  Can't boot after I did a aptitude full-upgrade and let it update menu.lst (did a diff first and it looked good). • Relayout LVM Disk

  I have an Ubuntu 11.10 system with two 500GB disks. The partition tables look like this: /dev/sda1 primary 465.52GB /dev/sda2 extended 243.17MB -> /dev/sda5 logical 243.14MB /dev/sdb1 primary 465.76GB sda1 and sdb1 are in a single LVM physical volume group containing a single logical volume containing a single logical filesystem which is mounted as /. sda5 is mounted as /boot. The problem comes when I want to upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04, which requires at least 247MB free on /boot. So I need to reduce the size of sda1 so that I can increase the size of sda2 and sda5. How the heck do I do that? I can find how to shrink the logical volume group, but I'm not at all clear on how to clear out the end part of sda1 so that I can reduce the physical volume group. Does pvresize just deal with this automagically? Or is that wild wishful thinking? I guess the alternatives are to back everything up onto something or other and recreate the thing from scratch or find out whether GRUB2 supports using LVM for /boot.

• Hyper-v and sql server connections for web apps

  I have a physical machine running win8, and two VMs in hyper-v client: 1 web server, 1 sql server. The web server works fantastic. The sql is the one that is giving me the problem. I can connect to it with server explorer in visual studio or management studio just fine, and it's blazing fast. The problem happens when I use the same connection string I am using in visual studio server explorer in the web.config for an app. data source=VMSQL1;initial catalog=OtherShell;persist security info=True;user id=OtherShell;password=****;network library=dbmssocn;MultipleActiveResultSets=True;App=EntityFramework I made sure it was also using tcp-ip, but it doesn't connect with or without the network library part of the connection string. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) This is driving my batty for the last two days, any ideas? It fails from the web vm too, but works in management studio with the same connection string.

• How to get just value from database query in Excel?

  I'm creating a spreadsheet as a collection point of information from a number of MS Access databases. I will run a query on each database to get a count of records in a particular table. Each database has the same structure but different content as they are used in different situations. So the query returns a single value, rec_count. I've figured out how to create that query, save it and then use it as the data source. So far so good. The problem is that Excel treats the query results as a table. So instead of getting just the single value the query returns, I also get the field name. Thus the result takes up two cells instead of one. When linking in the data source, I only see Table, PivotTable Report and PivotChart as options for viewing the data. I don't want any of those. I just want the single value without any formatting, column headers, etc. Is there a way to do this is Excel 2007?

• Will a SQL Server client alias survive a sysprep?

  I want to sysprep a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 machine that has SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 installed (for reference, SQL Server 2008 R2 has a new sysprep feature that allows the instance to be sysprepped). On the server is a SQL Server client alias that points to the default SQL Server database engine instance. For reference, the alias is called Alias-SQLServer and has been configured in both 32-bit and 64-bit cliconfig versions (that is, both registry keys exist) The alias points to the local instance as the image will be used to create development VMs and the installation script for the application that is being developed will use the SQL Server client alias in order to generalize the installation scripts. I can't seem to find information about whether the sysprep tool will update the SQL Server client alias's registry keys with the server's new name once it's unsealed. My guess is that it is not; how is sysprep to know that the server name the alias points to will be different for each image? Right? Perhaps if the alias points to localhost instead of the server name this will work?

• Windows Share permissions

  I have a SQL/File server that I am replicating a File Share and SQL instance, using ArcServer RHA, to a Replica server. Everything seems to work as far as the replication of the SLQ instance and Share is concerned. When I fail over to the Replica server the DNS Host A record is modified to point to the Replica Server IP Address so if I do an NSLOOKUP on ServerA it then points to the IP Address of ServerB. Ans since the SQL instance is named the same I can still map my ODBC connections to ServerA and I can still make a SQL connection. When I try to do a \ServerA\Share I get an error that says I do not have permissions to the Share. I think this is because it uses keberose authentication and the Share is tied to the actual sever host name. I have tried puting in a CNAME and pointing it to ServerA and Disabling Strict Name Checking on ServerB as well as adding the CNAME to the OptionalNames in the registry but I am still getting the error when I have the ServerA powered off. Is there a way to reset the Authentication of the Share to use the DNS Cname?

• Network driver for Hyper-V restore from Windows Home Server

  I have backed up Windows Server 2008 running virtualized on Hyper-V to a Windows Home Server 2008 SP1 (I know I should have backed up the VHD instead). Now I need to restore the contents of the VM from WHS. I have created a restore CD ISO and used it to create a new VM. It all works as advertised up to the point where the restore process wants to load the network drivers (it only finds 4 disk drivers on the restore CD. but no network drivers). So I created a virtual floppy and copied the contents of 'Home Server Drivers for Restore onto it. But no luck! I have tried moving the 4 subdirectories into the root of the floppy, but that didn't work either. Finally, I started another instance of the WS 2008 to identify the network driver that the virtualized instance is using (%WINDOWS%\system32\drivers\netvsc60.sys) and copied that file onto the virtual floppy, without success. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get networking working on a Hyper-V instance running off the Windows Home Server Restore CD? UPDATE: As suggested by delenda, I have added a legacy network adapter to my VM, and indeed I now get a network driver listed! However, the WHS it still not found, even after entering the home server name manually. PHS

  Hi I got a Raspberry Pi at A.A.A.B in my local network and I have set up a DMZ on my router so that any incoming traffic that comes to my router gets redirected to my raspberry pi wich I can connect via NO-IP adress. The problem is that I want to set up portforwarding since i got several services running on my Pi like SSH, torrent webgui, webalbum, etc. I had this already done before long time ago, but I forgot a bit the syntax and cant get to set it up. Router Help says: The Application allows you to do port forwarding, but only have the ports open when data flowing out of the trigger ports. When a program sends data out on outgoing ports called trigger ports, the device then allows incoming data on the open ports specified in your port triggering configuration. 1.Trigger Port Start Trigger Port Start Specify the start port on the device that would trigger the device to open ports for incoming data. 2.Trigger Port End Specify the end port on the device that would trigger the device to open ports for incoming data. You can enter a port number the same as the trigger port start or enter a larger port number to specify a port range. 3.Trigger Traffic Protocol Type Select the trigger traffic type. Open Port Specify all the ports to be opened. It's content could be: A single port only. A port range only. Start open port number and end port number should be separated by "-" . Combined several single port and several port ranges. Each single port or port range should be separated by "," . Open Traffic Protocol Type Select the open traffic type. • Oracle 11g Data Guard over a WAN

  Hi - We are in process of looking at using Oracle's Data Guard to replicate our 11g instance from a colo facility in Washington DC to Chicago. To give some basics we have approximately 25TB of storage and a healthy transaction rate in the 1-2K/sec range. Also, because we are processing data in real-time we have a 24x7x365 requirement for processing data. We don't have any respites as far as volume except for system upgrades (once every few months) where we take the system offline but then course experience a spike in transactions when we bring the system back on-line. Ideally we would want the second instance in the DG configuration semi-online in a read-only fashion for reports/etc. We evaluated DG in 10g and were not overly impressed and research seemed to show that earlier versions had issues with replication over a WAN but I have heard good things about modifications the product has gone through w/ 11g. Can anyone confirm an instance of this size and transaction rate being replicated over a WAN and if so what is the general latency? An information or experiences with a DG implementation that is of this size and scope would really be helpful (or larger - I also realize we are still relatively small compared to many others out there). • How to distribute multiple executions of an app across many machines

  I've got a simulation app (64-bit windows) that runs without any user interaction. This app gathers information and pushes it to a remote MS SQL Server. What I'd like to do is execute this simulation as many times as I can on multiple machines after our nightly build has finished and it has passed the test suite. If possible I'd love to have the ability to configure it to stop after x total runs or if the entire batch has taken over y hours. I've tried using Visual Studio's built in test framework since we already have a test lab set up with multiple agents. I created a single unit test that simply runs the simulation then I created an ordered test and added that single test multiple times (from what I gather, this is the only way to execute the same unit test more than once). I found that ordered tests are only run on a single agent and not distributed which is very limiting. We use TeamCity to perform our nightly builds and I suspect it's possible to implement this on top of that, but I'm fairly new to TeamCity. We also have Jenkins and Bamboo available and I'm open to any other software that would get the job done presuming it runs on a 64-bit Windows OS. Any suggestions?

• Nginx and Wordpress side-by-side with static directory alias?

  I'm a Nginx novice, but I have it set up with Wordpress Multisite (subdirectories) and php-fpm, and it's working great as is. This lets me set up Wordpress sites off the web root: domain.com/site1 - a Wordpress network single site, which renders as expected. domain.com/site2 - ditto etc. Concurrently, I can easily create static files in the web root that don't conflict or interact with Wordpress, and they are also rendered normally. domain.com/hello.html - rendered normally domain.com/hello.php - rendered normally, including php processing domain.com/static/hello.php - rendered normally (along as "static" isn't a WP single site name) What I'd like to do, and this is where I'm out of my depth with nginx.conf, is create a root directory domain.com/static and put static sites in there domain.com/static/site3 domain.com/static/site4 and have Nginx check the request that comes into the root request comes in for: domain.com/site3 and before handing off to Wordpress, check to see if it exists in the /static folder checks: domain.com/static/site3 - static content exists there and if so, serves that content while maintaining the root URI. serves: domain.com/site3 (with content from domain.com/static/site3) if not, it lets Wordpress check if /site3 is a Wordpress single network site as it does now, and the process continues normally. In nginx.conf, in the server section, I start with this try_files rule: location / { try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?q=$uri&$args; } I then include a bunch of Wordpress specific rules as identified at http://codex.wordpress.org/Nginx under the subdirectory section. I can see that rewrite rules might take care of it easily, but in my experimentation I've only achieved a bunch of looping (/static/static/static, etc.) and managed to bypass Wordpress if the looping stopped. Sorry if this is a very long-winded way of asking a simple question, but I'm definitely learning some of this stuff for the first time. Thanks!

• Linux Firefox copy/paste issue

  I'm using Firefox 15.0.1 on Fedora 17 without running gnome or kde. The problem I'm having is that whenever I select text outside of Firefox, for instance in xterm, the middle mouse button doesn't copy it inside Firefox, for instance in a text area, but rather brings up a context menu. A related problem is that whenever I middle click inside Firefox, for instance in a text input, the middle mouse button brings up a menu when I'd like it to paste. Even if I select Paste in the menu not the selected text (from outside Firefox) gets pasted but the last selected text inside Firefox. In about:config I tried "middlemouse.paste true" and also "middlemouse.paste false" together with the add-on Auto Copy but no combination worked. A middle mouse click always brings up a context menu. But the Auto Copy did help with automatically copying selected text to the clipboard. With Auto Copy the only problem I still have is pasting by middle button. Follow up: somehow the problem solved itself. After removing Auto Copy firefox works as I expect it to (as any X application). I can't figure out why it was not doing it before, probably I was messing too much with about:config and not restarting frequently enough.

• SQL queries break our game! (Back-end server is at capacity)

  We have a Facebook game that stores all persistent data in a MySQL database that is running on a large Amazon RDS instance. One of our tables is 2GB in size. If I run any queries on that table that take more than a couple of seconds, any SQL actions performed by our game will fail with the error: HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable: Back-end server is at capacity This obviously brings down our game! I've monitored CPU usage on the RDS instance during these periods, and though it does spike, it doesn't go much over 50%. Previously we were on a smaller instance size and it did hit 100%, so I'd hoped just throwing more CPU capacity at the problem would solve it. I now think it's an issue with the number of open connections. However, I've only been working with SQL for 8 months or so, so I'm no expert on MySQL configuration. Is there perhaps some configuration setting I can change to prevent these queries from overloading the server, or should I just not be running them whilst our game is up? I'm using MySQL Workbench to run the queries. Here's an example.... SELECT * FROM BlueBoxEngineDB.Transfer WHERE Amount = 1000 AND FromUserId = 4 AND Status='Complete'; As you can see, it's not overly complex. There are only 5 columns in the table. • Upstart multiple instances of service not working.

  I started playing with MongoDB on Lucid. Now I would like to run a DB and Config server on the same box. They both use the same binary to launch, but with different config files and running on different ports. All directories for log and lib is split so one goes to mongodb and the other to mongoconf. Each process can be started without any problems on their own. start mongodb stop mongodb start mongoconf stop mongoconf But if I try to start both, the second one would just start and exit. Using 'initctl log-priority debug' I got the following in the logs. Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: event_finished: Finished started event Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: job_process_handler: Ignored event 1 (1) for process 5690 Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) main process (5690) terminated with status 1 Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) goal changed from start to stop Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) state changed from running to stopping man 5 init shows that you can use instance names to differentiate the two. I tried using 'instance mongoconf' in the on upstart script and 'instance mongodb' in the other one, and it still fails. I can manually start the other process, so there is definitely no conflicts on port numbers or directories. Any ideas on what to try or how to get output on why it is 'terminated with status 1'? • Dump Trac DB on Windows/XAMPP

  I have a Trac instance running on a WindowsXP machine with XAMPP. I am trying to migrate the trac instance to a newer Linux-based machine. However, I'm having a hard time getting the database to cooperate. I try to dump the db with this command: sqlite3 C:\tracroot\db\trac.db ".dump" >> mysqldump.sql But the generated file is mostly empty: BEGIN TRANSACTION; COMMIT; So that's not right. For the record my trac instance is running now and appears to have full access to all the contents of the DB. But sqlite3 (located in C:\xampp\apache\bin) can't seem to get any information from the file. The DB file itself has the header "SQLite format 3", so that seems to be correct. I need to know one of two things: How to get this dump working OR An alternate way to migrate the Trac database to the new machine. Update: When I try to open the .db file in sqlite3, I get the error Error: unsupported file format. What format is it in, and why is it unsupported?

  Hello everyone, im stucked configuring openvpn to build a multi vpn connection. like this: CLIENT - VPN1 - VPN2 - INTERNET Well, i already have and know how to done a normal sigle vpn but want to use a chain of vpns, so i explain what i have done and how i did it. ON VPN1. i have 1 openvpn instance running as server( where client connect to) and another as client connecting to VPN2 running as server. { Here comes the problem } when i connect VPN1 as client of VPN2 i cant connect to VPN1 from CLIENT, my question is HOW TO procced with this... Also have another third instance working as server to use VPN1 without chains. ON VPN2. 1 openvpn instance as server where VPN1 will connect and then forward to the NET. Im using TUN interface on configs. And iptables are on this way: VPN1 - openvpn ip server1 : 192.168.6.0 / ip as client of VPN2: 192.168.5.70 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.6.0 -j SNAT --to-source 192.168.5.70 VPN2 - openvpn ip server2 : 192.168.5.0 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.5.0/24 -j SNAT --to-source EXTERNAL_IP_TO_INTERNET Hope someone help me with this. thanks in advance

• Excel VBA and InternetExplorer causing errors on website

  I have some "clever" users who have written an excel spreadsheet that automates some of their tasks on our intranet/timesheet. It seems as if the instance of Internet Explorer that is created is not doing everything I expect a browser to do, e.g. set cookies. Is there a way to detect if a user is hitting a web site with a VBA com object instance of Internet Explorer? I can't keep users from building creative solutions but I want to be able to handle them. thanks

  I am trying to use Reflection.Emit to generate a wrapper class in a dynamic assembly. Automatic wrapper generation is part of a new open-source library I'm writing called "GoInterfaces". The wrapper class implements IEnumerable<string> and wraps List<string>. In C# terms, all it does is this: class List1_7931B0B4_79328AA0 : IEnumerable<string> { private readonly List<string> _obj; public List1_7931B0B4_79328AA0(List<string> obj) { this._obj = obj; } IEnumerator IEnumerable.GetEnumerator() { return this._obj.GetEnumerator(); } public sealed IEnumerator<string> GetEnumerator() { return this._obj.GetEnumerator(); } } However, when I try to call the GetEnumerator() method on my wrapper class, I get ExecutionEngineException. So I saved my dynamic assembly to a DLL and used ildasm on it. I have a test suite that wraps all sorts of different things, including interfaces derived from other interfaces, and multiple interface methods with identical signatures. It's only when I try to wrap IEnumerable<T> that this problem occurs. I'd be happy to send the source code (2 *.cs files, no dependencies) if anyone would like.

• JNI, cast between jobect and jthrowable

  Dear colleagues, I need raise an exception from C++ code. Raised exception must contain text and code of error. So common form: ThrowNew(jclass clazz, const char *msg) is not applicable. That is why I want create my own instance of java class: public class MyException extends Exception that contains one more property for code. But JNI interface has only declaration for Throw(jthrowable obj) Is it correct to cast instance of MyException to jthrowable ?
