• Run database checks but omit large tables or filegroups - New option in Ola Hallengren's Scripts

  One of the things I've always wanted in DBCC CHECKDB is the option to omit particular tables from the check. The situation that I often see is that companies with large databases often have only one or two very large tables. They want to run a DBCC CHECKDB on the database to check everything except those couple of tables due to time constraints. I posted a request on the Connect site about time some time ago: https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/611164/dbcc-checkdb-omit-tables-option The workaround from the product team was that you could script out the checks that you did want to carry out, rather than omitting the ones that you didn't. I didn't overly like this as a workaround as clients often had a very large number of objects that they did want to check and only one or two that they didn't. I've always been impressed with the work that our buddy Ola Hallengren has done on his maintenance scripts. He pinged me recently about my old Connect item and said he was going to implement something similar. The good news is that it's available now. • RDA and Fusion Middleware Diagnostic Framework Integration

  Further to my last blog entry "FMw Diagnostic Framework : Automatic Capture of Diagnostic Data Upon First Failure!" I have spent some time exploring how Remote Diagnostic Agent (RDA) integrates with Diagnostic Framework. Remote Diagnostic Agent, by default, collects the information about the last 10 incidents which have been captured in the Automatic Diagnostic Repository (ADR). This information can be located via RDA's Start Page Menu system. See screenshot below. Screenshot - Viewing Diagnostic Framework Incident Information in a RDA Package Note: In the next release of RDA - version 4.30 - the Diagnostic Repository menu label will have it's own position in the weblogic managed server sub menu hierarchy rather than be a child menu item of the logs menuDiagnostic Framework is also capable of launching RDA engine and including the output in an incident package. This is achieved via the command "IPS GENERATE PACKAGE". The RDA output is written to DOMAIN_HOME/servers/<server name>/adr/diag/ofm/<domain name>/<server name>/incpkg/pkg_[number]/seq_[number]/rda The RDA collected files are best viewed (as shown in the screenshot above) by opening the RDA Start Page - "DFW__start.htm" - from this directory in a browser. If you do not have a browser available on the host machine, zip the contents of the rda directory and transfer and extract to a machine which has a browser.  The explanation of the integration goes a little deeper. • Segmentation fault while switching QCompleter for QLineEdit [on hold]

• Bomberman clone, how to do bombs?

  I'm playing around with a bomberman clone to learn game-developement. So far I've done tiles, movement, collision detection, and item pickup. I also have pseudo bombplacing (just graphics and collision, no real functionality). I've made a jsFiddle of the game with the functionality I currently have. The code in the fiddle is very ugly though. Scroll past the map and you find how I place bombs. Anyway, what I would like to do is an object, that has the general information about bombs like: function Bomb(){ this.radius = player.bombRadius; this.placeBomb = function (){ if(player.bombs != 0){ // place bomb } } this.explosion = function (){ // Explosion } } I don't really know how to fit it into the code though. Everytime I place a bomb, do I do var bomb = new Bomb(); or do i need to constantly have that in the script to be able to access it. How does the bomb do damage? Is it as simple as doing X,Y in all directions until radius runs out or object stops it? Can I use something like setTimeout(bomb.explosion, 3000) as timer? Any help is appreciated, be it a simple explanation of the theory or code examples based on the fiddle. When I tried the object way it breaks the code.

• Is the separation of program logic and presentation layer going too far?

  In a Drupal programming guide, I noticed this sentence: The theme hook receives the total number of votes and the number of votes for just that item, but the template wants to display a percentage. That kind of work shouldn't be done in a template; instead, the math is performed here. The math necessary to calculate a percentage from a total and a number is (number/total)*100. Is this application of two basic arithmetic operators within a presentation layer already too much? Is the maintenance of the entire system severely compromised by this amount of mathematics? The WPF (Windows Presentation Framework) and its UI mark-up language, XAML, seem to go to similar extremes. If you try to so much as add two numbers in the View (the presentation layer), you have committed a cardinal sin. Consequently, XAML has no operators for any arithmetic whatsoever. Is this ultra-strict separation really the holy grail of programming? What are the significant gains to be had from taking the separation to such extremes?

• print jobs are held until the VirtualBox guest OS is reboot

  Here is the setup: VirtualBox 4.1.20 (which the Help window describes as 4.1.12_Ubuntu) Extension Pack 4.1.20 (for USB support) Windows 7 Home Premium as a guest operating system on VirtualBox Ubuntu 12.04 with dist-upgrade's to September 2012 as the host operating system. Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b, which I believe is a GDI printer, connected via USB. The problem is that often print jobs will sit in the print queue and nothing comes out of the printer. The printer status for the first item in the queue will be Printing even though nothing happens. Then upon rebooting Windows, the print jobs get printed, seemingly simultaneous to the rebooting process; that is as Windows reloads. One way to avoid this problem is to reboot Windows with the printer cable attached, and then submit the print jobs. The print jobs get printed in a timely manner. Perhaps VirtualBox has a problem with USB being plug-n-play and hot pluggable. It's not convenient to have the printer plugged in when Windows boots because: One, this is a laptop, and Two, I may be boot Windows for a purpose other than printing and not anticipate needing to print. Are there any recommendable fixes for this problem?

• Connect to bluetooth device from command line

  Background: I'm using my bluetooth headset as audio output. I managed to get it working by the long list of instructions on BluetoothHeadset community documentation, and I have automated the process of activating the headset as default audio output into a script, thanks to another question. However, since I use the bluetooth headset with both my phone and computer (and the headset doesn't support two input connections) in order for the phone not to "steal" the connection when handset is turned on, I force the headset into a discovery mode when connecting to the computer (phone gets to connect to it automatically). So even though the headset is paired ok and would in "normal" scenario autoconnect, I have to always use the little bluetooth icon in the notification area to actually connect to my device (see screenshot). What I want to avoid: This GUI for connecting to a known and paired bluetooth device: What I want instead: I'd want to make the bluetooth do exactly what the clicking the connect item in the GUI does, only by using command line. I want to use command line so I can make a single keypress shortcut for the action, and would't need to navigate the GUI every time I want to establish a connection to the device. The question: How can I attempt to connect to a specific, known and paired bluetooth device from command line? Further question: How do I tell if the connection was successful or not?

  Many websites display a news ticker of one sort or another. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. For example, on Cisco's website there is a news ticker that shows the company's latest news items. Each news item is a one sentence link, such as "Desktop Virtualization Gathers Steam," or "Cisco Reports First Quarter Earnings." Clicking a headline whisks you to a page that shows the full story. Cisco's news ticker shows one headline at a time; every few seconds the currently displayed headline fades out and the next one appears. In total, Cisco has five different headlines - the ticker displays each of the five and then starts back from the beginning. This article is the first in a series that explores how to create your own news ticker widget using jQuery and ASP.NET. jQuery is a free, popular, open-source JavaScript library that simplifies many common client-side tasks, like event handling, DOM manipulation, and Ajax. • When is the default storage rule not really the default storage rule?

  In 11g WebCenter Content (WCC) introduced dispersion rules in the vault and weblayout directory paths to better distribute content across the directories. The dispersion rule was based on dRevClassID. The only problem with this is that dRevClassID did not remain the same when you copied content from one WCC instance to another using Archiver like in a contribution-consumption scenario. This could cause problems because the web-viewable path would not be the same between the contribution and consumption instances. In the PS5 (11.1.1.6.0) release of WCC they addressed this by configuring the File Store Provider (FSP) so that all new content would use a storage rule with a dispersion rule based on dDocName, which would stay the same when content was copied to another WCC instance. To support migration from older versions of WCC they left the default storage rule unchanged and created a new storage rule called DispByContentId and made that the default storage rule for all new content. I only stumbled upon this a while back when I was trying to change the FSP configuration so that all content used a webless storage rule. I changed the default storage rule, restarted WCC, and checked in a new content item. To my surprise the new content was not created as webless. I struggled with this for a while until I noticed there were multiple storage rules defined in the FSP configuration. When I looked at the default value for the xStorageRule field in Configuration Manager, sure enough it was no longer default, but was now DispByContentId. Once I updated the DispByContentId storage rule to webless and restarted WCC all my new content was now created using the webless storage rule, just like I wanted. I noticed when I was creating this blog post that the default storage rule is also listed on the File Store Provider Information page, but I guess I didn't see that when I originally did this.

In this article, we show how to use LINQPad to connect to QuickBooks using the RSSBus ADO.NET Provider for QuickBooks. Although this example uses the QuickBooks Data Provider, the same process applies to any of our ADO.NET Providers. Create the Data Model Step 1: Download and install both the Data Provider from RSSBus and LINQPad (available at www.linqpad.net Step 2: Create a new project in Visual Studio and create a data model for it using the ADO.NET Entity Data Model wizard. Step 3: Create a new connection by clicking "New Connection", specify the connection string options, and click Next. Step 4: Select the desired tables and views and click Finish to create the data model. Step 5: Right click on the entity diagram and select 'Add Code Generation Item'. Choose the 'ADO.NET DbContext Generator'. Step 6: Now build the project. The generated files can be used to create a QuickBooks connection in LINQPad. Create the connection to QuickBooks in LINQPad Step 7:Open LINQPad and click 'Add New Connection'. Step 8: Choose 'Entity Framework DbContext POCO'. Step 9: Choose the data model assembly ('.dll') created by Visual Studio as the 'Path to Custom Assembly'. Choose the name of the custom DbContext, the path to the config file, and assign a name to the connection that will allow you to recognize its purpose. Step 10: Congratulations! Now you have a connection to QuickBooks, and you can query data through LINQPad.

• What would be a good filter to create 'magnetic deformers' from a depth map?

  In my project, I am creating a system for deforming a highly detailed mesh (clothing) so that it 'fits' a convex mesh. To do this I use depth maps of the item and the 'hull' to determine at what point in world space the deviation occurs and the extent. Simply transforming all occluded vertices to the depths as defined by the 'hull' is fairly effective, and has good performance, but it suffers the problem of not preserving the features of the mesh and requires extensive culling to avoid false-positives. I would like instead to generate from the depth deviation map a set of simple 'deformers' which will 'push'* all vertices of the deformed mesh outwards (in world space). This way, all features of the mesh are preserved and there is no need to have complex heuristics to cull inappropriate vertices. I am not sure how to go about generating this deformer set however. I am imagining something like an algorithm that attempts to match a spherical surface to each patch of contiguous deviations within a certain range, but do not know where to start doing this. Can anyone suggest a suitable filter or algorithm for generating deformers? Or to put it another way 'compressing' a depth map? (*Push because its fitting to a convex 'bulgy' humanoid so transforms are likely to be 'spherical' from the POV of the surface.)

  I've trolled the internets to make hdmi work on my system Ubuntu 12.04 software center kernel 3.5 uname: Linux ubuntu 3.5.0-18-generic #29~precise1-Ubuntu SMP...x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux open source radeon drivers vgaswitcheroo (hybrid intel/radeon gpu): I boot with intel, not radeon, running. (and recall that with kernel 3.5, vgaswitcheroo now gives info on a third item, "DIS-Audio"; it indicates pwr on my system) ( /etc/rc.local: chown user:user /sys/kernel/debug/ # change "username" with your user name echo OFF /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch ) grub indeed now has "radeon.audio=1" for testing audio, I did aplay -l which gave me the card and device, which made me try aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav and lo! I get crystal clear sound on my hdtv. If I play an mp3 file as the argument to that command, I get noise as, I guess, aplay interprets the mp3 code as a wav. If I play a .wav that is not in the /usr/share/sounds/alsa/ directory, I get nothing. Internet flash video in browser plays no sound over hdmi. Both system sounds control and pavucontrol have hdmi cedar selected. Alas, I can not get sound for any gui test (left, right). Why would only aplay, and only when directed with "-D plughw", yield sound over hdmi? I've also tried only using one sound program at a time, if it was a limitation of alsa, so I tried aplay with web browser and even the sound control gui closed. I tried each of the last two, running alone. No improvement. alsamixer only shows hda intel and I think it's only the intel audio, not the hdmi.

• Pausing and Resuming the jQuery / ASP.NET News Ticker

  Many websites display a news ticker of one sort or another. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. In December 2010 I wrote an article titled Use jQuery and ASP.NET to Build a News Ticker that explored how to create your own news ticker widget using jQuery and ASP.NET. The news ticker's content is defined as an unordered list (<ul>) where each list item (<li>) represents a news headline. Once the ticker's content is defined, having it cycle through the head lines is as simple as calling the JavaScript function startTicker(id, numberToShow, duration), which begins cycling the headlines in the unordered list with the specified id, showing numberToShow headlines at a time and cycling to the next headline every duration number of milliseconds. This installment shows how to enhance the news ticker to enable pausing and resuming. With these enhancements, the ticker can be configured to automatically pause rotating its headlines when the user mouses over it, and to resume rotating them once the user mouses out. • Android: how do I switch between game scenes in a game? Any tutorials?

  I am trying to create a simple game using the Android SDK without using AndEngine (or any other game engine). I have plenty of experience designing games from the past, but I'm having lots of trouble trying to use the Android SDK to make my game. By far my biggest hurdle right now is switching between views. That is, for example, going from the menu to the first level, etc. I am using a traditional model I learned (I think it's called a scene stack or something?) in which you push the current scene onto a stack and the game's main loop runs the top item of the stack. This model seems non-trivial to implement in the Android SDK, mostly because Android seems to be picky about which thread instantiates which view. My issue is that I want the first level to show up when you press a button on the main menu, but when I instantiate the first level (the level class extends SurfaceView and implements SurfaceHolder.Callback) I get a runtime error complaining that the thread that runs the main menu can't instantiate this class. Something about calling Looper.prepare(). I figured at this point I was probably doing things wrong. I'm not sure how to specifically phrase my issue into a question, so maybe I should leave it as either 1) Does anybody know a good way (or the 'proper' way) to switch between scenes in an Android game? or 2) Are there any tutorials out there which show how to create a game that doesn't take place entirely in one scene? (I have googled for a while to no avail... maybe someone else knows of one?) Thanks!

In addition to the stay service there are some other services. Each service has its own calculation logic. At this moment I have InvoiceItemsGenerator do everything but I am aware that there is a better design.

• What reasons are there to reduce the max-age of a logo to just 8 days? [closed]

  Most websites set max-age=31536000 (1 year) on the Cache-control headers of static assets such as logo images. Examples: YouTube Yahoo Twitter BBC But there is a notable exception: Google's logo has max-age=691200 (8 days). I've checked the headers on the Google logo in the past, and it definitely used to be 1 year. (Also, it used to be part of a sprite, and now it is a standalone logo image, but that's probably another question...) What could be valid technical reasons why they would want to reduce its cache lifetime to just 8 days? Google's homepage is one of the most carefully optimised pages in the world, so I imagine there's a good reason. Edit: Please make sure you understand these points before answering: Nobody uses short max-age lifetimes to allow modifying a static asset in future. When you modify it, you just serve it at a different URL. So no, it's nothing to do with Google doodles. Think about it: even if Google didn't understand this basic trick of HTTP, 8 days still wouldn't be appropriate, as only those users who don't have the original logo cached would see the doodle on doodle-day – and then that group of users would go on seeing the doodle for the following 8 days after Google changed it back :) Web servers do not worry about "filling up" the caches of clients (or proxies). The client manages this by itself – when it hits its own storage limit, it just starts dropping the lowest priority items to make space for new items. The priority score is based on the question "How likely am I to benefit from having cached this URL?", which is nothing to do with what max-age value the server sent when the URL was originally requested; it's a heuristic based on the "frecency" of requests for that URL. The max-age simply lets the server set a cut-off point – the time at which the client is supposed to discard the item regardless of how often it's being re-used. It would be very nice and trusting of a downstream client/proxy to rely on all origin servers "holding back" from filling up their caches, but I don't think we live in that world ;)

  I ran across a problem where goal was to use dynamic programming (instead of other approaches). There is a distance to be spanned, and a set of cables of different lengths. What is the minimum number of cables needed to span the distance exactly? To me this looked like a knapsack problem, but since there could be multiples of a particular length, it was a bounded knapsack problem, rather than a 0/1 knapsack problem. (Treat the value of each item to be its weight.) Taking the naive approach (and not caring about the expansion of the search space), the method I used to convert the bounded knapsack problem into a 0/1 knapsack problem, was simply break up the multiples into singles and apply the well-known dynamic programming algorithm. Unfortunately, this leads to sub-optimal results. For example, given cables: 1 x 10ft, 1 x 7ft, 1 x 6ft, 5 x 3ft, 6 x 2ft, 7 x 1ft If the target span is 13ft, the DP algorithm picks 7+6 to span the distance. A greedy algorithm would have picked 10+3, but it's a tie for minimum number of cables. The problem arises, when trying to span 15ft. The DP algorithm ended up picking 6+3+3+3 to get 4 cables, while the greedy algorithm correctly picks 10+3+2 for only 3 cables. Anyway, doing some light scanning of converting bounded to 0/1, it seems like the well-known approach to convert multiple items to { p, 2p, 4p ... }. My question is how does this conversion work if p+2p+4p does not add up to the number of multiple items. For example: I have 5 3ft cables. I can't very well add { 3, 2x3, 4x3 } because 3+2x3+4x3 5x3. Should I add { 3, 4x3 } instead? [I'm currently trying to grok the "Oregon Trail Knapsack Problem" paper, but it currently looks like the approach used there is not dynamic programming.]

• Why can't I compare two Texture2D's?

  I am trying to use an accessor, as it seems to me that that is the only way to accomplish what I want to do. Here is my code: Game1.cs public class GroundTexture { private Texture2D dirt; public Texture2D Dirt { get { return dirt; } set { dirt = value; } } } public class Main : Game { public static Texture2D texture = tile.Texture; GroundTexture groundTexture = new GroundTexture(); public static Texture2D dirt; protected override void LoadContent() { Tile tile = (Tile)currentLevel.GetTile(20, 20); dirt = Content.Load<Texture2D>("Dirt"); groundTexture.Dirt = dirt; Texture2D texture = tile.Texture; } protected override void Update(GameTime gameTime) { if (texture == groundTexture.Dirt) { player.TileCollision(groundBounds); } base.Update(gameTime); } } I removed irrelevant information from the LoadContent and Update functions. On the following line: if (texture == groundTexture.Dirt) I am getting the error Operator '==' cannot be applied to operands of type 'Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Graphics.Texture2D' and 'Game1.GroundTexture' Am I using the accessor correctly? And why do I get this error? "Dirt" is Texture2D, so they should be comparable. This using a few functions from a program called Realm Factory, which is a tile editor. The numbers "20, 20" are just a sample of the level I made below: tile.Texture returns the sprite, which here is the content item Dirt.png Thank you very much!
