  I received the email like most of you about Jeff and crew stepping down and selling the blog to another company. That it is a long time associate and friend of the team we have all grown to know and love, I feel much better about the move. Who cares, Chris, you haven't blogged religiously in ages! I know, and its a crime. Blame life, Twitter, my kids, laziness or whatever else you can think of. I always tell myself I am going to make a comeback - - "Don't call it a comeback - I been here for years." But after a few posts I seem to lose my steam. Its hard to explain, hell, I can't explain it. • Good application for taking notes on 12.04?

  Is there a good note taking application in ubuntu like Evernote exists for windows and Mac users. Requirements for good applications:- A thumbnail/list preview for all the created notes. An integration with the email address so that we can view the notes anywhere anytime. Any easy way to input text, video, pdf, images etc. I have tried tomboy, basket notes. They aren't that good. Edit: Trying to install nevernote from an external source. • Is this a good use for ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem?

  I have an application that, among other things, imports documents, then emails necessary parties to let them know that a document has been imported. It turns out that determining whom to email, then performing the emailing, is what's taking the longest. I was thinking of doing something like this: var document = ImportDocument(); ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(s => SendEmail(document.Id)); return document; ... similar to DelayedJob in Rails, if that helps. Does that make sense in this context? What would you do?

• Java Developers: Is Ant still in the "main stream" for builds? Do we push new developers to learn it?

  We have been slowly replacing batch command files (windows .bat) which were simply jarring up the classes compiled in the developers IDE, with more comprehensive Ant builds (i.e. get from CVS, clean compile, jar, archive, email, etc.) I've spent a lot of time learning (and debugging issues) with Ant, so I'm most comfortable using it for these tasks. But I wonder if Ant is still in as wide usage as it was when I first started learning, or whether "the world has moved on" to something newer (and maybe slicker). (I've started to see more Maven build stuff distributed, which I've never used, for example.) The practical import of this question, is whether I push new developers to learn Ant, or whether they should be learning something else for builds? I'm never too on top of the trends, so it would be great to hear from other Java developers what they think is the best build tool, and what they think new developers should be learning.

• Keep user and user profile in different tables?

  I have seen in a couple of projects that developers prefer to keep essential user info in one table (email/login, password hash, screen name) and rest of the non essential user profile in another (creation date, country, etc). By non-essential I mean that this data is needed only occasionally. Obvious benefit is that if you are using ORM querying less fields is obviously good. But then you can have two entities mapped to same table and this will save you from querying stuff you don't need (while being more convenient). Does anybody know any other advantage of keeping these things in two tables?

  After I got done speaking at the SQL Server 2008 R2 Launch Event yesterday I came back to the hotel room for a web-meeting with some of the other teachers at the University of Washington. As teachers we are always looking to improve the knowledge transfer to our students – and the Program Director found an interesting study that I thought I might share here. Below is an un-labeled chart showing the effectiveness of learning methods according to a recent study. At the top are the labels. (“Teaching” here means students teaching each other). • How do I allow all possible IPs for Gmail servers through my ufw firewall?

  I am currently using the following rule: ufw allow out from my_local_ip to any port 587 This is a little too lax for my liking. I would like to tighten it up and restrict it to only gmail's smtp server ip addresses, but they are always changing. I used to just wait until an outgoing email didn't make it to its destination, then check syslog for the ip address that was blocked, then add that to the ufw configure script. However, now I have a need for much more reliability. Is there any way to use smtp.gmail.com in ufw? I don't think so, but thought I would ask. Any other ideas? Thanks.

• Can I require a large donation ($499) in order for a company to receive an extended version of my open source project? [closed]

  I want to make my project open source but some of its more advanced features are targeted to companies so I would like to require a donation before I send the source code to the donating company. It will be something like that: "If you want to use the extended features of XXXXXXX, please make a donation of $499 and you will receive the source code and the jar with the extended features. You will also receive personalized support by email." Is it legal and acceptable to do something like that? Can the companies donate an amount like that to an open source project? I mean, is it easy for them in terms of their accounting, tax, etc. to donate $499 dollars to an open source project. I know it is not a matter whether they will have money or not but more of a paying procedure matter.

  When I try to connect my Google account, the following happens: I open "Online Accounts" - the Google account appears in the left hand margin. When I highlight it, I am invited to grant access. There's a bug report on Launchpad here but it says the bug has been fixed. Not for me, apparently...

  I purchased a windows web host from Godaddy.com When I want to use an Email verification component (that wants to connect to the Internet) on my host, I get an error related to Web Permission denied. (ASP.NET 4) As I search, I found that Godaddy has changed web permission in ASP.NET and restrict some features of that. When I want to take web permission on my site, I get error 500 (Internal Server Error) Can I give permission to an assembly only or solve my problem in another way? • How to get notfications of ppa updates?

  How can I get notified of updates to a certain PPA? For example when I am interested in new package versions of a certain package in a certain PPA? If a user has the package in question installed and is using the default desktop, she probably get notified via an icon in the traybar or something like that. But I am searching for a method which works even when the package is not installed (and without gnome). It should be reliable and prompt. Does launchpad provides some RSS/Atom-Feed features for PPAs? Or email notifications? (As a sidenote: I am surprised that even with my own PPA I only get an upload notification via mail - but no notification when the binary package is finished.)

• Best practices for including open source code from other public projects?

  If I use an existing open source project that is hosted for example on github within one of my projects, should I check in the code from the other project into my public repo or not? I have mixed feelings about this, #1 I want to give proper credit and attribution to the original developer, and if appropriate I will contribute back any changes I need to make. However given that I have developed / tested against a specific revision of the other projects code, that is the version that I want to distribute to users of my project. Here is the specific use case to illustrate my point. I am looking for a more generalized answer than this specific case. I am developing simple framework using rabbitmq and python for outbound messages that will allow for sending sms, twitter, email, and is extensible to support additional messaging buses as well. There is a project on github that will make the creation and sending of SMS messages developed by another person. When I create my own repo how do I account for the code that I am including from the other project?

  I've been tasked to learn SQL Azure, as well as test all the Red Gate products on it. My one, BIG, fear has been that I'll receive some mongo bill in the mail because I've exceeded the MSDN testing limit. I know people that have had that problem. I've been trying to keep an eye on my usage, but, let's face it, it's not something I think about every day. But now I don't have to. Red Gate has been working with Azure, long before I showed up. They already released a little piece of software that I just found out about, it's called CloudTally. It gathers your usage and sends you a daily email so you can know if you're starting to approach that limit. Check it out, it's free.
