• Excel - working in a bank

  I am supposed to go to an interview to a bank for just supporting managers in projects. It's a part-time job and the thing is that bank uses Excel for everything. Modifications of tables of really lot of data... What can I expect to find in the test of Excel? I have some books that are around 1000 pages thick but I don't have time and also don't feel like reading everything that's in them. • Is there a way to automatically display the username on the Desktop background in Win7?

  We have computer used by multiple users running Win7. Unfortunately, people forget to log out, or they just use the session that is currently open, or they think that they're using their own session, but in the meantime, somebody else has logged on without logging out. To make it clear to people that they're using somebody else's session, I'd like to display the username of the person logged on (the one that's visible in the start menu) on the Desktop wallpaper; something like "John Doe's session". Is that possible?

• How to map email addresses on subdomains

  Is it possible to create email addresses like these: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] and have them all handled by one mail server, as three different mail boxes? (Many examples I've seen talk about directing mail to [email protected] into the same mail box as [email protected] - but this is not what I'm looking for.) I haven't specified the server technology being used because I'm wondering if this is generally possible. If you know that server x can do this, please mention it in your answer! Is it correct that MX records can be set to direct email to all subdomains *.mydomain.com to one mail server? Is that still true if there are also web sites at those subdomains (using A records)? • Why does MOVE command in DOS treat wildcard patterns oddly in this case?

  I am using the "move" command with a wildcard pattern in the CMD prompt under Windows 7. In my source directory, I have the following files: movie1.avi movie1.avi_metadata movie2.avi movie2.avi_metadata If I type the command move source\*.avi dest it will move all four files even though I would expect it to only move the two *.avi files and not the *.avi_metadata files. As expected, move source\*.a dest and move source\*.av dest don't move any files. However when the length of the extension for the wildcard pattern is 3 characters, it will move all extensions that begin with those first three characters. Is this a bug in the "move" command or expected behavior and is it documented anywhere? Edit: John Watts notes that this is probably do to "short" filenames. Is it possible then to make commands in the CMD interpreter only operate on long filenames and to ignore short filenames?

  I have a netbook, with window 7 starter. I was trying to change the wallpaper, and found this application: John's Background Switcher which said that I can make slide show of themes, I guess it's as you set wallpaper with window 7 ultimate. The default wallpaper was still fine until downloading that application. After trying it, error occurred, I couldnt change the background, so I closed it, but then the default wallpaper changed its size, the central image dropped out of screen, can see aaprt of it on `bottom right hand corner. I tried to adjust the image into center, but it didnt work when i right click on desktop - Graphic option - panel fit - "center image". Anybody can help me? how to adjust it back to normal as original?

• Syntax error on token "QUOTE", VariableDeclaratorId expected after this token

  I've posted a bigger chunk of the code below. You can see that initially QUOTE was procedural- coded in place. I'm trying to learn how to use declarative design so I want to do the same thing but by using resources. It seems like I need to access the string.xml thru the @R.id tag and identify QUOTE with that string value. But I don't know enough to negotiate this. Any tips? • How can I dynamically change auto complete entries in a C# combobox or textbox?

  I have a combobox in C# and I want to use auto complete suggestions with it, however I want to be able to change the auto complete entries as the user types, because the possible valid entries are far too numerous to populate the AutoCompleteStringCollection at startup. As an example, suppose I'm letting the user type in a name. I have a list of possible first names ("Joe", "John") and a list of surnames ("Bloggs", "Smith"), but if I have a thousand of each, then that would be a million possible strings - too many to put in the auto complete entries. So initially I want to have just the first names as suggestions ("Joe", "John") , and then once the user has typed the first name, ("Joe"), I want to remove the existing auto complete entries and replace them with a new set consisting of the chosen first name followed by the possible surnames ("Joe Bloggs", "Joe Smith"). In order to do this, I tried the following code: void InitializeComboBox() { ComboName.AutoCompleteMode = AutoCompleteMode.SuggestAppend; ComboName.AutoCompleteSource = AutoCompleteSource.CustomSource; ComboName.AutoCompleteCustomSource = new AutoCompleteStringCollection(); ComboName.TextChanged += new EventHandler( ComboName_TextChanged ); } void ComboName_TextChanged( object sender, EventArgs e ) { string text = this.ComboName.Text; string[] suggestions = GetNameSuggestions( text ); this.ComboQuery.AutoCompleteCustomSource.Clear(); this.ComboQuery.AutoCompleteCustomSource.AddRange( suggestions ); } However, this does not work properly. It seems that the call to Clear() causes the auto complete mechanism to "turn off" until the next character appears in the combo box, but of course when the next character appears the above code calls Clear() again, so the user never actually sees the auto complete functionality. It also causes the entire contents of the combo box to become selected, so between every keypress you have to deselect the existing text, which makes it unusable. If I remove the call to Clear() then the auto complete works, but it seems that then the AddRange() call has no effect, because the new suggestions that I add do not appear in the auto complete dropdown. I have been searching for a solution to this, and seen various things suggested, but I cannot get any of them to work - either the auto complete functionality appears disabled, or new strings do not appear. Here is a list of things I have tried: Calling BeginUpdate() before changing the strings and EndUpdate() afterwards. Calling Remove() on all the existing strings instead of Clear(). Clearing the text from the combobox while I update the strings, and adding it back afterwards. Setting the AutoCompleteMode to "None" while I change the strings, and setting it back to "SuggestAppend" afterwards. Hooking the TextUpdate or KeyPress event instead of TextChanged. Replacing the existing AutoCompleteCustomSource with a new AutoCompleteStringCollection each time. None of these helped, even in various combinations. Spence suggested that I try overriding the ComboBox function that gets the list of strings to use in auto complete. Using a reflector I found a couple of methods in the ComboBox class that look promising - GetStringsForAutoComplete() and SetAutoComplete(), but they are both private so I can't access them from a derived class. I couldn't take that any further. I tried replacing the ComboBox with a TextBox, because the auto complete interface is the same, and I found that the behaviour is slightly different. With the TextBox it appears to work better, in that the Append part of the auto complete works properly, but the Suggest part doesn't - the suggestion box briefly flashes to life but then immediately disappears. • Moving from WCF RIA Beta to RC: best practices?

  I have an existing WCF RIA project built on the Release Candidate; I'm now moving to the Release version & have discovered many changes. David Scruggs made the following comment on his (MSDN) blog: "If you’ve written anything in SIlverlight 4 RIA Services, you’ll need to rewrite it. There has been a lot of refactoring and namespace moves." Having made a brief attempt to compile the old solution with the new RIA framework I'm inclined to agree. My current plan is to: remove the Silverlight Business Application projects from the Solution rebuild the EF4 items from the database create a new Silverlight Business Application project re-add the files (XAML, CS) from the old Silverlight Business Application project Does this sound like a reasonable approach? I think it's cleaner than trying to manually alter the existing project.

• How do I stub a view in rspec-2

  I'm in the process of upgrading an app to Rails 3/Rspec 2. I see that stubbing a view helper method has changed in Rspec 2. It looks like instead of doing template.stub!, we're now supposed to do view.stub!, but I can't seem to get this to work on beta 10. I get an "undefined local variable or method `view' for # < RSpec::Core::ExampleGroup::Nested_1::Nested_1::Nested_1:0x106785fd0" error. I see that in this commit David removed the view method, but I can't figure out what it was replaced with. Something in ActionView::TestCase::Behavior? I'm on rails 3.0.0.beta3. Any idea what I'm missing?

• Host new WF4 workflows in appfabric

  Hello, I am new to using AppFabric to host WF services. I am trying to write a workflow admin application that will allow users to create xaml workflow definitions using the hosted WF4 designer, and then somehow allow those workflow defitions to be automatically deployed and hosted in AppFabric with the click of a button. I have the designer going, and I have read a couple of tutorials on how to host workflow services in AppFabric such as http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee677238.aspx, but my problem is how to deploy and host the workflow services via code. Does anyone know if this sort of "autodeploy/host" thing can be done with AppFabric? If so, could you point me in the right direction on this? -David

  Iam working on a project which involves writing a Mork File (Mork is a database format used by Mozilla to store url history and other information.) It has been replaced by an enhanced version of SQLite in latest Mozilla 3.0. • mySQL date range problem

  Hey all i am in need of a little help with figuring out how to get a range of days for my select query. Here is the code i am trying out: select id, idNumber, theDateStart, theDateEnd from clients WHERE idNumber = '010203' AND theDateStart >= '2010-04-09' AND theDateEnd <= '2010-04-09'; This is what the data in the table looks like: TheDateStart = 2010-04-09 TheDateEnd = 2010-04-11 When testing that code above, it does not populate anything. If i take out the TheEndDate, it populates but with some other tables data as well which it should not do (it should only get one record). I know the problem is within the two date's. I'm not sure how to go about getting a date range for theDateStart and theDateEnd since if someone tries it, say, on 2010-04-10, it still needs to know its within rage of the 2010-04-09 - 2010-04-11. But right now, it does not... Any help would be great! :o) David

  Hey all, this is the code i have to check for a day thats equal to the list of days in the comma seperated list: for(var i = 0; i < daysHidden.length; i++){ if (daysHidden[i] == d.getDate()); { alert(daysHidden[i] + '=' + d.getDate()); } } the daysHidden = 1 (its the only thing in the list April 1st is already gone and todays the 2nd so 1 is the only one in the list) and d.getDate() has 1-30 (for april) When i run the code, however, it keeps looping through the if code when it should only loop once (when it finds that 1=1 However, i keep getting the alert box that says: 1=1 1=2 1=3 etc.... 1=30 So i do not know what i am doing incorrect? I already tried putting them as strings: if (daysHidden[i].ToString == d.getDate().ToString); But that doesnt seem to work.... Any help would be great :) David

  Hi, Does anyone know the current state of SVG SMIL animation support in the popular browsers? It looks like Safari, Chrome, and Opera support it. Firefox has confusing reports in their dev pages about SMIL support having been added, but I don't see it as of v3.6: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=216462 I am ignoring IE since they don't even support SVG at all, and probably never will, much less SMIL. The other thing - just comparing this test page between Safari, Chrome, and Opera: http://srufaculty.sru.edu/david.dailey/svg/ovaling.svg looks like Opera is the only one that renders it correctly. Should we not be using SMIL - kind of looks half-baked in all the browsers (sadly)? Blast. Thanks

  Ok, I'm a C# ASP.NET dev following orders: The orders are to take a given dataset, shred the XML and return columns. I've argued that it's easier to do the shredding on the ASP.NET side where we already have access to things like deserializers, etc, and the entire complex of known types, but no, the boss says "shred it on the server, return a dataset, bind the dataset to the columns of the gridview" so for now, I'm doing what I was told. This is all to head off the folks who will come along and say "bad requirements". • Monotouch Binding to Linea Pro SDK

  I'm trying to create a binding to the Linea Pro (it's the barcode scanner they use in the Apple Stores, Lowes) SDK. I'm using David Sandor's bindings as a reference, but the SDK has been updated a few times since January of 2011. I have most everything working, except for the playSound call, which is used to, well, play a sound on the Linea Pro device. The .h file from the SDK has the call as follows: -(BOOL)playSound:(int)volume beepData:(int *)data length:(int)length error:(NSError **)error; I've tried using int[], NSArray, and an IntPtr to the int[], but nothing seems to work. The last unsuccessful iteration of my binding looks like: [Export ("playSound:beepData:length:")] void PlaySound (int volume, NSArray data, int length); Now, this doesn't work at all. Also note that I have no idea what to do with the error:(NSError **)error part, either. I am lacking some serious familiarity with C, so any help would be extremely appreciated.
