• SQLAuthority News – Scaling Up Your Data Warehouse with SQL Server 2008 R2

  Data Warehouses are suppose to be containing huge amount of the data from the beginning. However, there are cases when too big is not enough. Every Data Warehouse Admin will agree that they have faced situation where they will need to scale up their data warehouse. Microsoft has released white paper discussing the same. Here is the abstract from the Microsoft Official site: SQL Server 2008 introduced many new functional and performance improvements for data warehousing, and SQL Server 2008 R2 includes all these and more. This paper discusses how to use SQL Server 2008 R2 to get great performance as your data warehouse scales up. We present lessons learned during extensive internal data warehouse testing on a 64-core HP Integrity Superdome during the development of the SQL Server 2008 release, and via production experience with large-scale SQL Server customers. Our testing indicates that many customers can expect their performance to nearly double on the same hardware they are currently using, merely by upgrading to SQL Server 2008 R2 from SQL Server 2005 or earlier, and compressing their fact tables. We cover techniques to improve manageability and performance at high-scale, encompassing data loading (extract, transform, load), query processing, partitioning, index maintenance, indexed view (aggregate) management, and backup and restore. • Setting up Google Analytics for multiple subdomains

'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0];s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s); })(); So if you wanna have a quick peak at the site the url is ApartmentJunkie.com, keep in mind the site is pretty bare bones but you'll get the idea -- basically it's very similar to craigslist in the sense that it's in the local space so people pick a city then get sent to a subdomain that is specific for that city, e.g. winnipeg.mb.apartmentjunkie.com. I put that up late last night then had a look at the analytics and found that I am seeing only the request uri portion of the URLs in analytics as I would with any other site only with this one it's a problem as winnipeg.mb.apartmentjunkie.com/map/ and brandon.mb.apartmentjunkie.com/map/ are two different pages and shouldn't be lumped together as /map/ I know the kneejerk response is likely going to be "hey just setup a different google analytics profile for each subdomain" but there will eventually be a lot of subdomains so google's cap of 50 is going to be too limited and even more important I want to see the data in aggregate for the most part. I am thinking of making a change to the javascript, to something like: _gaq.push(['_trackPageview',String(document.domain) + String(document.location)]); But am unsure if this is the best way and figured someone else on wm.se would have had a similar situation that they could talk a bit about.

• Can't access my accelerated hard disk from msdos after installing linux on ssd cache

  I mistakenly installed Ubuntu on my ssd (forgot my PC actually came with one), when it detected a ~31GiB disk that it wanted to install to, I was a bit confused since I had brought out 30Gb in my primary disk for it, but I clicked continue. After installation, I tried to boot back into my Windows and it brought out some Intel Raid Disk Utility stuff saying I should disable acceleration on a disk something couldn't be found, I canceled it but whatever I tried, recovery tools, setups etc, I couldn't just access the drive which was apparently using the SSD as cache. Since then I've been stuck. I tried setting the 'raid' flag to the disk from 'gParted', still I couldn't. I tried the diskraid utility from windows recover disk, it said it couldn't detect any raid, diskpart sees the partition but doesn't see the volume, when I remove the raid flag, it sees the volume as one of raw type, and I can't access anything. I can however mount the drive from terminal in Ubuntu and access my files, but I don't have any backup media at the moment so I can do a factory re-install. Please how do I go about solving the issue, precisely I would like to know how to boot into the drive again. Thanks!

• Closed-loop Recommendation Engines: Analyst Insight report on Oracle Real-Time Decisions (RTD)

  In November 2011, Helena Schwenk of MWD Advisors, published her analysis on Oracle Real-Time Decisions.  She summarizes as follows: "In contrast to other popular approaches to implementing predictive analytics, RTD focuses on learning from each interaction and using these insights to adjust what is presented, offered or displayed to a customer. Likewise its capabilities for optimising decisions within the context of specific business goals and a report-driven framework for assessing the performance of models and decisions make it a strong contender for organisations that want to continuously improve decision making as part of a customer experience marketing, e-commerce optimisation and operational process efficiency initiative." This is an outstanding report to share with a prospect or client as it goes into great detail about the product and its capabilities.  It also highlights the differences in Oracle's Real-Time Decisions product vs. other closed loop recommendation engines. • Cannot FTP without simultaneous SSH connection?

  I'm trying to set up an old box as a backup server (running 10.04.4 LTS). I intend to use 3rd party software on my PC to periodically connect to my server via FTP(S) and to mirror certain files. For some reason, all FTP connection attempts fail UNLESS I'm simultaneously connected via SSH. For example, if I use putty to test the connection to port 21, the system hangs and times out. I get: 220 Connected to LeServer USER lucas 331 Please specify the password. PASS [password] <cursor> However, when I'm simultaneously logged in (in another session) everything works: 220 Connected to LeServer USER lucas 331 Please specify the password. PASS [password] 230 Login successful. Basically, this means that my software will never be able to connect on its own, as intended. I know that the correct port is open because it works (sometimes) and nmap gives me: Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2012-03-20 16:15 CDT Interesting ports on xx.xxx.xx.x: Not shown: 995 closed ports PORT STATE SERVICE 21/tcp open ftp 22/tcp open ssh 53/tcp open domain 139/tcp open netbios-ssn 445/tcp open microsoft-ds Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.15 seconds My only hypothesis is that this has something to do with iptables. Maybe it's allowing only established connections? I don't think that's how I set it up, but maybe? • ubuntu one syncronizing problems

  I am a user of Ubuntu and Ubuntu One. First: I had a serious problem with ubuntu one. I have a windows and several Ubuntu machine and they all sync one account. My first problem is that i can't really delete files. Whenever I delete something Ubu One resync it, so it appears again in my folder. Furthermore, when i move something to another dir it synconize the new location and resync the old one, so i got doubled my files. I can't reorganize my files. So i tried to delete the duplicated files through the web dash, but i cant reorder and select multiple files by extension. For example i wanted to move all PDF to another location... Second: I can't configure in the ubuntu one app the loacation of the main One folder. For example i want my One folder to be on another partition than my HOME folder. It is a main problem in linux and windows also. I tried to move that folder in windows with the hardlink method. So i uninstalled the U1, then i created a folder link to another drive, than installed the U1. THEN i lost all my files in my U1. Lucky thing that i have a backup, but i thought U1 is a stable solution for me, and i planned to extend my space, but these bugs are major problems! It's worth to pay for it if it's working perfectly. I think it's more important than releasing a new version in every month.

My Session is a hands-on lab (HOL) on MySQL Cluster.If you are interested in familiarize a bit with MySQL Cluster this is definitely a session for you. I will start by briefly introducing MySQL Cluster and its architecture. Then I will guide you through the needed steps to install a local MySQL Cluster, connect to it (using the command line), monitor its logs, and safe shutdown it.We will hence have a chance to see which are the most common commands using in MySQL Cluster administration (e.g. Cluster backup) as well as the most common operations (e.g. online datanode add). Cluster's users and customers have the flexibility to choose whether they prefer to use a SQL or NoSQL approach to connect to MySQL Cluster, so, during the last part of the HOL, we will see how to connect to MySQL Cluster using the NoSQL NDB API.   I have always used the LinkedIn toolbar for Outlook to sort out, upload and sync my contacts. Because of this I have over 2000 contacts in my contacts list that I sync with my phone, Plaxo, live, Google and others. I got a surprise the other day when my LinkedIn account was suspended and I was unable to login.   Figure: Bad, account suspended   So I contacted LinkedIn customer services to find out what the problem is, and here is the response: Dear Martin, We have recently noticed a large number of page searches and profile views through your LinkedIn account. We are aware that you may be using an automated or manual process to systematically view LinkedIn web pages. The information within LinkedIn is provided by our users for usage on the site only. In order to protect user privacy, our User Agreement prohibits using: 1. Automated or manual means to view an excessively high number of profiles or mini-profiles. 2. Automated means to run searches to collect or store data obtained from our site. We have placed a restriction on your account until you agree to stop using these or similar methods to view pages on LinkedIn. We look forward to your reply to discuss this further. • How to zero out a drive?

  I'm currently running Ubuntu 12.04 and want to completely format my laptop so I can install Windows 7 (replace Ubuntu). When I put in my bootable USB with the OS it just shows a black screen with a white blinking cursor on the top left corner. I wait for hours (to be specific 5 whole hours) waiting for something to happen but I get nothing, so I pull out the USB and my Ubuntu 12.04 loads up. Repeated this several times with putting different boot priority options on top-est that relate to USB but the results are same. I go and visit some sites on the net like this http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/cant-replace-ubuntu-with-windows.175716/ that say I have to zero out my hard drive. My question is how? Note: Erasing out all my data is no problem cause I have nothing important to backup. If I have to lose my primary OS (Ubuntu 12.04) in the process I am ready to as my aim is just to install Windows 7 successfully. Please don't answer that there is something wrong with my USB or my USB reader/port/hardware or the content inside the USB cause they all works fine on my brothers PC as it boots up flawlessly.

• Troubleshoot broken ZFS

  I have one zpool called tank in RaidZ1 with 5x1TB SATA HDDs. I'm using Ubuntu Server 11.10 Oneric, kernel 3.0.0-15-server. Installed ZFS from ppa also I'm using zfs-auto-snapshot. The ZFS file system when zfs module loaded to the kernel hangs my computer. Before it I created few new file systems: zfs create -V 10G tank/iscsi1 zfs create -V 10G tank/iscsi2 zfs create -V 10G tank/iscsi3 I shared them through iSCSI by /dev/tank/iscsiX path. And my computer started to hanging sometimes when I used tank/iscsiX by iSCSI, do not know why exactly. I switched off iSCSI and started to remove this file systems: zfs destroy tank/iscsi3 I'm also using zfs-auto-snapshot so I had snapshots and without -r key my command not destroying the FS. So I issued next command: zfs destroy tank/iscsi3 -r The tank/iscsi3 FS was clean and contain nothing - it was destroyed without an issue. But tank/iscsi2 and tank/iscsi1 contained a lot of information. I tried zfs destroy tank/iscsi2 -r After some time my computer hang out. I rebooted computer. It didn't boot very fast, HDDs starts working like a crazy making a lot of noise, after 15 minutes HDDs stopped go crazy and OS booted at last. All seems to be ok - tank/iscsi2 was destroyed. After file systems at the tank was accessible, zpool status showed no corruption. I issued new command: zfs destroy tank/iscsi1 -r Situation was repeated - after some time my computer hang out. But this time ZFS seams not to healed itself. After computer switched on it started to work: loading scripts and kernel modules, after zfs starting to work it hanging my computer. I need to recover else ZFS file systems which lying in the same zpool. Few month ago I backup OS to flash drive. Booting from backed-up OS and import have the same results - OS starts hanging. How to recover my data at ZFS tank?

• Firefox 12's hardware acceleration on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  After I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32 bits), Firefox 12 works fine but without hardware acceleration. Needless to say I have the latest nVidia's proprietary drivers installed and my Firefox Preferences, on "Advanced" tab, "Browsing" section, have the option "Use hardware acceleration when available" checked. I have tried the following things before asking this question: Creating a boolean key "webgl.force-enabled" and set it to true on Firefox's page about:config; Starting a new profile like commented on thread Mozilla Firefox 12 is very slow on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS; I have updated my nVidia driver to version 295.53. And none of this have worked. As you can see below in my Firefox's page about:support report, "Graphics" section shows no "GPU Accelerated Windows": Adapter Description NVIDIA Corporation -- GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 Vendor ID NVIDIA Corporation Device ID GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 Driver Version 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.53 WebGL Renderer NVIDIA Corporation -- GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 -- 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.53 GPU Accelerated Windows 0 AzureBackend skia I use the following site to test hardware acceleration: http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Performance/FishBowl/ On Windows 7 I get 60 fps even with 1,750 fishes on browser's Full Screen Mode (1680x1050x32bit-color). On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, same nVidia drivers (as shown in report), won't go faster than 15 fps with only 1,000 fishes. Can anybody help me? Best Regards,
