• Mounting share over VPN

  I have a CentOS 5 web server which currently mounts a NFS export on my Mac OS X 10.7 laptop. It works great, except over VPN I can't get it to mount at all. I tried SMBUp but haven't been able to get it working even locally. It doesn't look like there's an easy way to install netatalk for CentOS 5. Even still, I'm not sure if that's the best way to do it. I tried using a GUI SSH client that can "mount a FTP disk" and it would work, except the files require root access and there's no external root access and the client can't elevate permissions. The basic thing I need to do is have the server be able to read the files off of my laptop, connected via VPN. The files are frequently updated (every 5-20 seconds) so I don't want to manually do that via SSH. Which protocol can work with both platforms and easily handle the latency introduced by VPN (and potentially mobile broadband)? Thanks

• Looking for a free SMTP server program

  Hello all, I am looking for a free SMTP server. I am currently using Free SMTP Server http://www.softstack.com/freesmtp.html This software works great other than the fact that it can only send 10 messages a day. This is a bit of a problem seeing that the software I am writing needs to send a message every half hour. Anyone knows of a good piece of software that does the same thing, but does not limit the amount of messages that can be sent in a day? I am using Windows XP, so software must be Windows friendly

• Wireless slow, but very odd

  I have a HP Pavilion dv6 laptop, internet through the wireless timeouts. Even though it connects fine to the AP/router. The computer had a virus (searchnu?) and I backed up the usual and restored the laptop to factory image. Problem is after the restore the internet through the wireless the same still... and connected via wired and everything worked fine. I was able to update the whole system. Internet worked perfect, speed great. But the wireless still was pitiful. Ping tests with wireless are interesting: Google= 18ms Gmail= 18ms Yahoo= 1023ms 8.8.8.8=30ms Microsoft= Request Timed Out Bing= Request Timed Out msn= Request Timed Out even though I get 18ms with google, the pages take a long time to load. Is this a root kit? is it the wireless card in the laptop?

• Screen rotation hot key (CTRL+ALT+UP) not responding, what's going on?

  The other day my son (11 months) discovered a new hot key combination on my laptop. As I'm sure many of you are aware (I wasn't until the other day), on machines with Intel Graphics, pressing CTRL+ALT+{any arrow key} rotates the screen. After I recovered from my shock, and did a little sideways Googling to figure out how to fix it, I decided this might actually be useful. I read a lot of online documentation, and it fits better on the screen when it's rotated. Since it's a laptop, I hold the machine like a book and read it. It worked great all afternoon yesterday. But today at work I tried to show a friend this new trick, using the same laptop, and found that the CTRL+ALT+UP no longer works. I can rotate it to any orientation but the normal one. I'm guessing something else is intercepting this hot key, but what could be doing this?

• Client/Server game even in solo: any big problem?

  I'm making a game which have strong basic design based on multiplayer but also should provide a really interesting and self-sufficient solo game. A bit like a real-time strategy game. The events and actions taken shouldn't be as massive and immediate as in a FPS, so you can also think the networking like for an RTS. It's a PC game, targetting Windows, MacOSX and Linux (Ubuntu & Fedora). It's programmed in C++, using a variety of open source libraries, so I have great (potential) control over the performances. So far I always considered that just making the game work with two applications, client & server, even in solo mode was ok. However, as I'm in the process of starting the network code I'm having doubts about if it's a good idea. I'm not a specialist so I might be missing something in my analysis. I see these pros and cons: Pros: The game works only one way so if I fix a bug it should apply on all game modes, whatever the distance with the server is; Basic networking issues would be detected early, including behaviour with the protection softwares (firewall) installed (i am not specialist so this might be wrong); Cons: I suppose that even if it should be really fast enough, networking client and server on the same computer would still be slower than no networking and message passing in (one) process memory. Maybe debugging would be more difficult? I don't have experience in this case but so far I assume that debugging with Visual Studio allows me to debug multiple process so it shouldn't be really different. Also, remote debugging. My question is: is there a big disadvantage that I missed? Or maybe there are advantages that I missed and that should encourage me to just continue with only client-server game sessions?

• Freelance for moderately complex admin support

  Mailing lists and question/answers works great for problems that are independently encountered by several people. But sometimes we (as in experienced amateurs) run into problems that aren't so common, nobody has blogged about it and experts advice not readily available. For IT-admin related stuff can someone please recommend how can amateurs pay experts and get hands on advice. The kinds of problems I am talking about are like setting up nxserver or openvpn on freeBSD box. The install/config is not so simple, the documentation not easy for non-it professionals. • Reference manager for Ubuntu

  I'm in dire need of a reference/citation manager in Ubuntu. The features I need the most are: 1) Metadata extraction/editing of pdf 2) Fetch metadata from online databases such as Google Scholar 3) Attach pdf or other file to reference 4) Tag references and recall those with a given tag or set of tags 5) Provide APA style citation for references (in integration with OOffice and/or Latex) Optional: Would be great if it can annotate/highlight pdfs. Mendeley probably does all of these, but it's behavior has driven me insane, especially when the number of references it's trying to handle is large. It constantly tries to sync with the web and creates duplicate references. I've tried JabRef, and while it looks like a decent piece of freeware, it doesn't do some of the above. I found others like Bibus, Referencer, etc. to be lacking or buggy or inactive development. Is there another option, or should I give up the search.

• What is the average page size for single page application (SPA)? [on hold]

  I'm developing a single page application with a lot of css & javascript. For now the page is 1.3Mo composed by 5 section. Here are the rounded stats : Document : 10kb Style : 60kb Images : 450 kb (already compressed, include a big gallery thumbnails) Javascript : 700kb - 600kb of "framework" (jquery, jquery-ui, boostrap, modernizer, waypoint, ...) and 100kb of custom js. Fonts : 125kb And the site is not finished yet. (Will include gmap api, and some others...) My questions are : Do you have any statistics about the average weight of an SPA? As this is the whole website, do you think it's acceptable? Is lazy load (for images) a solution? What will be impact for SEO ? Is the "200kb rule" of google still relevant? Do you know great tools to detect which javascript code is not used during the the exection of a page and then the availability to optimize these 700kb of framework js stuffs? Can a caching strategy be an answer?

• Finite Numbers and ExplorerCanvas

  I was working on my online mathematical graphing application, CloudGraph, and trying to make it work in IE. The app uses the HTML5 canvas element to draw graphs. Since IE doesn't support canvas yet I use ExplorerCanvas to provide that support for IE. However, it seems that when using excanvas, if you try to moveTo or drawTo a point that is not finite it loses it's mind and stops drawing anything else after that. I had no such problems in Firefox or Chrome so it took me awhile to figure out what was going on. Next I discovered that I needed a way to check if a variable was NaN or Inifinity or any other non-finite value so I could avoid calling moveTo() in that case. I started writing a long if statement, then I thought there has to be a better way. Sure enough there was. There just happens to be an isFinite() function built into Javascript just for this purpose. Who knew! It works great. Another difference I discovered with excanvas is that you must specify a starting point using a moveTo() when beginning a drawing path. Again, Chrome and Firefox are a lot more forgiving in this area so it took me a while to figure out why my lines weren't drawing. But, all is happy now and I'm a little wiser to the ways of the canvas.

  I want to grant users access to the nagios 3 core frontend by using an active directory group ("NagiosWebfrontend" in the code below). I got the hint, that I am missing a contact in nagios configuration which is equal to my login, but creating one with the same name as the domain user had no effect on this issue. However, it would be great to find a solution without manually editing nagios.conf for every new user, so the admins could grant access to nagios by just putting the user to "NagiosWebfrontend" group. What would be the best way to solve it?

• How can I migrate mails from Yahoo! Mail to Google Apps?

  We'd like to move from using Yahoo! Mail to our Google Apps account. It'd be great to be able to migrate all the mails across from the old accounts to the new. If we were using Gmail accounts this would be easy as the migration is offered by Google, for some reason they don't offer this to those using custom domains. As far as I know Yahoo! don't offer POP or IMAP access to non-paying customers and I'd rather not pay $20 per account that I want to migrate. Anyone know of any easy and cheap solutions?

• Can I backup my IMAP Gmail account locally using only Alpine?

  I recently discovered cli email clients and have fallen in love with their speed and simplicity. After playing around with mutt and alpine I decided I favor alpine. I am a Gmail IMAP user and have many years of emails that I'd like to store locally. Is there a more or less convenient way to retain IMAP functionality and backup only the emails that haven't been backed up already on a weekly basis? I have alpine setup with my Gmail with IMAP and it's working great. I'm just wondering if there is a way to make an offline backup or "archive" locally on my computer while retaining the multi device access that IMAP offers. I apologize if this has been asked before, I did search for it and did not find my answer. Thank you for reading.

• Project Showcase: SaaS Web Apps Hits a Home Run with New SCMS Database

Who: SaaS Web Apps – they use Software as a Service to create web applications that look and feel like desktop applications. What: SaaS Web Apps needed to build a Sports Contract Management System (SCMS) for one of its customers, Premier Stinson Sports. Why: The SCMS database is used for collecting, analyzing and recording college coach and athletic directors’ employment and contract data. The Challenge: Premier Stinson Sports works with a number of partners, each with its own needs and unique requirements. For example, USA Today uses the system to provide cutting edge news analysis while The National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School uses it to for the latest sports contract data and student analysis. In addition, the system needed to be secure due to the sensitivity of the data; it was essential that the user security and permissions be easily configurable. As always, performance was a key factor, especially with the intense reporting and analytical capabilities for this project. Because of this, most of the processing had to be done on a dedicated server but the project called for the richness and responsiveness of a desktop application. The Solution: To execute the project, SaaS Web Apps used APS.Net-based Visual WebGui from Gizmox, combined with SQL Server 2008 and SQL Reporting Services. This combination resulted in a quick deployment for SaaS Web Apps’ customers. The Result: The completed project gave each partner the scalability and availability of a web application with the performance and security of a desktop application. As an example, USA Today pulls data from this database to give readers the latest sports stats – Salary analysis of 2010 Football Bowl Subdivision Coaches. • Timeout ssh sessions after inactivity?

  PCI requirement 8.5.15 states: "If a session has been idle for more than 15 minutes, require the user to re-enter the password to re-activate the terminal." The first, and most obvious, way to deal with ssh sessions that are idling at the bash prompt is by enforcing a read-only, global $TMOUT of 900. Unfortunately, that only covers sessions sitting at the bash prompt. The spirit of the PCI spec would also require killing sessions running top/vim/etc. I've considered writing a */1 cron job that parses the output of "/usr/bin/w" and kills the associated shell, but that seems like a blunt instrument. Any ideas for something that would actually do what the spec requires and just lock the terminal? I've looked at away and vlock; they both seem great for voluntarily locking your terminal, but I need a cron/daemon task that will enforce locking.

• External monitor on old Dell 700m?

  Okay, linux noob. I installed 10.04 on an old Dell 700m in hopes of using it as a media center device. That seems to work great, except now it won't output to the external monitor. VGA cable works fine, TV recognizes other computers fine, it's the laptop that won't output. Turns out that the 700m, unlike every other computer out there, doesn't have a Fn hotkey to switch monitors. The only way to do it in Windows was to go through the Control Panel. In Ubuntu, though, the Monitor setup won't detect or recognize any monitors. The laptop display works fine, but I can't adjust or add anything. I did a little research and found suggestions for older Ubuntu builds involving the xorg.conf. I tried one out, in spite of my unfamiliarity, and it's screwed the whole display big time. I can fix that with a clean reinstall, that's no problem, but I'm cautious about editing xorg again. Any suggestions? Thank you!

• How to add recently set cookies to nginx's access log

  I'd like to include cookie data in an nginx access log like so: (simplified example) log_format foo '$remote_addr "$request" $cookie_bar'; access_log /var/log/nginx/access.log foo; This works great on requests that already have a cookie "bar", but for the first request to my server nginx will report "-" as the value of "bar". It seems like my problem is that nginx is looking at the request headers for the cookie value. Is there a way check for a Set-Cookie in the response and use that as a fallback?

• Unix: sleep until the specified time

  Is there a (semi-)standard Unix command that would sleep until the time specified on its command line? In other words, I am looking for something similar to sleep that would take wakeup time rather than duration. For example: sleeptill 05:00:00 I can code something up but would rather not re-invent the wheel if there's already something out there. Bonus question: it would be great if it could take the timezone (as in sleeptill 05:00:00 America/New_York). edit Due to the nature of what I am doing, I am looking for a "sleep until T" rather than "run command at T" solution. edit For the avoidance of doubt, if I run the command at 18:00 and tell it to wake up at 17:00, I expect it to sleep for 23 hours (or, in some corner cases having to do with daylight savings time, for 22 or 24 hours.)

• When XP is asleep for a long time LAN reports code 43, gives up the ghost.

  This one's got me stumped. Whenever the system is asleep for a long time, e.g overnight, the LAN driver reports error code 43 ("a problem") and turns itself off. This has being going on for months, but I never caught the problem until now. The owner merely shuttles back to a restore point I set her when the machine worked. Previously (without knowing exactly what was happening) I have tried everything to resolve this. Manually resetting the TCP/IP, fiddling with the driver Wake From LAN settings, DIFFERENT drivers, etc. etc. The solution is easy, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. Understandably, though, the user is uncomfortable with this operation and the problem persists. What's causing it and how to stop it recurring? Any ideas? Thanks in advance to this great community. • Blog Rebranding

  I have been spending more and more time on learning as much as I can on Agile Development and also have been fairly immersed in rolling out TFS 2010 in our environment.  I feel like it is time to talk about some of my experiences.  With that, I am rebranding my blog to focus on these topics.  I am going to start with a bunch of blogs on the process I have gone through getting TFS 2010 configured for our development teams. Last week, Brian Harry was in our office and gave a great talk on the improved tools in TFS 2010 and how Microsoft uses the tools internally.  I followed that up with a high-level overview of the improved out of the box process templates and the process to customize them.  I am definitely very excited about the new features in 2010 and hopefully will keep up my motivation to blog about it.  I am writing my first post right now about the process I went through to build a task progress report based on the user story progress report in the MSF for Agile Development template.  Stay tunedDid you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How do I use a URL path instead of a file path in an Open File dialog in Mac OSX or ChromiumOS?

  In Windows 7 (and perhaps earlier), the default "Open File" dialog box allows you to type a full URL into the "File name" section as if it were a file path, e.g. "http://www.example.com/pic.gif" instead of "C:/windows/pictures/pic.gif". When uploading a file to a website on the client side - say, an image - this allows the client to upload a picture located on a server accessible via the URL instead of downloading the image, saving it locally, then referencing the local image in the "Open File" dialog. It's a great option for Windows users. I have three separate questions: What is this procedure formally called? How do I describe this succinctly so that my searches for more information are fruitful? Can something similar be done in Mac OSX, Chromium OS, or a Linux environment? If so, how? Thanks!

• Poll on Entity Framework 4 &ndash; one year on

  12 months back (today is March 15th 2010) on the 16th of  March 2009 I created a poll on Entity Framework v1 – the marmite of ORMs? A quick poll…. Entity Framework v1 was getting a mixed reception at the time – I met developers who genuinely hated it and I met developers who were loving the productivity improvements they were seeing. There were definitely issues with v1, too many IMHO. Which is why the product team placed a huge effort on listening to the community to drive the feature set for v2 (which ultimately was named Entity Framework 4 as it ships with .NET 4). I think overall the team have done a great job. It isn’t perfect in .NET 4 (which is why the team are busy on post .NET 4 improvements) but I would happily use it and recommend it for a wide variety of projects – much wider than I would have with v1. I am speaking on EF 4 at www.devweek.com this Wednesday and I thought it would be fun to put a new version of the poll out and see how v4 is being received. Obviously the big difference is we have not yet shipped EF4 vs when I did the original poll on EF1. • How to force ADF to speak your language (or any common language)

  When I started working for Oracle, one of the first tasks I was given was to contribute some content to a great ADF course Frank and Chris are building. Among other things, they asked me to work on a module about Internationalization. While doing research work, I unearthed a little gem I had overlooked all those years. JDeveloper, as you may know, speaks your language - as long as your language is English, that is. Oracle ADF, on the other hand, is a citizen of the world. It is available in more than 25 different languages. But while this is a wonderful feature for end users, it is rather cumbersome for developers. Why is that? Have you ever tried to search the OTN forums for a solution with a non-English error message as your query? I have, once. But how can you force ADF to use English for its logging operations? Playing with your system settings will not help, unfortunately. By default, ADF will output its error messages in the selected locale for the operating system account the application server runs on. The only way to change this behavior is to pass initialization parameters to the JVM used by the application server. It is even possible to specify the language and country/region separately. In the example below, we choose English and the United States respectively. -Duser.language=en -Duser.country=US In the case of WebLogic Server, it is possible to add such parameters in setDomainEnv.sh (or .cmd) to apply the settings to all the managed servers present on a node. • Web dev/programmer with 4.5 yrs experience. Better for career: self-study or master's degree? [closed]

  I'm a 28 year-old web developer/programmer with 4.5 years of experience, and I'm looking to jump-start my career. I'm trying to decide between self-study and a 1-year master's program in CS at a top school. I'm currently making 65K in a high cost-of-living area that is NOT a hot spot for technology firms. I code almost exclusively in Ruby/Rails, PHP/CodeIgniter, SQL, and JavaScript. I've slowly gained proficiency with Git. Roughly half the time I am architecting/coding, and half the time I am pounding out HTML/CSS for static brochureware sites. I'd like to make more more money while doing more challenging/interesting work, but I don't know where to start. I have an excellent academic record (math major with many CS credits, 3.9+ GPA), GRE scores, and recommendations, so I am confident that I could be admitted to a great CS master's program. On the other hand, there is the tuition and opportunity cost to consider. I feel like there are a number of practical languages/tools/skills worth knowing that I could teach myself - shell scripting, .NET, Python, Node.js, MongoDB, natural language processing techniques, etc. That said, it's one thing to read about a subject and another thing to have experience with it, which structured coursework provides. So, on to the concrete questions: What programming skills/knowledge should I develop to increase my earning potential and make me competitive for more interesting jobs? Will a master's degree in CS from a top school help me develop the above skills/knowledge, and if so, is it preferable to self-study (possibly for other reasons, e.g., the degree's value as a credential)?

• How to change the computer name on a server configured by Puppet

  I am new to Puppet and I'm trying to get Puppet to configure my EC2 instances after they're started from a Cloud Formation Template in AWS. The problem is that all the nodes that get started from the Cloud Formation Template all have the same name (the name from the AMI that the new nodes derive from). I would love to find a way to have puppet rename the nodes when the nodes start up. (although, as far as I know, a Computer Name change requires reboot, a separate issue...) If you can point me to some documentation that can help me figure this out or if you have any ideas that would be great. My ultimate goal is to have each EC2 start with a unique name so that I can use New Relic server monitoring to report the different servers.
