• Codemetric optimized httpwebrequest in C#

  Hello, the problem is the httpwebrequest method in my c# program. visual studio gives it a metric of 60, thats pretty lame.. so how can i program it more efficient? • Bare-metal virtualisation for the desktop

  Hi, Does anyone have any knowledge about bare-metal virtualisation products? I'm interested in building a new desktop machine for home, I've been looking at the Intel Quad Core processors and I'd like to put 8GB of RAM in there, but, it got me thinking about making the most out of the available resources. I thought if I could get a good 64bit machine, put some bare-metal virtualisation on, then have a primary system, I'd also be able to bring up some extra virtualised systems as and when I needed. I know most of the bare metal systems are designed for the server market, but, is there anything out there that works well for a desktop. What are the caveats? I presume I won't be able to make the most out of any video cards I could buy, what about just getting a decent screen resolution, will this be a problem? I run a single 24" screen. What about DVD/CD writing, is this possible? I'd like to re-rip my CD collection, I was hoping the quad 64Bit goodness would help me out with the encoding. I currently use a Mac and couldn't go back to windows so that leaves Linux, I was thinking a primary OS of ubuntu. Does this make a difference? Thanks Andrew

  I have a bidding table, as follows: SellID INT FOREIGN KEY REFERENCES SellItem(SellID), CusID INT FOREIGN KEY REFERENCES Customer(CusID), Amount FLOAT NOT NULL, BidTime DATETIME DEFAULT getdate() Now in my website I need to show the user the current bids; only the highest bid but without repeating the same user. SELECT CusID, Max(Amount) FROM Bid WHERE SellID = 10 GROUP BY CusID ORDER BY Max(Amount) DESC This is the best I have achieved so far. This gives the CusID of each user with the maximum bid and it is ordered ascending. But I need to get the BidTime for each result as well. When I try to put the BidTime in to the query: SELECT CusID, Max(Amount), BidTime FROM Bid WHERE SellID = 10 GROUP BY CusID ORDER BY Max(Amount) DESC I am told that "Column 'Bid.BidTime' is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause." Thus I tried: SELECT CusID, Max(Amount), BidTime FROM Bid WHERE SellID = 10 GROUP BY CusID, BidTime ORDER BY Max(Amount) DESC But this returns all the rows. No distinction. Any suggestions on solving this issue?

  I have a android view with 2 buttons centered. I want to change the button sizes to be bigger when I run the app on a tablet because they look ridiculous small there since it is the same size as for the phones. How can I do this? • HTML & CSS Horizontal menu with items on left & right

  Hi all, I'm building an horizontal menu in html+css. The current result is fine, except I want to have some items on the left, and others on the right. I couldn't find usefull result on Google with such common keywords so I'm asking on SO. Here's my code so far: #menu { background-color: #383838; height: 65px; margin-bottom: 20px; } #menu ul li { float: left; } <div id="menu"> <ul> <li>Link 1</li> <li>Link 2</li> <li>Link 3</li> </ul> </div> I'd like to have Link 3 on the right, so the space between link 2 and 3 should be filled at maximum. I don't want a filler <li> tag, but instead apply a class to the last <li> on the left, or the first <li> on the right. Don't want to adjust the width as I've a :hover background color changing effet on the links. I suppose margin or padding should do the trick but I can't manage to find how. Any clue? It looks like entlib is always using the selectedSource as it configuration. I try to write a client with C++ and it work like a charm, I think my problem is in C# client.

• Controlling ASP.NET output cache memory usage

  I would like to use output caching with WCF Data Services and although there's nothing specifically built in to support caching, there is an OnStartProcessingRequest method that allows me to hook in and set the cacheability of the request using normal ASP.NET mechanisms. But I am worried about the worker process getting recycled due to excessive memory consumption if large responses are cached. Is there a way to specify an upper limit for the ASP.NET output cache so that if this limit is exceeded, items in the cache will be discarded? I've seen the caching configuration settings but I get the impression from the documentation that this is for explicit caching via the Cache object since there is a separate outputCacheSettings which has no memory-related attributes. • Is there a standard mapping between JSON and Protocol Buffers?

  From a comment on the announcement blog post: Regarding JSON: JSON is structured similarly to Protocol Buffers, but protocol buffer binary format is still smaller and faster to encode. JSON makes a great text encoding for protocol buffers, though -- it's trivial to write an encoder/decoder that converts arbitrary protocol messages to and from JSON, using protobuf reflection. This is a good way to communicate with AJAX apps, since making the user download a full protobuf decoder when they visit your page might be too much. It may be trivial to cook up a mapping, but is there a single "obvious" mapping between the two that any two separate dev teams would naturally settle on? If two products supported PB data and could interoperate because they shared the same .proto spec, I wonder if they would still be able to interoperate if they independently introduced a JSON reflection of the same spec. There might be some arbitrary decisions to be made, e.g. should enum values be represented by a string (to be human-readable a la typical JSON) or by their integer value? So is there an established mapping, and any open source implementations for generating JSON encoder/decoders from .proto specs?

  I am unable to load a GPX file in the DDMS eclipse plugin. When specifying a GPX file, no points are added to the emulator control list. I have tried adding KML files as well, generated in Google earth. Is there a way to get these files to work? Uh oh, just did a test.. turns out the other transforms were on UIImageViews. Apparently rotating a label in this xib is causing the crash. But in another file the transforms are working fine: newprofileentry.transform = CGAffineTransformMakeRotation(1.570796326794897); playerb0.transform = CGAffineTransformMakeRotation(1.570796326794897); playerb1.transform = CGAffineTransformMakeRotation(1.570796326794897); Tried substituting deg90 with the full float value, still the same crash. Tried cleaning cache, restarting IB and Xcode, cleaning all targets. Program has been running fine until I just added these labels. Tried deleting the label, readding and reconnecting the Outlet, too. Thanks for reading, hope someone has an idea about this. Cheers!

• Delphi 2009 dbExpress and Interbase: Unicode migration steps and risks?

  Currently, our database uses Win1252 as the only character encoding. We will have to support Unicode in the database tables soon, which means we have to perform this migration for four databases and around 80 Delphi applications which run in-house in a 24/7 environment. Are there recommendations for database migrations to UTF-8 (or UNICODE_FSS) for Delphi applications? Some questions listed below. Many thanks in advance for your answers! are there tools which help with the migration of the existing databases (sizes between 250 MB and 2 GB, no Blob fields), by dumping the data, recreating the database with UNICODE_FSS or UTF-8, and loading the data back? are there known problems with Delphi 2009, dbExpress and Interbase 7.5 related to Unicode character sets? would you recommend to upgrade the databases to Interbase 2009 first? (This upgrade is planned but does not have a high priority) can we simply migrate the database and Delphi will handle the Unicode character sets automatically, or will we have to change all character field types in every Datamodule (dfm and source code) too? which strategy would you recommend to work on the migration in parallel with the normal development and maintenance of the existing application? The application runs in-house so development and database administration is done internally. Update: one problem I found now is that there are two different persistent field types for Unicode and non Unicode character fields. For the existing database, dbExpress creates TStringField objects. For the Unicode database fields, dbExpress creates (or expects!) TWideStringField objects. This looks like a lot of work lies ahead. While we could try to avoid persistent fields (and add calculated fields at run time), Of course we would prefer a solution which does not require so many changes in existing units and DFM files.

• How do I fix my "Stream closed" error in spring-ws?

  I have working code using the spring-ws library to respond to soap requests. I moved this code to a different project (I'm merging projects) and now it is failing. I would like to figure out the reason for the failure. The symptom I get is this: when the HTTP request arrives, spring begins handling the call. Some googling for the error message suggests that the problem is that a PushbackInputStream which is apparently used for reading from the socket is read twice or perhaps has close() called and then is read afterward. It is happening inside of spring-ws, not my code, and since it worked fine before I moved the code to a new project it must have something to do with versions of spring, or something it uses like axis or xerces. But I can't find any differences in versions of these! Has anyone encountered this error before? Or do you have any suggestions of approaches I could take in troubleshooting this?

My cdr table has a field called duration, I need to divide that by 60 and multiply the result by a float number like 0.16. Is there a way to multiply this values using the template tags? If not, is there a good way to do it in my views?   So I have some xml file like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <root result="0" > <settings user="anonymous" > <s n="blabla1" > <v>true</v> </s> <s n="blabla2" > <v>false</v> </s> <s n="blabla3" > <v>true</v> </s> </settings> </root> I want to go through all the settings using the XML Simple. Here's what I have when I print the output with Data::Dumper: $VAR1 = { 'settings' => { 'user' => 'anonymous', 's' => [ { 'n' => 'blabla1', 'v' => 'true' }, { 'n' => 'blabla2', 'v' => 'false' }, { 'n' => 'blabla3', 'v' => 'true' } ] }, 'result' => '0' }; And here's my code $xml = new XML::Simple; $data = $xml->XMLin($file); foreach $s (keys %{ $data->{'settings'}->{'s'} }) { print "TEST: $s $data->{'settings'}->{'s'}->[$s]->{'n'} $data->{'settings'}->{'s'}->[$s]->{'v'}<br>\n"; } And it returns these 2 lines, without looping: TEST: n blabla1 true TEST: v blabla1 true I also tried to do something like this: foreach $s (keys %{ $data->{'settings'}->{'s'} }) { Without any success: Type of arg 1 to keys must be hash (not array dereference) How can I procede?   Hi, this is a pretty basic question but I'm not entirely clear how to do this. I am trying to use a third-party service that has web-based service. The service is called Postful. But I'm not clear what exactly to do? I've looked at ActiveResource (http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveResource/Base.html) and rest-client, but I'm still not clear exactly what steps, code, and files to create. • Firefox: Can I use a relative path in the BASE tag?

  I have a little web project where I have many pages and an index/ToC file. The toc file is at the root of my project in toc.html. The pages are spread over a couple of subdirectories and include the toc with an iframe. The project doesn't need a web server, so I can create the HTML in a directory and browse it in my browser. The problem is that I'm running into XSS issues when JavaScript from the toc.html wants to call a function in a page (violation of the same origin policy). So I added base tags in the header with a relative URL to the directory in which toc.html. This works for Konqueror but in Firefox, I have to use absolute paths or the toc won't even display :( Here is an example: <?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8' ?> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <base href="../" target="_top" /> <title>Project 1</title> </head> <body> <iframe class="toc" frameborder="0" src="toc.html"> </iframe> </body> </html> This is file is in a subdirectory page. Firefox won't even load it, saying that it can't find page/toc.html. Is there a workaround? I would really like to avoid absolute paths in my export to keep it the same everywhere (locally and when I upload it on the web server later).
