• Reflector Pro has now been released!

  After moving into the .NET division in May , and having a great time working on Reflector, I'm pleased to say that the results of that work are now available. Reflector Pro has now been released! The old Reflector as you know and love it is still available free of charge, and as part of this project we've fixed a number of bugs in the de-compilation that have been around for a long time. The Pro version comes as an add-in for Visual Studio - this offers dynamic de-compilation and generation of pdb files which allow you to step into the de-compiled code. Alex has some good pictures of this functionality on his beta post from around a month ago. Thanks to the other guys who've worked on this for taking me along for the ride - Alex, Andrew, Bart and Jason. Stephen did some great usability work, Chris Alford did some great technical authoring and Laila handled the launch publicity. Like all projects, there's always more I'd like to have done, but what we have looks like a pretty powerful addition to the developer's set of tools to me. • What are the packages/libraries I should install before compiling Python from source?

  Once in a while I need to install a new Ubuntu (I used it both for desktop and servers) and I always forget a couple of libraries I should have installed before compiling, meaning I have to recompile, and it's getting annoying. So now I want to make a complete list of all library packages to install before compiling Python (and preferably how optional they are). This is the list I compiled with below help and by digging in setup.py. It is complete for Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04 at least: build-essential (obviously) libz-dev (also pretty common and essential) libreadline-dev (or the Python prompt is crap) libncursesw5-dev libssl-dev libgdbm-dev libsqlite3-dev libbz2-dev More optional: tk-dev libdb-dev Ubuntu has no packages for v1.8.5 of the Berkeley database, nor (for obvious reasons) the Sun audio hardware, so the bsddb185 and sunaudiodev modules will still not be built on Ubuntu, but all other modules are built with the above packages installed. Python 2.5 and Python 2.6 also needs to have LDFLAGS set on Ubuntu 11.04 and later, to handle the new multi-arch layout: export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/lib/$(dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_MULTIARCH)" For Python 2.6 and 2.7 you also need to explicitly enable SSL after running the ./configure script and before running make. • How to host customer developed code server side

  I'm developing a multi-tenant web application, most likely using ASP.NET MVC5 and Web API. I have used business applications in the past where it was possible to upload custom DLL's or paste in custom code to a GUI to have custom functions run server side. These applications were self hosted and single-tenant though so the customer developed bits didn't impact other clients. I want to host the multi-tenant web application myself and allow customers to upload custom code that will run server side. This could be for things like custom web services that client side JavaScript could interact with, or it could be for automation steps that they want triggered server side asynchronously when a user takes a particular action. Additionally, I want to expose an API that allows customers' code to interact with data specific to the web application itself. Client code may need to be "wrapped" so that it has access to appropriate references - to our custom API and maybe to a white list of approved libraries. There are several issues to consider - security, performance (infinite loops, otherwise poorly written code, load balancing, etc.), receive compiled DLL's or require raw code, etc. Is there an established pattern for this sort of thing or a sample project anyone can point to? Or any general recommendations?

• Cannot compile GDB7.8 with Python support

  I am trying to install GDB7.8 with Python support. From the source folder, I am running ./configure --with-python When I did tab-complete from --with- I did not see Python in the list. But when I ran configure with that flag, it did not baulk. When I run make, it complains that Python is not found. checking for python2.7... no but Python is installed: $ which python python python2.7 python2.7-dbg-config python2 python2.7-dbg $ which python2.7 /usr/bin/python2.7 I compiled GDB without --with-python and things installed without error. I was under the impression that GDB7.8 had Python support without the need for special flags. But when I run: $gdb python (gdb) run test.py I get some sort of cannot import gdb Import error So then I tried calling "pi": (gdb) pi printf.py Python scripting is not supported in this copy of GDB. So... how do I get Python support in GDB7.8? is it actually not supported? Or should I not call "pi"?

• Facebook Stories for Retailers

  Getting people to "like" a brand is important because it opens the door to a possible B2C relationship. Once a person likes that brand, the brand can post to their newsfeed with promotions, announcements, and surveys. At least for me, I "hide" the noisy brands and just monitor the ones that keep posts under 4 times a week. I see lots of people, especially with fashion brands, comment on postings at which point the posting is seen by their network. A metric I've heard (but not verified) is that for every person that comments, ten of their friends see the original posting. That's a pretty cheap way to communicate to potential customers in a viral way. Over at mainstreet.com they compiled the a list of the top liked retailers on Facebook as of Feb 1, 2011. They are listed below: 19,414,892 Starbucks 11,302,939 Victoria's Secret 7,925,184 Zara 7,032,398 McDonald's 6,117,222 H&M 5,400,586 Taco Bell 4,665,760 Subway 4,494,849 Lacoste 4,185,570 Hollister 3,973,181 Forever 21 So I guess the public likes their fast-food and fashion. To take this to the next level, Facebook is now displaying Sponsored Stories, which I saw for the first time on my page this weekend. I found this picture at the Wall Blog that depicits Sponsored Stories very well. Over on the right-hand column of a person's page, where they see advertisements and such, Facebook will post stories involving their network of friends and their interaction with sponsored brands. Now their "likes" can suddenly become your ads. "Jessica and Philip like Starbucks. What are you waiting for?" This is another great way to take messages viral by accessing social graphs. As usual there will be a certain level of outcry from privacy advocates, but given the other more iniquitous issues, I believe this will fall by the wayside. Retailers should consider using Sponsored Stories to increase their Likes, and thus increase their voice in the social world.

  Whatever bugs you My wife and I used to take some of our summer vacation I a cabin on the shore of Lake Atsion in NJ. I t is a delightful place in the Wharton forest with Brown yet fresh water, where we would canoe, swim and enjoy true rest. Alas, in the last few years, yellow flies also discovered the area’s pastoral delights and came in hoards to bug us. So much so that we had to give up. As a computer programmer I abhor bugs. The bugs that bug me – except the pesky yellow flies – are program bugs , a specific variety of computer bugs. Unlike their IBM brethren, the Burroughs used a 96 column card. The cards were much smaller than the 80 column IBM cards. We wrote our programs on coding sheets and then a key-punch operator transcribed them into punched cards. These were fed into a card reader and compiled. The compiler would notify us of compiler errors or bugs, but it was not always easy to get the meaning of the message. My friend Mark Wildt, also a Burroughs veteran, gave me an old punched card from one of his programs. Obviously a bug!! Here It Is!! That’s All Folks!

• A good tool for browser automation/client-side Web scripting

  I'm interested in adopting a tool/scripting language to automate some daily tasks connected with fighting forum spammers. A brief overview of these tasks: analyze new registrations and posts on a phpBB forum, and delete or deactivate spammers using a website/community that collects such spam reports. Typically such automation is integrated into the phpBB installation itself, which certainly has its advantages. My approach has the advantage of independent operation, etc. One way to think about this is in terms of browser automation. I've used iOpus iMacros for Firefox (the free version) in the past to respond to individual spammers, but current attacks are highly distributed. My "logic" for pigeonholing spammers vs. nonspammers seems beyond the easy reach of the free version of iMacros. From a more technical perspective one can think about dispensing with the browser altogether and programming GET/POST requests directed to my forum and other Web-based resources. I'm familiar with some scripting languages like Ruby and Lua, but I could be persuaded that a compiled application is better suited for these tasks. However in my experience the dynamic flexibility of interpreted environments is very useful in prototyping and debugging the application logic. So I'm leaning in the direction of scripting languages. Among browsers I favor Firefox and Chrome. I use both Windows and Linux platforms, and if the tool can adapt to an Android platform, it would make a neat demonstration of skills, yes? • Packages not showing up in created APT repository

  I created an APT repository using deb-scanpackages, and it seemed to go well. When I did a apt-get update on another server, the Packages.gz file was retrieved, and all seemed well - until I went to search for the packages contained in that repository (all packages are created locally). Several recommendations suggested reprepro; I tried that. Same result - except I had to rebuild the packages with the Priority and Section lines in the control file (nothing says this anywhere). The reprepro utility also generates a complicated directory structure which required rewriting the repository entry on the requesting server. I then found that the arch directory referenced i386 and not amd64 (which was requested by the requesting server). Is it possible that the AMD64 system isn't seeing packages compiled for i386? Searching the *Packages files in /var/lib/apt/lists show that the only packages for i386 are those I added (the other files are for the server - Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS). The server the packages were built on is Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS i686; the requesting server is x86_64. I found some discussion at the Debian AMD64FAQ but it claims to be obsolete. It makes mention of an extended syntax for repository listings for APT, and a command dpkg-subarchitecture - neither of which work on the local AMD64 server. Do I have to build two different sets of packages?

  Today I found out that x265 is already present in ffmpeg so I compiled ffmpeg with this guide Sadly libx265 did not work on ubuntu, however on windows I tried the same thing with zeranoe ffmpeg build and it worked without a problem. • How to disable "N" Wireless Mode RTL8192 (Thinkpad Edge 15 Core i5) in natty

  I've seen many owners of thinkpad edges which are supossed to be linux-friendly having problems with wireless adapter. I've found several links inside askubuntu and in ubuntuforums which have a lot of work-arounds for those problems, mine seems to be wierd though. I use my laptop on both my office and at home. At home I have a router which is A/B/G and here at home the wireless connection works just fine, using a WEP key. But in work I have a B/G/N wireless router and it doesn't work, my guess is that this adapter works with N modes but somehow this is buggy in the bundled driver in natty. I've tried to disable the "N" mode in the router but that didn't work. Later I went to realtek website, downloaded their driver and compiled myself, kinda seems to work most of the time but sometimes some websites keep trying to load or load just parts of it and images start to look like their links are broken and so on, much like what you get when you were loading a page and suddenly the connection is lost. This problem, as I said, is only using the realtek driver from their website. Dmesg gives me this a lot of these: [ 5869.049454] rtl8192se_update_ratr_table: ratr_index=0 ratr_table=0x00000ff5 [ 5879.240563] DHCP pkt src port:68, dest port:67!! So I thougth I might as well switch back to the original driver which seems to work just fine on A/B/G wireless networks but not on N networks so if anybody knows how to disable that mode from within the driver please let us know :) Thanks in advance! PS: I do found a link to a similar question and it was answered but let me remind you I'm NOT using the intel version of wireless for my thinkpad but the realtek (RTL8192SvB)

• Do you tend to write your own name or your company name in your code?

  I've been working on various projects at home and at work, and over the years I've developed two main APIs that I use in almost all AJAX based websites. I've compiled both of these into DLLs and called the namespaces Connell.Database and Connell.Json. My boss recently saw these namespaces in a software documentation for a project for the company and said I shouldn't be using my own name in the code. (But it's my code!) One thing to bear in mind is that we're not a software company. We're an IT support company, and I'm the only full-time software developer here, so there's not really any procedures on how we should write software in the company. Another thing to bear in mind is that I do intend on one day releasing these DLLs as open-source projects. How do other developers group their namespaces within their company? Does anyone use the same class libraries in personal and in work projects? Also does this work the other way round? If I write a class library entirely at work, who owns that code? If I've seen the library through from start to finish, designed it and programmed it. Can I use that for another project at home? Thanks, Update I've spoken to my boss about this issue and he agrees that they're my objects and he's fine for me to open-source them. Before this conversation I started changing the objects anyway, which was actually quite productive and the code now suits this specific project more-so than it did previously. This is reflected in the rendering results of the actual program I'm trying to write - everything looks washed out because my linear color values aren't being converted to sRGB before being written to the framebuffer. On the other hand, on my laptop (Windows 7 64-bit with an Intel graphics chip), the program prints 0 (huh?) and I get an sRGB default framebuffer by default whether I request one or not! And on both machines, if I manually create a non-default framebuffer bound to an sRGB texture, the program correctly prints 35904, a.k.a. gl_SRGB. Why am I getting different results on different hardware? Am I doing something wrong? How can I get an sRGB framebuffer consistently on all hardware and target OSes?

• Why do the order of uniforms gets changed by the compiler?

  I have the following shader, everything works fine when setting the value of one of the matrices but I've discovered that getting a value back is incorrect for View and Projection, they are in reverse order. #version 430 precision highp float; layout (location = 0) uniform mat4 Model; layout (location = 1) uniform mat4 View; layout (location = 2) uniform mat4 Projection; layout (location = 0) in vec3 in_position; layout (location = 1) in vec4 in_color; out vec4 out_color; void main(void) { gl_Position = Projection * View * Model * vec4(in_position, 1.0); out_color = in_color; } When querying their location they are effectively reversed, I did a small test by renaming View to Piew which puts it before Projection if sorted alphabetically and the order is correct. Now if I do remove layout (location = ...) from the uniforms, the problem disappears !? I am starting to think that this is a driver bug as explained in the wiki. Do you know why the order of the uniforms is changed whenever the shader is compiled ? (using an AMD HD7850)

• mpd conflicting with other applications -- taking control of pulse?

  Simple explanation If mpd is playing and sound attempts to play through another application, x, sound from x will not be output. If sound from another application, x, is playing and mpd then attempts to play, no sound will be output from mpd whilst sound from x continues to play. Details I first noticed this problem with Flash, and this continues to be the most common scenario. I posted a question about this before realising it was not strictly Flash-related, but instead is something to do with mpd. My biggest frustration comes from trying to get mpd working again, as I can't seem to pin down any method. Sometimes pulseaudio -k seems to help, other times sudo /etc/init.d/mpd restart, others killing Chromium (due to Flash) with SIGTERM. Most of the time it's a combination of the above. I think this might be because I run mpd as another user and use pulseaudio. It is not run as root or current user. Also, mpd is compiled with pulse support. I have tried numerous things, however I honestly couldn't recite what, as it has been some time since. • Problems compiling with Quickly

  Welcome to another of my questions about compiling! :P So, after days of stress trying to compile my app, first manually, after porting the project to Quickly, I decided to create the project from scratch using this time Quickly. Now I've finished the app, it works great using quickly run and I haven't added any new file, just removed, replaced or modified. But it can't be compiled using quickly package --verbose --extras... why, if there doesn't seems to be errors related with my project? The fail happens because python-mkdebian doesn't haves enough parameters to work. • What's the relationship between meta-circular interpreters, virtual machines and increased performance?

  I've read about meta-circular interpreters on the web (including SICP) and I've looked into the code of some implementations (such as PyPy and Narcissus). I've read quite a bit about two languages which made great use of metacircular evaluation, Lisp and Smalltalk. As far as I understood Lisp was the first self-hosting compiler and Smalltalk had the first "true" JIT implementation. One thing I've not fully understood is how can those interpreters/compilers achieve so good performance or, in other words, why is PyPy faster than CPython? Is it because of reflection? And also, my Smalltalk research led me to believe that there's a relationship between JIT, virtual machines and reflection. Virtual Machines such as the JVM and CLR allow a great deal of type introspection and I believe they make great use it in Just-in-Time (and AOT, I suppose?) compilation. But as far as I know, Virtual Machines are kind of like CPUs, in that they have a basic instruction set. Are Virtual Machines efficient because they include type and reference information, which would allow language-agnostic reflection? I ask this because many both interpreted and compiled languages are now using bytecode as a target (LLVM, Parrot, YARV, CPython) and traditional VMs like JVM and CLR have gained incredible boosts in performance. I've been told that it's about JIT, but as far as I know JIT is nothing new since Smalltalk and Sun's own Self have been doing it before Java. I don't remember VMs performing particularly well in the past, there weren't many non-academic ones outside of JVM and .NET and their performance was definitely not as good as it is now (I wish I could source this claim but I speak from personal experience). Then all of a sudden, in the late 2000s something changed and a lot of VMs started to pop up even for established languages, and with very good performance. Was something discovered about the JIT implementation that allowed pretty much every modern VM to skyrocket in performance? A paper or a book maybe?
