• Apache has a 2GB file limit on a CIFS network drive?

  Setup: A Windows and a Ubuntu Server are hosted in VMware ESXi I have a a 6GB file on a Windows share The Windows share is mount on Ubuntu with smbmount A symlink pointing to the 6GB file is created in a public_html directory, which is readable by Apache The problem: wget gets an error Connection closed at byte 2130706432. Retrying. after downloading 2130706432 bytes (exactly 2032 MiB, and is the same every time) Apache returns 206 Partial Content without showing any errors in the log Same error even if I download from localhost Similar error when Firefox is used instead of wget No error if I md5sum or cp the file on Ubuntu, suggesting that smbmount and the Windows Server are OK with 6GB files. No error if Apache serve a 6GB file from the local disk, suggesting that Apache has no problems handling 6GB files. Any ideas why Apache/symlink/smbmount/Windows would cause an error when used together? How can I fix the problem?   I have a powered 7 port hub connected to my Ubuntu box and it does nothing. The devices (zip drive and web cam) work direct, but aren't recognized through the hub. This worked fine in Windows 7. I can't prove it is the OS because this is a new motherboard and processor. Any advice? • Graphics and USB devices freezing soon after OS loads

  I run Ubuntu/Windows dual boot. Last night I started the upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04, and my computer has not worked since in either Windows or Ubuntu. Here's what I got when I rebooted after the upgrade, and continue to get every time I boot: Gets to GRUB screen OK. Choose Ubuntu - black screen or crazy purple lines. At first I assumed something went wrong with the upgrade (often happens). Choose Windows - works fine, I log in, but soon after that the graphics freeze (sometimes with purple artifacts). The keyboard and mouse (both USB) also lose power at the same instant, and none of the USB ports have power to them. This happens sooner or later every time I boot. Update: the HDD also appears to lose power at the same point. I have tried a live CD, but my computer refuses to boot any CD even after disabling all other boot options in the BIOS. I have disconnected everything except keyboard, mouse, graphics card with one monitor, one RAM sick and HDD; no change. I also took the little battery out to reset CMOS. I am pretty sure no matter how wrong the Ubuntu upgrade went, it wouldn't cause the above symptoms in Windows. So the only explanation I can think of is that a hardware failure occurred at the same time. Some possible causes of this I can think of are: A couple of days before this, I added a third screen (which worked fine). About a week before, my house lost power in a storm (no ill effects over the past few days though). What can I do, other than buy a new motherboard/CPU and hope it works? Unfortunately I don't have another box to swap parts into to test at the moment.

I tried both ways; in the first case (using apt-get) the server seems to work - I open a browser page and I got it. In the second case I need other packages (apr, apr-util and pcre) and so I abandoned the attempt.

• Problems installing Linux to IDE connected compact flash card

  I have been trying to install Ubuntu on some hardware (Netcom NC-499 board that contains a Vortex86DX processor). I am trying to install to a compact flash card attached to the board via an IDE adaptor, the aim being that the board will boot up and simply treat the compact flash like a normal hard drive. The processor vendor claims support for Ubuntu 10.04 but I am having problems installing it onto the card. I have been trying using a USB CD-ROM drive and the standard .iso image from the ubuntu site (md5 checksum works out fine so no problem there) but I have had no success at all. I have been able to do this with Ubuntu 8.04 but with no other version (9.04 and 10.04 desktop and alternative discs all fail). My question is what other options are available to me to try and install this? I have googled myself apart trying to find out but other than a few sites describing USB based installs using flash memory sticks for very specific hardware, I have found no useful info at all. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

  I had on my laptop a dual system (Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7) and someway the partitions messed-up. Windows stopped from booting, I just got a blinking cursor, but Ubuntu worked fine. I tried to fix the windows boot (fixmbr, fixboot, bootsect /nt60 C:/....) but now grub was overwritten and I have no OS. Finally I formatted the hdd (low format), installed Windows, partition hdd with paragon partition manager and now I want to install Ubuntu, but Ubuntu sees an empty hdd, weird, can anyone tell me what can I do? • How to make sure that grub does use menu.lst?

  On my Ubuntu 9.04 ("Karmic") laptop I suspect grub does not use the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. What happens on boot is that I see a blank screen and nothing happens. When I press ESC I see a boot list which is different from what I would expect from the menu.lst file. The menu lines are different and when I choose the first entry it does not use the kernel options that are in the first entry in menu.lst. Where do the entries that grub uses come from? How can I find out what happens, is there a log? I could not find anything in /var/log/syslog or /var/log/dmesg about grub using a menu.lst. How can I set it to work like expected? • What to do when launchpad is down?

  As I am writing this (Friday, November 8, 2013 at 9:59:18 PM EST) launchpad is down. Apparently there is a power failure (https://twitter.com/launchpadstatus/status/398980619880775680). I tried running sudo apt-get update on my Ubuntu install. However, I simply get stuck on this: Ign http://ppa.launchpad.net precise InRelease 100% [Waiting for headers] Being a Ubuntu newbie, I tried to point my sources.list file to a different source. I backed up the original sources.list and then deleted the entire file to start afresh. I then added the following lines to it: deb http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu/ precise main deb-src http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu/ precise main I figured that since I have a different mirror, there would be no problem updating. I was wrong. I get stuck at the same place. I have several questions: Why do I need to hit launchpad? I do not reference it in my sources.list file at all. Is this something where the mirror redirects me to launchpad? Is there a good article out there that I can read on how exactly this whole apt-get update thing works that will help me understand why it is hitting launchpad? Is there any way to get my Ubuntu to update while launchpad is down? Isn't there any redundancy for the launchpad servers?

I have mounted this partition on the location /media/windrive-a under ubuntu OS. A little while back i decided to delete the mounting of the data partition and i fired command rm -r /media/windrive-a/. To give me a shock; all my data on data drive is gone. Now, I know this is not the command to remove mounted partition. But I have committed the wrong. Is there any way i can get my data back. These are very important data for me. Please suggest.

• Move an existing RAID 5 array from Ubuntu to Gentoo

  I have a 64-bit Ubuntu machine with a 4-disk RAID 5 using software raid (md). I've been able to boot an Ubuntu LiveCD and recognize the array with a simple mdadm -A /dev/md0. It was easy to mount after that and nothing had to rebuild. I'm installing Gentoo on this box now (multi-boot, non-RAID root partition) and I have md auto-detect turned on in the kernel. When I boot Gentoo I get: "invalid superblock magic on sdd" for each of the drives in the array. I boot back to Ubuntu and they mount no problem. I tried copying the mdadm.conf that works in Ubuntu to Gentoo, and then ran mdadm -A /dev/md0 but it reports that there is no array named md0. I don't want to lose data (obviously) and I don't want to have to let the RAID rebuild every time I switch between OSes. Any help is appreciated. Both are using mdadm 3.1.4 Both are running 64-bit kernels. mdadm -D /dev/md0 from Ubuntu yields: http://pastebin.com/5gj2QNkV UPDATE: After rebooting I noticed that it still complains about invalid blocks, but cat /proc/mdstat shows an inactive /dev/md127 with the same disks as my raid.   I use a program called YUMI from pendrivelinux.com to load all my Linux distros from a USB thumbdrive. They just updated their installer to support the newest 12.04.1 released a couple days ago. It's looking for a ISO name of ubuntu-12.04.*dvd-i386.iso but the file I downloaded from the Ubuntu homepage is named ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso. Can I simply change the name of my ISO, or is there a difference in the ISO?

• Why Virtual Box won't give me option to create 64 bits guests?

  My host is x64 bits Windows 8.1. I downloaded the latest Virtual Box (4.3) and I'm trying to create a VM with a 64 bits Ubuntu OS (ubuntu-12.04.3-desktop-amd64). When I go to New VM wizard, it doesn't give me option to select "Ubuntu (x64)" as I have seen in other people's screenshots, only just "Ubuntu". As a result, the ISO can't boot. I tried in another PC and Virtual Box gives the x64 variants to most listed OS... Control Panel shows x64 OS, x64 processor. My host laptop is a Sony Vaio VPCZ22UGX/N, Intel® Core™ i7-2640M processor. CPUz shows Vx-t is available on my processor, of course. Here is what I tried so far: I enabled IO APIC as required in the docs. I have virtualization enabled in the BIOS. It works fine in VMware. Check that Hyper-V is not running or even installed on my Windows. Same for VMware. I also tried running the command: VBoxManage modifyvm [vmname] --longmode on for that VM, but no change.. I think the issue is really that I can't select x64 variant of the Ubuntu OS for that VM. Other people seem to indicate that's a requirement, but I don't get that option for some reason. I spent a lot of time and can't find what's wrong... Anyone knows what could be missing here? Thank you very much!! Eduardo

• Intermittent temporary GUI freeze in Ubuntu 11.10

  I've been using Ubuntu 11.10 for a month or so. In the last week it's started freezing randomly (every few hours or minutes). I can still move the mouse and switch to other terminals with ctrl+alt. I thought this was purely a gui issue as I could continue entering commands (mouse clicks and keys) which seem to be processed once the system resumes (generally 30 seconds to a few minutes). I'm using gnome and metacity. I can't identify anything in particular that triggers the freezes. Saving a file in LibreOffice causes the system to hang. I tried disabling most of the services I've installed (dropbox, autokey, etc.) but doesn't help. Switching to another terminal and running top, the CPU column is shared equally among all of my processes (i.e. non-root). I have no idea what that signifies. My PC is unusable in this state. Edit: I notice that my virtual computer (win7 64 on virtualbox) continues to respond most of the time during these 'freezes' Edit2: I suspect this is something to do with UI priority being too low... but I don't know enough about linux to know how to address that.

  I have Ubuntu 10.10 and using VirtualBox 3.2. As a Guest OS I have another Ubuntu in the VirtualBox. I am starting Guest Ubuntu automatically using following command once my Host Ubuntu boots: VBoxHeadless -startvm Ubuntu --vrdp on Then I can access to it with ssh or tsclient. Now I need to shutdown automatically Guest Ubuntu once I shutdown my Host Ubuntu. Does anybody know any safe method to automatically shutdown Guest Ubuntu with a command line?   Hello.. I have an interesting question regarding ipv6 + openvpn.. My Version is OpenVPN 2.1.1 i have been given a native /64 ipv6 network ( for this example 2001:acb:132:acb::/64 ) The plan was/is, route this block through openvpn and into an office ( for testing purposes ) Soo to explain.. I have a Centos Box as the first linux "router" in a datacenter & a Ubuntu box as the second linux "router" in the office I have created a simple point-to-point tunnel using tun ( based off ipv4 address to start the tunnel ) I have assigned to Centos /sbin/ip addr add fed1::1/128 dev eth0 /sbin/ip addr add fed2::2/128 dev tun0 /sbin/ip route add 2001:acb:132:acb::/64 dev tun0 ## ipv6 Block down the tunnel /sbin/ip route add ::/0 dev eth0 ## Default out to Gateway I have assigned to Ubuntu /sbin/ip addr add fed1::3/128 dev tun0 /sbin/ip addr add fed1::4/128 dev eth0 /sbin/ip route add 2001:acb:132:acb::/64 dev eth0 ## ipv6 Block down to eth0 /sbin/ip route add ::/0 dev tun0 ## Default up the tunnel I have also included on both servers.. sysctl -w net.inet6.ip6.forwarding=1 Looks Good... right??? Wrong.. :( I am not able to ping fed1::1 from fed1::4 (Ubuntu) (can ping :4,:3,:2) However, i can ping fed1::1 fed1::2 from :3 ?????? ( very strange ) I am able to access the internet from any ipv6 interface on the Centos Box but clearly not from the Ubuntu box.. Further, i will eventually run radvd on the Ubuntu box eth0, and autoconf the network with ipv6 address's Anyone with some advice / tips to help me out.. ??? Cheers
