• Strange threads in application in Win7 WOW64

  We are observing 4-6 threads on Windows 7 x64 in the application which have 3 threads and behaves normally on any Windows (either 32 or 64 bit) prior Windows 7. Process Explorer shows the following "unknown" thread: ntdll.dll!EtwDeliverDataBlock+offset after random interval the following threads appear: ntdll.dll!TpCallbackIndependent+offset ntdll.dll!TpCallbackIndependent+offset after that application can't create thread (error code 8, hot enough space ...). It seems to me that some system DLL creates ETW threads or something. Does anyone know what these threads for and how to manage them?

  I have a database full of text fields that look like this: (paragraph of normal text) image:blog/clownboy.jpg (another paragraph) I'm trying to write a view helper for Rails that will take one of these big blocks of text, find bits like "image:blog/clownboy.jpg" and replace them with the corresponding <img src="blog/clownboy.jpg"> (without disturbing the surrounding whitespace) before outputting it to the user. I've been trying for an hour or so now, but I'm new to Ruby and the regular expressions are still a bit beyond me.

I know short URLs such as bit.ly, TinyURL, goo.gl, etc use the 302 redirection method to redirect you to another site.   I installed Python 3.1 yesterday on my Windows Vista PC, and was surprised to find that the version of IDLE is 2.6.4, for "Python 2.6.4 (r264:75708, Oct 26 2009, 08:23:19) [MSC v.1500 32 bit (Intel)] on win32" I was hoping to use IDLE to investigate some of the new features of Python 3... I'm learning how to use gacutil.exe I found two copies of this file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bin\x64 C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bin\ I built a dll in VS2007, then I added a build post event, that calls gacutil.exe to transfer the dll to GAC. Does it matter which gacutil.exe I use?

  When trying to do math on an big integer (int64) large number in xslt template I get the wrong result since there is no native 64-bit integer support in xslt (xslt number is 64-bit double). I am using msxml 6.0 on Windows XP SP3. • Large data processing in x86 C# gives System.OutOfMemory exception

  I am processing XML coming from server which contains both images and data in one C# function (compiled 32 bit). When I try to parse this xml in memory it gives me System.OutOfMemory exception. Is there any way to avoid this error? My guess is, system cannot find contiguous block of 50-100MB memory. (my pc hv 8Gig ram and its quad core)

  Um so I was in for a little bit of a surprise tonight. I spent a good 20 mins trying to figure out why I was able to submit a form knowing that what I entered into the recaptcha field was invalid. Is it true that you don't need to input the exact words it displays? If it shows me two words and I misspelled one of the words, I still pass validation? Same goes if "hello world" and I input "hell man" it still works.

• Arranging models, views, controllers in a Kohana 3 project

  I'm looking at how to set up a mid-sized web application with Kohana 3. I have implemented MVC patterns in the past but never worked against a "formalized" MVC framework so I'm still getting my head around the terminology - toying around with basic examples, building views and templates, and so on. I'm progressing fairly well but I want to set up a real-world web project (one of my own that I've been planning for quite some time now) as a learning object. I learn best by example, but example-based documentation is a bit sparse for Kohana 3 right now - they say so themselves on the site. While I'm not worried about getting into the framework soon enough, I'm a bit concerned about arranging a healthily structured code base from the start - i.e. how to split up controllers, how to name them, and how to separate the functionality into the appropriate models. My application could, in its core, be described as a business directory with a main businesses table. Businesses can be listed by category and by street name. Each business has a detail page. Business owners can log in and edit their business's entry. Businesses can post offers into an offers table. I know this is pretty vague, but I don't want to cram too much information into this question. I'll be more than happy to go into more detail if needed. Supposing I have all the basic functionality worked out and in place already - list all businesses, edit business, list businesses by street name, create offer, and so on, and I'm just looking for how to fit the functionality into a MVC pattern and into a Kohana application structure that can be easily extended: Do you know real-life, publicly accessible examples of "database-heavy" applications like directories, online communities... with a log-in area built on Kohana 3 where I could take a peek how they do it? Are there conventions or best practices on how to structure an extendable login area for end users in a Kohana project that is not only able to handle a business directory page, but further products on separate pages as well? Do you know application structuring HOWTOs or best practices for Kohana 3 not mentioned in the user guide and the inofficial Wiki? Have you built something similar and could give me some recommendations?

My app is recording the user voice, and repeats what he said using OpenAL. I've modified the AL_PITCH value, but it's currently also changing the speed, which I don't want to !
