• The Customer Experience Revolution is Now

  To conclude this week’s focus on customer experience, I’ll end by recapping how my week began in New York City at The Experience Revolution. We all know that customers increasingly call the shots, and that winning or losing depends on how well we manage to meet their expectations. Today’s customers have a multitude of choices and are quick to jump ship following a poor experience. As a result, delivering an experience that is relevant, interactive, engaging, and consistent across channels and fostering rewarding relationships are increasingly important to business success.  It is only through exceptional customer experiences that companies can expect to acquire new customers and maintain their loyalty.  Over 400 of us gathered at Gotham Hall on Monday night to hear Oracle President Mark Hurd introduce Oracle Customer Experience, a cross-stack suite of customer experience products that include Oracle RightNow CX Cloud Service, Oracle Endeca, Oracle ATG Web Commerce, Oracle WebCenter,Oracle Siebel CRM, Oracle Fusion CRM, Oracle Social Network, and Oracle Knowledge Management. I'd encourage you check out this video to hear Mark explain why having a good product isn't good enough in the wake of the customer experience revolution. • Internal Data Masking

  By default, the data in the product is unmasked for authorized users. If particular data within the object is considered a candidate for data masking then the masking capabilities with the product can be used to mask the data in an appropriate fashion. The inbuilt Data Masking capabilities of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework uses a number of configuration elements: An algorithm, of type F1-MASK, is specified to configure the elements of the data masking including the masking character, number of suffix characters left unmasked, characters to ignore in the string, the application service, security type and authorization levels applicable to the mask. A Data Masking Feature Configuration is created to define where the algorithm applies. The specification of the feature allows you to define the fields to encrypt using the configured algorithm. The algorithm can be attached to a schema field, table field, characteristic, search field and even a child record (such as an identifier). The appropriate user groups are then connected to the application services with the appropriate service types and level to indicate whether the masking applies to the user group or not. For example, say there is a field called CCNBR in the product which holds the credit card details. I would create an algorithm, say CCformatCC, to mask the credit card number with the last few digits as unmasked (as the standard in most systems dictate). I would specify on the Field Mask the following: field="CCNBR", alg="CMformatCC" On the algorithm CMfomatCC, I would specify the mask, application service, security type and the authorization level which users would see the credit card unmasked. To finish the configuration off and to implemention I would connect the appropriate user groups to the application service I specified with the security type and appropriate authorization level for that group. Whenever a user accesses the CCNBR field on any of the maintenance screens, searches and other screens that use the CCNBR meta data definition would then be masked according to the user group that the user was a member of. Refer to the documentation supplied with F1-MASK algorithm type entry for more examples of what is possible.

• Security Alert For CVE-2010-4476 Released

  Hello, this is Eric Maurice again. Oracle just released a Security Alert with a fix for the vulnerability CVE-2010-4476, which affects Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. This vulnerability is present in Java running on servers as well as standalone Java desktop applications. Its successful exploitation by a malicious attacker can result in a complete denial of service for the affected servers. While only recently publicly disclosed, a number of Internet sites have since then reproduced details about this vulnerability, including exploit codes, which may result in allowing a malicious attacker to create a denial of service condition against the targeted system. Oracle therefore strongly recommends that affected organizations apply this fix as soon as possible. Please note that a fix for this vulnerability will also be included in the upcoming Java Critical Patch Update (Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011), which will be released on February 15th 2011. Note that the impact of this vulnerability on desktops is minimal: the affected applications or applets running in Internet browsers for example, might stop responding and may need to be restarted; however the desktop itself will not be compromised (i.e. no compromise at the desktop OS level). Oracle therefore recommends that consumers use the Java auto-update mechanism to get this fix. This will prompt them to install the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment 6 update 24 or higher (JRE), which includes the fix for this vulnerability. JRE 6 update 24 will also be distributed with the Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update - February 2011. • Efficient use of Bundling

  One of the discussions I am having with customers and consulting people is about the use of Bundling and its appropriate use. We introduced Bundling post release in the V2.2 code line to allow partners and consultants to build solutions using the Configuration Tools objects such as UI Maps, Service Scripts, Business Objects, Business Services etc and then export and migrate them as solutions. Whilst that was the original intent I have found a few teams using the facility for other data and then complaining about the efficiency or relevance of the tool. Here are a number of guidelines to help optimize the use of Bundling for your implementation: Not all objects can be bundled. Only specific objects in the product can be bundled. These are targetted at Configuration Tools objects and a select group of other objects that are required for these objects. Maintenance Objects with the option "Eligble for Bundling" set to Y (and also contains a Bundling Add BO). Add objects to the Bundle as you complete them - Bundling can have issues with sequencing objects. The best way of combating this is to add objects to the bundle as you complete them. This will help with making sure you sequence the loading of the objects as you are building them in the correct order. Remember Bundling was designed for developers and partners to deliver solutions. If you leave adding objects to a Bundle using the Bundle Export zones then you will have less control of what sequence they are applied and this can cause timing issues. Bundling takes the latest revision  - If you combine Bundling with Revision Control then the Bundling will take the latest release of the object at the time of the export operation. Bundling and Version Control products - If you use a version control tool to control your java code then you can also check in the Bundle to associate a release between code and a bundle. Bundling is quite a powerful feature of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework that allows sales, partners, consultants and customers to package and import their Configuration Tools based solutions.
