  • BIOS upgrade lowers CPU temperature

    Setup I've got a system with an Asus P8Z68-V PRO motherboard and an Intel Core i7-2600K CPU running at stock speed (no overlocking) which I cool with a Noctua NH-U12P. On the heatsink I've got the two included fans connected via the included Low-Noise Adapters (L.N.A.) 1100 RPM, 16.9 dB(A). In the BIOS settings I've set the CPU and chassis fan profile to silent. Issue Yesterday I upgraded from BIOS version 0501 to 0606. After the upgrade I checked the temperatures in the BIOS monitor and was surprised to see that the CPU temperature was slightly ~30°C. Before the upgrade the CPU temperature was ~50°C with the same BIOS settings (see the following heading for details on temperatures). How can this be? It seems a bit odd that a BIOS upgrade can lower the CPU temperature by 20°C and it also seems odd that the CPU temperature is lower than the chassis temperature. Temperatures When I've checked temperatures the room temperature has been ~23°C. I haven't changed the placement of the computer nor the hardware or cooling setup between BIOS versions. BIOS version 0501 BIOS monitor: CPU: ~50°C Chassis: ~33°C I haven't got any temperature measures from lm-sensors or the like for version 0501 because I only discovered the issue after upgrading to version 0606 and the BIOS updater utility won't let me downgrade to version 0501 (it says "outdated image" when I try to load version 0501). BIOS version 0606 BIOS monitor: CPU: ~30°C Chassis: ~33°C lm-sensors in Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop 64-bit (sudo sensors after an uptime of 4 h 52 min and a load average of 0.22, 0.18, 0.15): coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 0: +32.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +98.0°C) coretemp-isa-0001 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 1: +35.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +98.0°C) coretemp-isa-0002 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 2: +29.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +98.0°C) coretemp-isa-0003 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 3: +36.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +98.0°C) The BIOS monitor temperatures was checked directly after the lm-sensors temperatures was checked.     I'm on my MacBook Pro and I want to use my Bootcamp partition to work on one screen. I've installed Parallels 9 and after I installed it and configured it to look at my Windows partition through the Bootcamp Wizard it gives me an "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" error when I try and boot. I figured it must be an issue with parallels so I've rebooted and now I'm getting it when I try to boot into Windows 8.1. Any ideas? Thanks

Then using Windows 7's disk management console, I resized my Windows 7partition and created a 3rd NTFS partition for data, intending for both Windows 7 and Snow Leopard to read/write this partition. I installed MacFuse and NTFS-3G in Snow Leopard, but Snow Leopard still shows I have a single Windows 7 partition. How can I get Snow Leopard to recognize my third partition?

The problem I am having sounds almost exactly like the one described in this Microsoft KB article, except that the error I am getting is intermittent: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814398 The SQL Server is running under the Local System account (which I don't have authority to change), and the Access 97 .mdb file that the linked server points to is on a Win XP Pro machine on the same LAN as the SQL Server machine, inside of a shared folder with permissions set to "Everyone" and "Full Control". Now, if the linked server connection never worked, it would make more sense that the problem is merely a permissions issue with the Local System account as the KB article above suggests, but the maddening thing is that sometimes the connection works just fine. When it fails, the error message is always the same: Error 7399: OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error. [OLE/DB provider returned message: Unspecified error] OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' IDBInitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005: ]. Also, not only does the linked server setup occasionally work just fine on this one particular SQL Server, what is supposed to be exactly the same setup on 25 other servers works just fine EVERY TIME! I get no mouse or keyboard input, can't CTRL+ALT+DEL, no "not responding" indication, just a static image on my display. My drivers are all up to date as far as I'm aware (I just installed this copy of Windows last week). I first noticed this when trying to install Xmarks. I went to the Xmarks site and tried to install and it would freeze. I managed to get it installed (Safe mode and the Mozilla addon site worked), but when I go to configure it (log in, etc), the computer freezes. I don't think it's a matter of usage time or memory issues, because while testing, I browsed wallpaper galleries for about 30 minutes, sometimes as many as 12-15 tabs open at a time, without issue. Sometimes I won't even try to install Xmarks at it will hang. I can install (some) other extensions, the only one I've tried is download status bar (which works). What I've done to try to fix: Restarted (duh) Windows safe mode Completely remove Firefox and install it to a new directory, according to Mozilla's KB (I haven't tried the profile manager, though I assume this does the same thing, except perhaps more thoroughly) Some BIOS changes, including Power options, disabling oveclocking (it was a modest overclock on the CPU, which has run Win7 beta and RC for almost a year now) Memtest Used another Windows user profile, same tragic results I'm STUCK now, with no idea what to do. I'm using Chrome as my main browser at the moment, but that's not something I want to be stuck with. I like Firefox and want to use it. I'm going to try creating a new profile first. One thing I did notice: I started leaving task manager and performance monitor open when anticipating (but dreading) a freeze. firefox.exe had low CPU and low memory, but it looked like overall disk usage was seeing some spikes on the small graph Performance Monitor gives you. I saw on one blog post a fellow using XP moved his Local Settings directory from a separate drive to his main drive, and that solved it, but I don't think my AppData directory is on my D: drive, and that's on the same physical device anyways. Still, something that might be worth trying. I'd extremely appreciate any help. Thanks very much. I really don't want to reinstall Windows from scratch again :( Anthony Aziz

  • Excel 2007 VBA macros don't work in Parallels

    I've got a complex Excel spreadsheet I need to use at work. My colleagues use the spreadsheet on Windows PC's, with no special configuration required. I want to run it on a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. The spreadsheet contains VBA macros which connect to external Oracle db's over the Internet. If I understand correctly, Excel on the Mac doesn't run VBA macros, so I have to use Parallels. I installed Parallels on the Mac and it's running correctly, as far as I can tell. I installed Excel 2007 under Parallels. I can open the Excel spreadsheet in Parallels and click buttons in the spreadsheet to run macros, but the macros fail with compiler errors. I don't have the password to the source code for the VBA macros, and if possible, I don't want to dig in to the code at that level. I know that there are quite a few things that could go wrong, and examining the VBA code might help, but I'm hoping to solve the problem without going down that road. The spreadsheet runs without any special configuration on Windows, so I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of any limitations of Excel VBA macros under Parallels, or anything else I could do to get this spreadsheet working.     Does anyone know how to disable the unknown publisher security warning when running an application in Windows Xp Home? It's pretty annoying to have to click run everytime... I have tried: Run gpedit.msc, and go to Local Computer Policy-User Configuration-Administrative Templates-Windows Components-Attachment Manager and enable "Default risk level for file attachments", and then enable "Inclusion list for low risk file types" and add to this list the file extensions that you want to open without triggering this crap. But this file 'gpedit.msc' doest not exist on my computer, i checked system32 folder also =/ maybe its for xp pro

Any ideas on where to troubleshoot?   • MacBook hangs when restarting to Vista through BootCamp

    I have Vista Pro installed on my Macbook and while it mostly works well, sometimes when I select Windows from the boot screen after turning the thing on, the screen just goes black and it all stops. If I hold the power button until it powers down and repeat, it works. It's not getting as far as Windows at all, I think, because if Windows was previously shut down to Hibernate, it still restores fine... and I'm pretty sure if Windows' startup had hung and been force-rebooted my session would be borked?
