• what do you expect from flash in the near future?

  The recent article of steve jobs link made me think about the future of flash. I'm learning actionscript 3.0 in my studies but is it the right decision still to go for it? I was pretty sure that I will be able to build application in as3 for iphones/ipads in the near future. It seems to me, while I would stay with flash, the market will be polarized by apple and adobe and you will always work double for both clientele, or just lose half of them. Which decision would you take as a designer, if you were still at university and you intend to become a freelancer?

  I have a list of entries stating a production value in a given interval.   The Scala compiler compiles direct to Java byte code (or .NET CIL). Some of the features of Scala could be re-done in Java straightforwardly (e.g. simple for comprehensions, classes, translating anonymous/inner functionc etc). What are the features that cannot be translated that way? That is presumably mostly of academic interest. More usefully, perhaps, what are the key features or idioms of Scala that YOU use that cannot be easily represented in Java? Are there any the other way about? Things that can be done straightforwardly in Java that have no straightforward equivalent in Scala? Idioms in Java that don't translate?

• Clickonce application does not update or launch.

  I have a winforms application that I have deployed using clickonce, but the users navigate to a network drive and double click on setup.msi instead of using a webpage to install it. I have two users that have it installed and it's worked in the past. I did an udpate last week and now when the users try to launch the application the window that says "Verifying Application Requirements" pops up then when it disappears nothing happens. The dialog asking if it's ok to update never pops up. The network people have verified that they have permissions on the network drive (though, I would expect an error message if this were the issue). Any clues what could cause this to happen?

• Is there any way to retrieve a float from a varargs function's parameters?

  If the function was defined with a prototype which explicitly stated the types of the parameters, eg. void somefunc(int arg1, float arg2); but is implemented as void somefunc(int arg1, ...) { ... } is it possible to use va_arg to retrieve a float? It's normally prevented from doing this because varargs functions have implicit type promotions, like float to double, so trying to retrieve an unpromoted type is unsupported, even though the function is being called with the unpromoted type do to the more specific function prototype. The reason for this is to retrieve arguments of different types at runtime, as part of an obj-c interpreter, where one function will be reused for all different types of methods. This would be best as architecture independent (so that if nothing else the same code works on simulator and on device), although if there is no way to do this then device specific fixes will be accepted.

  This is what I have in my schema section of my WSDL to specify the field has to be comparison operators <xsd:simpleType> <xsd:restriction base="xsd:string"> <xsd:pattern value="&lt;|&gt;|&lt;=|&gt;=|="/> </xsd:restriction> </xsd:simpleType> SoapUI complains about this part of the WSDL, I tried to set the value to something with non special characters and the WSDL is valid. So I tried to replace that whole long string to be value=">gt;" and it valid but value="<lt;" is not valid, and value=">" is also not valid. My question is, why does the WSDL validation need > to be double escaped? The main question is, how to provide a valid less than side within the pattern value.

  Hi, This is probably a very simple question but I'm new to nHibernate and I'm having trouble working this out. I have a Page object, which can have many Region objects. I also have a Workflow object. Page and Region objects both have a relationship to Workflow and it's this double association that I'm having trouble with. The PageMap has HasMany(Function(x) x.Regions).Cascade.All() And the RegionMap has: References(Function(x) x.Page) And this all seems to work. But how do I define the relationship between Workflow and these two objects?

• How can chunks be allocated in a node.js stream in object mode all at once?

  I can see how buffers, and strings can be sent as chunks, but I'm having a problem thinking about how streams can be dealt when working in object mode. Say I have a byte stream from an http request message. I want to take that message, parse, and then transform it into one big object. I already know how to parse the message. What I'm wondering is if the message is big so it has many chunks, but I want to make one object for the output how can I make sure the data event waits for the whole thing? Is this just a matter of not using the push method until the chunked data has finished being sent? That would then restrict the stream data output to a smaller object which I think I'm fine with for now. As an added condition the larger data will be reduced in size after the the transform.

• How can I pass Arguments to a C++ program started by the Registry?

  Hello, I'm creating a Win32 program that will be executed every time the computer turns on. I manage to do this by adding the .exe path into the registry. The problem is; I want to make the program appear minimized in the system tray when the computer is turned on but if I double click it [after the computer turns on and the program is not currently running] the program should appear on its normal [maximized] size. Question, I was thinking on whether is was possible to pass an argument to the program when the program is executed from the registry. Is this possible? If yes/no, how would I manage to do this? (Using windows XP) Thanks.

• How to I get raw 'mouse' events with touch screens on Windows Vista/7?

  Does anyone have a clue how to completely disable the touch/tablet 'magic' introduced in Windows Vista? When I follow the steps on http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb969148(VS.85).aspx (both SetProp disable and WM_TABLET_QUERYSYSTEMGESTURESTATUS override) I succeed in stopping windows from treating press-and-hold as a right-click (it correctly gives me a WM_LBUTTONDOWN), but it also gives me a premature WM_LBUTTONUP (before I really let go of the screen). And there is also another problem: a click followed by a drag (down, up, down, move) is treated as a double-click (down, up, down, up, move). These issues occur with two very different touch screens (so it is not a hardware problem), and it never used to happen with Windows XP. This really bugs me. I would much rather have the raw input events like you have for normal mouse clicks. Any ideas?

  I have a 2D array called "results." Each "row" array in results contains both string and integer values. I'm using this script to sort the array by any "column" on an onclick event: function sort_array(results, column, direction) { var sorted_results = results.sort(value); function value(a,b) { a = a[column]; b = b[column]; return a == b ? 0 : (a < b ? -1*direction : 1*direction) } } This works fine for the columns with strings. But it treats the columns of integers like strings instead of numbers. For example, the values 15, 1000, 200, 97 would be sorted 1000, 15, 200, 97 if "ascending" or 97, 200, 15, 1000 "descending." I've double-checked the typeof the integer values, and the script knows they're numbers. How can I get it to treat them as such?

  Given integer values x and y, C and C++ returns as the quotient q = x/y the floor of the floating point valued equivalent. I'm interestd in a method of returning the ceiling instead? For example, ceil(10/5) = 2 and ceil(11/5) = 3. The obvious approach involves something like: q = x / y; if (q * y < x) ++q; This requires an extra comparison and multiplication; and other methods I've seen (used in fact) involve casting as a float or double. Is there a more direct method that avoids the additional multiplication (or a second division) and branch, and that also avoids casting as a floating point number?

As you may know, all data is written in a 4-byte manner in png files, both text and numbers. so if we have number 35234 it is save in this way: [1000][1001][1010][0010]. but sometimes numbers are shorter, so the first bytes are zero, and when I read the array and cast it from char* to integer I get wrong number. for example [0000] [0000] [0001] [1011] sometimes numbers are misinterpreted as negative numbers and simetimes as zero! let me give you an intuitive example: char s_num[4] = {120, 80, 40, 1}; int t_num = 0; t_num = int(s_num); => 3215279148 ?????? the result should be 241 but the output is 3215279148? I wish I could explain my problem well! how can i cast such arrays into a single integer value?

When it's used Get() then it assigns a variable from type bytes.Buffer which it will have the value to return.   Hello all, I have two problems which are related. 1) I have a batch file that contains this: net stop wampapache net start wampapache Which tries to stop and start my wamp server. When I double click the stop.bat file with the above it works successfully. When I try to run that from my PHP script, it stops the server but doesn't start it fully which I am guessing is because Apache is waiting for that PHP process to exit? function php_kill(){ exec('stop.bat', $output = array(), $return); return $return; } 2) Is there a way to restart my webserver (apache) whilst keeping session variables that PHP needs available? • ODBC - multiple connections from one app to the same data source

  I vaguely remember reading somewhere (in MSDN ODBC documentation?) that one application cannot make more than one connection to a single data source. It seemed to me that I need one connection that all the threads of the application will have to share. I was trying to look this information up, but I can't seem to find it anymore. Does anyone know/remember how this works? It all might become a problem in our app, since some of its threads will dynamically connect to data sources of their choice. I don't want to see random connection errors if two of them will connect at the same time to one source, so I wanted to double check this info.
