• ASP.NET Applications Requests/Sec suddenly jumps to a value of about 70 million/sec. on 8 core web

  We are doing performance testing of an ASP.NET web application with VSTS 2008. We start with 2000 users and slowly ramp up to 5000 users (reaches this user load at around 2.5 hours after the tests start, after this we stay at this user load). The total test duration is of about 6 hours During these runs we have found that the counter Requests/Sec (under category ASP.NET applications) suddenly spikes to a values of 36-72 millions !!!. This keeps on happening intermittently i.e we see this issue once in every 3 performance runs that we give on the same application. In our testing environment we have 4 web servers and interestingly enough we have found that this issue occurs only in the 8 core web servers. Summarizing ... Issue : The counter Requests/Sec (under category ASP.NET Applications) suddenly jumps to a value of about 70 million/sec. on 8 core web servers. This results in an increase in SQL server connections opened by the application. Response time goes for a toss. Error rates also show similar behaviour. However the counter ISAPI Extention Requests/sec does not show any abnormal increase. The graph of this counter almost overlaps with that of counter Requests/Sec till the time of the appearance of the spike.When the spike appears , this counter (ISAPI Extention Requests/sec) actually shows a drop. Test Settings : Performance test run with Visual Studio Team System 2008. Soak test run for 6 hours. Maximum user load 5000 users. This is load is attained at about 2.5 hours into the run and mainted for remaining duration.(i.e for around 3.5 more hrs) This issue is reproducible though happens intermittently. (i.e occurs one in three or four runs) Test Environment : Web site deployed on 4 Web Servers (Windows Server 2003). Of these 2 are 4 core machines and the remaining 2 are 8 core ones. .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installed on all 4 web servers. Application hosted on IIS 6.0 run in Worker process isolation mode.

• ActiveX control loading but not activating correctly (only when using in Reg Free COM)

  I have an ActiveX control (created using C#) that I am adding to a form in Visual FoxPro using late binding. It works without problems when I register the control. I want to use reg free COM and created necessary manifest files. Now it load and displays in an inactive state until I double click or programatically activate it. I don't think it has anything to do with the reg free com manifest files. However is there something I need to do to set it up before/after making the late binding call AddObject()? this.AddObject('OleControl1', 'oleControl', 'SomeCompany.SomeOleControl') When I check the OleTypeAllowed Property of the OleControl created by AddObject() it is 1 (Embedded OLE object) instead of -2 (ActiveX object). So the OleControl got instantiated to the wrong type. I also tried the following: DEFINE(d) a subclass of OleControl and set the property OleTypeAllowed = -2. Used late binding to load the control. It did not work as required. The OleTypeAllowed came back as 1 Registered the ActiveX control. Added the ActiveX control to the project as a subclass using the visual editor. Unregistered the control. Used late binding to load the control. It did not work as required. The OleTypeAllowed came back as 1. Is it possible to load the OleControl as a ActiveX control? Any input from VB that I can convert to FoxPro would also be appreciated.

• Unable to connect to UNC share with WindowsIdentity.Impersonate, but works fine using LogonUser

  Hopefully I'm not missing something obvious here, but I have a class that needs to create some directories on a UNC share and then move files to the new directory. When we connect using LogonUser things work fine with no errors, but when we try and use the user indicated by Integrated Windows authentication we run into problems. Here's some working and non-working code to give you an idea what is going on. It looks like: A first chance exception of type 'System.NotSupportedException' occurred in PresentationCore.dll The number of exceptions generates equals the number of thumbnails to be generated. Using "trial and error" I have isolated the problem to: BitmapFrame.Create(bi) Removing that line (makes my function useless) also removes the exception. I have not found any explanation to this,,, or a better method to create thumbnails i a background thread. Can anyone help me? //lasse

  I just started using a PHP framework, Kohana (V2.3.4) and I am trying to set up a config file for each of my controllers. I never used a framework before, so obviously Kohana is new to me. I was wondering how I should set up my controllers to read my config file. For example, I have an article controller and a config file for that controller. • Using a handle to collect output from CreateProcess()

  Hi I am using CreateProcess() to run an external console application in Windows from my GUI application. I would like to somehow gather the output to know whether there were errors. Now I know I have to do something with hStdOutput, but I fail to understand what. I am new to c++ and an inexperienced programmer and I actually don't know what to do with a handle or how to light a pipe. How do I get the output to some kind of variable (or file)? • Table Design For SystemSettings, Best Model

  Someone suggested moving a table full of settings, where each column is a setting name(or type) and the rows are the customers & their respective settings for each setting. ID | IsAdmin | ImagePath ------------------------------ 12 | 1          | \path\to\images 34 | 0          | \path\to\images The downside to this is every time we want a new setting name(or type) we alter the table(via sql) and add the new (column)setting name/type. Then update the rows(so that each customer now has a value for that setting). The new table design proposal. The proposal is to have a column for setting name and another column for setting. But something doesn't feel right about the second design, it looks bad, but I can't come up with any arguments against it. Am I wrong?

• How do I find the most “Naturally" direct route using A-star (A*)

  I have implemented the A* algorithm in AS3 and it works great except for one thing. Often the resulting path does not take the most “natural” or smooth route to the target. In my environment the object can move diagonally as inexpensively as it can move horizontally or vertically. • install linux guest on windows host using a .iso file on vmserver 2.0

  I have done this in vmserver 1.0. I set the Cd to point to the .iso file. Then I start the vm and it starts to install. I am on the summary screen. I have created a VM. I go to CD/DVD - edit I change the radio button to Host Medio Then I select ISO Image and Browse. Here is the problem: Then in my browser I get Inventory - Virtual Machine (directory) I don't know where that directory is. I have my ISO's in a folder on my desktop. I can't browse to my desktop. When I try to just put in a path such as c:\mydesktop\mylinuxdirectory\linux1.iso The following problems have been found:OKThe ISO Image File Path must be a valid file path in the format: "[datastore] /path/to/isoimage.iso". so how do I browse to an ISO? I can add the iso after I start the VM, but by then its too late and the VM says no Operating System installed.

• FlashBuilder 4 and Zend Framework error

  I am trying to use adobe flash builder 4 with a php service. I had it set up an older macbook running leopard, but just tried to set it up on my new laptop running snow leopard. I did all the same steps.. set the Flex Server to be PHP, set the web root and url. Then I go to Data-Connect To PHP and point it to a php file I have in my web root. It says it needs to install Zend, and claims it does so successfully, but then when I try to continue, I get an error. I don't understand.. this same setup works on my older laptop. • Problem using custom HttpHandler to process requests for both .aspx and non-extension pages in IIS7

  I am trying to process both ".aspx" and non-extension page requests (i.e. both contact.aspx and /contact/) using a custom HttpHandler in IIS7. My handler works just fine in either one case or the other, but as soon as I try to process both cases, it only works for one. Please see Handlers snippet from my web.config below: If i keep only mapping to "*.aspx" then all .aspx requests are processed correctly, but obviously extensionless requests won't work: <add name="AllPages.ASPX" path="*.aspx" verb="*" type="Test.PageHandlerFactory, Test" preCondition="" /> If i change the mapping to "*" then all extensionless requests are processed correctly, but ".aspx" requests that should still be handled by this handler stop working. Note that i added the StaticFiles entry in order to process files that are on disk like images, css, js, etc. <add name="WebResource" path="WebResource.axd" verb="GET" type="System.Web.Handlers.AssemblyResourceLoader" /> <add name="StaticFiles" verb="GET,HEAD" path="*.*" type="System.Web.StaticFileHandler" resourceType="File" /> <add name="AllPages" path="*" verb="*" type="Test.PageHandlerFactory, Test" preCondition="" /> The crazy thing is that when i load an ".aspx" request (with the 2nd configuration shown) IIS7 gives a 404 not found error. The error also says that the request is processed by the StaticFiles handler. But I made sure to add resourceType="File" to the StaticFileHandler in order to avoid this. According to MS this means the request is only for "physical files on disk". Am i misreading/interpreting the "on disk" part? My .aspx file isn't on disk, that's why i want to use the handler in the first place.

  Hi, I'm trying to create a bunch of MS visual studio unit tests for my n-tiered web app but for some reason I can't run those tests and I get the following error - "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" What I'm trying to do is testing of my data access layer where I use LINQ data context class to execute a certain function and return a result,however during the debugging process I found out that all the tests fail as soon as they get to the LINQ data context class and it has something to do with the connection string but I cant figure out what is the problem.   I am wondering if there is a way to do this using Core Animation. Specifically, I am adding a sub-layer to a layer-backed custom NSView and setting its delegate to another custom NSView. That class's drawInRect method draws a single CGPath: - (void)drawInRect:(CGRect)rect inContext:(CGContextRef)context { CGContextSaveGState(context); CGContextSetLineWidth(context, 12); CGMutablePathRef path = CGPathCreateMutable(); CGPathMoveToPoint(path, NULL, 0, 0); CGPathAddLineToPoint(path, NULL, rect.size.width, rect.size.height); CGContextBeginPath(context); CGContextAddPath(context, path); CGContextStrokePath(context); CGContextRestoreGState(context); } My desired effect would be to animate the drawing of this line. That is, I'd like for the line to actually "stretch" in an animated way. It seems like there would be a simple way to do this using Core Animation, but I haven't been able to come across any. Do you have any suggestions as to how I could accomplish this goal?

  I'm trying to write an ARM program that will convert an ieee number to a TNS format number. TNS is a format used by some super computers, and is similar to ieee but different. I'm trying to use several masks to place the three different "part" of the ieee number in separate registers so I can move them around accordingly. EDIT: What I mean, is that after the subroutine runs, registers 4, 5, and 6 all remain 0. I can't figure out why the masks are not working. I think I do not fully understand how the number is being stored in the register or using the masks wrong. Any help appreciated. If you need more info just ask. • Datastore performance, my code or the datastore latency

  I had for the last month a bit of a problem with a quite basic datastore query. It involves 2 db.Models with one referring to the other with a db.ReferenceProperty. The problem is that according to the admin logs the request takes about 2-4 seconds to complete. I strip it down to a bare form and a list to display the results. The put works fine, but the get accumulates (in my opinion) way to much cpu time. #The get look like this: outputData['items'] = {} labelsData = Label.all() for label in labelsData: labelItem = label.item.name if labelItem not in outputData['items']: outputData['items'][labelItem] = { 'item' : labelItem, 'labels' : [] } outputData['items'][labelItem]['labels'].append(label.text) path = os.path.join(os.path.dirname(__file__), 'index.html') self.response.out.write(template.render(path, outputData)) #And the models: class Item(db.Model): name = db.StringProperty() class Label(db.Model): text = db.StringProperty() lang = db.StringProperty() item = db.ReferenceProperty(Item) I've tried to make it a number of different way ie. instead of ReferenceProperty storing all Label keys in the Item Model as a db.ListProperty. My test data is just 10 rows in Item and 40 in Label. So my questions: Is it a fools errand to try to optimize this since the high cpu usage is due to the problems with the datastore or have I just screwed up somewhere in the code? ..fredrik

  I'm having trouble using os.utime to correctly set the modification time on the mac (Mac OS X 10.6.2, running Python 2.6.1 from /usr/bin/python). It's not consistent with the touch utility, and it's not consistent with the properties displayed in the Finder's "get info" window. Consider the following command sequence. The 'created' and 'modified' times in the plain text refer to the "get info" window attributes. Then I run touch -m -t 200011221234 tempfile and both 'created' and 'modified' times are changed. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? How do I change the modification and creation times consistently on the mac? (Yes, I am aware that on Unixy systems there is no "creation time.")
