• Tomcat JMX connection - Authentication failed.

  I am having some problems setting up Tomcat for JMX. I added the following properties to CATALINA_OPTS="-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=18070 -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.password.file=$CATALINA_BASE/conf/jmxremote.password -Dcom.sun .management.jmxremote.ssl=false" And have added the jmxremote.password file in to the conf directory. I wrote a client tool that connects to the JMX server running on port 18070. When i run the client program i get the following error. I think what i am confused of is what is classed as remote access. I am running the client program away from the Tomcat instance but both Tomcat and the client tool are on the same machine (i.e. different virtual machines but same environemnt). I thought i had to configure the remote authentication if i access the JMX server remotely from a different machine. By remote access do they mean accessing the JMX server from any VM either locally or remotely?

• Convert ASP.NET membership system to secure password storage

  I have a potential client that set up their website and membership system in ASP.NET 3.5. When their developer set up the system, it seems he turned off the security/hashing aspect of password storage and everything is stored in the clear. Is there a process to reinstall/change the secure password storage of ASP.NET membership without changing all of the passwords in the database? The client is worried that they'll lose their customers if they all have to go through a massive password change. I've always installed with security on by default, thus I don't know the effect of a switchover. Is there a way to convert the entire system to a secure password system without major effects on the users?

  Hi Guys, I need to build a scalable single sign-on mechanism for multiple sites. Scenario: Central web application to register/manage account (Server in Europe) Several web applications that need to authenticate against my user database (Servers in US/Europe/Pacific region) I am using MySQL as database backend. The options I came up with are either replicating the user database across all servers (data security?) or allowing the servers to directly connect to my MySQL instance by explicitly allowing connections from their IPs in my.cnf (high load? single point of failure?). What would be the best way to provide a scalable and low-latency single sign-on for all web applications? In terms of data security would it be a good idea to replicate the user database across all web applications? Note: All web applications provide an API which users can use to embed widgets into their own websites. These widgets work through a token auth mechanism which will again need to authenticate against my user database.

• 405: Method Not Allowed WCF

  I can perfectly call a WCF web method from localhost. I published to this server: http://luiscarlosch.com/WebFormClean.aspx (only firefox or chrome) with the Visual Studio publishing tool and it works fine. The problem is when a try to access it from another computer. I get the 405: Method Not Allowed. But It doest make sense because It works fine when i access it remotely from the publisher computer as I said. Any idea?   I have developed a xpcom component using c++. I have GetHWND() method in my component. I have also developed another xpcom component using javascript. I want to make use of GetHWND function in javascript xpcom component. • Viewing Crystal Reports other than through custom developed webform or winform apps

  At work we currently have a custom in-house built winforms app for the business users to view reports. It has role-based security and several administrator functions. My boss is thinking about getting me to port this app to webforms. My question is, are there options other than custom built winforms and webforms apps for deploying/viewing/administrating Crystal Reports at an enterprise level (role-based security, easy report deployment, etc)? I'm thinking about third-party packages or perhaps applications provided by Microsoft/Business Objects/SAP? We are using Crystal Reports 11.5.

• Double hop SQL delegation not working

  I've been trying to diagnose this for some time, and unfortunately Im still getting the dreaded anonymous logon issue when trying to connect to a sql db as a domain user. Steps taken: App Pool created with delegation service acct Site / Virtual dir running with Integrated Windows auth only Made sure site itself can use kerberos KB 215383 Service acct added to IIS_WPG group Service acct added to "act as part of operating system" under Local Security settings Service acct added to Log on as service under Local Security Settings HTTP SPN set for web address + service account (and FQDN) MSSQLSvc SPN set for sql box and domain acct sql is running as Trust for delegation turned on service acct, specified services, and sql service acct After all this, Im still getting the exact same error from when I started. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. This has advanced my balding by at least 5 years so far. I would greatly appreciate any additional tips on diagnosing or setting up.

• What is the safest way for a PHP script to connect to a local PostgreSQL instance on Linux?

  I think if I granted the apache user appropriate privileges and used the ident authentication method, that would make the connection more secure because then the password wouldn't need to be stored in a connection string. Also, that way the security of the connection would depend on how secure the host system is. I disabled root login over ssh and only permit public key authentication so I think it is pretty secure. Does this have any significant security benefits or is it just wishful thinking? Is it necessary at all?

Although I was able to PPTP VPN in on 321.321.39.10 (interface) which is the outside interface IP address. and it is static mapped to 172.21.37.20. So I'm thinking there must be something wrong with NAT somewhere? no response from 321.321.39.11 to 321.321.39.14.. Could anyone look over the config and please let me know what I've done wrong? Is there any way to avoid this security exception, one that does not involve my server having to act as proxy to load the image locally (because that would stress my server)? • How secure are GUIDs in terms of predictability?

  We're using .NET's Guid.NewGuid() to generate activation codes and API keys currently. I wonder if that poses a security problem since their algorithm is open. .NET Guid uses Win32 CoCreateGuid and I don't know it's internals (possibly MAC address + timestamp?). Can someone derive a second GUID out of the first one, or can he hit it with some smart guesses or is the randomness good enough so search space becomes too big? Generating random keys have the problem of collision, they need a double check before adding to a database. That's why we stuck with GUIDs but I'm unsure about their security for these purposes.   My computer recently had a hardware upgrade and now runs on Windows 7. I decided to install Ubuntu 11.04 as dual boot using the ISO I got from ubuntu.com downloaded onto my USB stick. No errors were encountered on installation. However on restarting, there was no GRUB; the system went straight into Windows 7.   I have to do some processing (enhancing metadata) on the XML document that are on my Marklogic database. For that I have created a new HTTP server that is pointing towards the database. Using that HTTP server, I write a XQuey that loop through all the XML documents in Marklogic database and send these XML documents to particular URL that reads the content from that document, append some metadata and then store back to ML. This is something I have tried on Linux platform with same version of Marklogic and it works great for me. But now, when I am trying the same on window platform (Windows 7 Enterprise addition) and it's not working. Approaches I tried to resolve that: Running Marklogic Server as "Run as Administrator". Putting HTTP server's Base directory into D:/ directory i.e. directory that does not have windows installed within it. Above same with putting forest to D:/ directory. • Creating compound applications in Windows 7

  I need to port a suite of Windows applications (running under XP with little security turned on) to Windows 7 with various levels of security, depending on how our clients may configure it. Each functional area is a seperate executable or DLL that is downloaded and registered by a central 'compound' application. This means that the different parts are all joined together to form in effect a large single application. My problem is that the compound application knows about the other applications via COM registery, either as a typelibrary or as OCXs, where appropriate. I have tried several questions here to try and solve the problems I am getting, but I don't seem to be able to get around the problem of needing elevated access to register applications and access the registry. Our clients will be expecting the same (relatively) seemless download and activation process as current under XP. So does anyone have a solution for registering typelibraries and OCX controls without need to go through an elevation process. Thanks in advance

• Is it possible to prevent a locally-running SWF (AS3) from downloading from my website?

  I've got a crossdomain.xml file which allows SWFs running on only a certain few domains to download resources from my domain. However, one simple way around this is for a user to download the SWF to their local machine, and run it there (i.e. by double-clicking on it within Windows Explorer, not by running through http://localhost). It seems that when this happens, the crossdomain.xml file is ignored. I understand that in my actionscript, I can do this: if (Security.sandboxType.indexOf(Security.REMOTE) == -1) // running locally - don't allow However it is incredibly easy for someone to decompile the SWF and simply remove this line. Is it possible to do something on the server side to stop a locally running SWF to download from my site? I tried checking the referrer but this field often isn't populated.
