• Is there any real benefit to using ASP.Net Authentication with ASP.Net MVC?

  I've been researching this intensely for the past few days. We're developing an ASP.Net MVC site that needs to support 100,000+ users. We'd like to keep it fast, scalable, and simple. We have our own SQL database tables for user and user_role, etc. We are not using server controls. Given that there are no server controls, and a custom membershipProvider would need to be created, where is there any benefit left to use ASP.Net Auth/Membership? The other alternative would seem to be to create custom code to drop a UniqueID CustomerID in a cookie and authenticate with that. Or, if we're paranoid about sniffers, we could encrypt the cookie as well. Is there any real benefit in this scenario (MVC and customer data is in our own tables) to using the ASP.Net auth/membership framework, or is the fully custom solution a viable route?

• How can I detect when the .NET framework is "turned off"?

  My application requires the .NET Framework version 3.5. I recently ran into a customer that had the .NET Framework installed but turned off. In this case, my installer (InstallShield 2009) does not prompt the user to install the Framework (because it is already installed) and when my application runs it crashes immediately. I tried another .NET application and it also crashes immediately. Is there any way to detect this situation and handle it more gracefully? Just detecting this during install is not ideal since the .NET Framework can be turned off at any time. Ideally, the application would be able to check and display a friendly message to the user telling them they need to turn on the .NET Framework.

  Consider the following method signature: public static bool TryGetPolls(out List<Poll> polls, out string errorMessage) This method performs the following: accesses the database to generate a list of Poll objects. returns true if it was success and errorMessage will be an empty string returns false if it was not successful and errorMessage will contain an exception message. Is this good style? Update: Lets say i do use the following method signature: public static List<Poll> GetPolls() and in that method, it doesn't catch any exceptions (so i depend the caller to catch exceptions). How do i dispose and close all the objects that is in the scope of that method? As soon as an exception is thrown, the code that closes and disposes objects in the method is no longer reachable.

• ssms cannot connect to default sql server instance without specifying port number

  I have multiple SQL Server 2005 instances on a box. From SSMS on my desktop I can connect to that box's named instances with no problem. After some recent network configuration changes, when I want to connect to the default instance from SSMS on my desktop, I have to specify the port number. Before the network changes, I did not have to specify the port number of the default instance. If I remote to any other box (including the one in question), and use that box's SSMS to connect to that default instance, success. From my desktop, and only from my desktop, I have to specify the port number. Is it a SQL Server configuration that I've missed? Is it possible something in my PC's configuration is getting in the way? Where would I look, or what could I pass on to the network folks to help them resolve this? Any help is appreciated.

• Mercurial hg clone error - "abort: error: Name or service not known"

  I have installed the latest hg package available for Fedora Linux. However, hg clone reports an error. hg clone http://localmachine001:8000/ repository reports: "abort: error: Name or service not known" localmachine001 is a computer within the local network. I can ping it from my Linux box without any problems. I can also use the same http address and browse the existing code. However, hg clone does not work. If I execute the same command from my Macintosh machine, I can easily clone the repository. Some Internet resources recommend editing .hgrc file, and adding proxy to it: [http_proxy] host=proxy:8080 I have tried that without any success. Also, I assume that proxy is not needed in this case, since the hg server machine is in my local network. Can anyone recommend me what should I do, or how could I track the problem? Thank you in advance.

• Drawing selected state on custom UITableViewCell

  So I have a customer UITableViewCell whose whole display in drawn in drawRect. When it draws it creates CGLayers so that it can reuse certain pieces when something is changed. I have changed my UITableViewCellSelectionStyle to None because I don't want the default selected view to cover my drawing. So I call setNeedsDisplay in setSelected:animated: for my cell. But by the time drawRect is called, setSelected:animated: has already been called again to deselect the cell. In my table view controller in didSelectRowAtIndexPath I call deselectRowAtIndexPath as Apple advises. Any ideas? Thanks.

Now I would like to change submit method from <input type="submit" id="testClick" value="Submit" /> To some javascript method DoSubmit(). What I tried is : Invoke click on that submit button Invoke submit on form ('form1').submit(), document.forms['form1'].submit() jQuery forms with ('form1').AjaxSubmit(); Create jQuery AJAX $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: $("#form1").attr("action"), data: $("#form1").serialize(), success: function() { alert("epic win!!!1!1!") }, error: function(XMLHttpRequest, textStatus, errorThrown) { alert("epic fail!") } }); All those method created normal request (not AJAX), or they didn't work. So anyone know how I can do AJAX submit "Form", from JavaScript and strongly typed mechanism (public AcrionResult MyFormAction(FormModel model); ) will work?

• Modal View Controller Undesirably Hides Tab Bar

  I am working on an application that requires user authentication to access a profile. The profile section is located solely under one tab (and all others tabs do not require authentication). I currently present a authentication view controller modally (and then dismiss on success) when the user selects the profile tab. However, this approach prevents the user from deciding not to register / login (that is, all tabs are hidden once the authentication screen is presented modally). I don't want the user to be able to dismiss the modal view controller, but rather have it modal only for the profile tab. Is this possible? Can I have tabs visible while having a modal view controller? What is the best approach here. Thanks.

• MySQLi PHP: Check if SQL INSERT query was fully successful using MySQLi

  Hi, I have this big function that gets a lot of different data and insert it into multiple tables.. Not all the data is always available so not all the SQL INSERT queries are successful. I need to check which SQL INSERT query was fully successful and which wasn't to the do something with this data (like inserting into a log table or similar). Just to give you an example of how I think it can be done: $sql = 'INSERT INTO data_table (ID, column1, column2) VALUES(?, ?, ?)'; if ($stmt->prepare($sql)) { $stmt->bind_param('iss', $varID, $var1, $var2); if ($stmt->execute()) { $success == TRUE; //or something like that } } I'm not completely sure this is the best way and if its always really show if the data was inserted into the table... Any suggestions??

• Help make sense of a KillDisk error/log

  I have a hard drive that I've been trying to reformat. I tried reformatting it in the windows XP and 7 installers, and in an Ubuntu live cd with gparted. I tried using dd to 'zero' the drive as well with no success. Finally I ran across KillDisk after a search. • Microsoft.Office.Interop.MSProject - why are my files always locked (by me!) when I try to open them

  Hi all, I'm trying to use Interop to manipulate MS Project 2003 (MPP) files. My problem is that MS Project reports that the files is already opened by another user (me!) and that I can open it only as read-only. Obviously, I've tried to restart studio, then windows (xp) but with no effect. The file attribute for Readonly is cleared on the file. Any suggestions for what I might try?!   Hi, I have a Customers table and would like to assign a Salesperson to each customer in a round-robin fashion. Customers --CustomerID --FName --SalespersonID Salesperson --SalespersonID --FName So, if I have 15 customers and 5 salespeople, I would like the end result to look something like this: CustomerID -- FName -- SalespersonID 1 -- A -- 1 2 -- B -- 2 3 -- C -- 3 4 -- D -- 4 5 -- E -- 5 6 -- F -- 1 7 -- G -- 2 8 -- H -- 3 9 -- I -- 4 10 -- J -- 5 11 -- K -- 1 12 -- L -- 2 13 -- M -- 3 14 -- N -- 4 15 -- 0 -- 5 etc... I've been playing around with this for a bit and am trying to write some SQL to update my Customers table with the appropriate SalespersonID, but am having some trouble getting it to work. • How to use jQuery .each() - I get a value, but it's the wrong one

  I am returning a JSON object (as a String) through a servlet. The JSON object looks like this: {"3":"Martin Luther","30":"Boris Becker","32":"Joseph Goebels","19":"Leonardo Da Vinci","31":"Adolf Hitler"} My jQuery looks like this (the submission of data is correct because I get a proper looking result from the servlet): $.ajax( { type : "GET", url : "MyServlet", data : queryString + "count=" + variables, success : function(resultObj) { $.each(resultObj, function(key, value) { $("#resultCount").html(key+", "+value); }); } }); However when I try to print the results, that is the variables key and value, I get a number for the key but not a number from the JSONObject and an empty string instead of the value. Essentially the question is about how to "extract" the information from a JSON object.

• ffdshow codec can not work with media play 12 in windows 7 ?

  The reason of this issue is caused by media player 12 (in windows 7 professional) using mircsoft default codec which don't support mp4 decode. The ffdshow codec can not replace microsoft default codec in windows 7 (windows7 does not allow that in default). I find some third party tools can switch media player default codec to ffdshow but this is really inconvenience for our customer. Is there any way I can make a program to switch microsoft default codec to ffdshow codec? Like change some entries in windows registry?

• Google Maps API Geocode gives error "Invalid label" in Firefox

Also, other json data works fine, for instance flickr ("http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?tags=cat&tagmode=any&format=json&jsoncallback=?).   I am using jQuery to make an AJAX call to a ruby method in my controller. The javascript looks something like this: var latLongJSON = { "address": [ {"lat" : 50, "long" : 50} ] }; var returnedAddresses; $.ajax({ type: "GET", data: latLongJSON, url: "map/getaddresses", success: function(data) { returnedAddresses = JSON.parse(data); } }); Then in my 'getaddresses' method, my parameter coming through looks like: Parameters: {"address"=>"[object Object]"} I'm not sure what to do with this. I'm fairly new to Ruby, and I'm not sure if I need to convert this to something else, or what. Ideally I want to be able to pass in multiple sets of lat/long in the 'address' array, then be able to iterate over those in my Ruby code.

• jQuery .ajax() call to page method works in FF only when async is false

  I'm calling a page method using .ajax() and it works in IE8 whatever the value of async is. However, in FF3.6, it only works with async set to false. When async is set to true, in Firebug, I just see status aborted. The page validates. The interface javax.security.auth.message.ServerAuth has the method: AuthStatus validateRequest( MessageInfo messageInfo, javax.security.auth.Subject clientSubject, javax.security.auth.Subject serviceSubject ) AuthStatus can be one of several constants like FAILURE or SUCCESS. The question is: How can I get the roles from a "role datebase" with JSR 196? Example: The server receives a request with a SSO token (CAS token for example), checks whether the token is valid, populates the remote user object with roles fetches from a database via JDBC or from REST service via http. Is the role fetching in the scope of JSR 196? How could that be implemented? Do I have to use JSR 196 together with JSR 115 to use custom authentication and a custom role source?

• Server side caching doesn't work with HttpHandler

  If we use an aspx page with a Caching Profile, the server caches images that are loaded with the aspx page. So if ten clients load the same image through the aspx page (same url), for one client the image is gotten out of the db, for the nine others it is cached. When we use a HttpHandler, this doesn't happen. The image is always fetched from the database. We have tried all different settings without any success. (we have checked this link and have not been able to cache on server side).

• MapViewOfFile shared between 32bit and 64bit processes

  Hi, I'm trying to use MapViewOfFile in a 64 bit process on a file that is already mapped to memory of another 32 bit process. It fails and gives me an "access denied" error. Is this a known Windows limitation or am I doing something wrong? Same code works fine with 2 32bit processes. • Unique identifier for an email

  I am writing a C# application which allows users to store emails in a MS SQL Server database. Many times, multiple users will be copied on an email from a customer. If they all try to add the same email to the database, I want to make sure that the email is only added once. MD5 springs to mind as a way to do this. I don't need to worry about malicious tampering, only to make sure that the same email will map to the same hash and that no two emails with different content will map to the same hash. My question really boils down to how one would combine multiple fields into one MD5 (or other) hash value. Some of these fields will have a single value per email (e.g. subject, body, sender email address) while others will have multiple values (varying numbers of attachments, recipients). I want to develop a way of uniquely identifying an email that will be platform and language independent (not based on serialization). Any advice?

• Consuming an .ics in YQL

  How would one consume an ICS file in YQL? Given an .ics such as: http://www.hebcal.com/export/ba/8a35a5efbb27548bc0272b94b8de96.ics?subscribe=1&v=1&year=2010&month=x&nh=on&tag=fp.ql&c=off How would I go about using YQL to select certain events based on fields, etc. I've tried the standard formats, and the only format that seems to even parse the file is HTML - which puts it all in a <p>, and removes the line returns that give the file meaning. I've had some success with using Yahoo Pipe's Fetch Feed Source, but was wondering if it's possible to do this entirely in YQL. Any ideas?
