• Configuring Network without Default Gateway

  I'm trying to connect my desktop and laptop using an ethernet connection. I usually configure network from the command line but this time I decided to give Network Manager a try, so I went to Network Connections, and selected manual IP configuration. At first I left the default gateway field blank, since I don't need a default gateway. Turned out network manager doesn't let me save the connection unless I enter that field, but entering a phony gateway messes up with my Internet connection. Anyway to do this setup?

• Proxy authentication box not showing (sometimes)

  I'm behind a proxy that require authentication by means of user/pass. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, I think the proxy is "Squid". Usually everything works fine, that means that the browser shows me the window to insert proxy user/pass and I can navigate. The problem: Sometimes the browser refuse to show the authentication windows and if I wait enough it gives me an error like: Errore 130 (net::ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED) Even if I restart, disconnect, the situation doesn't change. BUT on Windows the network (and the proxy) works.. So, bottomline what I know is: the network is working (though only on Windows) the Ubuntu configuration is ok (because i can navigate most days) The problems resolves itself in a few hours but I don't understand why. • New Dash features and Online accounts missing after 12.04 to 12.10 upgrade

  I performed upgrade to 12.10 from 12.04 using update-manager. Unfortunately, there was some error, because when I came back from the coffee, the screen was black. I opened a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and killall dpkg, which seemed to be waiting for user input for configuration file update (xdg package , if I remember well). After that, I did a do-release-upgrade, which seemed to work well, because I ended on a graphic session after reboot. The problem is that some 12.10 features are missing, as Online Accounts and Dash new online results. This made me suspicious of missing packages or something like that. Please take a look at upgrade logs and my new dpkg --get-selections output: https://gist.github.com/3919006 dpkg --reconfigure -a didn't solved the problem nor apt-get -f install showed any problem. do-release-upgrade say my system need no news packages (even if I change /etc/lsb-release to 12.04) If someone give me a dpkg --get-selections of a vanilla 12.10 installation, may be I can force system reconfiguration.

  An interrupted installation of updates resulted in ubuntuone-control-panel-qt breaking and now I cannot install or update anything. • choppy streaming audio

  I could use some help troubleshooting choppy streaming audio. The problem is jerky playback regardless of audio or video with audio. Both Chromium and Firefox have the problem, however files played directly on the machine with Rhythmbox sound just fine. I'm running 12.04 LTS on a C2D T9300. • GlassFish 4.0 Virtualization Progress - VirtualBox

  Wouldn't it be nice if you could spawn GlassFish instances as VirtualBox virtual machines? Well now with early versions of GlassFish 4.0 you can! This page on the GlassFish Wiki documents the steps to get this to work. It walks you through the various VirtualBox (network and services) and GlassFish configuration steps including the creation of VDI templates (typically JeOS images) to finally create a virtual machine on the fly, as part of the typical GlassFish deployment process. The more general virtualization support in GlassFish is discussed in this other Wiki page. Earlier demonstrations of GlassFish.next prototypes or early milestone builds showed support for KVM, "laptop mode" and OVM as well as community involvement from Serli, speaking of which this slide-deck is a good summary of what we're trying to achieve in the GlassFish 4.0 IMS (IaaS Management Service).

• Broadcom bcm4313 Ubuntu 13.10 connection time out

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10 I keep getting connection timed out every few seconds at which point i have to disconnect and reconnect to the WiFi network. • Can decoupling hurt maintainability in certain situations?

  Can the fact that the business logic is mapped to interfaces instead of implementations actually hinder the maintenance of the application in certain situations? A naive example with the Java's Hibernate framework would be, that for example (provided I don't have the whole code-base in my head, the project structure is a mess and classes are named with arbitrary names) if I wish to see what's going on in a certain DAO, to see if it actually is doing what it's supposed to do, then instead of traversing backwards up the tree from the point where the data service is invoked (where the tree will end in an interface with no implementation details whatsoever apart from the signature) I have to for example go and look for a configuration XML file to see which class is mapped to said interface as the implementation before being able to access the actual implementation details. Are there any situations where having loose coupling can actually hurt maintainability?

• Running the application with F5 gives a message saying "\bin\Debug\Infrastructure.Layout.dll was not found"

  The problem here is the ProfileCatalog.xml file refers to the old assesmbly namesdlls. It does not get updated when the assembly names change. Steps to fix this issue: 1. Open the ProfileCatalog.xml file in the Shell project, and you'll find there are three ModuleInfo configuration items that need to have the solution name prefixed. 2.   We have a few websites that we are running on one instance of IIS that need to be mapped for each of their domain names. For example. Site A has the domain name coolness.com Site B has the domain name 6to8Weeks.com Site C has the domain name PhatTech.com When I look at the "Web Site Identification" section of the IIS configuration window, I notice that I can specify an IP address and port, but if I click the Advanced button, I can also configure the site based on host header values as well. How do I configure each site in IIS? Ideally I would like them to all be able to listen to port 80, so I don't have weird URLs, but I'm not sure if I do this using headers, IP addresses, both, or something else.

• SSH Lost Terminal Colors

  I have to computers with exactly the same configuration (same PS1 etc...). When I ssh from A to B the terminal correctly displays PS1 and file type colors (i.e. blue directories, green executables etc.) But when I ssh from B to A PS1 is set to default and colors disappear. Furthermore, I created public keys to ssh without password from A to B and vice-versa. It works correctly from A to B but it doesn't work from B to A, again I repeated the exact same procedure on both pc: On Host A ssh-keygen ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub address.to.host.B On Host B ssh-keygen ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub address.to.host.A What could be the problem?

  I have an Apache webserver, and in the Apache configuration, I have Alias /backups "/backups" <Directory "/backups"> AllowOverride None Options Indexes Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> I can access files via http://127.0.0.1/backups. The problem is everyone can access that. I have a web interface, e.g. http://localhost/adminm that is protected with htaccess and password. Now I don't want separate .htaccess and .htpasswd for /backups, and I don't want a second password prompt when a user clicks on /backups in the web interface. Is there any way to use same .htaccess and .htpasswd for the backups directory?

  Imagine I have three Ubuntu computers home, laptop, beach-house. They all have the same version of Ubuntu, 10.04 installed, and are kept up to date from the repositories. I use f-spot, thunderbird, and google-chrome on all of the computers. Is there a way to keep the data and configuration in sync across them, without requiring constant connectivity for normal (non-synchronous) usage? For example, they should be usable without network connectivity, so something like NFS won't work. An ideal solution would not require manual action to start the syncing process.

• Gnome-classic, new windows remain buried behind other window

  This is my first question on this forum. I have recently moved from ARCH Linux to Ubuntu 11.10. I switched to using Gnome-Classic and noticed strange behaviors with the windows whenever I open them. I have setup Launchers on the Panel to launch Dolphin, Terminal and Chrome Browser. Whenever I launch any of these I notice that they open behind the current window that is in-focus instead of coming up in front. According to me any sane windows manager would by default bring up the new window in front and focus, I mean why would you want to open a window hidden behind all other window??? Is there any thing or configuration that I need to check as this problem is driving me nutts . Thanks in advance

• How can I use smbclient to connect to Windows shares by hostname when a firewall is enabled?

  I can't connect to file shares on Windows computers using smbclient -L //hostname when the firewall is enabled. This occurs whether I'm using ufw (which allows outgoing traffic and replies back in with the default configuration) or iptables (where I'm allowing outgoing traffic and replies back in with iptables -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT). However, smbclient -L //ip-address works whether the firewall is enabled or not. I also tested this against a Samba server running on Ubuntu and again smbclient -L //hostname does not work when the firewall is enabled, but smbclient -L //ip-address works whether the firewall is enabled or not. For reference, here are the iptables rules I used during testing: *filter :INPUT DROP [0:0] :FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0] -A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -p icmp -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -d 224.0.0.251/32 -p udp -m udp --dport 5353 -j ACCEPT COMMIT

• Independent sound device for headphones

  I have an Asus K52Jc and in sound configuration there is no independent sound device for the headphones, and so there's no way to have independent volume for speakers and headphones. Is there a way to have independent devices? • Boots to terminal

  I had a system running 10.04, I think. I upgraded it to 11.04, everything was fine. But then when I upgraded it further to 11.10, the system would only boot to a terminal, no desktop like before. I installed 12.04 on it instead, keeping /home which was on another partition... but it's still booting to terminal. I believe there may be some bad configuration files left over that are causing this. Looking at other similar issues, I looked for /etc/X11/xorg.conf but it doesn't exist. startx says it isn't installed. Installing nvidia-current didn't help (has GF 6600 GT video card). Alt+F7 shows a blank screen. I used the alternate installer, and didn't select any of the optional packages it prompts during installation. Should I have? How do I get it to boot to desktop like normal?

• Representing timezone list

  I have a web application that allows the user to choose the timezone from the list. The list is very long (pretty much all CLDR-supported timezones). So the question is - how should I represent it? How should it be sorted - alphabetically or by timezone offset? What information should each item contain - offset, location, long name (like Europe/Zurich) or short name (like CET)? Should I display information about DST or only current offset? Let's say I can't right now do something like fancy maps OS configuration dialogs display, so the list is the only option. However I want to make the list look nice. Any best practices how it's done?

• DHCP won't start / subnetting

  I recently changed the IP address on an Ubuntu 12.04 server I have in my lab, which is running isc-dhcp-server. After doing so and modifying the dhcpd.conf file, my dhcp service would not start. I basically used the same configuration, except I modified everything to use /25 scopes rather than /24. When I try to start / restart the service, I see the following: MY@ubuntuserver:~$ sudo service isc-dhcp-server restart stop: Unknown instance: isc-dhcp-server start/running, process 20918 It looks like it starts, but it isn't actually running and Webmin states that the DHCP service is not running. So my question is, does isc-dhcp-server support subnetting (CIDR) style scopes, or must they be class A / B / C scopes (doesn't seem likely)? I've double checked the interface reference (this is a VM with only one defined eth0 interface) and everything else I can thing of.
