• Awstats messaging non existant user causing exim4 to go nuts

  I've taken over managing a server set up by someone else now uncontactable, while managing to work out most faults / changes needed this one is stumping me. Awstats is running on the machine and sending messages via exim4 to a user every time it runs an update. The user account has been deleted and so the exim4 main log files are filling up with message delivery errors, which firstly hinders meaningful log analysis for anything else and secondly uses up quite a lot of space (it grew to 22GB unattended, panic!) I've been through all the conf files in /etc/awstats and can't seem to find any mention of this user account. Google just turns up results about how to use awstats to parse exim4 log files. So the questions is where is this setting (on debian) likely to be? Cheers in advance

• All files trying to start in Notepad

  This question has been asked, but the solutions given were worthless to me because ALL files are trying to open in Notepad. I mistakenly associated all exe files with Notepad and everything is trying to open within Notepad now. That includes regedit, so suggesting I use regedit to doctor files does not work (cmd window will not open from Winkey + R - Run). It also includes any program I download to fix the issue. I also can not right click and choose Open With because that is not a given option when right clicking on a majority of files, at least none of the exe files I want to start. Yes, I tried it on the program files, not the shortcut. I also can not use System Restore because it, too, tries to open in Notepad. I've been banging my head uselessly on this for hours. Could someone help me out?

• Centralized sudo sudoers file?

  I am the admin of several different servers and currently there is a different sudoers file on each one. This is getting slightly out of hand as quite often I need to give someone permissions to do something with sudo but it only gets done on one server. Is there an easy way of editing the sudoers file just on my central server and then distributing it by SFTP or something like that to the other servers in an easy way? Mostly wondering how other sysadmins solve this problem, since the sudoers file doesn't seem to be remotely accessible with NIS, for example. Operating system is SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 64-bit, but it shouldn't matter. EDIT: Every machine will, for now, have the same sudoers file. EDIT2: The accepted answer's comment was the closest to what I actually went ahead and did. I am right now using an SVN-supported puppet-installation and after a few headaches, it's working very well.

• How can I read data from a generated pointcloud, but from an other perspective of the camera? [migrated]

  Basically what I'm trying to do is as follows: I have a software that generates and shows a pointcloud by analyzing Time-of-Flight data (Z-Data). This software has a GUI that delivers this pointcloud on a grid, and you can watch it and adjust the camera to change the perspective, or apply filtering to it and so on. Since the Z-data was recorder through a stereoscopic system, I want to obtain a perspective transformation. My idea was to simply change the position of the camera in the GUI and than add a button that sais (ex. New Perspective) that calls a function that would measure the distances from the existing pointcloud to the camera I'm viewing it from. Of course this would generate some occluded areas, but I want this to happen. And now the main question is: How can I do that? Are there any functions in OpenGL that measure the distance from an object to a camera, or is it even possible to do something like his? Or has someone some other idea? P.S. • Polygons vs sprites rendering performance in Unity for windows phone 8

  I'm currently building a windows phone 8 game with unity, having 111 (no more no less) sprites being updated each frames. I have a strong overhead in the profiler (70% to 90% minimum) I tried the following to get higher frame rate, I'm running it with minimum quality settings, I tried disabling and enabling V-Sync Finally I managedto get 60Fps, but I still have large overhead. I believe I should have more than 60Fps for such few amount. Moreover, I still have to implement the game logic over this so I'd like some room in my FPS to be able to work. I was wondering if it would be better in terms of performance to use polygons instead of sprites? As sprites are quite new in Unity, (that would give me around 222 triangles). Did someone tried to check the performance differences between sprites and actual mesh renderes in Unity when it comes to phones? If so what could be the best option in that case? FYI : I'm using the Windows Phone 8 emulator on Visual studio, I have a compliant computer for that so it should normally reflect the behavior of a real phone (expecting some differences but still...) EDIT : To clarify my question i wonder what is the most efficient in windows phone 8 : Sprites or Mesh renderers?

• Tutuorial for Quick Look Generator for Mac

  I've checked out Apple's Quick Look Programming Guide: Introduction to Quick Look page in the Mac Dev Center, but as a more of a science programmer rather than an Apple programmer, it is a little over my head (but I could get through it in a weekend if I bash my head against it long enough). Does anyone know of a good basic Quick Look Generators tutorial that is simple enough for someone with only very modest experience with Xcode? For those that are curious, I have a filetype called .evt that has an xml header and then binary info after the header. I'm trying to write a generator to display the xml header. There's no application bundle that it belongs to. Thanks!

• Motorola SBG6850 / Linksys WRT54G network problem

  I am trying to resolve issues with connecting my desktop and LAN capable printer to my network. I recently upgrade to the Motorola Cable Modem Gateway SBG6580 and have TWC coming into it, this works great for wired and wireless connectivity. Although, I am unable to connect to my device from this modem gateway. So, I am trying to cable a Linksys WRT54G (firmware 4.21.4 build 0) to the backside of the SBG6850 so I can use my printer on my network from both my wired desktop and wireless devices. I am pulling wireless off of the SBG6580 and do not want to change this. I have disable the wireless feature on the Linksys WRT54G at this moment. Can someone please help me through this dilemma? I am open to both wired and wireless solutions, but please tell me which approach your sharing in the first line of your response. Cheers!

• SQL Import to update existing records?

  I've got a table in a database that contains costs for items that gets updated monthly. To update these costs, we have someone export the table, do some magic in excel, and then import the table back to the database. We're running MSSQL 2005 and using the built in SQL Management Studio. The problem is that when importing back into the table, we have to delete all the records before we import or else we'll get errors. The ideal situation would be for the import to recognize the primary keys and then update the records instead of trying to create a second record with a duplicate key- halting the import. Is something like this possible with the built in tools or do we have to get third party software to make it happen?

• Install mSATA SSD on Lenovo A720

  I apologize in advance for using tag names in title, it seemed it would be clearer this way I just purchased a Lenovo A720 and they have a more expensive version than what I purchased that has a SSD. I figured to buy the SSD separately and save myself a little money and install it myself. I've taken off the base cover but there doesn't seem to be a place to put the SSD. Here are some pictures - any suggestions? There are places on the web where people have said they've done the installation but not how or with pictures. • Why does Windows run CHKDSK on every boot?

  Every time I turn on my PC, I get the following message: Checking file system on E: The type of the file systen is NTFS. One of your disks need to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. Windows will now check the disk. CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)... 0 percent completed I allow CHKDSK to to complete, but Windows does not load. This message appears every time I boot my computer. Could someone explain me why this message appears and what I should do to make it disappear?

• Centos and dell PowerEdge Rxxx Series.

  hi we lately purchase few dell servers all of them from Rxxx series couple of R410 and R710 the OS we used on those servers is: CentOS 5.4 we're getting very weird error messages and we lost network connectivity couple of times (restarting the network interface was needed to fix it) the messages we're getting are: Message from syslogd@ at Wed Nov 18 12:07:08 2009 ... servername kernel: Uhhuh. • How do I set the parental rating on a video?

  I can view the properties (right click, properties, details) of a video file and it has a field for parental rating. How can I add a rating to the file (the field is blank)? There is the problem that if I can add a rating, someone else may be able to change it to circumvent parental controls on a video player. This isn't of concern to me at this time. Edit: The file types are both .avi and .mpg. Edit 2: I own the file and have 'full control'.

• Azure cloud app subdomain pointing to actual domain

  Say we have a domain xyz.com registered with some registrar ... we pointed that domain to the name server of our dedicated server where the DNS will be hosted for that domain. Now, we just want that dedicated server to host the emails coming and the domain will point to abc.cloudapp.net (azure cloud app, they don't provide any static IP ... and only public url is given) Now, someone please helping me in editing/creating the DNS file on our dedicated server to make sure things work properly... if possible past here minimum settings we need in DNS file to make sure mails are on dedicated server and app is on cloud... • How to create a readonly root linux: Can be mounted as writeable for persistent changes?

  I'd like a read only file system that runs almost entirely in RAM but the compact flash or hardrive can be mounted and made writeable to make persistent changes. How do I do this on Linux? I've looked at several tutorials but none really explain how to create such a system with the option of being able to mount the storage device and make persistent changes. • Outlook 2007 Archiving through macros

  In Outlook 2007, the Archiving options are very forbidding. I DONT want Outllok to Auto Archive, I prefer to do it manually. Having said that, I want Outlook to ARCHIVE only a selected set of folders. In older version, unchecking the "include in auto arhive" option excludes these folders. Unfortunately 2007 makes life more complicated. A. Can someone help me how to exclude a set of sub-folders from archiving while doing a manual archiving. B. Is there a way I can use Macros to archive folders, this will solve all my problems.

• SQL SERVER – DMV sys.dm_exec_describe_first_result_set_for_object – Describes the First Result Metadata for the Module

  Here is another interesting follow up blog post of SQL SERVER – sp_describe_first_result_set New System Stored Procedure in SQL Server 2012. While I was writing earlier blog post I had come across DMV sys.dm_exec_describe_first_result_set_for_object as well. I found that SQL Server 2012 is providing all this quick and new features which quite often we miss  to learn it and when in future someone demonstrates the same to us, we express our surprise on the subject. DMV sys.dm_exec_describe_first_result_set_for_object returns result set which describes the columns used in the stored procedure. Here is the quick example. Let us first create stored procedure. USE [AdventureWorks] GO ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[CompSP] AS SELECT [DepartmentID] id ,[Name] n ,[GroupName] gn FROM [HumanResources].[Department] GO Now let us run following two DMV which gives us meta data description of the stored procedure passed as a parameter. Option1: Pass second parameter @include_browse_information as a 0. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_exec_describe_first_result_set_for_object ( OBJECT_ID('[dbo].[CompSP]'),0) AS Table1 GO Option2: Pass second parameter @include_browse_information as a 1. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_exec_describe_first_result_set_for_object ( OBJECT_ID('[dbo].[CompSP]'),1) AS Table1 GO Here is the result of Option1 and Option2. If you see the result, there is absolutely no difference between the results. Both of the resultset are returning column names which are aliased in the stored procedure. Let us scroll on the right side and you will notice that there is clear difference in some columns. You will see in second resultset source_database, Source_schema as well few other columns are reporting original table instead of NULL values. When @include_browse_information result is set to 1 it will provide the columns details of the underlying table. I have just discovered this DMV, I have yet to use it in production code and find out where exactly I will use this DMV. Do you have any idea? Does any thing comes up to your mind where this DMV can be helpful. • How to analyze CBS.log file by SFC command to detect corrupt files in Windows 7?

  Hey I have some problems with my Win7 so I've ran sfc /scannow and I got this message: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and was unable to fix some of them..." I also told to look at the folder of the log file to find the cbs.log. After that I've ran this command to pull out the actual problems/corrupt files: findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" This command have created an sfcdetails text file (download). Can someone help me to analyze this file? I haven't found a detailed article about it so far.

• Looking for FTP server that allows user management from database

  I'm planning a server application that will handle files uploaded via FTP. The application must parse text documents that it receives and write them to a database (most likely a document-oriented database like Mongo). And the application must also relay all large binary files it receives to Amazon S3 for storage and hosting. I'd like to manage all aspects of the FTP server programmatically. For example, when a user registers via a web page the application should be able to create the user account in the database and provision a directory on the server for receiving files. I'm using a Linux server but am otherwise open to considering any programming language or framework. I experimented with VSFTPD but didn't like the way the application relies on config files and the creation of users and directories via the command line. Can someone please recommend what server framework I should consider? I'm a little biased toward solutions that leverage Javascript/Nodejs or Python. However, I'm open to anything that can run on a Linux box.

• UI message passing programming paradigm

  I recently (about two months ago) read an article that explained some user interface paradigm that I can't remember the name of and I also can't find the article anymore. The paradigm allows for decoupling the user interface and backend through message passing (via some queueing implementation). So each user action results in a message being pased to the backend. The user interface is then updated to inform the user that his request is being processed. The assumption is that a user interface is stale by definition. When you read data from some store into memory, it is stale because another transaction may be updating the same data already. If you assume this, it makes no sense to try to represent the 'current' database state in the user interface (so the delay introduced by passing messages to a backend doesn't matter). If I remember correctly, the article also mentioned a read-optimized data store for rendering the user interface. The article assumed a high-traffic web application. A primary reason for using a message queue communicating with the backend is performance: returning control to the user as soon as possible. Updating backend stores is handled by another process and eventually these changes also become visible to the user. I hope I have explained accurately enough what I'm looking for. If someone can provide some pointers to what I'm looking for, thanks very much in advance.

• Software Architecture and Design vs Psychology of HCI class

  I have two classes to choose from and I'm wanting to get an opinion from the more experienced game devs which might be better for someone who wants to be an indie game dev. The first is a Software Architecture and Design course and the second is a course titled Psychology of HCI. I've previously have taken a Software Design course that was focused only on design patterns. I've also taken an Introduction to HCI course. Software Architecture and Design Description Topics include software architectures, methodologies, model representations, component-based design ,patterns,frameworks, CASE-based desgins, and case studies. Psychology of HCI Description Exploration of psychological factors that interact with computer interface usablilty. Interface design techniques and usability evaluation methods are emphasized. I know I would find both interesting, but my concern is really which one might be easier to pick up on my own. I know HCI is relevant to game dev, but am un-sure if the topics in the Software Architecture class would be more for big software projects that go beyond the scope of games. Also, I'm not able to take both because the overlap.

• Merge only a one remote branch into a local branch with Mercurial

  I wan to manage some profiles as XML files in Mercurial repos. The setup I'm thinking of: Each user has a repo with a branch where he manages his own profile, and a number of branches where he can pull and merge other profiles from that branch of another user. So for example I have my own profile branch and a branch labeled friends, in which I want to pull the profile branches of a few remote repos, to collect like a collection of profiles. I figured out that since the repos are unrelated I need to use -f, but I can't figure out how to pull and merge only a single branch into another. So I want like me friend someone profile ---> friends <--- profile \-> family friends <--- profile Is this even possible? Should I use separate repos instead? Is there a better solution?

• How to implement Facebook leaderboard game for mobile?

  I am in the final stages of developing an indie C# mobile game that I will deploy to iPhones and Androids using Mono. I wish to add push notifications and a Facebook leader board feature into the game, such that the user will be presented with a list of all his/her friends that are playing the game and their weekly scores in the main screen. I have ZERO experience with web development/networking/databases. I recently started researching the field and formed a basic understanding. Facebook has SDKs in PHP, JavaScript, obj-c and java, tho reading the documentation examples still feels cryptic to me since it involves web/server tech. After researching some more, I understood that my options for server side are basically PHP or ASP.Net. It seems that ASP.Net is more favorable in my case since I am already proficient with C# (but there is no ASP.net SDK from Facebook... I am not sure if this implies that I cant interact with Facebook using ASP.Net). On the down side some have mentioned higher costs for ASP.Net, tho I havent looked further into that aspect yet. I also understood that JavaScript is client side technology. I started going through tutorials of ASP.Net, I was thinking that ASP.Net is a purely server side management language, but it started feeling more like WPF as those tutorials started getting into very lengthy discussions about creating website interfaces and styles. I am not interested in that, I just want to have a web server which my app can somehow communicate with and get friends/scores. Am I learning the right technologies for my goal? should I be learning something else? I am posting this in hopes that someone who knows this field well can see through my problem and help guide me, otherwise I could spend months studying something that might not be the right solution to my goal.
