• Setting language/culture for reporting services report rendered through C#

  I have written a report renderer in C# that runs and attaches reports to an email. This is all working great, except the date format of the parameters are incorrect when listed in the report title. All the reports have their language set to =User!Language and the parameters are output using the FormatDateTime function to format according to the user's regional settings. I am basically using the rendering method described here on MSDN. This all works great when the reports are run through the browser. However, when I render the report from C# it uses en-US date format. The report server's regional settings are set appropriately to the correct region as are the regional settings of the computer the C# progam is running on.. What property do I need to set in my C# program for the report to be rendered using my appropriate language/culture?

• Failure retrieving contents of directory

  Currently I have a couple of websites. My problem is that if I login on 1 specific domain with any of my programs (using notepadd++, FileZilla and Netbeans) the program stops at the content listing. I had it correctly running, (I'm working on a project on this domain for more than a year now) and suddenly I broke it somehow. This only happens on 1 specific domain, all other domains (from other hosts) are working. My colleague (next to me with same ip address) is able to login on this domain. Notepadd++ says: Failure retrieving contents of directory Filezilla says: Failed to retrieve directory listing Netbean popups: Upload files on save failed. (Because I have the setting upload on save enabled.) What I tried: First I thought it's my firewall, I disabled firewall but no result. Also notice that all other domain are working. Maby a blacklist with my ip address? No my colleague has the same ip address. Could anyone help me on this? • Ternary operator in VB.NET

  We all know about Ternary operator in C#.NET. I am a big fan of ternary operator and I like to use it instead of using IF..Else. Those who don’t know about ternary operator please go through below link. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ty67wk28(v=vs.80).aspx Here you can see ternary operator returns one of the two values based on the condition. "True" : "False"; In the above example you can see how we produce same output with the ternary operator without using If..Else statement. Recently in one of the project I was working with VB.NET language and I was eager to know if there is a ternary operator equivalent there or not. After searching on internet I have found two ways to do it. IF operator which works for VB.NET 2008 and higher version and IIF operator which is there since VB 6.0. So let’s check same above example with both of this operators. So let’s create a console application which has following code. You can see that both IIF and If operator has three parameter first parameter is the condition which you need to check and then another parameter is true part of you need to put thing which you need as output when condition is ‘true’. Same way third parameter is for the false part where you need to put things which you need as output when condition as ‘false’. Now let’s run that application and following is the output as expected. • New HTML 5 input types in ASP.Net 4.5 Developer Preview

  Microsoft has released developer previews for Visual Studio 2011 and .Net framework 4.5. There are lots of new features available in the developer preview. One of the most interested things for web developers is the support introduced for new HTML 5 form controls. The following are the list of new controls available in HTML 5 email url number range Date pickers (date, month, week, time, datetime, datetime-local) search color Describing the functionality for these controls is not in the scope of this article. Let us evaluate these. I have created a project in Visual Studio 2011 developer preview, and created a page named “controls.aspx”. In the page I placed on Text box control from the toolbox Now select the control and go to the properties pane, look at the TextMode attribute. Now you can see more options are added here than prior versions of ASP.Net. I just selected Email as TextMode. I added one button to submit my page. From the source of the rendered page, I saw the below markup for my email textbox <input name="TextBox1" type="email" id="TextBox1" /> Try to enter an invalid email and you will see the browser will ask you to enter a valid one by default. When rendered in non-supported browsers, these fields are behaving just as normal text boxes. So make sure you are using validation controls with these fields. See the browser support compatability matrix with these controls with various browser vendors. ASP.Net 4.5 introduced the support for these new form controls. You can build interactive forms using the newly added controls, keeping in mind that you need to validate the data for non-supported browsers.

• TFS Auto Shelve - New Visual Studio 2010 / TFS 2010 Extension

  We've been working with the Visual Studio 2010 SDK and the TFS 2010 SDK a lot recently to create new Visual Studio Extensions. You can find these extensions in the Visual Studio Gallery. If you're a developer/programmer, you should check it out, they have some pretty cool tools out there. I'd be surprised if you told me you went there and couldn't find any tools that could help you. One of the new extensions Cory and I made is called TFS Auto Shelve. Check out the description and read about it below. • Packing a DBF

  I thought my days of dealing with DBFs as a "production data" source were over, but HA (no such luck). I recently had to retrieve, modify and replace some data that needed to be delivered in a DBF file. Everything was fine until I realized / remembered the DBF driver does not ACTUALLY delete records from the data source -- it only marks them for deletion.  You are responsible for handling the "chaff" either by using a utility to remove deleted records or by simply ignoring them.  If imported into Excel, the marked-deleted records are ignored, but the file size will reflect the extra content.  After several rounds of testing CRUD, the output DBF was huge. So, I went hunting for a method to "Pack" the records (removing deleted ones and resizing the DBF file) and eventually ran across the FOXPRO driver at ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vfoxpro/bb190233.aspx ).  Once installed, I changed the DSN in the code to the new one I created in the ODBC Administrator and ran some tests.  Using MSQuery, I simply tested the raw SQL command Pack {tablename} and it WORKED! One really neat thing is the PACK command is used like regular SQL instructions; "Pack {tablename}" is all that is needed. • Windows and SQL Azure Best Practices: Affinity Groups

  When you create a Windows Azure application, you’ll pick a subscription to put it under. This is a billing container - underneath that, you’ll deploy a Hosted Service. That holds the Web and Worker Roles that you’ll deploy for your applications. along side that, you use the Storage Account to create storage for the application. (In some cases, you might choose to use only storage or Roles - the info here applies anyway) As you are setting up your environment, you’re asked to pick a “region” where your application will run. If you choose a Region, you’ll be asked where to put the Roles. You’re given choices like Asia, North America and so on. This is where the hardware that physically runs your code lives. We have lots of fault domains, power considerations and so on to keep that set of datacenters running, but keep in mind that this is where the application lives. You also get this selection for Storage Accounts. When you make new storage, it’s a best practice to put it where your computing is. This makes the shortest path from the code to the data, and then back out to the user. One of the selections for the location is “Anywhere U.S.”. This selection might be interpreted to mean that we will bias towards keeping the data and the code together, but that may not be the case. There is a specific abstraction we created for just that purpose: Affinity Groups. An Affinity Group is simply a name you can use to tie together resources. You can do this in two places - when you’re creating the Hosted Service (shown above) and on it’s own tree item on the left, called “Affinity Groups”. When you select either of those actions, You’re presented with a dialog box that allows you to specify a name, and then the Region that  names ties the resources to. Now you can select that Affinity Group just as if it were a Region, and your code and data will stay together. That helps with keeping the performance high. • A frequently updated mixed bag blog OR several seldom updated niche sites?

  Background I am a member of the website HubPages where I have about a hundred articles (and I'm always writing more.) Anyway, HubPages revenue model is 40% ad-share for them and 60% ad share for users. While the userbase there is really friendly, the site is REALLY slow, buggy and there is a ton of content on HubPages that is copied from other sources. Upon flagging these articles it takes a ton of time for mods to remove it and it's just generally dragging down my stuff. Furthermore, HubPages was hit really hard by Google's Panda Update: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1B3GGLL_enUS426US426&tbm=nws&q=google+panda& Aside from the temporary problems I would deal with when removing content from HubPages and putting it on my own domain (duplicate content, etc) I have another problem. Which would be the best for my articles? I have tons of articles in a wide variety of niches and would like to do what would help them perform the best. I'm not a huge niche writer and have received wide criticism from the HubPages community for my articles not performing as well as they could because I don't use enough keywords within the text of my articles. I prefer to write more naturally in a way that would appeal to an audience instead of keyword stuff. Anyway, this is aside the point. My Question After removing my articles from HubPages, should I put them on one domain or spread them across multiple domains grouped sort of by topic. For example: a-bunch-of-articles.com OR travel-articles.com and financial-articles.com and knitting-articles.com (I know those domains aren't available, but it's just kind of an example.) Here are the pros and cons of each: a mixed bag site like a-bunch-of-articles.com may not perform as well because of its mixed-bag nature a mixed bag site would be updated far more frequently than several niche sites... some niche sites may be updated so infrequently that a year could pass before one sees a new article a mixed bag site would be like putting all my eggs is one basket, where having several niche sites would spread out my portfolio, so to speak. a mixed bag site would be cheaper, $14 (two year registration) to start out with and hosting and I'm good to go. a mixed bag site wouldn't allow me to easily target keywords, but then again isn't HubPages pretty much a mixed bag site?

• Using a WCF Message Inspector to extend AppFabric Monitoring

• SPSiteDataQuery Returns Only One List Type At A Time

  The SPSiteDataQuery class in SharePoint 2007 is very powerful, but it has a few limitations.  One of these limitations that I ran into this morning (and caused hours of frustration) is that you can only return results from one list type at a time.  For example, if you are trying to query items from an out of the box custom list (list type = 100) and document library (list type = 101) you will only get items from the custom list (SPSiteDataQuery defaults to list type = 100.)  In my situation I was attempting to query multiple lists (created from custom list templates 10001 and 10002) each with their own content types. Solution     Since I am only able to return results from one list type at a time, I was forced to run my query twice with each time setting the ServerTemplate (translates to ListTemplateId if you are defining custom list templates) before executing the query.  Below is a snippet of the code to accomplish this. The query worked alright, implying the query was alright. I tried to connect to different DBs but the issue persisted, meaning it was not a DB issue either. Finally, the root cause was found to be in the concerned VO; one of the bind variables (say Bind_TId) was marked "Required". De-selecting the Required check-box resolved the issue. In retrospect, the issue looks to be rather straight-forward. However, the error message is not very helpful, if not misleading. Besides, it's counter-intuitive to think that a bind variable which is not being used in a query can cause error while statement preparation. The other bind variable - Bind_TId - was being used in other view criteria, not the view criteria involved in the given query. Still, it was required.

• Wireless card power management

  I have noticed that when my computer in plugged in, the wireless strength increases. I'm assuming this is to do with power management. Is there a way to disable Wireless Power Management? I have found a few blog posts that show hacks to disable this but what is best practice here? Should there not be an option via the power menu that lets you toggle this?
