• How to I get the fingerprint reader to work on a HP ProBook 4530?

  My laptop (HP ProBook 4530) has a fingerprint device but ubuntu 12.04 didn't configure it automatically. In an effort to get it to work I installed Fingerprint-GUI. It tells me "no device detected". I checked that it is enabled in the BIOS settings. I already tried the following. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fingerprint/fingerprint-gui sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install libbsapi policykit-1-fingerprint-gui fingerprint-gui and sudo apt-get install fprint-demo libfprint-dev libfprint0 libpam-fprint aes2501-wy I tried adding Additional drivers

• PHP developer wanting to learn python

  I'm pretty familiar at this point with PHP (Javascript, too), up to the point of OOP in PHP, and am looking to branch out my knowledge. I'm looking at Python next, but a lot of it is a bit alien to me as a PHP developer. I'm less concerned about learning the language itself. I'm positive there's plenty of good resources, documentation and libraries to help me get the code down. I'm less sure about the technical aspects of how to set up a dev environment, unit testing and other more mundane details that are very important, aid in rapid development, but aren't as widely covered. Are there any good resources out there for this?

• What are the warning signs of impending doom to watch out for on a project?

  Having worked on a failed project is one of the few things that most programmers have in common, regardless of language used, industry or experience. These projects can be great learning experiences, soul-crushing disasters (or both!), and can occur for a multitude of reasons: upper management change of heart under-skilled / under-resourced team emergence of superior competitor during dev cycle over/under management Once you've worked on a couple of such projects, is it possible to recognise at an early stage exactly when a project is doomed to fail? For me, a big sign is having a hard & fast external deadline combined with feature creep. I've seen projects which were well planned out and proceeding right on schedule go horribly off the rails once the late feature requests started to roll in and get added to the final "deliverable". The proposers of these requests earned the nickname of Columbo, due to rarely leaving the room without asking for "just one more thing". What are the warning signs you look out for that set off the alarm bells of impending doom in your head?

• bash profile works for user but not sudo

  I've modified my .profile to include a folder if a flash drive is plugged in. When running the command as the user it works fine but tells me the scrip must be run by sudo (this is what i want). However, when i try to run it with sudo i get "command not found" I have a symlink (flash) in my /var/www folder pointing to my /media/flash drive. (nevermind this setup since is just for dev) this is my user's .profile : # set PATH so it includes flash scripts if [ -d "/var/www/flash/scripts" ] ; then PATH="/var/www/flash/scripts:$PATH" fi when trying to run as sudo i get: sudo: script: command not found any ideas?

• Changing permissions on serial port

  I'm using the Arduino IDE in Ubuntu, and am having issues with the serial port. It has worked in the past, but for reasons that may be unnecesary, I felt the need to change the ownership of some of the files from root ownership to my users ownership. This made the IDE work correctly, but I lost the ability to use the correct serial port. In the dev folder, the port I need is listed as permission 166. Someone (who is no longer in the area to help me) swapped the permissions to 666, which made it all work gloriously. However, it reverted back as soon as I restarted my computer, and if I now try to use the command: sudo chmod 666 ttyACM0 nothing happens. No error messages, but no permission change either. How can I change it, and how can I get it to change permanently. I apologize if this question is overly simplistic or unclear, I'm an ubuntu noob, and I wouldn't begrudge feedback!

• Installation-Allocate drive space/Boot Loader

  When I try to install Ubuntu 10.10 from the official livedisc I got in the mail, when I get to the "Allocate Disk Space" step I cannot get it to work. I shrank my win7 partition so I have unallocated space, then I tried using the space while it is formatted in NTFS, but the partitions will not show up in the box. /dev/sda is selected under boot loader, and I can't select anything else, but the partition box is blank so when I click "install ubuntu" it just says: "No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu." -I am trying to dual-boot win7 and ubuntu, but I was never asked in the install process whether I would like to install just ubuntu or dual-boot?

  The files can be accessed from every artifact, such as .bpel, .mplan, .task, .xsl, .wsdl etc., of the composite. 'oramds' protocol is used to access these files. You need to setup your adf-config.xml file in your dev environment or Jdeveloper to access these files from MDS. Here is the sample adf-config.xml. xmlns:sec="http://xmlns.oracle.com/adf/security/config" name="jdbc-url"/ name="metadata-path"/ credentialStoreLocation="../../src/META-INF/jps-config.xml"/ This adf-config.xml is located in directory named .adf/META-INF, which is in the application home of your project. Application home is the directory where .jws file of you application exists. Other than setting this file, you need not make any other changes in your project or composite to access MDS. After setting this up, you can create a new SOA-MDS connection in your Jdev. This enables you to have a resource pallet in which you can browse and choose the required file from MDS.

• Environment naming standards in software development?

  My project is currently suffering from environment naming issues. Different people have different assumptions as to what environments should be named or what the names designate, and it's causing confusion when discussing them. I've done a bit of research and I haven't found any standards out there. The terms include "Local", "Sand", "Dev", "Test", "User", "QA", "Staging" and "Prod" (plus a few more that different people have asked about) I'm not looking for just opinions, though if there's one out there that "everyone" has I'll take it - I'm trying to find definitions advanced by some sort of authority, even if it's unofficial. Here's the environments we currently use: Environment on the developer's PC Shared Environment where developers directly upload code to self-test Shared Environment where standards and functionality are tested by QA people Shared Environment where completed and QA-checked code is approved by project requesters Environment that mirrors the final environment as a final check and to prepare for deployment Final Environment where code is in use I know what I'd call them, but is there some sort of standard on this? • How to check command line requests routed thru TOR?

  I think I have virtualbox set up so that all traffic originating from the guest OS is routed through TOR. TOR is only installed on the host OS and the web browsers on the guest OS all report TOR IP's in Europe when I test with seemyip.com. The host OS shows my real IP when going to the same sites. But I initiate a lot of requests from the Linux command line and I haven't been able to confirm to my satisfaction that these are routing through TOR, though I have no reason to think they do not. When I use this command I get no output from the guest OS, but my real IP from the host OS: dig myip.opendns.com @resolver1.opendns.com +short This bash file gives no output from either OS: #!/bin/bash echo Your external IP Address is: wget http://Www.whatismyip.com -O - -o /dev/null | grep '<TITLE>' | sed -r 's/<TITLE>WhatIsMyIP\.com \- //g' | sed -r 's/<\/TITLE>//g' exit 0 Suggestions?

• Lucid hangs at booting after kernel upgrade

  This weekend, one of our servers running Lucid has installed some upgrades: libgcrypt11 1.4.4-5ubuntu2.1 linux-firmware 1.34.14 linux-image-2.6.32-41-generic 2.6.32-41.91 linux-libc-dev 2.6.32-41.91 Afterwards, it rebooted since this was a kernel upgrade. Now, it hangs at booting, after /scripts/init-bottom. init-bottom itself should not be the problem, the last line I can see is "done". So the problem has to be shortly after that. http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/hardy/man8/initramfs-tools.8.html tells me, that the next step is procfs and sysfs are moved to the real rootfs and execution is turned over to the init binary which should now be found in the mounted rootfs.   I know this question has been asked before, but following those answers does not seem to work for me. I have created an image of a USB stick this is on my laptop harddrive. How do I mount this image? The command I used to create the image was: ddrescue --no-split /dev/sdb usb_recovered usb_recovery_log What am I supposed to do next? Mount it? Fix it then mount it? Mount it then fix it? And how? UPDATE: What I want to recover are the files in the image. How? I don't know as I have tried testdisk and it can't find partitions, and I have tried fdisk and it can't find a partition table in the image either.

  It's the time of year when a lot of NetBeans Platform tutorials are being reviewed, revised, and rewritten. Today I'm looking at the NetBeans Platform Paint Application Tutorial. Suddenly I remembered seeing something in a recent API Changes document about a new class, ColorComboBox. That means I can make the tutorial a lot simpler, since Tim Boudreau's external ColorChooser.jar is now superfluous. Here's what the ColorComboBox looks like: It works perfectly. Of course, the nice thing about using that JAR was that it showed the user how to incorporate external JARs, but I'll make sure to make a note of that in the tutorial, along the lines of "If you don't like the NetBeans Platform color combobox, and would like to replace it with your own, such as Tim's ColorChooser.jar or a JavaFX color chooser, take the following steps." In short, if you're using NetBeans APIs, write this on your ceiling above your bed: http://bits.netbeans.org/dev/javadoc/apichanges.html, check that page regularly (mark it in your calendar to do first thing every Monday morning) and you'll be aware of the latest changes as they happen.

• Checking for cross-site scripting vulnerabilities in Perl web applications

  I'm putting together some notes for a dev team on how to write secure Perl code - especially taking into account the current OWASP top 10 web application vulnerabilities. For cross-site scripting I've included information on ensuring that all output to the browser is checked and escaped where necessary, but I'm looking for more automated mechanisms that would mean a developer doesn't have to think about every output statement and, potentially, miss one. Perl's 'taint' function sounds like it should be a help because it distrusts all user input, but it doesn't complain on tainted data being output to the browser. Apart from checking all output statements individually (probably by calling a generic sanitizing function) does anyone have any ideas on how Perl can help with this with existing libraries or techniques?

• Live boot from hard disk problem

  I've installed Ubuntu Desktop 13.04 32bit. Next I configured /etc/grub.d/40_custom to boot live system from ubuntu.iso (also Desktop 13.04 32 bit) I used configuration: menuentry "Ubuntu 13.04 Desktop" { loopback loop /boot/ubuntu.iso linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz.efi boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/boot/ubuntu.iso noeject noprompt splash -- initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz } and it works OK. Later I made some changes on my installed ubuntu. I made some configuration, installed additional packages and so on. After that I made backup using remastersys tool. Remastersys gave me new ISO file. So I wanted to use it. And here was first problem. Remastersys creates only initrd.gz file. So I changed the grub configuration form: initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz to: initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.gz But after that, when I reboot my system I get error: /init: line 3: can't open /dev/sr0: No medium found Any ideas how to fix it?   I'm trying to setup Spring dev environment (jenkins, tomcat) on Vagrant. What I really want to achieve is to limit config to only Puppet scripts, so I can share it with my colleagues and work together on the same environment. So far I managed to set up simple scripts to install jenkins, tomcat and so on, they work fine. What about jenkins configuration though? I'm pretty green in jenkins usage and configuration, not sure if I'm doing it the right way... I found this article and I want to migrate whole setup described in it to Puppet. Any ideas? Thanks.

• Tales of a corrupt SQL log

  Warning: Im a simple dev, not an all powerful DBA with godly powers. This morning, one of my sites was down and DNN reported a problem with the database.  A quick series of tests revealed that the culprit was a corrupted log file. Easy fix I said, I have daily backups so its just a mater of restoring a good copy of the database and log files.  Well, I found out thats not exactly true.  You see, for this database, I have daily file backups and these are not database backups created...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?   I am trying to login into this page but I cannot for the life of me get it to work. I have to login to this site when i connect to my school's wifi in order to start a session. So far ive tried to use bash and cUrl to achieve this but have only achieved to give myself a headache. will cUrl work or am I on the wrong track? Any help is greatly appreciated! • Agile bug fixing - what's the preferred process for testing?

  When a bug is fixed, the dev set its status to "resolved" and the bug is reassigned back to the person that created it. In our case this is usually the product owner - we don't have dedicated testers. But what's a good process for controlling how/when the PO tests the software? Should he be given the latest build after each bug is resolved/checked-in? Or what about every morning? Or should he only receive a build at (or close to) the end of the iteration, to include all of that iteration's new functionality and bug fixes? We are using TFS by the way.

I have run these commands: sudo umount /media/Tal sudo mount -t ntfs-3g -o uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=0000 /dev/sdb1 /media/Tal rdesktop -0 -r sound:local -f -u administrator -r clipboard:PRIMARYCLIPBOARD -r disk:tal=/media/Tal myip Tal is external hard drive connecting at USB in ntfs file system. I connect to windows 7 I see the hard drive in computer and I can access to files and create new files and folders, But when I try to copy a new file to a folder he show me an error message: You need permission perform this action Your require permission from computer's administrator to make changes to this folder Tal on my computername Disk from Remote Desktop Connection. I try chmod and chown too but I read I linux forum when it ntfs is no use. Some one can help me with my problem?
