• Creating Transparent Game Menu Items using AndEngine

  I'm trying to create a Game Menu which contains some Menu Items like New Game Multiplayer Options Exit I want to make this Menu Items Transparent. Only Text in White color should be visible. So i guess i do not need any background image for Menu Items. I have seen examples of SpriteButton like given below. • New PeopleSoft Applications Search

  As you may have seen from the PeopleTools 8.52 Release Value Proposition , PeopleTools intends to introduce a new search capability in release 8.52. We believe this feature will not only improve the ability of users to find content, but will fundamentally change the way people navigate around the PeopleSoft ecosystem. PeopleSoft applications will be delivering this new search in coming releases and feature packs. PeopleSoft Application Search is actually a framework—a group of features that provides an improved means of searching for a variety of content across PeopleSoft applications. From a user experience perspective, the new search offers a powerful, keyword-based search presented in a familiar, intuitive user experience. Rather than browsing through long menu hierarchies to find a page, data item, or transaction, users can use PeopleSoft Application Search to directly navigate to desired locations. We envision this to be similar to how people navigate across the internet. This capability may reduce or even eliminate the need to navigate PeopleSoft applications using the existing application menu system (though menus will still be available to people that prefer that method). The new search will be available at any point in an application and can be configured to span multiple PeopleSoft applications. It enables users to initiate transactions or navigate to key information without using the PeopleSoft application menus. In addition, filters and facets will enable people to narrow their search results sets, making it easier to identify and navigate to desired application content. Action menus are embedded directly in the search results, allowing users to navigate straight to specific related transactions – pre-populated with the selected search results data. PeopleSoft Applications Search framework uses Oracle’s Secure Enterprise Search as its search engine. Most Customers will benefit from the new search when it is delivered with applications. However, customers can start deploying it after a Tools-only upgrade. In this case, however, customers would have to create their own indices and implement security.

  I am managing a website called Rent A Boat Amsterdam. We have a system that gathers reviews from people that have used our services and that publishes these customer reviews making them available for all website visitors. When these customer reviews are published we have placed them within the appropriate tags according to the guidelines set by Google, which you can find here. • 11 ADF Mobile Apps in 30 Hours

  The Oracle ADF Mobile team took part in a special "hackathon" this weekend, where 11 teams of new college hires who joined Oracle lately spent 30 hours building enterprise mobile applications leveraging ADF Mobile. One important thing to note - none of the participants worked with Oracle ADF Mobile before! In fact 90% of them didn't develop with ADF previously. All they had is a 2 hour training session before the event - and that's all they needed. From that point on they were able to build great cross device mobile applications. So what did they build? • How to communicate within a company what is being Continually Deployed

  I work for a small development company, 20 people total in the entire company, 3 in actual development, and we've adopted CD for our commits to trunk, and it works great, from a code management and up-time side. However - we're getting flak from our support staff and marketing department that they don't feel that they're getting enough lead time on new features and notifications on bug fixes that could change behavior. Part of why we love the CD system is for us in development, it's fast, we fix the bug, add the quick feature, close the Bugz and move on with our day to the next item. All members of our company are now on HipChat at all times, and when a deployment occurs, a message is sent to a room that all company members are in, letting them know what was just deployed (it just shows the commit messages from tip back to the last recorded deployment). We in development are also attempting to make sure that when we're making a change that modifies the UI or a public facing behavior, we post a screenshot to the All Company room and explain what the behavior change is, seeking pushback or concerns. Often, the response is silence. Sometimes, it's a few minor questions, but nothing that need stop the deployment from happening. What I'm wondering is how do other users of the CD method deal with notifications of new features and changes to areas of the company that are not development - and eventually on to customers in the world?   A few weeks ago I blogged about Windows Azure Mobile Services - a new capability in Windows Azure that makes it incredibly easy to connect your client and mobile applications to a scalable cloud backend. Earlier today we delivered a number of great improvements to Windows Azure Mobile Services.  New features include: iOS support – enabling you to connect iPhone and iPad apps to Mobile Services Facebook, Twitter, and Google authentication support with Mobile Services Blob, Table, Queue, and Service Bus support from within your Mobile Service Sending emails from your Mobile Service (in partnership with SendGrid) Sending SMS messages from your Mobile Service (in partnership with Twilio) Ability to deploy mobile services in the West US region All of these improvements are now live in production and available to start using immediately. Below are more details on them: iOS Support This week we delivered initial support for connecting iOS based devices (including iPhones and iPads) to Windows Azure Mobile Services.  Like the rest of our Windows Azure SDK, we are delivering the native iOS libraries to enable this under an open source (Apache 2.0) license on GitHub.  We’re excited to get your feedback on this new library through our forum and GitHub issues list, and we welcome contributions to the SDK.   Many a times you may need to copy the "Format" in Word. The "Copy Format" feature lets you quickly and easily "copy" all the formatting characteristics from one group of selected text to another. This is helpful when you have several headings that you want consistent formatting. Here are steps on how to Copy Formatting: 1. Select, or highlight, the item of text containing the format you wish to copy. 2. Office 2003 - Click on the Format Painter Button in the Standard Toolbar (looks like Paintbrush). Office 2007 - Format Painter Button is located on the Home tab (looks like a Paintbrush). Office 2003 - An I-beam with a small cross to the left will appear as you move your mouse.   With PowerShell becoming the scripting language of choice for many people, I’ve occasionally wondered about using it to analyse execution plans. After all, an execution plan is just XML, and PowerShell is just one tool which will very easily handle xml. The thing is – there’s no Get-SqlPlan cmdlet available, which has frustrated me in the past. Today I figured I’d make one. I know that I can write T-SQL to get an execution plan using SET SHOWPLAN_XML ON, but the problem is that this must be the only statement in a batch. So I used go, and a couple of newlines, and whipped up the following one-liner: function Get-SqlPlan([string] $query, [string] $server, [string] $db) { return ([xml] (invoke-sqlcmd -Server $server -Database $db -Query "set showplan_xml on;`ngo`n$query").Item( 0)) } (but please bear in mind that I have the SQL Snapins installed, which provides invoke-sqlcmd) To use this, I just do something like: $plan = get-sqlplan "select name from Production.Product" "."   If you haven’t already heard the news, the final release of the Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2010 have been released! That’s great news for Silverlight developers and to top it off the crew up at Microsoft even snuck in a few new features including intellisense for styles (a big deal in my opinion) and the ability to easily manipulate Grid rows and columns.  One of the most time consuming (and boring) tasks experienced by developers is also covered with the new “Go To Value Definition” feature that allows you to jump directly to style definitions with ease.  That feature alone is worth the upgrade especially if you’re working with a large application that uses a lot of styles. • Formatting minified jQuery, JavaScript using the Internet Explorer 9 Developer Toolbar

  Much has been talked about the F12 developer toolbar in IE and the support it provides for web developers.  Starting IE8, the Developer Toolbar is a menu item that helps you view the page source, scripts, profiling and many other details of the rendered page.  It even allows script debugging from within and that makes it a truly powerful web developer tool bar. With IE9, the developer toolbar got even better with the Networking Tab that allows you to inspect the traffic/time taken and drill down into the Request/Response headers and other specifics. The script tab allows you to view the scripts used in the page. One of the challenges of working with JavaScript / jQuery when they are minified, is that, it becomes really hard to read.  Minified JavaScript is a compression technique and also a best practice for delivering faster web pages.  However, when you would like to debug, minified JavaScript files become very hard since they aren't properly formatted.  Take the case of the above sample, which is a basic MVC 3 Web Application.  It uses the minified jQuery and modernizr files.   I'm new to XNA so hopefully my question isn't too silly. I'm trying to load content data from XML. My XML file is placed in my Content project (the new XNA 4 thing), called "Event1.xml": <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <XnaContent> <Asset Type="MyNamespace.Event"> // error on this line <name>1</name> </Asset> </XnaContent> My "Event" class is placed in my main project: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Xml.Linq; namespace MyNamespace { public class Event { public string name; } } The XML file is being called by my main game class inside the LoadContent() method: Event temp = Content.Load<Event>("Event1"); And this is the error I'm getting: There was an error while deserializing intermediate XML. Cannot find type "MyNamespace.Event" I think the problem is because at the time the XML is being evaluated, the Event class has not been established because one file is in my main project while the other is in my Content project (being a XNA 4.0 project and such). I have also tried changing the build action of the xml file from compile to content; however the program would then not be able to find the file and would give this other warning: Project item 'Event1.xml' was not built with the XNA Framework Content Pipeline. Set its Build Action property to Compile to build it. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

• SharePoint Web Part Constructor Fires Twice When Adding it to the Page (and has a different security

  We had some exciting times debugging an interesting issue with SharePoint 2007 Web Parts.  We had some code in staging that had been running just fine for weeks and had not been touched or changed in about the same amount of time.  However, when we tried to move the web part into a different staging environment, the part started throwing a security exception when we tried to add it to a page.  After a bit of debugging, we determined that the web part was throwing the exception while trying to access the SPGroups property on the SharePoint site.  This was pretty strange because we were logged in as an admin and the code was working perfectly fine before.  During the debugging process, however, we found out that the web part constructor was being fired twice.  On one request, the security context did not seem to have everything it needed in order to run.  On the other request, the security context was populated with the user context with the user making the request (like it normally is).  Moving the security code outside of the constructor seems to have fixed the issue. Why the discrepancy between the two staging environments?  Turns out we deployed the part originally, then deployed an update with the security code.  Since the part was never "added" to the page after the code updates were made (we just deployed a new assembly to make the updates), we never saw the problem.  It seems as though the constructor fires twice when you are adding the web part to the page, and when you run the web part from the web part gallery.  My only thought on why this would occur is that SharePoint is instantiating an instance to get some information from it - which is odd because you would think that would happen with reflection without requiring a new object.  Anyway, the work around is to just not put anything security related inside the constructor, or to do a good job accounting for the possibility of the security context not being present if you are adding the item to the page. • Which algorithm used in Advance Wars type turn based games

  Has anyone tried to develop, or know of an algorithm such as used in a typical turn based game like Advance Wars, where the number of objects and the number of moves per object may be too large to search through up to a reasonable depth like one would do in a game with a smaller search base like chess? There is some path-finding needed to to engage into combat, harvest, or move to an object, so that in the next move such actions are possible. With this you can build a search tree for each item, resulting in a large tree for all items. With a cost function one can determine the best moves. Then the board flips over to the player role (min/max) and the computer searches the best player move, and flips back etc. upto a number of cycles deep. Finally it has found the best move and now it's the players turn. But he may be asleep by now... So how is this done in practice? I have found several good sources on A*, DFS, BFS, evaluation / cost functions etc. But as of yet I do not see how I can put it all together.

In /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc I've changed: GtkScrollbar::slider-width = 23 GtkScrollbar::min-slider-length = 51 and added: GtkScrollbar::has-backward-stepper = 0 GtkScrollbar::has-forward-stepper = 0 In /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-3.0/gtk-widgets.css I've changed: GtkScrollbar-min-slider-length: 51; GtkRange-slider-width: 23; (in .scrollbar item) Now my scrollbars are usable with fingers, but they seem different for gtk-2.0 and gtk-3.0 apps. In the picture the left scrollbar is a gtk-2.0 app and the right one is a gtk-3.0 I want to setup gtk2.0 bar to be exactly the same as gtk3.0, that is Make upper and lower extremes empty (oranges circles in the picture) Reduce the length of the 3 horizontal lines (black ellipse) Can somebody help me? • How do I enable the globalmenu / appmenu on XFCE?

  I have tried various tricks I could find to install the global menu on xfce and lxde on the latest oneiric, but nothing worked. Does anyone have an idea on how to do that? Thanks. Here's what I've tried so far: the gnome global menu panel plugin (for lucid) via the xfapplet plugin (not in the official repos anymore) that can embedd gnome plugins into the xfce panel - unfortunately, the globalmenu doesn't show up in the xfapplet list of available gnome plugins (there's only one item in it) all instructions from an older question about globalmenu and its duplicate compiling manually the latest version from gnome2-globalmenu there is another question along with a solution for XFCE 4.8, but it's not working on Oneiric. It is also proposing to install the global menu applet from gnome using it via xfapplet. I've even found an XFCE-plugin for the global menu, but it keeps crashing when I add it to the panel - also I could not install all the packages due to some unmet dependencies I've added some code to ~/.config/xfce4/xinitrc as described in 10. of the FAQ of gnome2-globalmenu though I'm not sure what effect this should have.

• Design for XML mapping scenarios between two different systems [on hold]

  Mapping XML fields between two systems is a mundane routine in integration scenarios. I am trying to make the design documents look better and provide clear understanding to the developers especially when we do not use XSLT or any other IDE such as jDeveloper or eclipse plugins. I want it to be a high level design but at the same time talk in developer's language. So that there is no requirements that slip under the crack. For example, one of the scenarios goes: the store cashier sells an item, the transaction data is sent to Data management system. Now, I am writing a functional design for the scenario which deals with mapping XML fields between our system and the data management system. Question : I was wondering if some one had to deal with mapping XML fields between two systems? (without XSLT being involved) and if you used a table to represent the fields mapping (example is below) or any other visualization tool which does not break the bank ? I am trying to find out if there is a better way to represent XML mapping in your design documents. The widely accepted and used method seems to be using a simple table such as in the picture to illustrate the mapping. I am wondering if there are alternate ways/ tools to represent such as in Altova:

• unity, seeing all instances of same open application windows on all virtual desktop

  I noticed this strange issue with unity. I am using 12.04. The desktop has 4 virtual desktops, which I can switch between using the 'workspace switcher' which is very nice. But I noticed the following: When I have 2 instances of the same app (say 2 different firefox windows, or 2 different terminal windows), in 2 different virtual desktops, then I click on the icon for that application located on the launcher panel (the left long strip with icons on it), then I see the application comes into focus. Then when I click again right away (on the same icon on the launcher), then now all instances of this application that are open come into ONE view (may be on was on desktop 1, and the other was on desktop 3 for example) and then I can now click on the one instance window that I want to select to use. This is all very nice actually. But this does NOT work for all applications! I just tried it, and it worked for firefox, and for gedit and for the gnome terminal. I have one firefox window open in virtual desktop 1, and another window open in virtual desktop 2. I clicked once on the firefox icon, then again, and both windows came into the main desktop and I was able to select which one to use. When I tried the same thing on dolphin file manager, which I also had 2 windows (instances) of it open in 2 different virtual desktops, this behavior did not happen. I clicked again, and nothing happened. Only one remained in focus. So I had to fo look for the second dolphin window the hard way. It looks like some apps are supported by this feature and some are not. How does one make it so that all applications are supported like this? This is a very handy feature. Is it a configuration item somewhere? thanks

• Using XML as data storage

  I was thinking about the XML format and the following quote: “XML is not a database. It was never meant to be a database. It is never going to be a database. Relational databases are proven technology with more than 20 years of implementation experience. They are solid, stable, useful products. They are not going away. XML is a very useful technology for moving data between different databases or between databases and other programs. However, it is not itself a database. Don't use it like one.“ -Effective XML: 50 Specific Ways to Improve Your XML by Elliotte Rusty Harold (page 230, Part 4, Item 41, 2nd paragraph) This seems to really stress that XML should not be used for data storage and should only be used for program to program interoperability. Personally, I disagree and .NET's app.config file that's used to store a program's settings is an example of data storage in an XML file. However for databases rather than configurations etc XML should not be used. To develop my point, I will use two examples: A) Data about customers with fields that are all on one level i.e. there are a number of fields all relating to one customer with no children B) Data about configuration of an application where nested fields and properties make a lot of sense So my question is, Is this still a valid statement and is it now acceptable to store data using XML? EDIT: I've sent an email to the author of that quote to ask for his input/extra context.
