• Manually inserting varbinary data into SQL Server

  Hi, We have a SQL Server table for user settings. Originally the settings were domain objects which had been serialized as XML into the table but we recently begun serializing them as binary. However, as part of our deployment process we statically pre-populate the table with predefined settings for our users. Originally, this was as simple as copying the XML from a customized database and pasting it into an INSERT statement that was ran after the database was built. However, since we've moved to storing the settings as binary data we can't get this to work. How can we extract binary data from a varbinary column in SQL Server and paste it into a static INSERT script? We only want to use SQL for this, we don't want to use any utilities. • process taking high time on Itanium server

  Hi, we have an application which is recently migrated from PA-Risk server to itanium server. After migration we noticed that there is significant increase in time taken to complete a process. when we tracked the time taken by each part we found that the system time is 7.590000, user time is 3.990000 but elapsed time is 70.434882!! Due to this huge elapsed time, overall performance of the application has gone very low. i wrote a small progrms to perform I/O operations on Itanium. these scripts working faster on Itanium compared to PA-Risk. what could be the reason for this high elapsed time of this process?

• Query Results Not Expected

  I've been a CF developer for 15 years and I've never run into anything this strange or frustrating. I've pulled my hair out for hours, googled, abstracted, simplified, prayed and done it all in reverse. Can you help me? A cffunction takes one string argument and from that string I build an array of "phrases" to run a query with, attempting to match a location name in my database. For example, the string "the republic of boulder" would produce the array: ["the","republic","of","boulder","the republic","the republic of","the republic of boulder","republic of","republic of boulder","of boulder"]. Another cffunction uses the aforementioned cffunction and runs a cfquery. A query based on the previously given example would be... select locationid, locationname, locationaliasname from vwLocationsWithAlias where LocationName in ('the','the republic','the republic of','republic','republic of','republic of boulder','of','of boulder','boulder') or LocationAliasName in ('the','the republic','the republic of','republic','republic of','republic of boulder','of','of boulder','boulder') This returns 2 records... locationid - locationname - locationalias 99 - 'Boulder' - 'the republic' 68 - 'Boulder' - NULL This is good. Works fine and dandy. HOWEVER... if the string is changed to "the republic", resulting in the phrases array ["the","republic","the republic"] which is then used to produce the query... select locationid, locationname, locationaliasname from vwLocationsWithAlias where LocationName in ('the','the republic','republic') or LocationAliasName in ('the','the republic','republic') This returns 0 records. Say what?! OK, just to make sure I'm not involuntarily HIGH I run that very same query in my SQL console against the same database in the cf datasource. 1 RECORD! locationid - locationname - locationalias 99 - 'Boulder' - 'the republic' I can even hard-code that sql within the same cffunction and get that one result, but never from the dynamically generated SQL. I can get my location phrases from another cffunction of a different name that returns hard-coded array values and those work, but never if the array is dynamically built. I've tried removing cfqueryparams, triple-checking my datatypes, datasource setups, etc., etc., etc. NO DICE WTF!? Is this an obscure bug? Am I losing my mind? I've tried everything I can think of and others (including Ray Camden) can think of. ColdFusion 8 (with all the latest hotfixes) SQL Server 2005 (with all the greatest service packs) Windows 2003 Server (with all the latest updates, service packs and nightly MS voodoo)

  I am using SQL Server 2008 & 2005 (Express). I'm trying to extract part of an alpha numeric string from a varchar field. RIGHT(str_field,3) yields null values but substring(str_field, len(str_field)-2, len(str_field)) gives the right value. left(str_field,7) gives the expected values. What gives? I would have thought that RIGHT(str_field,3) and substring(str_field, len(str_field)-2, len(str_field)) are equivalent expressions.

  I want to install Clonezilla-Server(192.168.1.100) in a network that already have a DHCP Server (dd-wrt with dnsmasq - 192.168.1.1). I've installed Clonezilla-SE on ubuntu Server 10.10, once installed and configured Clonezilla Server i've removed the DHCP-Server and set pxe server address in dnsmasq configuration on DHCP Server : dhcp-boot=pxelinux.0,,192.168.1.100 When i try to start from PXE a Computer in the network clonezilla start, but give me an error that the ipddress of the machine is not given by the clonezilla server and can't continue ... Someone has already tried to configure Clonezilla-SE in a similar enviroment? Is there some configuration on DRBL server of Clonezilla that i need to do ?

  I want to store website page hierarchy in a table. What I would like to achieve is efficiently 1) resolve (last valid) item by path (e.g. "/blogs/programming/tags/asp.net,sql-server", "/blogs/programming/hello-world" ) 2) get ancestor items for breadcrump 3) edit an item without updating the whole tree of children, grand children etc. Because of the 3rd point I thought the table could be like ITEM id type slug title parentId 1 area blogs Blogs 2 blog programming Programming blog 1 3 tagsearch tags 2 4 post hello-world Hello World! 2 Could I use Sql Server's hierarchyid type somehow (especially point 1, "/blogs/programming/tags" is the last valid item)? Tree depth would usually be around 3-4. What would be the best way to achieve all this?

• How to register putty public key on windows server 2003?

  So we were trying to transfer files from unix server to a windows server 2003. I currently don't have any visibility on the unix server since it is being handled by another team. So in order for the 2 servers to establish connection, they sent us a public key which they said that we need to register on our windows server 2003 machine. can anyone help me? i cant seem to find anything about registering this public key generated by putty on a windows server 2003. there's no directory to put the public key(like in linux authorized_keys). Any help will be appreciated. thanks in advance. EDIT: we're trying to transfer file via pscp if this info is needed.

• NHibernate, the Parallel Framework, and SQL Server

  hey guys, we have a loop that: 1.Loops over several thousand xml files. Altogether we're parsing millions of "user" nodes. 2.In each iteration we parse a "user" xml, do custom deserialization 3.finally, in each iteration, we send our object to nhibernate for saving. We use: .SaveOrUpdateAndFlush(user); This is a lengthy process, and we thought it would be a perfect candidate for testing out the .NET 4.0 Parallel libraries. So we wrapped the loop in a: Parallel.ForEach(); After doing this, we start getting "random" Timeout Exceptions from SQL Server, and finally, after leaving it running all night, OutOfMemory unhandled exceptions. I haven't done deep debugging on this yet, but what do you guys think. Is this simply a limitation of SQL Server, or could it be our NHibernate setup, or what? cheers andy

• Impersonation in asp.net, confused about implmentation when used with Active Directory & Sql Server

  I have an internal website that is using integrated windows authentication and this website uses sql server & active directory queries via the System.Directory.Services namespace. To use the System.Directory.Services namespace in ASP.NET I have to run IIS under an account that has the correct privileges and importantly have impersonation set to true in the web config. If this is done then when I make a query against AD then the credentials of the wroker process (IIS) are used instead of the ASPNET account and therefore the queries will now succeed. Now if I am also using Sql Server with a connection string configured for integrated security ('Integrated Security=SSPI') then this interprets the ASP.NET impersonation to mean that I want to access the database as the windows credentials of the request no the worker process. I hope I'm wrong and that I've got the config wrong, but I don't think I have and this seems not to be inconsistent? It should be noted I'm using IIS 5.1 for development and obivously this doesn't have the concept of app-pools which I believe would resolve the problem.

  Hi, Im using ApnsPHP for push notifications on my server, but it's a little bit slow when you have to send a lot of notifications, so i decided to Run it in the server mode. I just want it to run in cron every 1 hour, check if there are some notifications to be sent, and if yes, run it in 5 processes to be faster. I'm sending updates to my users once a day depending on the timezone they set. So i have to run it every hour, and send messages to timezones that actually have 12:00 PM. Is there any way to do this? I know there is a demonstration but i just have no clue about how to do it. A simple sample will really help. Thank you millions!!

  Hi, I would like to get the details of all indexes, keys, and foreign keys from a database in SQL Server (2008). How do I do this? I plan to use this to synchronize those properties across a couple of somewhat similar databases. I can use SQL Server Management Studio, but I cannot do a full backup of a database because of restrictions set by the web hoster. -- Secondary question that you do not need to answer: Why can't there be something similar to the database schema in Mysql that simply lists all of the database structure in text SQL script format?   How does SQL Server determine whether a table column has low cardinality? The reason I ask is because query optimizer would most probably not use an index on a gender column (values 'm' and 'f'). However how would it determine the cardinality of the gender column to come to that decision? On top of this, if in the unlikely event that I had a million entries in my table and only one entry in the gender column was 'm', would SQL server be able to determine this and use the index to retrieve that single row? Or would it just know there are only 2 distinct values in the column and not use the index? I appreciate the above discusses some poor db design, but I'm just trying to understand how query optimizer comes to its decisions. Many thanks.

  When I run this SQL statement: CREATE UNIQUE INDEX WordsIndex ON Words (Word ASC); I get the following exception message: The CREATE UNIQUE INDEX statement terminated because a duplicate key was found for the object name 'dbo.Words' and the index name 'WordsIndex'. The duplicate key value is (ass). The statement has been terminated. The 'Word' column has a datatype of nvarchar(100). There are two items in the 'Word' column that SQL Server interprets as the same: 'aß' and 'ass', which causes the indexing failure. Why would SQL Server interpret those two different words as the same word?

The specs of the CentOS 5.7 VPS are 2GB DDR3 ECC RAM(4GB burst), 1 core 1.5Ghz(3Ghz burst) and 100GB RAID 10 storage, unmetered bandwidth @ 100Mpbs all for a whopping $25/month(unbeatable, yeah i know :) Anyways i have followed this LEMP(will also need MySQL and PHP) stack guide on linode http://library.linode.com/lemp-guides/centos-5 but basically what i want is to be able to host multiple website on this webserver after everything is setup. I am used to using DirectAdmin control panel on other server and want to have things setup so i can host multiple websites...mostly wordpress and drupal themes. Lets say 10 websites on this nginx web server. So can someone please help me on what i need to do to take "full" advantage of nginx power and performance, while been able to easily manage these multiple websites (wordpress and drupal themes)?   I have FK and PK all over my db and table data needs to be specified in a certain order or else I get FK/PK insertion errors. I'm tired of executing the wizard again and again to transfer data one table at a time. In the SQL Server export data wizard there is an option to "Write a query to specify the data to transfer". I'd like to write the query myself and specify the correct order. Will this solve my problem? How do I do this? Can you provide a sample query (or link to one) The databases are on two different servers - SQL Server 2008 on each ; The database names & permissions are the same ; each table name & col is the same ; I need Identity Insert for each table.

  I'd like to determine if my web app is read-heavy, write-heavy, or somewhere in between. I could take a guess, but I want proof. Is there a query I could run in Sql Server 2005 that would tell me the overall read/write ratio? Are there any caveats I should be aware of? Perhaps it can be found in a DMV query, or the Performance Dashboard, or examining a Sql Profiler trace. I'm not sure exactly how.

• Multiple Connection Types for one Designer Generated TableAdapter

  I have a Windows Forms application with a DataSet (.xsd) that is currently set to connect to a Sql Ce database. Compact Edition is being used so the users can use this application in the field without an internet connection, and then sync their data at day's end. I have been given a new project to create a supplemental web interface for displaying some of the same reports as the Windows Forms application so certain users can obtain reports without installing the Windows app. What I've done so far is create a new Web Project and added it to my current Solution. I have split both the reports (.rdlc) and DataSets out of the Windows Forms project into their own projects so they can be accessed by both the Windows and Web applications. So far, this is working fine. Here's my dilemma: As I said before, the DataSets are currently set up to connect to a local Sql Ce database file. This is correct for the Windows app, but for the Web application I would like to use these same TableAdapters and queries to connect to the Sql Server 2005 database. I have found that the designer generated, strongly-typed TableAdapter classes have a ConnectionModifier property that allows you to make the TableAdapter's Connection public. This exposes the Connection property and allows me to set it, however it is strongly-typed as a SqlCeConnection, whereas I would like to set it to a SqlConnection for my Web project. I'm assuming the DataSet Designer strongly-types the Connection, Command, and DataAdapter objects based on the Provider of the ConnectionString as indicated in the app.config file. Is there any way I can use some generic provider so that the DataSet Designer will use object types that can connect to both a Sql Ce database file AND the actual Sql Server 2005 database? I know that SqlCeConnection and SqlConnection both inherit from DbConnection, which implements IDbConnection. Relatively, the same goes for SqlCeCommand/SqlCommand:DbCommand:IDbCommand. It would be nice if I could just figure out a way for the designer to use the Interface types rather than the strong types, but I'm hesitant that that is possible. I hope my problem and question are clear. Any help is much appreciated. Let me know if there's anything I can clarify.

  Curious. I'm starting to broadcast high school football games online, and it uses a program to broadcast the feeds off my computer. However, when I shut the program down or the computer down, the server goes offline and guests won't be able to access the feeds. Is there any kind of code out there that I can post onto my website that will indicate to my guests whether the server is on or off? I would figure it would be a simple code, a php script or something that periodically checks to see if a site is on line and then displays ON or OFF.

  I need to check If a column value (string) in SQL server table starts with a small letter and can only contain '_', '-', numbers and alphabets. I know I can use a SQL server CLR function for that. However, I am trying to implement that validation using a scalar UDF and could make very little here...I can use 'NOT LIKE', but I am not sure how to make sure I validate the string irrespective of the order of characters or in other words write a pattern in SQL for this. Am I better off using a SQL CLR function? Any help will be appreciated.. Thanks in advance
