• asp.net Membership : Extending Role membership?

  Hi there, I am been taking a look at asp.net membership and it seems to provide everything that i need but i need some kind of custom Role functionality. Currently i can add user to a role, great. But i also need to be able to add Permissions to Roles.. i.e. Role: Editor Permissions: Can View Editor Menu, Can Write to Editors Table, Can Delete Entries in Editors Table. Currently it doesn't support this, The idea behind this is to create a admin option in my program to create a role and then assign permissions to a role to say "allow the user to view a certain part of the application", "allow the user to open a menu item" Any ideas how i would implement soemthing like this? I presume a custom ROLE provider but i was wondering if some kind of framework extension existed already without rolling my own? Or anybody knows a good tutorial of how to tackle this issue? I am quite happy with what asp.net SQL provider has created in terms of tables etc... but i think i need to extend this by adding another table called RolesPermissions and then I presume :-) adding some kind of enumeration into the table for each valid permission?? • Assigning specific menu administration rights for roles in drupal

  Hello folks. I'm trying to give one of my roles the administrative rights to add/remove content in a specific menu (but not all menus). I think I found a module that should enable something like this, http://drupalmodules.com/module/delegate-menu-administration I've followed the instructions, added the role to my user, checked the "administer some menus" value for that role and checked the "Make admin" field for that role and specific menu in Menus. I also gave the role permissions to change page and story content. However, it still wont let the user add any new content it creates in any menu, and I get an error message saying "warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/martin/www/drupal/modules/delegate_menu_admin/delegate_menu_admin.module on line 346." Line 346 looks like this: foreach ($form['menu']['parent']['#options'] as $key => $value) { I did a print_r($form); in the file just before it and there's no such array that I can see: [menu] => Array ( [#access] => 1 [delete] => Array ( [#access] => ) ) When I gave the role "administer menu" permissions, nothing extra was printed at all, leading me to the assumption that the delegate_menu_admin.module file is not used at all while both the "administer menu" and the "administer some menus" (from the delegate-menu-administration module) permissions are set! Is this some incompatibility between the module because of some drupal update? Or am I just too tired and too stupid? :)

• Drupal advanced ACLs for "untrusted" administrators

  I have a multi-site Drupal-6 installation containing websites of different customers. On each site, there is an "administrator" role that includes mainly the customer's account. We want to give as many permissions as possible to this privileged user, but this could bring to security leaks using just the Drupal Core permissions management system. The main thing to avoid is the customer account being able to run PHP code on the server (that would be like being logged on the server as the www-data user.. sounds really bad). To avoid that, it is not sufficient to deny PHP code evaluation for the role. Since the administrator role must have permissions to manage users, he could also change the password of the user #1 and login in the site as superadmin. The second goal would be to deny also some "confusing" administrative pages (such as module selection) but not others (such as site informations configuration, or theme selection, etc.) I found the User One module that seems to fix the first problem, but I have no idea on how to solve the second one. I found some modules around, but no-one seems to fit.. it seems like the most ACLs are thought to protect the content, and not the site itself, as if the site administrator would always be the server owner itself..

• Using IAM for user authentication

  I've read lots and lots of posts that touch on what I think should be a very common use case - but without finding exactly what I want, or a simple reason why it can't be done. I have some files on S3. I want to be able to grant certain users access to certain files, via a front end that I build. So far, I've made it work this way: I built the front end in Django, using it's built-in Users and Groups I have a model for Buckets, in which I mirror my S3 buckets. I have a m2m relationship from groups to buckets representing the S3 permissions. The user logs in and authenticates against Django's users. I grab from Django the list of buckets that the user is allowed to see I use boto to grab a list of links to files from those buckets and display to user. This works, but isn't ideal, and also just doesn't feel right. I've got to keep a mirror of the buckets, and I also have to maintain my own list of user/passwords and permissions, when AWS already has all that built in. What I really want is to simply create the users in IAM and use group permissions in IAM to control access to the S3 buckets. No duplication of data or function. My app would request a UN/PW from the user and use that to connect to IAM/S3 to pull the list of buckets and files, then display links to the user. Simple. How can I, or why can't I? Am I looking at this the wrong way? What's the "right" way to address this (I assume) very common use case?

So I need JQuery validation (or just plain JS), for this textbox on the page for the following case: If the textbox is enabled AND the user does not have the permission, allow the user to input the current date or future dates ONLY.

• Visual SourceSafe (VSS): "Access to file (filename) denied" error

  Hi, can anybody help with the above SourceSafe error? I've spent hours trying to find a fix. I've also Googled the heck out of it but couldn't find a scenario matching mine, because in my case only a few files (not all) are affected. Here's what I found: only a few files in my project generate this error other files in the same directory (for example, App_Code has one of the problem files) work fine I've tried checking out from both the VSS client and Visual Studio another developer can check out the main problem file without any problems This sounds like a permission issue for my user, right? However: I found the location of one of the problem files in VSS's data directory (using VSS's naming format, as in 'fddaaaaa.a') and checked its permissions; everything looks fine and its permissions match those of other files I can check out successfully I can see no differences in the file properties between working and non-working files What else can I check? Has anyone encountered this problem before and found a solution? Thanks. P.S.: SourceGear, svn or git are not options, unfortunately. P.P.S.: Tried unsuccessfully to add tag "sourcesafe." EDIT: Hey Paddy, I tried to click 'add comment' to respond to your comment, but I'm getting a javascript error when loading this page in IE8 ("jquery undefined," etc.) so this isn't working. This is when checking out files, and yes, I've obliterated my local copy more times than I can remember. ;) EDIT 2: Thanks for the responses, guys (again I can't 'add comment' due to jQuery not loading, maybe blocked as discussed in Meta). If the problem was caused by antivirus or a bad disk, would other users still be able to check out the file(s)? That's the case here, which makes me think it's a permission issue specific to my account. However I've looked at the permissions and they match both other users' settings and settings on other files which I can check out.

• How can I get git to work with a remote server?

  I am the CM person for a small company that just started using Git. We have two Git repositories currently hosted on a Windows box that is our all-purpose Windows server. But, we just set up a dedicated server for our CM software on an Ubuntu Linux server named "Callisto". So I created a test Git repository on Callisto. I gave its directory all of the proper permissions recursively. I had the sysadmin create a login for me on Callisto, and I created a key to use for logging in via SSH. I set up my key to use a passphrase; I don't know if that could be contributing to my problems? Anyway, I know my SSH login works because I tested it through puTTY. But, even after hours of trials and head scratching, I can't get my Windows Git bash (mSysGit) to talk to Callisto for the purposes of pushing or pulling Callisto's git repository files. I keep getting "Fatal error. The remote end hung up unexpectedly." And I've even gotten the error that Git doesn't recognize the test repository on Callisto as a git repository. I read online that the "Fatal error...hung up unexpectedly" is usually a problem with the server connection or permissions. So what am I missing or overlooking here? And why doesn't a pull using the git:// protocol work, since that only uses read-only access? Group and public permissions for the git repository's directory on Callisto are set to read and execute, but not write. If anyone could help, I would be so grateful. Thank you.

  Hi, I am embedding a manifest in a .NET exe so that it can request elevated permissions in Vista and Windows 7. The manifest that I am using is as follows: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> <assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0"> <assemblyIdentity version="1.0.0.0" name="ElevationTest" type="win32"/> <trustInfo xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v3"> <security> <requestedPrivileges> <requestedExecutionLevel level="requireAdministrator"/> </requestedPrivileges> </security> </trustInfo> </assembly> It works as expected in Vista and Windows 7 but crashes XP with the standard "... has encountered a problem and needs to close..." error. If I don't embed any manifest then it works as expected but will obviously not have the required permissions in Vista and Windows 7. What is a standard way of producing an exe that will function with the correct permissions in XP and Vista / Windows 7? Thanks, Alan

  I'm a Git newbie. I recently moved a Rails project from Subversion to Git. I followed the tutorial here: http://www.simplisticcomplexity.com/2008/03/05/cleanly-migrate-your-subversion-repository-to-a-git-repository/ I am also using unfuddle.com to store my code. I make changes on my Mac laptop on the train to/from work and then push them to unfuddle when I have a network connection using the following command: git push unfuddle master I use Capistrano for deployments and pull code from the unfuddle repository using the master branch. Lately I've noticed the following message when I run "git status" on my laptop: # On branch master # Your branch is ahead of 'origin/master' by 11 commits. # nothing to commit (working directory clean) And I'm confused as to why. I thought my laptop was the origin... but don't know if either the fact that I originally pulled from Subversion or push to Unfuddle is what's causing the message to show up. How can I: Find out where Git thinks 'origin/master' is? If it's somewhere else, how do I turn my laptop into the 'origin/master'? Get this message to go away. It makes me think Git is unhappy about something. My mac is running Git version 1.6.0.1. • Bazaar newbie question about repository structures

  I want to use Bazaar on Windows XP for web-development and related tasks. Most of the files are edited locally and then transferred via FTP to the server. Just now the repository sits on my local workstation. Later on it should be shared locally with some co-workers. Perhaps we will use a local Linux server as a centralized repository, but this structure is not decided for now. But first I need to understand the impacts of the different repository setups, which I do not at all. Using Bazaar-Explorer on Windows XP I’ve created a ‘shared tree repository’ from the option list of the init-dialogue in some location dev-filter/. Bazaar Explorer tells me: Created repository with treeless branches at F:/bzr.local/dev-filter Created branch at F:/bzr.local/dev-filter/trunk Created working tree at F:/bzr.local/dev-filter/work OK so far. Now I move a bunch of files into the work directory and add and commit them as Rev 1 ‘Start Revision’. Then I work on some of these files and commit them again as Rev 2. Here my confusion starts. Shouldn’t both revisions go into the trunk? The trunk is still empty, beside the .bzr directory which only holds some management information. If I delete my working directory, which I have tried during these first experiments, everything is gone. There’s obviously no hidden storage of those files. OK. Perhaps I need to push it into the trunk? This does not work either. Entering the work/ directory and initializing the ‘push’ to the trunk, Bazaar-Explorer tells me No new revisions to push. So what? This looks like a severe conceptual misunderstanding about what should happen on my side. Edit, 2010-02-03: Some conclusions What I learned meanwhile is this: I think I should switch to the command line until I really understand what’s going on, at least for creating the repositories and branches. Bazaar Explorer introduces a new level of abstraction which I only can handle if I understand the level beneath One of the secrets of working with Bazaar at least for me is to understand those .bzr directories, their particular properties and states when created with ‘bzr init’, ‘bzr init-repository’, ‘bzr branch’ etc. in all their variants and how they are plumped together. While there’s a whole chapter of ‘Organizing your workspace’ in the Bazaar User Guide, it’s more or less workflow oriented. The manual contains a lot of directory structures for the given examples. What I would prefer beside this and have not (or only rudimentary) found so far is some graphical representation of those ‘Lego like’ .bzr building blocks which create the linking of all the parts. • Building the WAR with m2eclipse in combination with WTP (handling webResources)

  I have a situation where I have a web application that is built using maven (i.e., maven-war-plugin). For each code modification, we have had to manually launch maven and restart the application server. Now, to reduce build cycle overhead, I want to use WTP to publish the webapp. Now, we have resource processing with Maven, and there are some additional Maven tasks defined in our POM when building the webapp. Therefore m2eclipse seems like a natural solution. I have gotten far enough that the Maven builder is running these tasks and filtering resources correctly. However, when I choose "Run on Server", the WAR file does not look like it would if I built it in Maven. I am guessing that this is because WTP actually builds the WAR, and not the m2eclipse builder. So even though we have configured the maven-war-plugin in our POM, those settings are not used. Below is a snippet with our maven-war-plugin configuration. • Django FileField not saving to upload_to location

  I have an Attachment model that has a FileField in a Django 1.4.1 app. This FileField has a callable upload_to parameter which, per the Django docs should be called when the form (and therefore the model) is saved. When I run FormTest below, the upload_to callable is never called and the file therefore does not appear in the location provided by the upload_to method. What am I doing wrong? Notice that in the passing tests in ModelTest (also below), the upload_to method works as expected.   After I did brew update and brew upgrade, my postgres got some problem. I tried to uninstall postgres and install again, but it didn't work as well.   I use embedded servers that run inside Junit test cases. Sometimes these servers require a working directory (for example the Apache Directory server). The new @Rule in Junit 4.7 can handle these cases. The TemporaryFolder-Rule can create a temporary directory. A custom ExternalResource-Rule can be created for server. Thus the root-folder in TempraryFolder will be null, resulting that any files are created relative to the current working directory. If I reverse the order of the attributes in my class I get a compile error because I cannot reference a variable before it is defined. I'm using Junit 4.8.1 (because the ordering of rules was fixed a bit from the 4.7 release)

I use Maven 3.0.3. Anybody have any ideas?

• I need help converting a C# string from one character encoding to another?

  According to Spolsky I can't call myself a developer, so there is a lot of shame behind this question... Scenario: From a C# application, I would like to take a string value from a SQL db and use it as the name of a directory. I have a secure (SSL) FTP server on which I want to set the current directory using the string value from the DB. Problem: Everything is working fine until I hit a string value with a "special" character - I seem unable to encode the directory name correctly to satisfy the FTP server.   I am trying to use Web Deploy to deploy a site where the Site is rooted on a UNC path instead of a local drive. This is because I want to have a shared configuration, and have all servers point to the same UNC for content. That would allow me to deploy to one server and have all servers updated at the same time. I've created a share with everyone and users read/write. The NTFS permissions have the ID of the appDomain account as full control, and that is the same account that is configured as the specific user in Management Service Delegation. I can log on to the destination server as that ID, access the share and create/delete files. I want to be able to separate everything from OLDSITE and NEWSITE so they are not tied together but use them on the same linux computer. If I change the Virtualhost for the newsite.com to a wildcard, the proxypass will work but anything thats a subdomain of newsite.com won't work. so newsite.com will work, but www.newsite.com will not load correctly. I am assuming that when everything is wildcarded, then the ServerName somewhat acts like a RewriteCond and actually just applies the stuff to that URL. It uses the Virtualhost * (oldsite.com) and lets ANYTHING.oldsite.com work, but the second virtualhost * (newsite.com) only newsite.com will work... www.newsite.com will not. If I change the order of them, the opposite is true. So apparently it doesn't like me using 2 wildcards... I tried just making the Servername *.newsite.com .......but that would be too easy. I am not sure what I can do to do what I want? Perhaps I should make the ProxyPass included in the VirtualHosts and use something like: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^panel\.newsite\.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://panel.newsite.com:10000/ [P] ProxyPassReverse / http://panel.newsite.com:10000/ but that doesnt seem to want to login to webmin, it loads the login page but isnt working how the ProxyPass & ProxyPassReverse does.

• Choice and setup of version control

  I am about to set up an new laptop and in the process transition to a new version control system as part of a general cleanup. Currently I use a centralized version control system (yes it is VSS, and yes I know all the pro's and con's of that system, but as a single user system it works well for me). I have very little requirements for a new system and I am free to choose among any of the current mainstream players, but cost constraints will push me towards oss. Some of my requirements are: Runs on a single machine (ie the laptop in question) under windows I am not sharing things with other developers or workers - this is more for my own historical benefits. I want to version source code, documentation and binary files I have a large hierarchy of projects that are unrelated (see below) I have files within the hierarchy that don't need to be controlled (but could be) Some projects use Visual Studio, so some integration there could be nice. There could be some sharing of files between jobs. I generally only need a small about of branching in code files The directory hierarchy that I have at the moment is somewhat like: Root | |--Customer #1 | | | |--Job #1 | | | | | |--Data files received from Customer for Job (not controlled) | | |--Documentation files (controlled) | | |--Project information files (not controlled - but could be) | | |--Software Project Files (controlled) | | |--Scratch dir for job (not controlled) | | | |--Job #2 | | (same structure as above) | |--Customer #2 | |.. | |--Cusmtomer #n |.. Currently I have about 22 customers with differing numbers of projects underneath them. At the moment I have a single VSS repository based at the root of the directory structure. If I kept with a centralized system (ie SVN) I believe that I should keep the same approach and continue with a single repository based from the root dir. Is this a valid approach? However if I move to a distributed tool then I am unsure of how I should handle the situation. My initial guess is that I should not have a repository based on the root of my entire directory structure - but that is a guess so I really don't know how valid it is. Should I pitch a distributed approach at the Root, Customer, Job or sub-Job directory level? Also what I am not clear on with distributed tools (and perhaps with SVN as well), is if I can branch parts of a repository. For example, I can see branching source code in software projects as being useful, but branching my documentation as not being useful. So if I pitch a repository at the Job level, can I just branch the Software Project Files? Or would all files in that Job be branched? Every time I look at distributed tools I get a nagging feeling that they are not suited to my style of setup. I am uncomfortable with idea of having to manually set up something like 50 to 80 separate repositories (if I pitch at the Job level, or 20+ if at the Customer level) within my directory hierarchy. This feeling also extends to having all those repositories scattered around as well - however I do have a backup strategy that I trust, so this latter feeling is pretty well unfounded. So what advice can you all give me? Thanks in advance!
