    I have a programming project due today and I am having a simple error. The project is to create a skeleton of a basic menu. The new command just counts from 1 to an integer entered by the user.   • Strange mysql problem moving website from Ubuntu server to Mac server

    I'm moving a website (php/mysql) from an Ubuntu server to a OSX 10.6 server. I've set up apache to run php scripts and setup the newest version of mysql on the mac. I just copied all of the php files and dumped/imported all of the mysql databases (including the mysql users database). When I visit the page being served on the Mac the page is able to connect to the database, but not query. Specifically this function mysql_error() is returning this error message NO SUCH FILE OR DIRECTORY The reason it's strange is that I'm able to change the php connection strings for mysql on the Ubuntu server so that it points to the Mac server and the page works correctly (so it seems mysql is correctly set up on the mac and definitely contains all of the users and tables it should). Thinking it was something to do with file permissions on the mac, I've changed all of the files 755 and it hasn't helped. Any ideas? Thanks!!   • I have to shard a mysql database. I want to start with 12 shards on 2 machines. What is the best w

    All tables are InnoDb. I would rather not use mysqldump, because the shard sizes will be about 200 GB (about 700 million rows), and that will take too long. I was hoping to just stop mysql for an hour, copy the data files to a new machine, and start back up. But you can't do this with InnoDb, as some data is in the shared tablespace. Even if I have the innodb_file_per_table option set. This is not a website, but a custom application, used by tens of thousands right now, so uptime and performance are important. I suppose I could add logic into my server application to allow for gradual rebalancing / moving of a shard. Does anyone have a better idea?

  • Word 2007 won't run, tries to reinstall, fails with error 1402.

    Okay, this problem has been plaguing this computer for a while now. We tried googling, and none of the answers found helped to solve the problem. So, I am now posting the answer here for posterity. Office 2007 Home/Student edition was installed on the computer, running Vista (32-bit). One day, Word just up and stopped working. All the other programs continued to operate as expected. But every time you would click the icon for Word, it would pop up an install dialog, with a message reading "Preparing to install...". After a few minutes of the little progress bar going and going, it errors out, and gives error 1402, something to the effect of unable to access registry key HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\.wll\.... Searching around, every answer i found had to do with reassigning the permissions on this key, giving full rights to SYSTEM or to Everyone, and propagating the changes down to all sub-keys. When ever this was attempted though, it would tell us that we were unable to access the key due to permissions, even though we had run regedit as Administrator and are logged on with an administrative account. We also tried uninstalling Office and reinstalling it, as well as doing a repair install. Both these attempts also threw the same 1402 error. Also of note was that the executable for Word (winword.exe) was MIA and no longer to be found in the Office install directory.

    Regular readers of my blog will be aware of my friend who called me few days ago with very a funny SQL Problem SQL SERVER – SSMS Query Command(s) completed successfully without ANY Results. This time, it did not take long before he called me up with another interesting problem, although the issue he was facing this time was not that interesting and also very specific to him, however, he insisted me to share with all of you. Let us understand his situation at first. My friend is preparing for DBA exam Exam 70-450: PRO: Designing, Optimizing and Maintaining a Database Server Infrastructure using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and for the same, he was trying to set up replication on his local laptop. He had installed two different instances of SQL Server on his computer and every time when he started the mirroring, it failed with common error message. The server network address “TCP://SQLServer:5023? cannot be reached or does not exist. Check the network address name and that the ports for the local and remote endpoints are operational. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1418) Well, before he contacted me, he searched online and checked my article written on the error in mirroring. However, he tried all the four suggestions, but it did not solve his problem. He called me at a reasonable time of late evening (unlike last time, which was midnight!). I even tried all the seven different suggestions myself, as previously proposed in my article; however, none of them worked. While looking at closely at services, I noticed something very simple. He was running all the instances on ‘Network Services’. In fact, his computer was a stand-alone computer. There was no network at all. Also, there was no domain or any other advance network concepts implemented. I just changed services from ‘Network Services’ to ‘Local System’ as his SQL Server was running on his local system and there were no network services. This prompted to restart the services. As this was not the production server and his development machine, we restarted the services on the laptop (do not restart services on production server without proper planning). After changing the ‘services log on’ account to localsystem, when he attempted to reconfigure the mirroring it worked right away. As usually in production server, proper domains are configured and advance network concepts are implemented I had never faced this type of problem earlier. My friend insisted to post this solution to his situation, wherein there was no domain configured and setting up mirroring was throwing an error. According to him, this is bound to help people, like him, who are preparing for certification using single system. Is this kind of error rate typical for downloads? My personal experience downloading other's documents suggests no; our internal attempts show this to be very reliable, but we're operating on our internal network for such experiments so we're missing the complexity of the intervening internet.

I figured it might be someplace in my code, so I modified .htaccess to spit out a 502 error to prevent it from loading anything. The error still shows up, just less frequently.     I just started a new Android project, "WeekendStudy" to continue learning Android development and I got stumped compiling the default 'hello weekendstudy' compile / run. I think that I missed a step in configuration and setup, but I am at a loss to find out where. I have an AVD configured, set and launched.     Our company had resently upgraded to a domain functionality from workgroup and now we get this error message shown below on the clients laptops.   • Easy Server Monitoring/Logging point in time solution?

    I managed my company's servers and I need to know if load spiked at 3am on the web or mysql server, what processes were active in apache or what queries were going on in mysql at that point in time and maybe any other information that will help me. I know all of that is in log files all over and its literally a PITA to look it all up and correlate data. isnt there 1 solution thats been invented. i know we have pingdom to monitor uptime and responsiveness. like if it has taken 30 seconds to load a page or an error was given by apache or php or mysql to the browser, i want to know that and what mysql processes were running at the time, the apache full status and maybe top output also. stuff like that also would be looking for a SAAS like cloudkick, something i dont have to spend an entire month of work hours setting up when we can pay for something cheaper.
