• Registering OCX on 64-bit Windows 7

  I want to use MSCOMM control in my MS Excel 2010 VBA. The control shall appear in Tools-> Additional Controls dialog box in VBE of MS Excel 2010. I am trying to register MSCOMM32.OCX on my 64-bit Windows 7 machine. However, as I try to register it using regsvr32 as shown in the command window below, I am getting shown error popup. What am I missing here? Why is this component not getting registered? Or this is not the correct way to include MSCOMM control in MS Excel VBA? I have read following: Registering OCX file manually http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vbgeneral/thread/1f00d6cc-00a9-4ca0-9698-535e2487af31 But to no avail.

• Venezuela's Highly Inflationary Economy Means Changes to Financial Statements

  This is a bit of an esoteric topic, but given the number of U.S. Companies (particularly oil companies) that operate and have subsidiaries in Venezuela, I think it is worthy of an honorable mention. As you may or may not know, Venezuela's currency has had some changes over the years. In 2008, the Venezuelan Bolivar became the Bolivar Fuerte which dropped three zeros. So Bs.10,000 became Bs.F.10 and all their bills and coins were changed to reflect this. Then on Jan. 8, 2010, the government devalued the currency by 100%. The conversion from VEF to USD dropped from 2.15 to 4.30. (I always wanted to visit Venezuela; I guess it's time to book my vacation). The SEC recently labeled Venezuela a highly inflationary economy. This means that US companies with investments/subsidiaries in Venezuela will need to apply highly inflationary accounting rules starting on Jan. 1, 2010. In addition, companies need to make more detailed disclosures when the Venezuelan reported balances differ from the actual US dollar denominated balances. In a nut shell, if you formerly used translation, then starting Jan 1 of this year, you must now use remeasurement (or temporal method) to restate your Venezuelan entity's financial statements. See ASC topic 830, Foreign Currency Matters, which states that "[t]he financial statements of a foreign entity in a highly inflationary economy shall be remeasured as if the functional currency were the reporting currency." For you non-accountants that I haven't bored and are still reading at this point, the reason why the SEC is doing this is to ensure financial statements are presented as accurately as possible. Hyperinflationary economies have volatile currencies, such as Venezuela (it's not every day a currency devalues 100% overnight) which can distort financial statements if the local currency (Venezuelan Bolivar Fuerte) is used as the functional currency. To make financial statements more accurate, the reporting currency of the U.S. parent (US dollars) should be used as the functional currency. FASB.orgactually has a nice write-up on this.

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/StuartBrierley/archive/2013/10/16/biztalk---removing-bam-activities-and-views-using-bm.exe.aspxOn the project I am currently working on, we are making quite extensive use of BAM within our growing number of BizTalk applications, all of which are being deployed and undeployed using the excellent Deployment Framework for BizTalk 5.0.Recently I had an issue where problems on the build server had left the target development servers in a state where the BAM activities and views for a particular application were not being removed by the undeploy process and unfortunately the definition in the solution had changed meaning that I could not easily recreate the file from source control.  To get around this I used the bm.exe application from the command line to manually remove the problem BAM artifacts - bm.exe can be found at the following path:C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2010\TrackingC:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2010\TrackingStep1 :Get the BAM Definition FileRun the following command to get the BAm definition file, containing the details of all the activities, views and alerts:bm.exe get-defxml -FileName:{Path and File Name Here}.xmlStep 2: Remove the BAM ArtifactsAt this stage I chose to manually remove each of my problem BAM activities and views using seperate command line calls.  By looking in the definition file I could see the names of the activities and views that I wanted to remove and then use the following commands to remove first the views and then the activities:bm.exe remove-view -name:{viewname}bm.exe remove-activity -name:{activityname}

  Day 2 of DevDays 2010 and again 5 interesting sessions at the World Forum in The Hague. The first session of the today in the big world forum theater was from Scott Hanselman, he gives a lap around .NET 4.0. In his way of presenting he talked about all kind of new features of .NET 4.0 like MEF, threading, parallel processing, changes and additions to the CLR and DLR, WPF and all new language features of .NET 4.0. After a small break it was ready for session 2 from Scott Allen about Tips, Tricks and Optimizations of LINQ. He talked about lazy and deferred executions, the difference between IQueryable and IEnumerable and the two flavors of LINQ syntax. The lunch was again very good prepared and delicious, but after that it was time for session 3 Web Vulnerabilities and Exploits from Alex Thissen. This was no normal session but more like a workshop, we decided what kind of subjects we discussed, the subjects where OWASP, XSS and other injections, validation, encoding. He gave some handy tips and tricks how to prevent such attacks. Session 4 was about the new features of C# 4.0 from Alex van Beek. He talked about Optional- en Named Parameters, Generic Co- en Contra Variance, Dynamic keyword and COM Interop features. He showed how to use them but also when not to use them. The last session of today and also the last session of DevDays 2010 was about WCF Best Practices from Gerben van Loon. He talked about 7 best practices that you must know when you are going to use WCF. With some quick demos he showed the problem and the solution for some common issues. It where two interesting days and next year i sure will be attending again.

• Ask the Readers: How Fast is Your Internet Connection?

  The federal government recently announced a broadband initiative that calls for 260 million homes to have 100Mbps Internet connections by the year 2020. This got us wondering, how fast is your current Internet connection? Photo by roland When it comes to the speed of our Internet connection, we all want the maximum possible. The FCC recently announced their National Broadband Plan, which is an initiative to improve the Internet infrastructure in the United States and provide higher speeds to everyone. You’ve also undoubtedly heard the news about Google getting into the mix with their program to bring ultra high-speed fiber broadband to 50,000 users in select cities. While we wait for those programs to come into fruition, we thought it would be cool to check out what kinds of speeds you’re getting now. Test Your Internet Connection Speed There are several sites out there you can use to test your Internet speeds, but probably the best site is Speedtest.net. It’s easy to use, and allows you test download and upload speeds to and from various locations in the US and throughout the world. If you already know the speeds you’re getting leave a comment and let us know. If you use Speedtest.com, just keep in mind that our comment system won’t allow you to copy their result links, but you can simply tell us what you get in the results. We’re especially interested in the results of those of you who have Verizon FIOS or Comcast’s “Ultra” service. Leave a comment and join in the discussion! The reality is that these are actually three different “products” that are versioned independently of each other but are related. • Logging Timeout'd Request in Apache 2.X

  Hello, I am migrating some applications from Apache 1.3 to 2.2. We used to run some tests where attacker opens some HTTP connection to our server, and do nothing. Apache 1.3 would log the following 408 code, for example: 126.1.86.85 - - [01/Dec/2010:06:26:19 +0000] "-" 408 - "-" 0 126.1.86.85 - - [01/Dec/2010:06:26:19 +0000] "-" 408 - "-" 0 But with Apache 2.2, nothing is logged to the log file. I run the same test by using netcat to open the connection: $ nc IP_victim PORT_victim $ nc 10.42.37.3 80 I would like to have Apache 2.2 log the same 408 code to the log file, so that we would know of attempted DoS attack from the outside. Do I need any more configuration in Apache 2 to enable this? I have tried some different configurations such as LogLevel = Debug, Timeout 30, RequestReadTimeout header=10 body=30. Thanks.

  Hi, I'm trying to install mailman + postfix + apache2 on a VPS running Ubuntu 8.10. I think I got it all according to the official Ubuntu docs. I'm getting this error though when trying to access mailman's admin page.   There were a lot of announcements made during the keynote at MIX10 today, most notable were the releases of Silverlight 4 RC, Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010, Expression Blend 4 Beta and the Windows Phone 7 Developer Tools.  I was glad to see that developers will be able to use Silverlight to create awesome applications for Windows Phone 7 so we can reuse our WPF and Silverlight skills to target mobile devices!   hi all, yesterday on a computer of a friend a strange thing happened. after booting the ports fo http, https and ftp are closed but e-mail is still working. in the control panel the windows firewall seems active even if he tries to deactivate it. i have a suspision that it is the faul of norton internet security 2010, we have tried to uninstall it, but the uninstallation did not work. when using the removal tool from symantec it just goes to 23% and then it crashes. the process ccSvcHst.exe is still running. how can i safeley remove the rest of norton internet security? thanks in advance [edit] norton internet security 2010 is sucesfully removed, but still no connectivity

  We run Exchange 2003, but have a mix of Outlook 2003/2007/2010 in the environment. We have three rooms that need to be configured as resources. Some observations we've made with resource scheduling/booking are: Outlook 2010 users have trouble with the native Exchange 2003 resource scheduling method and require direct booking to be configured via registry Outlook 2007 users are unable to use direct booking (is this accurate?) Outlook 2003 users can only use the native Exchange 2003 resource scheduling method (is this accurate?) Direct booking cannot be combined with the auto-accept agent What is the correct way to setup resource scheduling in a mixed environment like this? Thanks, Daniel

• Add shared contacts to Outlook 2007 address book

  Hello we just upgraded from exchange 2003 to 2010. 2010 seems to be pushing people to stop using public folders. Public folders had the nice feature that you could see the contacts of the public folder in your address book. I haven't found a way to add shared contacts to the Outlook address book. How do you do it? If I am unable to find the solution I will likely have to go through the hassle of migrating the public folders over. I was having a problem with that so I went the route of shared contacts.
