• How bad is opening and closing a SQL connection for several times? What is the exact effect?

  For example, I need to fill lots of DataTables with SQLDataAdapter's Fill() method: DataAdapter1.Fill(DataTable1); DataAdapter2.Fill(DataTable2); DataAdapter3.Fill(DataTable3); DataAdapter4.Fill(DataTable4); DataAdapter5.Fill(DataTable5); .... .... Even all the dataadapter objects use the same SQLConnection, each Fill method will open and close the connection unless the connection state is already open before the method call. What I want to know is how does unnecessarily opening and closing SQLConnections affect the performance of the application. How much does it need to scale to see the bad effects of this problem (100,000s of concurrent users?). In a mid-size website (daily 50000 users) does it worth bothering and searching for all the Fill() calls, keeping them together in the code and opening the connection before any Fill() call and closing afterwards?

• TextField breaking MOUSE_OVER in as3: only after moving it!

  I'm having a really weird problem with the MOUSE_OVER event. I'm building dynamic tabs representing mp3 songs containing textfields with info and a dynamic image for the cover art. I am trying to get a simple MOUSE_OVER working over the whole tab, such that you can select the next song to play. I am using a Sprite with alpha 0 that overlays my whole tab (incl. the textFields) as a Listener for MOUSE_OVER and _OUT... I've checked by setting the alpha to something visible and it indeed covers my tab and follows it around as I move it (just making sure I'm not moving the tab without moving the hotspot). Also, I only create it once my cover art is loaded, ensuring that it will cover that too. Now, when the tab is in the top position, everything is dandy. As soon as I move the tab to make space for the next tab, the textFields break my roll behaviour... just like that noob mistake of overlaying a sprite over the one that you're listening for MouseEvents on. But... the roll area is still on top of the field, I've set selectable and mouseEnabled to false on the textFields... nothing. It is as if the mere fact of moving the whole tab now puts the textField on top of everything in my tab (whereas visually, it's still in its expected layer). • How do I get started writing a .Net-wrapper around C++ Omniorb-stubs

  Hello there, my job is to access a CPRBA-server-application from .NET 3.5. After evaluating projets like IIOP.Net (undefined state) and products like VisiBroker (expensive) I'd like to do it "by myself" and write a .Net-Wrapper around C++-Stubs generated my Omniidl (the Omniorb IDL to C++ generator). This means writing some kind of layer of managed code (CLI) around the unmanaged C++ code. My question is: Has anyone experience in this topic? I honestly don't know how to do it the best way. Right now I plan to create a managed class for every unmanaged class, each managed class itself has a member to an instance of the unmanaged class, which is not garbage-collected. Is this the right way to do it or am I on the wrong path? Thanks in advance!

  When you have a button, and do something like: Private Function Button_OnClick Button.Enabled = False [LONG OPERATION] End Function Then the button will not be grayed, because the long operation prevents the UI thread from repainting the control. I know the right design is to start a background thread / dispatcher, but sometimes that's too much hassle for a simple operation. So how do I force the button to redraw in disabled state? I tried .UpdateLayout() on the Button, but it didn't have any effects. I also tried System.Windows.Forms.DoEvents() which normally works when using WinForms, but it also had no effect.

  In order to create a “destination” auto filter input field on our website, I need a data source that provides a hierarchical data set of Region, Country, County/State, City and Town (plus an area like the Peak District National Park if at all possible) I know sites like Trip Advisor and Facebook seem to have very robust datasets for this. When you type, it brings up a match list with the hierarchy displayed (e.g. if you type Boston you get 6 results as there are multiply places called Boston – the hierarchy allows you to pick the correct option) There are many data sources out there but they either lack hierarchy or do not seem to be easily updatable or complete. I had expected this to be an easy task given the amount of site that have a destination or location autofill field. What's the benefit to limiting imports to a specific set of types you'll use? Is the parsing faster? Reduces collisions? What other point is there? It seems the state of python IDEs and the nature of the typing system makes it hard for many IDEs to fully get right when a type import works and when it doesn't.

  Has anyone had any success attaching a rich:toggleControl component to a radio button component (h:selectOneRadio) or alternatively any of its children select items (in this case s:enumItem). Basic code example: <h:selectOneRadio value="#{backingValue}"> <s:enumItem enumValue="VAL_1" itemLabel="Value One" /> <s:enumItem enumValue="VAL_2" itemLabel="Value Two" /> <s:convertEnum /> </h:selectOneRadio> The ideal thing would be to attach the toggle control to the enumItems so I could have it switch to a particular state. However at this point I'd be happy if the toggle control can just be attached to the selectOneRadio. I've tried the toggle control as a child of the selectOneRadio and enumItems; neither works. I've also tried wrapping the toggleControl around the selectOneRadio, the toggle control works in this case but the radio buttons don't :(

  The only documentation I can find (on MSDN or otherwise) is that a call to _fpreset() "resets the floating-point package." What is the "floating point package?" Does this also clear the FPU status word? I see documentation that says to call _fpreset() when recovering from a SIGFPE, but doesn't _clearfp() do this as well? Do I need to call both? I am working on an application that unmasks some FP exceptions (using _controlfp()). When I want to reset the FPU to the default state (say, when calling to .NET code), should I just call _clearfp(), _fpreset(), or both. This is performance critical code, so I don't want to call both if I don't have to...

• Updating div after full page refresh following AJAX request

  Hi, I have an AJAX controller action which returns JSON. The returned JSON is handled via jQuery and contains a message displayed in an update div. The JSON also contains a flag which indicates a change in state. If this is true the entire page needs to be reloaded from a different url. This is currently performed in the jQuery using window.location.replace(url). In the situation where a full page refresh occurs, I still want to display the message from the JSON in the update div, but after the page has fully reloaded. How can I ensure the div is updated with the message after the window.location.replace call and the page has been completely reloaded? Thanks. (I realise AJAX is not intended for full page refreshes but I can't think of a simple way of avoiding it in this scenario. Normal behaviour here is updating the div with a status message.)

  Hi there, I have restore a SQL Server 2000 database onto SQL Server 2005 and then run DBCC CHECKDB WITH DATA_PURITY and I get this error: Msg 2570, Level 16, State 3, Line 2 Page (1:19558), slot 13 in object ID 181575685, index ID 1, partition ID 293374720802816, alloc unit ID 11899744092160 (type "In-row data"). Column "NumberOfShares" value is out of range for data type "numeric". Update column to a legal value. The column NumberOfShares is a numeric (19,6) data type. If I run the following select max (NumberOfShares) from AUDIT_Table select min (NumberOfShares) from AUDIT_Table I get: 22678647.839110 -1845953000.000000 These values are inside the bounds of a numeric (19,6) so I'm not sure why the DBCC check fails. Any ideas to find out why it fails? Do I need to use DBCC PAGE? How would you troubleshoot this? Thanks, Mark.

  I am working on rewriting my unexpected error handling process, and I would like to ask the community: What information do you capture both automatic, and manually, when software you have written crashes? Right now, I capture a few items, some of which are: Automatic: Name of app that crashed Version of app that crashed Stack trace Operating System version RAM used by the application Number of processors Screen shot: (Only on non-public applications) User name and contact information (from Active Directory) Manual: What context is the user in (i.e.: what company, tech support call number, RA number, etc...) When did the user expect to happen? (Typical response: "Not to crash”) Steps to reproduce. What other bits of information do you capture that helps you discover the true cause of an applications problem, especially given that most users simply mash the keyboard when asked to tell you what happened.   Hey, I'm using MonoRail and was wondering how it decides when to use client-side vs. server-side validation? In my model class I have [ValidateNonEmpty] on two properties, one is a textbox, the other is a dropdown. The textbox triggers client-side validation on form submission, if I leave the dropdown empty though it posts back to the server and returns back the validation error from server-side. Is there a way to get the dropdown to trigger client-side validation? Also it's odd because after the postback, it clears what I had entered in the dropdown but maintains the state of the textbox (viewstate anyone??) Thanks, Justin

  When Windows Server 2008 R2 was launched, the "server core" edition started to become useful to me, because it lets me deploy .NET background applications isolated on their own virtual machine instance with only a small fraction of all the disk space overhead of a default Windows Server installation, and very few Windows Updates. It comes with a subset of .NET 3.5 SP1 integrated (as an optional feature). Now that .NET 4.0 is released, the redistributables explicitly state that it's not support on Server Core. Any chance that there will be a separate download available for Server Core (e. g. without WPF) any time soon, has anybody heard about it?

• Easy way to replicate web page across machines?

  I am trying to replicate a browser page to another browser on another machine. I basically want to reproduce a page exactly how it appears to a customer for viewing by the website owner. I have done this before using some impersonation trickery, but found that it would throw the session state out of wack when the site owner would switch customers. So I would like to stay away from cookie and authentication manipulation. Anybody done anything like that? Is there a way to easily transfer the DOM to a webservice? The tech/programming at my disposal are C#, javascript, WCF.

• Assigning large UInt32 constants in VB.Net

  I inquired on VB's erratic behavior of treating all numerics as signed types back in this question, and from the accepted answer there, was able to get by. Per that answer: Visual Basic Literals Also keep in mind you can add literals to your code in VB.net and explicitly state constants as unsigned. So I tried this: Friend Const POW_1_32 As UInt32 = 4294967296UI And VB.NET throws an Overflow error in the IDE. Pulling out the integer overflow checks doesn't seem to help -- this appears to be a flaw in the IDE itself. This, however, doesn't generate an error: Friend Const POW_1_32 As UInt64 = 4294967296UL So this suggests to me that the IDE isn't properly parsing the code and understanding the difference between Int32 and UInt32. Any suggested workarounds and/or possible clues on when MS will make unsigned data types intrinsic to the framework instead of the hacks they currently are?

• Does isolation frameworks (Moq, RhinoMock, etc) lead to test overspecification?

  In Osherove's great book "The Art of Unit Testing" one of the test anti-patterns is over-specification which is basically the same as testing the internal state of the object instead of some expected output. To my experience, using Isolation frameworks can cause the same unwanted side effects as testing internal behavior because one tends to only implement the behavior necessary to make your stub interact with the object under test. Now if your implementation changes later on (but the contract remains the same), your test will suddenly break because you are expecting some data from the stub which was not implemented. So what do you think is the best approach to counter this? 1) Implement your stubs/mocks fully, this has the negative side-effect of potentially making your test less readable and also specifying more than necessary to make your test pass. 2) Favor manual, fully implemented fakes. 3) Implement your stubs/fakes so that they make your test just pass, and then deal with the brittleness that this might introduce.
