• What's more cost effective, Hosting your web startup on Foss or Windows?

  Hi, Not coming from the windows world, I'm confused about licensing. I think my knowledge may be out of date. Before we gave up with windows web servers (IIS 2), we used to have to pay Client Access licence's. This worked out quite expensive. Is it cheaper to host 1000's of users on Windows than use Free open source software tools? http://serverfault.com/questions/124329/network-load-balancing-efficience-and-limits. This post suggests I can pay $15 a month, for unlimited users. I certainly hope that this is unbiased view, I am a professional and use the right technology for the right job. I hope i am not feeling the wrath of a windows (or linux for that matter) fanboy. Perhaps a Microsoft certified Licensing person can clear this up. Should i be recommending to startups windows servers and products over lamp? Cheers!

• Need advice to choose correct wi-fi drivers for Dell Vostro 3560

  I'm having problems with my Dell notebook's Wi-Fi, it can't see some of the available access points, despite they are close and I used to be connected to them yesterday. Other notebooks and my phone can see them. I believe it's a driver issue, since after installing system I haven't downloaded any network drivers. I went to Dell's website to search for them but I have no idea which should I choose. • XenServer/Center: Shared SRs for hosts not in same pool?

  I would like to use the same SRs on XenServer hosts that are not able to be part of the same pool (because of not having the exact same cpu feature set, if I understand it correctly) in order to share templates, being able to (manually) start a host on another node, backing up running hosts on other hardware etc etc. The technology for SR can be any of iSCSI, NFS or CIFS, iSCSI would obviously be preferred. Trying to add an iSCSI volume renders a "This LUN is already in use as SR iSCSI - Shared Storage on pool xxxxxx.". Adding a NFS share on one XS host, creating a template there and then checking another XS host reveals they don't agree on used space etc. Coming from a vSphere world this is quite baffling, but if these are limitations then I will have to rethink some of the concepts for this low budget project.

• SQL 2008 R2 3rd Party Peer-to-Peer Replication, Global Site Distribution

  We are looking at hosting 3 globally distributed SQL Server installations at different data centers. The intent is that Site A will serve web traffic and data for a specific region, same with Site B and C. In the case that Site A data center goes down, looses connectivity, etc. the users of Site A users will fail over to Site B or C (depending which is up). Also, if a user from Site A travels to Site C they should be able to access their data as it was on Site A. My questions is what SQL replication technology (SQL Replication or 3rd party) can support this scenario? We are using SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise at each site, each site runs on top of VMWare with a Netapp filer. Would something like distributed caching help in this scenario as well? We have looked at and tested Peer-to-Peer replication but have encountered issues with conflicts during our testing. I imagine there are other global data centers that have encountered and solved this issue.

• Why using Acrobat 10 resaving a PDF file that was 4MB will become 3MB?

  I had some PDF files and just try to open it and do some highlighting using Acrobat 10 (also called Adode Reader X)... After highlighting, I save the file (using a different filename), and now the file change from 4MB to 3MB... is it just compression? Or making the images have lower clarity? (thought I cannot see any difference). What is the reason? If it is just compression, then why wasn't it done before, as winzip technology is quite mature more than even 10, 12 year ago.

  I've BT Home Hub in the upper flat (2-3 walls behind) and I'm using WPS Wireless-N Wifi Range Router Repeater Extender in my flat where I'm using my laptop. These are antenna-less devices. Are there any life-hack tricks to increase signal/range of my repeater without buying the new more powerful repeater? I've tried already to move my repeater closer to the ceiling or putting the aluminium foil underneath, but it didn't help. Are there any methods, specific plates or materials which can boost the signal? • Sending large files - do any vendors sell their solution?

  We currently have an account with www.mailbigfile.com to allow us to send & receive files which exceed our client's email limits. In our industry, a 10MB limit is not unknown. Mailbigfile works fine for what it is but increasingly, our clients are starting to block it as a security risk. A solution would be for us to license the software and run it from our own web server which is far less likely to be blocked. Does anyone know of vendors in this market? We are looking at web collaboration systems but that's a much bigger project. The technology behind www.mailbigfile.com isn't that complex (http upload, email notification and then http download) so I'm hoping it won't be very expensive. Cheers, Rob.

PL2303 Serial Port an modprobe usbserial raises: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/3.3.3/modules.dep: No such file or directory in the /lib/modules/ Folder there is instead a 2.6.36-Folder uname -r gives 3.3.3 How can I overcome this mismatch? Can I create a symlink? I can't flash this embedded device since it is deployed somewhere, only ssh? Please advise!

  I have a user who wants to start making podcasts, but they only have basic skills when it comes to technology. So, I was trying to get a process together that would be easy for them to follow. To upload files (the mp3's and rss feed files), I have an explorer shortcut for their FTP space. To record the podcast, I was going to either use audacity or PodProducer. For the RSS feed, I was looking for a podcast RSS generator of some sort. How can I understand which one I have? There seem to be no direct correspondence between contents of cpuinfo and info on Wikipedia page. AMD site seems to use some other naming scheme for processors too. How can I map values of family, model and stepping from cpuinfo to the data available on Wikipedia/AMD?

  What I need to setup BBS nowadays? I'm thinking of BBBS or PCBoard (no telnet! too new technology). What I've thinked so far, I'd need: virtual machine which runs DOS and hook that virtual COM-port to somekind of virtual VoIP modem software somehow (is there any?). How you can call to it across internet? Can you use HyperTerminal straight with that virtual/real modem? Or will VoIP just garble the modem data and nothing will work?

  Apologies if this is a stupid question but my only previous experience with SAN technology is using a SAN virtualisation tool (StarWind iSCSI SAN Free). This tool comes with a management interface that allows for iSCSI targets to be configured on the simulated SAN that can then be accessed. My question is basically: How is physical SAN device managed? Is an operating system required to be installed on the SAN device and then managed via software? Or can it be managed remotely via an application with no OS on the device? Thanks for any help.

  The UK government is trying to implement man-in-the-middle attack systems in order to capture header data in all packets. They are also equipping the "black boxes" they will use with technology to see encrypted data (see the Communications Data Bill). I use a VPN to increase my privacy. It uses OpenVPN, which in turn uses the OpenSSL libraries for encrypting data. Will the government be able to see all the data going through the VPN connection? Note: the VPN server is located in Sweden, if that makes a difference.

The scenario as follows: I have a software development company, and I would like to protect my source code from being copied by my programmers. One problem is that some programmers use their own laptops to developing the company's software. In this scenario it's impossible to prevent developers from copying the source code for their laptops. In this case I thought about the following solution, but i don't know if it's possible to implement. The idea is to encrypt the source code and they are accessible (decrypted) only when developers are logged into the AD domain, ie if they are not logged into the AD domain, the source code would be encrypted be useless. • Configuring NVIDIA Quadro with Dell Precision M4600

  After a frustrating couple of weeks when I recently bought my Dell Precision laptop, I managed to fix an issue where Ubuntu (yes, was NOT using Windows, get serious) would not recognize the video card and would cause all sorts of problems all over the place. I ended up one Saturday morning nearly throwing this thing away, when I managed to find a post about NVIDIA Optimus technology... ( http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2358963,00.asp ). Now I am a huge advocate of disruptive new stuff, as long as we keep the broader audience in mind. Anyhow, disabling this (which as the BIOS settings state only work on Windows 7 or later), effectively allow the NVIDIA based Ubuntu driver to kick in full force. No need for a trash can anymore thankfully. As I saw multiple posts all over the place about this, check your BIOS, disable and try the video again to see if this corrects your issues. Best of luck!

• Site-to-site VPN

  We are a small business company that is based in Sydney and opened a new office in London. Number of employees in Sydney office is 25 and in London is 6 employees. So the traffic isn't that high. Files to be transferred are Excel sheets with size of 15mb max. Both locations have MS server 2008 and Fortigate gateways. I set up a site to site vpn but it's extremely slow. Maybe this is because our upload speeds is 1Mbps only but We will increase the upload speed to 20 Mbps in both locations but I am afraid that this will not solve the problem as the 2 locations are far from each other and the upload upgrade won't solve the problem. what's the best way to go? Shall we find a provider for the VPN? or is there another technology that can be used through internet without paying extra costs? Many thanks!

  I have a Promise Technology J610S. This is a JBOD subsystem. Is it possible for me to buy a SAS hardware RAID controller and provide some type of redundancy for these drives? I am unsure whether I will use Linux or Windows yet so an answer with enumeration for both would be highly appreciated. One solution that I thought of was: if my J610s can export each drive as a target, my server will simply see 16 drives. The RAID controller can then perform the RAID5/RAID6 if I want.

• Communicate from PC in internet to remote GSM device

  I have several remote devices that use GSM modem and gather data. I need to communicate with those devices from a PC station located in a office using the dial up connection. Is there a way to do this WITHOUT an additional GSM modem connected to that PC? Is there some way to accomplish PC to remote GSM device communication using e.g. VoIP or similar technology? I want to avoid installing an additional GSM modem in the office and use some software solution instead.
