  • Logging erros in SqlLite database from C# Windows Forms Application

    I'm developing a win app in C# which communicates to a WCF Service. I want to log exceptions that are thrown on client to be logged in Sql Lite Database (Win app is using Sql Lite database for storing data locally). And then later it should be sent to the wcf service when required so that it can be useful for support/analysis/application improvement. I want a method which can be directly called in every catch block simply by LogHelper.Log(ex). I would like to know if anyone has done it through Enterprise library or used any good practice for such situation?

  • Do connection string DNS lookups get cached?

    Suppose the following: I have a database set up on database.mywebsite.com, which resolves to IP 111.111.1.1, running from a local DNS server on our network. I have countless ASP, ASP.NET and WinForms applications that use a connection string utilising database.mywebsite.com as the server name, all running from the internal network. Then the box running the database dies, and I switch over to a new box with an IP of 222.222.2.2. So, I update the DNS for database.mywebsite.com to point to 222.222.2.2. Will all the applications and computers running them have cached the old resolved IP address? I'm assuming they will have. Any suggestions along the lines of "don't have your IP change each time you switch box" are not too welcome as I cannot control this aspect of the situation, unfortunately. We are currently using the machine name of the box, which changes every time it dies and all apps etc. have to be updated with the new machine name. It hurts.

  • Domain driven design value object, how to ensure a unique value

    Hi, I am building a questionnaire creator. A questionnaire consists of sections, sections consist of pages and pages consist of questions. Questionnaire is the aggregate root. Sections, pages and questions can have what are called shortcodes which should be unique within a questionnaire (but not unique within the database hence they are not strictly an identity). I intended to make the shortcode a value object and wanted to include the business rule that it should be unique within the questionnaire but I am unsure how to ensure that. My understanding is that the value object should not access the repository or service layer so how does it find out if it is unique? Thanks for any help. Darren

  • Silverlight -> WCF -> Database -> problem

    Hi there, I have some silverlight code that calls a WCF service which then uses the Entity Framework to access the database and return records. Everything runs fine but ... when I replace the Entity Framework code with classic ADO.NET code I get an error: The remote server returned an error: NotFound When I call the ADO.NET code directly with a unit test it returns records fine so it's not a problem with the ADO.NEt code I used fiddler and it seems to say that the service cannot be found with a "500" error. i don't think it's anything to do with the service as the only thing I change is the technology to access the database. Anyone know what i'm missing here?

  • Database Performance Across 3 NetApp FAS2050

    I recently inherited a SQL Server 2005 box that has LUNs mounted on it from three different NetApp FAS2050 filers. The reason there are three is because the first two filers are out of space and our databases continually need more of it. What kind of performance impact (if any) does this setup have? Is it better to move the LUNs from the two other older filers to the newer one so that we have only one filer/controller for caching, etc ? This is in general. I apologize for not having more specifics.

  • how to read a User uploaded file, without saving it to the database

    I'd like to be able to read an XML file uploaded by the user (less than 100kb), but not have to first save that file to the database. I don't need that file past the current action (its contents get parsed and added to the database; however, parsing the file is not the problem). Since local files can be read with: File.read("export.opml") I thought about just creating a file_field for :uploaded_file, then trying to read it with File.read(params[:uploaded_file]) but all that does is throw a TypeError (can't convert HashWithIndifferentAccess into String). I really have tried a lot of various things (including reading from the /tmp directory as well), but could get none of them to work. I hope the brevity of my question doesn't mask the effort I've given to try to solve this on my own, but I didn't want to pollute this question with a hundred ways of how NOT to get it done. Big thanks to anyone who chimes in.

    In my ASP.NET web app I'm hashing my user passwords with SHA512. Despite much SO'ing and Googling I'm unclear how I should be storing them in the database (SQL2005) - the code below shows the basics of how I'm creating the hash as a string and I'm currently inserting it into the database into a Char(88) column as that seems to be the length created consistently Is holding it as a String the best way to do it, if so will it always be 88 chars on a SHA512 (as I have seen some bizarre stuff on Google)?     I'm trying to do cast a List to an IEnumerable, so I can verify that different lists are not null or empty: Suppose myList is a List < T .   • Access violation of member of pointer object

    So I am coding this client/server program. This code is from the client side. The client has an instance of an object mpqs_sieve *instance_; The reason I make it as a pointer is, that mpqs_sieve only has a constructor that takes 3 arguments, and I want to instantiate it at a later point in time. The client first gets some data from the server, and uses this to instantiate instance_. After this, it will request some more data, and upon receiving this (these are three coeffecients for a quadratic polynomial), it should set these in the instance_ object. However upon calling a member function of instance_, I get an access violation on one of the members of instance_ within that function call. I posted my code here: on pastebin, and I get the error on line 100. The call comes from line 71, and before that line 21. Any ideas to solve this? Thanks!

  • Extending DOMDocument and DOMNode: problem with return object

    I'm trying to extend the DOMDocument class so as to make XPath selections easier. I wrote this piece of code: class myDOMDocument extends DOMDocument { function selectNodes($xpath){ $oxpath = new DOMXPath($this); return $oxpath->query($xpath); } function selectSingleNode($xpath){ return $this->selectNodes($xpath)->item(0); } } These methods return a DOMNodeList and a DOMNode object, respectively. What I'd like to do now is to implement similar methods to the DOMNode objects. But obviously if I write a class (myDOMNode) that extends DOMNode, I won't be able to use these two extra methods on the nodes returned by myDOMDocument because they're DOMNode (and not myDOMNode) objects. I'm rather a beginner in object programming, I've tried various ideas but they all lead to a dead-end. Any hints? Thanks a lot in advance.

  • Object Reference Error filling a datarow

    This is the code: Dim dr() As DataRow = DataSet.Tables("TableName").Select("EVENTNAME = '" & name & "'") I get an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." Error when this line is executed. It is looping through a list of selected items in a listbox. I think it has to do with how I have the datarow declared because I can look at the name and I see it ok and I also do a null check on the name before I use it. Visual Studio 2008, VB.NET. Any ideas? Yep it was a wrong table name. I guess after looking at the code for 8 hours that minor detail I just wasn't thinking to check. Thanks!

I know I could reset each variable individually in the constructor; but is there a way to do this in bulk? Or am I doing something totally wrong that requires a different approach?     I've been using OpenGL ES 1.1 on the iPhone for 10 months, and in that time there is one seemingly simple task I have been unable to do: programmatically fade a textured object. To keep it simple: how can I alpha fade, under code control, a simple 2D triangle that has a texture (with alpha) applied to it. I would like to fade it in/out while it is over a scene, not a simple colored background. So far the only technique I have to do this is to create a texture with multiple pre-faded copies of the texture on it. (Yuck) As an example, I am unable to do this using Apple's GLSprite sample code as a starting point. It already textures a quad with a texture that has its own alpha. I would like to fade that object in and out.

  • XIB-instantiated Object's IBOutlet is nil

    I have a XIB set up like in this screenshot: File's owner is my main window controller. The XIB is also in charge of creating an object that serves as the delegate for the MGScopeBar view. As you can see in the screenshot, the scope bar delegate has an IBOutlet for the search field so that it can return it as an extra view as part of the delegate process. The problem I'm having is that when the delegate object is queried for the accessory view, the IBOutlet NSSearchField is nil. I'm fairly certain this has something to do with the order that objects are created, IBOutlets wired, etc, but I'm just a little lost as to where in the process I can expect the search field to exist so that the scope bar delegate can reference it properly.     Hi, I've got a value object, which stores info for example amount. The getAmount() getter returns amount in cents. However in various places, we need to get amount in dollar. There are 2 approaches I can think of: write a convert method and place it in a utility class. add a getAmountInDollar() getter in the value object. I prefer the second approach. What do you think? What are pros and cons of both approaches?

    I am currently using datasets for my data access layer. I currently store the connection string in the web.config file. I need the ability to change the connection to another database before any queries are processed. Is there an event that is triggered or a base class that can be modified that intercepts the process of retrieving the connection string from the web.config file? Is there any way to handle multiple database connections using the same code base and also take advantage of the connection pooling? I understand the best method is to get rid of datasets and use custom data objects. Any ideas?

    I read a statement from an exercise: construct a database instance which conforms to diagram 1 but not to diagram 2. The diagrams are different n-ary relationships that have different relationships. Diagram 1 has a many to one to many to one relationship. Diagram 2 has many to many to many to one relationship.
