  firstly, apologies if this question has been asked and answered before, but I have had a look through related queries and found nothing identical to this. I have had a website for a few years, and have never had any problem uploading any files. But today, when i went to transfer a new html file onto the server...i did so, the file arrived. so i browsed to the file in my browser to check the page as i always do, and the browser wouldn't acknowledge it. after repeated attempts to transfer it, it finally seemed to go over, but only 1/4 of the file size..4KB out of 16KB...so only the top of the page would be viewable in my browser...ive tried transferring on a number of ftp clients and no love... my expertise on this is limited and i cant really think of the next step, the server isnt full, so...im just stumped. any ideas? any and all feedback is great appreciated.

• systemctl (Fedora 17) and interacting spawned processes's consoles

  Introduction I've recently upgraded to Fedora 17 and I'm getting used to the newer systemctl daemon manager versus shell init scripts. A feature I need on some of my daemons is the ability to interact with their consoles because unclean shutdowns not initiated by the process itself can cause database corruption. So, performing a systemctl stop service-name.service for example might cause irreversible data loss. These consoles read user input through stdin or similar methods, so what I've been doing on my old OS is to place those daemons foregrounded in a screen session, and I suspended that screen session with ^A ^z. It's also worth noting that I've now made systemctl do this automatically if the computer reboots, but it still doesn't solve my potential data corruption problem I'm trying to avoid. My Question Is there a way to use systemctl in order to directly interact with the console of processes it spawns? Can I hook a process through systemctl to get access to its console? • Why do some actions not work with Remote Desktop?

  I usually connect to other PCs in the same building using Remote Desktop, which works great. For some reason, some actions cannot be performed through Remote Desktop. These are, for example: Installation of certain software Accessing the directory of a DVD (that is inserted at the remote computers drive) several other tasks that just "don't react or start", unless you do the same thing without RDP All these actions work with any other remote access tool, like VNC, Teamviewer, LogMeIn, etc. My question is: What is the difference when I use a computer through RDP instead of directly? Is there a list of prohibited actions available so that one could know upfront if something can be done with RDP or not?

• 64-bit Hardware Virtualization on VirtualBox

  I am trying to set up a SQL Server practice lab using VirtualBox and a trial copy of Windows Server 2K8 R2 in ISO format. I received an error message that states my processor does not support 64-bit hardware virtualization. Although I "Enabled" Intel ardware virtualization in the BIOS that still doesn't work. According to the Intel website, the processor does support VT-x, however the accelerated tab in VirtualBox is greyed out and no references to VT-x are mentioned in the settings options available to me. Any ideas on how I can get around this? I checked around ServerFault and couldn't find anything but if I missed an applicable post a link is great too. • How to connect Ethernet via a Huawei Smart AXMT880s modem (with auto-detection)?

  It's been well over six months but I have the same router SmartAX MT880d with Ethernet, and the exact same problem : no internet, even though I can successfully reach the modem settings page by entering 192.168.1.1 in Firefox. I'm a total beginner with Ubuntu. My internet works great in Windows but does not work in Ubuntu. Sorry if I don't use the right (technical) terminology to explain my issue. English is not my mother tongue. For 2 weeks, I've been doing reading on the web and forums and the ubuntuguide.org to name a few, but to no avail. Now I see no other solution but to ask for help. My problem is that I can't find a way to put the right digits in the right place because I don't know what numbers I need to put in what files. E.g.: do I need to use DHCP? or a static IP address? No clue whatsoever. I'm concerned that I might put figures in the wrong spaces. For example, is the modem/router's IP exactly 192.168.1.1 for Huawei Smart AXMT880d modem? Is the subnet 255.255.255.0? Gateway 192.168.1.1? I'm confused as I can also see a different IP starting with 155131*** (is it an account number?) on my contract with Huawei (a Chinese ISP). Apart from calling 911, what other numbers do I need to put in and where? How do I check that all the numbers have been entered correctly in every appropriate space before trying to connect the Internet?

• Chrome opens to untitled blank page

  I am working on a computer that had a lot of malware on it. I removed most of it to my knowledge. Now when I open Google Chrome I get a blank untitled page, with the traditional sign-in URL on top. If I go to the settings, the settings tab opens up blank as well. All pages that I navigate to will come up blank as well. The browser doesn't even perform a postback, it is like it is unresponsive. I did some googling and have seen people with similar errors, but no fixes. IE 8 works great without issues. Re-installing Chrome was the first thing I did! Any suggestions?

• Noise Canceling Earphones

  I travel a lot. The hours spent droning through the sky can be made more tolerable with an MP3 player and a set of noise-cancelling headphones. Reducing the sound of the airflow and engines is a great relief. For a year or two, I used a pair of folding Sony MDR-NC5 Noise Canceling Headphones, the ear foam covers self-destructed. I replaced them with old washcloth material and was happy, but the DW thought it looked bad.  I switched to a new set of Sony MDR-NC6 Noise Canceling Headphones.  These worked equally well, although they did not fold as small as the MDR-NC5 headphones. Over four years of use, the MDR-NC6 headphones started cutting out and making popping noises.  This was not surprising considering the beating they took on travel in my backpack.  It looked like I needed another new set. The older MDR-NC5 headphones were still on the shelf with the hated washcloth covers.  A quick search online showed a vibrant business in selling replacement ear foams, often at exorbitant prices.  Nowhere did I see ear foam covers made for the oblong MDR-NC5.  I then realized that foam is stretchable and that the shape should not matter.  After another search and some consideration, I purchased 2-5/16" foam pad ear covers that were able to stretch over the MDR-NC5's strange shape.  Problem solved for less than $5.

• What strategy should be employed to access Facebook data offline?

  I'm working on a project similar to Klout which provides detail about how you influence other people and who influenced you. We'll be fetching data from few social networking sites (i.e linked in, facebook, twitter etc) to analyze how users interacts with one another. For that we need to parse the data and store it in db and have to analyze it so that strength of relation of two user can be decided. We'll be accessing data offline as well to provide them with accurate results. If we consider facebook activities, we need to have access to Facebook users' news feed, wall data which includes likes,comments,shares etc. To decide how one user influence other, we'll store all the data and analyze it. I need suggestions on what steps need to be taken for great performance. We'll be using ASP.Net(C#) Web forms, SQL Server, jQuery. Main concern is parsing of data, it's storage and retrieval with least overhead. For that I've summarized few points as below : Should we switch over to document-oriented database, like MongoDB or RavenDB for the whole app or part of it even though none of team member have experience with them? Should we use SQL Server Analysis service? Is there any other library than Json.NET for parsing data? Is it advisable to use any C# library over FQL + GET Request ? I've tried to provide as much info as possible. Please share your views for the same.

• Greater than or equal check when using Group Policy Preferences and Item Level Targeting in the Registry

  I'm implementing some screen saver configurations via Group Policy Preferences (on Win7 Enterprise x64 desktops). The desired configuration is to have users be able to adjust their screen saver and screen saver time out, but not allow them to select non screen saver or a time out higher than 45min. I've found a great write-up for configuration of the screen saver (link) but cannot find a way to configure the time out. I cannot find a way to have the item level targeting compare the reg key HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaveTimeOut value and force an over-write of the key if configured above 45min/2700seconds. Anyone else tried something like this or found a means to do this?

• Has anyone used game salad before and how does it compare with cocos2d in terms of 2d game development

  First a short intro. I am new to the game development space and want to make some 2d games for iOS. I first come across cocos2d and kobold but then wanted something more graphical for rapid prototyping. I then found Game Maker which doesn't support iOS but is fairly easy to learn and then found Game Salad which supports iOS as well as other platforms. I know this question has been ask before but I want to know in terms of the types of games I want to develop what an learning investment path would be best. The types of games genre I am interest are: Side scrollers Simple games like diamond dash or ninja fruits, shanghai, etc Old fashioned zelda or dragonquest type (nintendo fan here:-) 2d adventure RPG games (real time or turn based) Mystery turn based games like carmen sandiego, wizardry, myst etc. So now the question becomes Which game development environment should I invest my time in learning. Game Salad or cocos2d? It would seem game salad would be great for quickies being graphical but in terms of 2d platform games etc would there be speed/performance/feature penalties? Are there certain 2d games genre of the 4 above that Game salad is better at while certain type cocos2d would be better at? Anyone with experience of both can share some pointers? • Additional Hard Drives for Servers

  Hello all, I am developing a web app where I will have to save lots of files and I am just trying to work out the directory structure and where things should be saved to. I have had a look at the dedicated server I want to buy and for storage it shows this: 2x 1TB SATA in RAID1 The space is enough but I am guessing this will not be on one hard drive? I will have to save files on one hard drive and when that fills up, I have to use the other? For the Fedora distro - what is the path for the second drive? Is there a primary drive where I will be able to setup my webroot? I am sorry, this is all new to me. It would be great to links and advice on how things actually work when it comes to additional hard drives etc. Thanks all

• Backing up an rsnapshot directory to a remote device

  I have a local backup server that uses rsnapshot with hard links that contains about 10TBs of information which add about 4 to 5GBs per day. It's works great. I've been requested to set up and maintain a remote backup of the local rsnapshot directory structure. It's a nightly backup. I've tried using rsync with encryption which takes forever and eats system resources. A previous post says not to use rsync with hard links for that reason. I need a suggestion of how I can keep the local and remote copies of the rsnapshot structures in sync? Thanks

• Server stop responding, where to look to know what happened?

  I have a server that has been running for well over 5 months and suddently it stop responding. I couldn't ssh into it or anything else so I decided to reboot it and the reboot fixed it. I'm trying to figure out what happened and I'm not sure exactly where to look. I started to look in /var/log but there are tons of files in there and I'm not sure which one I should pay attention to. I'm slowly going through each one of them but if anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be great. Thanks!

• Filter tagged threads in Thunderbird

  I have a big issue with Thunderbird, I need to process a lot of emails coming from request tracking system. Since only few of those apply to me personally, I tag these threads with appropriate tags. The issue now is that I would like to filter out threads, that do apply to me and those that I haven't tagged yet. I'm unable to do this, because new emails keep arriving into the already existing threads, and of course, these new emails don't get the tags. Basically I would need some sort of filtering rule, that would apply not to a specific message, but the master message in the thread. Is there some possibility to create such filters, or is there some other facility, that would allow me to do the same? Tags are great, since they are actually saved into the messages and correctly sync across multiple machines when using IMAP.

• PS2 Eyetoy Recording Quality

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and a PS2 eyetoy "Namtai". Don't worry - this is not the sterotypical " how do I get my eyetoy working" question. My eyetoy works fine on Cheese, gucview and various other media software like VLC. However, It seems like I am capped by 25fps. If I recall, the eyetoy is much better than this (~60fps) but cannot find any way to fix this. The best program that I have have found is VLC because its advanced options allow you to change many settings but the framerate setting appears to have no effect. What software or settings can I use to take full advantage of my eyetoy? To give you the full information I wish to attach multiple eyetoys to the system and record from all of them. (Security software like motion and zoneminder, I couldn't get installed correctly on my system- so I haven't tried those yet). edit - I tried the same camera on a Windows system and the frame rate is much better in VLC compared to the Ubuntu system. Mind you with default settings in Windows VLC, the resolution isn't great. However, in Skype for example the resolution is amazing and the framerate is good. It seems there must be some settings I am missing somewhere because it doesn't appear to be a hardware problem...

• Only allow root to change filesystem

  The VPS I manage uses a simple hard link rsync archive daily backup system saved to a loop file. This is great, because each backup only takes up as much space as what has changed each day, and all user/group permissions are kept. I would like to give users direct access to their home directories in each backup, but I'm worried about intentional or accidental backup data destruction, as how it stands now users can actually change, destroy or add to backed up data they originally owned. I've been looking for a way to mount this filesystem similar to an ro mount option, but something that would still allow rw access to root, but I've had absolutely no luck. In other words, I want users to be able to view and copy their backed up data without actually being able to change it, and have that data maintain the original permissions. I've got no real preferences as far as filesystem, as long as it's a standard unix filesystem that can preserve permissions, support hard links and deny write access to users without actually stripping the w permission from everything.

• Which powerful laptop, with UK keyboard and 8gb ram

  I've been searching high and low for high spec laptops compatible with Ubuntu. The lack of coherent information on the topic is high (considering the number of people who apparently want a good laptop with an OS operating system). So I thought you may have some advice. My requirements: a) has = 8Gb ram b) is compatible with Ubuntu c) has a UK keyboard and charger d) does not cost the Earth Which would you go for? Does anyone have good experience with high-end laptops running Ubuntu? So here's some background research: Samsung Series 7 looks great, but has various problems on Ubuntu, including: poor battery life, touchpad does not work, graphics card not fully supported and sucks power when it does (see [here] and [here], for example). Other options on the [wish list] include: the sensible [Acer] (possibly n.1 choice, but not sure about graphics card compatibility or battery), a nice looking [HP Pavilion dv6-6c56ea], which also has incompatibility issues (see [here] and [here] and check ubuntuforums) And another [Acer] which may be best due to its simplicity and cheapness. Other sub-questions: didn't Dell offer Ubuntu support for decent laptops (above 6Gb ram their offerings are scarce); what about pre-installed options such as those provided by System76? If it weren't for the UK keyboard and charger, I'd probably go for this [amazing-looking] [machine]. Many thanks for any advice, P.s. • Preserve the state of the start screen

  What would I need to do in order to cause the start screen to stay the way it was the last time I saw it when I go back to it? I've noticed that every time I leave the start screen it resets back to the beginning, this means that I need to scroll back to where I was to get the same view. I don't want to change the order of the applications on the start screen to accommodate this, I would much prefer it if I could find a way to make the start screen stay the way it was so I can move on from there and also if there was a way to jump to the beginning or the end of the list that would be great. I imagine I can just use the search feature to find a specific program, but that's just an extra step, almost as bad as having to scroll.

• Script to run chown on all folders and setting the owner as the folder name minus the trailing /

  Some numpty ran chown -R username. in the /home folder on our webserver thinking he was in the desired folder. Needless to say the server is throwing a lot of wobbelys. We have over 200 websites and I don't want to chown them all individually so I'm trying to make a script that will change the owner of all the folders to the folder name, without the trailing /. This is all I have so far, once I can remove the / it will be fine, but I'd also like to check if the file contains a . in it, and if it doesn't then run the command, otherwise go to the next one. #!/bin/bash for f in * do test=$f; #manipluate the test variable chown -R $test $f done Any help would be great! • Windows Software to Save Arbitrary Application State

  VM software does a great job of saving state when you "turn it off," allowing instant and immediate return to that previous state. Is there some application for Windows that allows me to do the same thing, for any arbitrary software? It would allow me to save/restore state, possibly via a shell command or button that it appends to every window. Edit: For clarity, there are two types of apps: those that save their own states, and those that save others' states. Those that save their own state are like Chrome, which on load, reloads the windows you had open last time. That's not what I'm asking about; I'm asking for an app that can save the state of other apps, kind of like VM software does; but for any app. (A trivial test would be load notepad++, type a bunch of stuff, and save-state; on reset-state, you should be able to multi-level undo a lot of what you wrote, as if you never shut down the application.)

• Is it too late to start your career as a programmer at the age of 30 ?

  Assuming one graduated college at 30 years old and has 5 years of experience (no real job experience, just contributing to open source and doing personal projects) with various tools and programming languages, how would he or she be looked upon by hiring managers ? Will it be harder to find a job considering that (I got this information looking at various websites, user profiles on SO and here, etc.) the average person gets hired in this field at around 20 years old. I know that it's never too late to do what you're passionate about and the like but sometimes it is too late to start a career. Is this the case? Managers are always looking for fresh people and I often read job descriptions specifically asking for young people. I don't need answers of encouragement, I know the community here is great and I wouldn't get offended by even the most cold answers. Please don't close this as being too localized, I'm not referring to any specific country or region, talk about the region you're in. I would also appreciate if you justified your answer.

• I need help with Grub and restoring Windows?

  I started out with Windows XP and then I installed Zorin (a sub distro of Ubuntu) and then I installed Ubuntu. This was working great. Then I installed Windows 8 on yet another partition and couldn't get into my other OSs. I asked my tech teacher at school how to fix it and she said just clear the partition that I installed Windows 8 on, so I booted onto a live version of Ubuntu and cleared the Windows 8 partition. Okay then I rebooted and it still went into Windows 8 for some reason. So I got back onto live Ubuntu and it turns out Windows 8 partition didn't clear for some reason so I did it again (and I'm positive it was the Windows 8 partition). I still couldn't fix grub but I needed something out of my XP partition so I mounted it on the live Ubuntu and now all the XP partition have are the folders 'Boot', 'Recovery', 'System Volume Information', 'temp' and the files 'bootmgr', 'BOOTNXT', 'BOOTSECT.BAK' and 'Recovery.txt'. Anybody know how to fix this or what I did wrong? Also, if I try booting from my hard drive it shows the Windows and says 'preparing automatic repair' then 'Diagnosing your PC' then restarts. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

• Creating a webserver from scratch

  I know this is going to sound a humongous task and many of you would think why in the world would you want to do so or why re-invent the wheel. However I just want a project I can work on the side see how it goes and experiment ( I got a thirst for learning something new and this is a great challenge). Question Where would I start creating a server-side scripting like php, asp and (now) node.js I would like to have a few examples, and most importantly a CODEX/documentation where I can learn and find out more how it works.
