my os Is windows 2008. I have given the strong name for this dll and its dependent dll’s When I access the method of this dll through localhost or if I add the reference to the client project the method are executed successfully. Simply if I access the dll from the same machine with the reference it is working. So I think there is no problem with the way I deployed in the COM +. I have the doubt whether I have the problem in OS and Visual Studio 2008 combination. I have built all the dll with the Visual Studio 2008 with Target cpu as x86 and targert framework as 2.0. • Ruby on Rails with_option cannot call class method

One of our customer sent a bulk mail with 2390 email. • Is it feasible and useful to auto-generate some code of unit tests?

  Earlier today I have come up with an idea, based upon a particular real use case, which I would want to have checked for feasability and usefulness. This question will feature a fair chunk of Java code, but can be applied to all languages running inside a VM, and maybe even outside. While there is real code, it uses nothing language-specific, so please read it mostly as pseudo code. The idea Make unit testing less cumbersome by adding in some ways to autogenerate code based on human interaction with the codebase. I understand this goes against the principle of TDD, but I don't think anyone ever proved that doing TDD is better over first creating code and then immediatly therafter the tests. This may even be adapted to be fit into TDD, but that is not my current goal. Writing these tests is not fun, you need to ensure a number of conditions and you check whether it really returns false, this can be extended to performAction, where an exception needs to be thrown in that case. The goal of my idea is to generate those tests, by indicating (through GUI of IDE hopefully) that you want to generate tests based on a specific branch. The implementation by example User clicks on "Generate code for branch if (handCardIndex >= hand.getCapacity())". Now the tool needs to find a case where that holds. (I haven't added the relevant code as that may clutter the post ultimately) To invalidate the branch, the tool needs to find a handCardIndex and hand.getCapacity() such that the condition >= holds. It needs to construct a Player with a Hand that has a capacity of at least 1. It notices that the capacity private int of Hand needs to be at least 1. It searches for ways to set it to 1. Fortunately it finds a constructor that takes the capacity as an argument. It uses 1 for this. Some more work needs to be done to succesfully construct a Player instance, involving the creation of objects that have constraints that can be seen by inspecting the source code. It has found the hand with the least capacity possible and is able to construct it. Now to invalidate the test it will need to set handCardIndex = 1. It constructs the test and asserts it to be false (the returned value of the branch) What does the tool need to work? In order to function properly, it will need the ability to scan through all source code (including JDK code) to figure out all constraints. Optionally this could be done through the javadoc, but that is not always used to indicate all constraints. It could also do some trial and error, but it pretty much stops if you cannot attach source code to compiled classes. Then it needs some basic knowledge of what the primitive types are, including arrays. And it needs to be able to construct some form of "modification trees". The tool knows that it needs to change a certain variable to a different value in order to get the correct testcase. Hence it will need to list all possible ways to change it, without using reflection obviously. What this tool will not replace is the need to create tailored unit tests that tests all kinds of conditions when a certain method actually works. It is purely to be used to test methods when they invalidate constraints. My questions: Is creating such a tool feasible? Would it ever work, or are there some obvious problems? Would such a tool be useful? Is it even useful to automatically generate these testcases at all? Could it be extended to do even more useful things? Does, by chance, such a project already exist and would I be reinventing the wheel? If not proven useful, but still possible to make such thing, I will still consider it for fun. If it's considered useful, then I might make an open source project for it depending on the time. For people searching more background information about the used Player and Hand classes in my example, please refer to this repository. At the time of writing the PutMonsterOnFieldAction has not been uploaded to the repo yet, but this will be done once I'm done with the unit tests.

• Fully custom validation error message with Rails

  Using Rails I'm trying to get an error message like "The song field can't be empty" on save. Doing the following: validates_presence_of :song_rep_xyz, :message => "can't be empty" ... only displays "Song Rep XYW can't be empty", which is not good because the title of the field is not user friendly. How can I change the title of the field itself ? I could change the actual name of the field in the database, but I have multiple "song" fields and I do need to have specific field names. I don't want to hack around rails' validation process and I feel there should be a way of fixing that.

• Accommodating null values in a list?

The script is iterating through a list trying to calc a running total of the values of all objects in the list. Some or all of these objects' values may be null.   Using Javascript / jQuery, I'm trying to build a "combination checker" that will take the values of three (but can be more) dropdown lists and filter the options based on a supplied list of allowed combinations. For example: DROPDOWNS Field 1: - value_1 - value_2 Field 2: - value_3 Field 3: - value_4 - value_5 COMBINATIONS - value_1, value_3, value_5 - value_1, value_3, value_4 - value_2, value_3, value_5 When a user selects Field 3 - value_4, the unavailable options will be disabled - ie, Field 1 - value_2 (there is no combination that allows value_2 and value_4 to be selected together). It would be really great if someone could provide some pointers on how this can be achieved or just provide a fresh perspective - I'm going round in circles on this one!

• How to efficiently implement a blocking call with Rails, while letting the client wait for the reply

  We have a web service written in Rails. The API is published and we cannot change it. Our app communicates with a remote web service that sometimes hangs or takes several seconds to reply. Client -> Our Web Service -> Remote Web Service Currently, if the remote web service hangs for 5 seconds, one of our rails processes on our web service also hangs with it, which is what we need to avoid. I've seen things such as mod-x-sendfile, modporter, and delayed jobs, but the best I can tell, they all assume the client is not waiting for an answer. Since the API is already established, we cannot tell the client "I'm attempting to do what you want, check back later for the answer." The best option we have come up with so far is to add a second, non-rails web server running eventmachine to process these particular calls. Is there a better way?

• Multiple windows services in a single project = mystery

  I'm having a bizarre issue that I haven't seen before and I'm thinking it MUST be something simple that I'm not seeing in my code. I have a project with 2 windows services defined. One I've called DataSyncService, the other SubscriptionService. Both are added to the same project installer. Both use a timer control from System.Timers. If I start both services together, they seem to work fine. The timers elapse at the appropriate time and everything looks okay. However, if I start either service individually, leaving the other stopped, everything goes haywire. The timer elapses constantly and on the wrong service. In other words, if I start the DataSyncService, the SubscriptionService timer elapses over and over. ...which is obviously strange. The setup is similar to what I've done in the past so I'm really stumped. I even tried deleting both service and starting over but it doesn't seem to make a difference. At this point, I'm thinking I've made a simple error in the way I'm defining the services and my brain just won't let me see it. It must be creating some sort of threading issue that causes one service to race when the other is stopped. Here the code.... • Windows Phone 7 Application + WCF + SSL + Username Authentication

  Hello, I have developed a test service with WCF, which I try to consume from a Windows Phone 7 Application, however when calling a method from the service I get a weird exception: There was no endpoint listening at https://server/Service.svc that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. The WCF service uses a custom binding with UserNameOverTransport authentication and SSL. For the authorization I am using an implementation of the UserNamePasswordValidator. If I try to consume the service from a console or silverlight application (cross domain policy is enabled) - it works fine (authorization as well). And the most weird thing is that the ServiceReferences.ClientConfig file generated for the WP7 App is exactly the same as the config file generated for the silverlight application. I have no idea what is wrong with my service...

  Hello! I've made a content type for links, I'm trying to make a link directory. People only have to submit the link, description is voluntary. If no description is entered, I want the header that says "description" to disappear. The description field is the node body. Right now my snippet looks like this <?php if (!empty($node->body)) {?> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-link-archive"> <h3>Description</h3> <?php print $node->content['body']['#value'] ?></div> <?php }?> I expect this to check if node body is not empty, and if it isn't it'll print what's there. The problem is that the Description header is still printed out even if the node body is empty. Can anyone see what's wrong?

  i want to add dynamic columns in a mysql table. but i dont know exactly how. i want to let the user add some columns (fields) in a thread. eg. let him add a integer field and a value (eg. price: 199) or a string field and a value (eg. name: teddybear). the user can add as many field/value-pairs as he wants. i thought i could create a many-to-many table: thread <- thread_field <- field thread: id, title thread_field: field_id, thread_id, value field: id, name is this a good structure? but in this way i have to set a specific column type of thread_field.value. either its an integer or a string. i want to have the possibility to have it dymanic, let the user choose. how can i do this? thanks!

• Calling a WCF WebService in PHP via wsHttpBinding.

  I have a WCF webservice I can connect to it via basicHttp, but not wsHttp. I try to conenct to it via wshttp via the following: $service = new SoapClient ("http://service.companyname.local:6666/Service/?wsdl", array( "location" => "http://service.companyname.local:6666/Service/WCF", "trace" => true, 'soap_version' => SOAP_1_2 ) ); The call to the SoapClient constructor returns fine. When I try to call one using $client-FunctionName, the page just sits there loading for quite a while, and eventually returns the error "Error Fetching http headers". What exactly is this supposed to mean and how do I fix it? (Consuming the service from .Net client works perfectly.)

  I think the best way to explain this is to tell you what I have. I have two tables A and B both have columns Field1 and Field2. However Field 2 is not populated in table B I want to populate field 2 of table B with field 2 of table A where field 1 of table A matches field 1 of table B. something like update tableB set Field2 = tableA.field2 where tablea.field1 = tableb.field1. The reason this may seem so odd and obscure is that I'm tyring to do an inital data load form an old database to a new one. please let me know if you need clarification

• Java: How do I get the IP of the local interface that can reach a remote IP?

  I have a Java application that registers a server component in a service provider, and then sends the service name to a client. The client uses the service name to get an address out of the service provider to the server. However, the server has several interfaces only 1 of which the client get get at, so the service must be registered with the right IP. We discovered the client through a broadcast, so I have the client IP and an Enumeration of the computers network interfaces. How do I match the IP to an interface, not knowing what the netmask of the client IP is? Spontaneously I imagine turning all the addresses to ints and chomping the local ips with their netmask and looking for a 'best match', but I wonder if there is a better way? (this is an enterprise(tm) solution, so cutting out the service provider isn't an option, at least not w/o a political campaign first ;) )

  Hi all, I was doing some self learning on CakePHP 1.26 with Mysql 5. I got a simple table with only one field and had applied "Not Null" to this field. This field in the table was corresponding to a Input text box in a HTML form. I tried not to enter anything into the Input text field, and then I saw that empty data was able to be stored into the Table even if "Not Null" had been applied to this field. I am confused of this result. Could you help me please?

• Cisco 891w multiple VLAN configuration

  I'm having trouble getting my guest network up. I have VLAN 1 that contains all our network resources (servers, desktops, printers, etc). I have the wireless configured to use VLAN1 but authenticate with wpa2 enterprise. The guest network I just wanted to be open or configured with a simple WPA2 personal password on it's own VLAN2. I've looked at tons of documentation and it should be working but I can't even authenticate on the guest network! I've posted this on cisco's support forum a week ago but no one has really responded. I could really use some help. So if anyone could take a look at the configurations I posted and steer me in the right direction I would be extremely grateful. • Anatomy of a .NET Assembly - Signature encodings

  If you've just joined this series, I highly recommend you read the previous posts in this series, starting here, or at least these posts, covering the CLR metadata tables. Before we look at custom attribute encoding, we first need to have a brief look at how signatures are encoded in an assembly in general. Signature types There are several types of signatures in an assembly, all of which share a common base representation, and are all stored as binary blobs in the #Blob heap, referenced by an offset from various metadata tables. The types of signatures are: Method definition and method reference signatures. Field signatures Property signatures Method local variables. These are referenced from the StandAloneSig table, which is then referenced by method body headers. Generic type specifications. These represent a particular instantiation of a generic type. Generic method specifications. Similarly, these represent a particular instantiation of a generic method. All these signatures share the same underlying mechanism to represent a type Representing a type All metadata signatures are based around the ELEMENT_TYPE structure. This assigns a number to each 'built-in' type in the framework; for example, Uint16 is 0x07, String is 0x0e, and Object is 0x1c. Byte codes are also used to indicate SzArrays, multi-dimensional arrays, custom types, and generic type and method variables. However, these require some further information. Firstly, custom types (ie not one of the built-in types). These require you to specify the 4-byte TypeDefOrRef coded token after the CLASS (0x12) or VALUETYPE (0x11) element type. This 4-byte value is stored in a compressed format before being written out to disk (for more excruciating details, you can refer to the CLI specification). SzArrays simply have the array item type after the SZARRAY byte (0x1d). Multidimensional arrays follow the ARRAY element type with a series of compressed integers indicating the number of dimensions, and the size and lower bound of each dimension. Generic variables are simply followed by the index of the generic variable they refer to. There are other additions as well, for example, a specific byte value indicates a method parameter passed by reference (BYREF), and other values indicating custom modifiers. Some examples... To demonstrate, here's a few examples and what the resulting blobs in the #Blob heap will look like. Each name in capitals corresponds to a particular byte value in the ELEMENT_TYPE or CALLCONV structure, and coded tokens to custom types are represented by the type name in curly brackets. • WebDav issue with Mac OS X 10.5.3 onwards

  Hi, We upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5.3 and getting problem when uploading files (PUT) to a webdav server (the server is Apache running on a Windows environment). When we drag and drop on to a webdav folder using Finder we get a -36 error. When looking at the stack trace of the web server the problem is due to INVALID CRLF or some times getting the following error. Both the stack point to error when copying the stream.
