Wine causes twin view to break

I have endlessly been playing around with the Nvidia X Server settings and changing my xorg.conf file to try and work for me and on most days its fine. In each instance I get it working for a while and then this morning the most bizarre thing happens. The moment I open any type of Wine program (which never use to be a problem) my Twin View setup disappears and am left with mirrored displays. I try and change the settings in the Nvidia driver, but its not interested and the screens remain mirrored. I have a work around. Restart my pc... Odd SVN Checkout failures occur frequenctly on VMWare virtual machines

We've recently been experiencing seemingly random SVN checkout failures on our Hudson build system. Google search has failed me; I'm hoping the super user community can help me out :-) We are occasionally receiving the following SVN error when our Hudson build jobs checkout source via the Hudson Subversion plug-in (which uses svn kit): ERROR: Failed to check out http://server/svnroot/trunk org.tmatesoft.svn.core.SVNException: svn: Processing REPORT request response failed: XML document structures must start and end within the same entity. (/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default) svn: REPORT request failed on '/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default' This issue seems to only occur when checking out from our Virtual Machines (Windows XP, Fedora 9, Fedora 12) using Hudson's SVN Plug-in. Systems that use the traditional SVN client seem to work. SVN Server version: 1.6.6 Hudson version: 1.377 Hudson SVN Plugin Version: 1.17 Has anyone dealt with this issue, or have any suggestions? Suggestion: ALLFILES option for RESTORE

The default action when performing a backup is to append to the backup file yet the default action when restoring a backup is to restore just the first file.I constantly come across customer situations where they are puzzled that they seem to have lost data after they have completed a restore. Invariably, it's just that they haven't restored all the backups contained within a single OS file. This happens most commonly with log backups but also happens when they have not restored the most recent database backup file.It is not trivial to achieve this within simple T-SQL scripts, when the number of backup files within the OS file is unknown. It really should be.I'd like to see a FILES=ALLFILES option on the RESTORE command. For RESTORE DATABASE, it should restore the most recent database backup plus any subsequent log files. For RESTORE LOG (which is the most important missing option), it should just restore all relevant log backups that are contained.If you agree, you know what to do: please vote: https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/769204/option-to-restore-all-backups-files-within-a-media-setAlternately, how would you write a T-SQL command to restore all log backups within a single OS file where the number of files is unknown? Multi-screen and Nvidia GT220

Excuse me first for my broken English I have 3 monitors on two Nvidia GT220. Unity 2D works fine after using the proprietary drivers. But no way to use compiz effects. Random compositing lag

My laptop specs: 512 mb of RAM, out of which 64 mb are shared with an integrated GPU - ATI Radeon Xpress 200 M. Intel 1,6 Ghz Celeron M single-core processor. I've spent months trying to figure out why compositing and effects sometimes lag on any distro I try. Now I've come to realise that no matter what drivers I try (the default ones work for me on pretty much any linux) compositing lag is random. When I used Ubuntu 10.10, for example, sometimes window compositing would lag and sometimes it wouldn't. The PC is able to render those effects so hardware is not the problem. It's completely random and unpredictable - sometimes when I turn on the computer the effects lag horribly and sometimes it's completely smooth. I've also checked startup items and there doesn't seem to be any unnecessary entries. I also tried building my own OS with Arch Linux and the problem persists there, therefore I can only assume that it's a driver issue of some sort. By default there are lots of drivers supplied with linux distributions. Could it be that they're in the way? The ones that I need are ati/radeon (or both? What's the difference between them?) and there seem to be a lot of others... What should I do?

Is The Ease Of Windows Phone Development Ruining Its Image

I was reading an article on Mashable recently by a long time iPhone user who is living solely on a Lumia 920 at the moment and giving her assessment. One thing that struck a nerve with me was her describing the Windows Phone ecosystem as immature. She wasn’t saying this because of the number of apps or the big names like most people do. She means the quality of the apps in the store. This hit a nerve with me. I find it hard to believe that the majority of app on iOS are of any higher quality than any other platform. I believe in any ecosystem you are going to find some high end, high quality apps, but the majority by default will be from people who are trying to solve a problem but do not have the resources to have top graphics and full blown testing. There will also be a large number that are just there trying to trick you into giving up some cash. Does any of the mean that we shouldn’t take notice of this complaint? Of course not! We should always strive to publish the best quality apps possible. Don’t do things like leaving default app icons and backgrounds. Put a little effort into your design. You should also spend as much time as possible ensuring against crashes and giving the user the best experience possible. Think through your apps organization and navigation. Go the extra step of putting it into beta and letting select people use it and give you feedback before going to full release. Is this a pattern? Should it be?

The following is more of a statement than a question - it describes something that may be a pattern. The question is: is this a known pattern? Or, if it's not, should it be? I've had a situation where I had to iterate over two dissimilar multi-layer data structures and copy information from one to the other. Depending on particular use case, I had around eight different kinds of layers, combined in about eight different combinations: A-B-C B-C A-C D-E A-D-E and so on After a few unsuccessful attempts to factor out the repetition of per-layer iteration code, I realized that the key difficulty in this refactoring was the fact that the bottom level needed access to data gathered at higher levels. To explicitly accommodate this requirement, I introduced IterationContext class with a number of get() and set() methods for accumulating the necessary information. This allows me to pass dataStructure1 outside of the context for convenience. In general, either side of the iteration or both sides may be passed via context, as convenient. The key situation points are: complicated code that needs to be invoked in "layers", with multiple combinations of layer types possible at the bottom layer, the information from top layers needs to be visible. The key implementation points are: use of context class to access the data from all levels of iteration complicated iteration code encapsulated in implementation of pure virtual function two interfaces - one aware of underlying iterator, one not aware of it. use of const & to simplify the usage syntax.

Hooking domain to home server with port

Alright, I'm asking two things here. First of all, if i purchase a domain let's say myhomeserver.com, am I able to make the default port go through a different port instead of the default port 80? (that is without having to do myhomeserver.com:5000 for example). Also this should be without blocking other ports (so no stealth forwarding to myhomeserver.com:5000 i think) Secondly, How could I go about hooking a domain to a windows 2008 server? I've seen it on linux but no clue how to do it on windows if it's even possible. I know I'm asking a lot here, just some tips are appereciated. Also, yes I know, using a home server is horrible for security and preformance and whatnot, I understand this already, thanks ^^

How to implement a component based system for items in a web game.

Reading several other questions and answers on using a component based system to define items I want to use one for the items and spells in a web game written in PHP. I'm just stuck on the implementation. I'm going to use a DB schema suggested in this series (part 5 describes the schema); http://t-machine.org/index.php/2007/09/03/entity-systems-are-the-future-of-mmog-development-part-1/ This means I'll have an items table with generic item properties, a table listing all of the components for an item and finally records in each component table used to make up the item. Assuming I can select the first two together in a single query, I'm still going to do N queries for each component type. I'm kind of fine with this because I can cache the data into memcache and check there first before doing any queries. I'll need to build up the items on every request they are used in so the implementation needs to be on the lean side even if they're pulled from memcache. But right there is where I feel confident about implementing a component system for my items ends. I figure I'd need to bring attributes and behaviors into the container from each component it uses. I'm just not sure how to do that effectively and not end up writing a lot of specialized code to deal with each component. For example an AttackComponent might need to know how to filter targets inside of a battle context and also maybe provide an attack behavior. That same item might also have a UsableComponent which allows the item to be used and apply some effect onto a different set of targets filtered differently from the same battle context. Then not every part of an item is an active part, an AttributeBonusComponent might need to only kick in when the item is in an equipped state or when displaying the item details page. Ultimately, how should I bring all of the components together into the container so when I use an item as a weapon I get the correct list of targets? Know when a weapon can also be used as an item? Or to apply the bonuses the item provides to a character object? I feel like I've gone too far down the rabbit hole and I can't grasp onto the simple solution in front of me. (If that makes any sense at all.) Likewise if I were to implement the best answer from here I feel like I'd have a lot of the same questions. How to model multiple "uses" (e.g. weapon) for usable-inventory/object/items (e.g. katana) within a relational database.

How do I setup PHP locally on Windows 7 with Tomcat 7 already installed?

I have Windows 7 64 bit running on my laptop with Tomcat 7 installed to run my java programs using Eclipse. Now I need to be working with PHP and as I went to install it, I read you need to install Apache Web Server first, before installing PHP. Then I read where you can run PHP under Tomcat or run PHP on Apache Web Server while still using Tomcat, if you reset the default port on one of them as Tomcat and Apache Web Server would use the same ports by default. What is the best way to do this? I don't want to was lots of time getting stuck on configuration issues.

Ubuntu 10.04: boot error for custom compiled kernel - gave up waiting for root device

I have installed lucid on my Lenevo Laptop (Y 410 series , x86 platform) and it is working fine. Now I have compiled kernel 2.6.37 downloaded from the kernel tree. I followed usual procedure of compiling kernel (make menuconfig, make, make modules etc). Then I created the initrd image using mkinitramfs and updated my grub using update-grub command. update-grub detects the initrd image of the compiled kernel. However when I boot from this kernel it gives me following error: Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems: -Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) -Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?) -Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?) -Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev) ALERT! root=UUID=/... does not exist and then it falls onto initramfs prompt. I have tried following solutions discussed in different Ubuntu forums: disable uuid and point root=/dev/sda8 (sda8 is where my kernel image resides (both default kernel and compiled one) from /etc/default/grub compile kernel using CONFIG_DEVTMPFS=y suggested here Still I am unable to boot from the compile kernel. Could someone please suggest me the solution?

How to set a theme for Windows XP to use before a use logs in?

If Windows XP "welcome screen" is disabled (manually or by joining a domain) an ordinary window is used to log-in (like it was in Windows 2000). This window is styled with default Windows XP "Luna" theme (blue window title, etc). All theme customizations (including turning them off at all to use plain Win2000/98 window style) are normally applied after a user logs-in. How can I alter this? I'd like either to turn off visual styles at all or to apply "Zune" styling to BEFORE a user logs in (and it'd be good to use the same settings as default for new users created).

Why does IIS refuse to serve ASP.NET content?

My Windows Server 2003 Std server refuses to server ASP.NET content. It serves regular html just fine but anything .net, even a one line html file with an ASPX extention fails silently. Things I've tried: Nothing in the event log or IIS WWW logs when it fails. Fiddler shows no response I reinstalled .NET with C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727aspnet_regiis.exe -U C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727aspnet_regiis.exe -I I give obscenely high permissions on everything I can think of (full control, read, write, etc.) to all possibly relevant users (IUSER*, ASP.NET, etc.). I confirmed that ASP.Net v1 and v2 Web Service Extensions are "allowed" in IIS Confirmed that the Server Manager had IIS and ASP.Net roles enabled Again: this is the scenario: http://localhost/Test/Default.htm <-- Works great! http://localhost/Test/Default.aspx <-- Bombs silently with no message at all Any guidance will be much appreciated! Solution: I reinstalled per the instructions below and it works now. Thanks all!

IIS App Pool Identity Internet Settings

How does an IIS App Pool determine its Internet Settings? I'm specifying a custom identity under which to host a .NET web application, a service account that is part of our Active Directory domain. When the application runs, it needs to make HTTP requests to other servers. This action causes it to read web and proxy settings from some location, but I can't understand where it goes for this information. Does it look: At the default account's settings on that box? At the default profile on the AD server? Its own local/roaming profile? A combination of the above? Somewhere completely different?

All of my shortcuts open same program

My Shortcuts on Windows7 was just opening VLC, and I right-clicked one of them to change the default program and it eventually opened. But because I chose for it to always open in the default program, all shortcuts did the same - they opened that same application. Apparently I had associated shortcuts to that application. Setting console resolution in Ubuntu Server 13.10 within VMware

I've completed an install of Ubuntu Server 13.10 within VMware and am running into a problem configuring the console (non-graphical) resolution. When I was running Ubuntu Server 13.04, I ran into the same problem... posted the question here, which I later solved by editing /etc/default/grub thus: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash vga=789" I then ran sudo update-grub, sudo reboot and 13.04 stuck in a larger-size console mode... just what I wanted. BUT when I run the same commands in 13.10, during the reboot it changes to the new screen-res, BUT the screen stays black and I can't interact with it. I power down the VM, go back to a previous snapshot, and try again... and again. Since the hwinfo package is no longer available, I can't run sudo hwinfo --framebuffer to see what options are available. Ideas anyone? Here are the uncommented settings in my /etc/default/grub file at this moment: GRUB_DEFAULT=0 GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=false GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="find_preseed=/preseed.cfg" GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_RECOVERY=false GRUB_GFXMODE=800x600

Most common parts of a SELECT SQL query?

I'm writing a function that generates a SELECT SQL query. (I'm not looking for a tool that already does this.) My function currently takes the following arguments which correspond to different parts of the SELECT query (the base table name is already known): where order fields joins group limit All of these arguments will be optional so that the function generates something like this by default: SELECT * FROM `table_name` I want to order the arguments so that the most often used parts of a SELECT query are first. That way the average call to the function will use as few of the arguments as possible rather than passing a null value or something like that to skip an argument. For example, if someone wanted to use the 1st and 3rd arguments but not the rest, they might have to pass a null value as the 2nd argument in order to skip it. So, for general purpose use, how should I order the arguments? Edit: To be more precise, out of the query parts I listed above, what is the order from most used to least used? Also, I'm not looking for solutions that allow me to not have to specify the order. Edit #2: The "fields" argument will default to "*" (i.e all fields/columns).

Is there a version of Debian-Lenny that is legal for export from the US?

I wanted to bundle my application in a Debian-Lenny Virtual Machine so others could download it and run it without having to configure anything. However, I don't want to have to worry about US legal issues. Many of the packages in a default Debian installation include encryption algorithms. Are all default versions export-safe? If not, is there an export-safe version? If not, is there an easy way to make one?
