  • What do you enjoy about programming?

    - by Earlz
    Some of us here(or is it just me?) enjoy programming. Even if we're not being paid for it, and in some cases, even though the end result will not do anything for us. For example, many people do the Project Euler problems just for fun, and in the end nothing was really "accomplished" materially. What is it that makes us enjoy programming? How is programming different from another job? You don't see an accountant going home to do some accounting on their own time just for the pure joy of it. How are we different? (also, if anyone has some ideas on how to tag this, then please do correct it for me.. )

  • Constructor return value

    - by Ivan Gromov
    Could you tell me what is wrong with my class constructor? Code: CVector::CVector (int size_) { if (size_ > 0) { this->size = size_; this->data = new double[size]; for (int i = 0; i < size; i++) { (*this)(i) = i; } } cout << "constructor end" << endl; return; } Usage example: tvector = CVector(6); I get an access violation after "constructor end" output.

  • How to access a website's url programmatically from within the page

    - by Jeff
    For work, I am working on a site that has a feature that lets users make custom instances of the site depending on who they want to show it to. So if they want to show their potential employer a little bit about themselves, they can send them a custom url, that has a uid on the end of it that tells the database what to show and what not to when the site is loaded up. Now, I need to be able to take the value that is on the end of the url, this unique uid that corresponds with their preferences in the db, accessable on run time. Meaning that when someone types in this custom url, I need to be able to show the name of the person whose portfolio is being viewed BEFORE password authentication takes place... If I could get the URL, I suppose I could parse through it to find the necessary UID...but how do I get the url? Maybe I am just missing something here, but if anyone has any thoughts or ideas, it would be appreciated!! Thanks

  • Generating link path with parameters

    - by fl00r
    Hi. I've got model with many associations. User :has_many = :posts, :videos, :images etc I've got helper method, which receives one of this association draw_chart user.videos def draw_chart(assoc) assoc.each do |a| link_to "update", [a.user, a], :method => :put, :remote => true, :confirm => 'orrly?' end end Problem here is to send extra parameters to update action. For example I want to get this url: /users/1/videos/2?status=done but I am confused how to realize this while I am using [a.user, a] instead of user_videos_path(video, :status => 'done'). But I can't use last, because it can be either videos, or images or anything else

  • Anonymous method as function result

    - by iamjoosy
    What I want to do is to assign an anonymous method which I get as a function result to a variable of the same type. Delphi complains about not beeing able to do the assignement. Obviously Delphi things I want to assign the "GetListener" function instead of the result of that same function. Any help with this is very much appreciated. type TPropertyChangedListener = reference to procedure (Sender: TStimulus); TMyClass = class function GetListener:TPropertyChangedListener end; .... var MyClass: TMyClass; Listener: TPropertyChangedListener; begin MyClass:= TMyClass.create; Listener:= MyClass.GetListener; // Delphi compile error: E2010 Incompatible types: TPropertyChangedListener' and 'Procedure of object' end;

  • Sinatra, JavaScript Cross-Domain Requests JSON

    - by pex
    I run a REST-API build on top of Sinatra. Now I want to write a jQuery Script that fetches data from the API. Sinatra is told to response with JSON before do content_type :json end A simple Route looks like get '/posts' do Post.find.to_json end My jQuery script is a simple ajax-call $.ajax({ type: 'get', url: 'http://api.com/posts', dataType: 'json', success: function(data) { // do something } }) Actually everything works fine as long as both runs on the same IP, API and requesting JS. I already tried to play around with JSONP for Rack without any positive results, though. Probably I just need a hint how to proceed.

  • Python If Statement Defaults to an elif

    - by Brad Carvalho
    Not sure why my code is defaulting to this elif. But it's never getting to the else statement. Even going as far as throwing index out of bound errors in the last elif. Please disregard my non use of regex. It wasn't allowed for this homework assignment. The problem is the last elif before the else statement. Cheers, Brad if item == '': print ("%s\n" % item).rstrip('\n') elif item.startswith('MOVE') and not item.startswith('MOVEI'): print 'Found MOVE' elif item.startswith('MOVEI'): print 'Found MOVEI' elif item.startswith('BGT'): print 'Found BGT' elif item.startswith('ADD'): print 'Found ADD' elif item.startswith('INC'): print 'Found INC' elif item.startswith('SUB'): print 'Found SUB' elif item.startswith('DEC'): print 'Found DEC' elif item.startswith('MUL'): print 'Found MUL' elif item.startswith('DIV'): print 'Found DIV' elif item.startswith('BEQ'): print 'Found BEQ' elif item.startswith('BLT'): print 'Found BLT' elif item.startswith('BR'): print 'Found BR' elif item.startswith('END'): print 'Found END' elif item.find(':') and item[(item.find(':') -1)].isalpha(): print 'Mya have found a label' else: print 'Not sure what I found'

  • Help needed with simple mysql group by query

    - by Jack
    This query fails when I add the line shown... :BEGIN FAIL: I have this so far Select Companyid, count(*) as cnt from mytable where State is not null and cnt = 1 <------------------------- FAIL group by CompanyID :END FAIL: Any way to do this? Here's a long winded background if it'll help.... I have a single table query. here's a sample of the table: CompanyID, State 1,OH 1,IL 1,NY 2,IL 3,NY 3,OH 4,NY 5,CA 5,WA I want a query that'll return something like this: 2,IL 4,NY I have this so far Select Companyid, count(*) as cnt from mytable where State is not null group by CompanyID This gives me a count of the number of records for each company. IE: 1,3 2,1 3,2 4,1 5,2 Now I want to filter the above list to just the two records with one result. I tried adding another where clause, but it failed: BEGIN FAIL: I have this so far Select Companyid, count(*) as cnt from mytable where State is not null and cnt = 1 <-------------------- FAIL group by CompanyID END FAIL:

  • Regular Expression - Password Validation is not working

    - by Kesavan
    Hi, I have to validate the password using regex. The password rule is like at least 1 uppercase and at least 2 numeric. It works fine except if the character comes at the end of the string. The regular expression which i am using is "^(?=.*\d.{2})(?=.*[A-Z].{1})(?=.*[@#$%^&+=].{2}).{8,12}$" Rules: minimum length = 8 minimum uppercase = 1 minimum numeric = 2 minimum special character = 1 It works for Test123$$, Test$123, TEST123$s, Test123$1, Test12$3 but it fails if the character specified comes at the end of the string like Test123$, Test$a12, Test12aa@, 123aa@@T. Please let me know if there is any fix for this.

  • Python implementation of avro slow?

    - by lazy1
    I'm reading some data from avro file using the avro library. It takes about a minute to load 33K objects from the file. This seem very slow to me, specially with the Java version reading the same file in about 1sec. Here is the code, am I doing something wrong? import avro.datafile import avro.io from time import time def load(filename): fo = open(filename, "rb") reader = avro.datafile.DataFileReader(fo, avro.io.DatumReader()) for i, record in enumerate(reader): pass return i + 1 def main(argv=None): import sys from argparse import ArgumentParser argv = argv or sys.argv parser = ArgumentParser(description="Read avro file") start = time() num_records = load("events.avro") end = time() print("{0} records in {1} seconds".format(num_records, end - start)) if __name__ == "__main__": main()

  • Using jQuery in WordPress plugin admin page?

    - by Volmar
    I have a strange problem that probably have a really simple explanation that i've just havn't found. I'm making a WordPress plugin and i want to use jQuery in my settings-page for the plugin. My JS functions look like this: jQuery(document).ready(function() { alert('load test'); //ADMIN FUNCTION $('#mrc_imp_img').click(function(){ alert("test"); }); //FRONT END FUNCTION $("ul.mrc li").hover(function() { $(this).find('p').fadeIn(); } , function() { $(this).find('p').fadeOut(); }); }); The "load test"-alert is being loaded when the document is ready so jquery is properly loaded. The front end function is being used on pages and that's working fine to. the problem is the admin function, it's not working at all. is there a speial way i have to write a .click()-function to get it to work on my settings-page for the wordpress plugin?

  • Using Session State in Public Class in ASP.NET?

    - by davemackey
    I'm trying to move some reusable portions of code into a class. This is working okay except when I attempt to use Session within this class. I get an error: "Cannot refer to an instance member of a class from within a shared method or shared member initializer without an explicit instance of the class." My code looks something like this: Public Class webHousing Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Public Sub GetUserInfo() Dim x as String x = 10 Session("x")= x End Sub End Class I've simplified this code significantly - but the basic problem is present - trying to set a session value from within a class. I found the following MSDN article1 but don't believe Public/Shared can be used on Session?

  • Stop invalid data in a attribute with foreign key constraint using triggers?

    - by Eternal Learner
    How to specify a trigger which checks if the data inserted into a tables foreign key attribute, actually exists in the references table. If it exist no action should be performed , else the trigger should delete the inserted tuple. Eg: Consider have 2 tables R(A int Primary Key) and S(B int Primary Key , A int Foreign Key References R(A) ) . I have written a trigger like this : Create Trigger DelS BEFORE INSERT ON S FOR EACH ROW BEGIN Delete FROM S where New.A <> ( Select * from R;) ); End; I am sure I am making a mistake while specifying the inner sub query within the Begin and end Blocks of the trigger. My question is how do I make such a trigger ?

  • How does Ruby's Enumerator object iterate externally over an internal iterator?

    - by Salman Paracha
    As per Ruby's documentation, the Enumerator object uses the each method (to enumerate) if no target method is provided to the to_enum or enum_for methods. Now, let's take the following monkey patch and its enumerator, as an example o = Object.new def o.each yield 1 yield 2 yield 3 end e = o.to_enum loop do puts e.next end Given that the Enumerator object uses the each method to answer when next is called, how do calls to the each method look like, every time next is called? Does the Enumeartor class pre-load all the contents of o.each and creates a local copy for enumeration? Or is there some sort of Ruby magic that hangs the operations at each yield statement until next is called on the enumeartor? If an internal copy is made, is it a deep copy? What about I/O objects that could be used for external enumeration? I'm using Ruby 1.9.2.

  • Send and receive Array as GET/POST using querystring

    - by Vanwaril
    I've got the following code, but it doesn't seem to work: var post_req = { array: [ [ { param1: 'something', param2: 123 } ], [ ], [ ], [ { param2: 'something', param4: 1234, param1: 'hello' } ] ] }; var data_send = querystring.stringify(post_req); var request = client.request('POST', '/', headers); request.end(data_send); and if( req.method == 'POST' ) { req.addListener('data', function(chunk) { POST = querystring.parse(chunk); console.log(POST); } } I end up with 5 sub-arrays, corresponding to the 5 parameters in the objects but with extra '][' characters in their names: { array: [ { '][param1': 'something' } , { '][param2': '123' } , { '][param2': 'something' } , { '][param4': '1234' } , { '][param1': 'hello' } ] }

  • Measuring the time to create and destroy a simple object

    - by portoalet
    From Effective Java 2nd Edition Item 7: Avoid Finalizers "Oh, and one more thing: there is a severe performance penalty for using finalizers. On my machine, the time to create and destroy a simple object is about 5.6 ns. Adding a finalizer increases the time to 2,400 ns. In other words, it is about 430 times slower to create and destroy objects with finalizers." How can one measure the time to create and destroy an object? Do you just do: long start = System.nanoTime(); SimpleObject simpleObj = new SimpleObject(); simpleObj.finalize(); long end = System.nanoTime(); long time = end - start;

  • How to deal with name/value pairs of function arguments in MATLAB

    - by Richie Cotton
    I have a function that takes optional arguments as name/value pairs. function example(varargin) % Lots of set up stuff vargs = varargin; nargs = length(vargs); names = vargs(1:2:nargs); values = vargs(2:2:nargs); validnames = {'foo', 'bar', 'baz'}; for name = names validatestring(name{:}, validnames); end % Do something ... foo = strmatch('foo', names); disp(values(foo)) end example('foo', 1:10, 'bar', 'qwerty') It seems that there is a lot of effort involved in extracting the appropriate values (and it still isn't particularly robust again badly specified inputs). Is there a better way of handling these name/value pairs? Are there any helper functions that come with MATLAB to assist?

  • Resharper: how to force introducing new private fields at the bottom of the class?

    - by Igor Brejc
    Resharper offers a very useful introduce and initialize field xxx action when you specify a new parameter in a constructor like: Constructor (int parameter) The only (minor) nuisance is that it puts the new field at the beginning of the class - and I'm a fan of putting private parts as far away as possible from the prying eyes of strangers ;). If, however, you already have some private fields in the class, Resharper will put the new field "correctly" (note the quotes, I don't want to start a flame war over this issue) next to those, even if they are at the end of the class. Is there a way to force Resharper to always put new fields at the end of the class? UPDATE: OK, I forgot to mention I know about the "Type Members Layout in Options" feature, but some concrete help on how to modify the template to achieve fields placement would be nice.
