• User (MS-Office) generated content - how?

  How can I allow users to share Microsoft Office generated content on an ASP.Net site? For example usage, imagine a site similar to StackOverflow. George, writing a question, uses Word, Excel or OneNote to create content, and then inserts the content into the question area (probably copying it into the clipboard and then using some "paste from office" widget). Harry, who doesn't have MS-Office on his computer, can still see in his browser the content George has generate. If Harry wants to add content, he can use the built in editor, same like in Stackoverflow, and have to be satisfied with lesser functionality. Sue, who has MS-Office installed, can of course see the content in the browser just like Harry. In addition, she can "export" this content and process it in the application George used to generate it. So, how do I do it? Would Save/Export to HTML feature work? Any tools? Samples? Articles? Office 2007 or later is OK.

• Graphviz or Dynagraph for Graph-manipulation Program?

  I'm looking into writing a program that will show a graph to the user. The graph will change over time (the user should be able to right-click on a graph item and ask for more detail, which will pop out new bits of the graph), and the user might be able to drag parts of the graph around. I would ideally also like to be able to specify the relative layout of certain parts of the graph myself while leaving the overall layout up to a library, but that's not essential. I'm trying to decide on a graph layout library to use. As far as I can tell, the two leading candidates are Graphviz and Dynagraph. The Dynagraph website suggests that Graphviz is for drawing static graphs, and that Dynagraph was forked from Graphviz and contains algorithms for graphs that will be updated. It has a sample program called Dynasty that does exactly what I want. However, the Graphviz site contains an example program called Lefty which seems to do exactly what I want. Graphviz also seems to be much more widely used, judging by Google (and SO) results. Finally, I'd like to code the GUI part in a language like Python or Scheme, which makes me a bit hesitant to use C++ because I understand it's harder to interface that to interpreters. So my question is, which library is better for what I'm trying to do? Do they both have strong and weak points? Has one of them actually ceased development and is just leaving its website up to confuse me? (I've seen http://stackoverflow.com/questions/464000/simple-dynamic-graph-display-for-c and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2376987/open-source-libraries-to-design-directed-graphs, but I can't tell whether they're right about the Graphviz or Dynagraph choice because of Lefty and also the language issue.)

• WCF 3.5 - Remove SVC Extension - Special Case

  I have several RESTful endpoints like such: System.Security.Role.svc System.Security.User.svc etc. This is meant to be a namespace so our RESTful URL's would look like: /rest/{class namespace}/{actions} I have tried a few examples to get the SVC extension removed when my endpoint has multiple periods in it, however, nothing seems to work. I have tested with the WCF REST Contrib package (http://wcfrestcontrib.codeplex.com/), this example (http://www.west-wind.com/weblog/posts/570695.aspx), and another StackOverflow post (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/355165/how-to-remove-thie-svc-extension-in-restful-wcf-service). This works great when my endpoint is something like this: Echo.svc It will properly remove the SVC extension. Any ideas on how to handle endpoints with multiple periods in the endpoint name? EDIT: After some further testing, I found out that it is failing because whenever you do: string path = HttpContext.Current.Request.AppRelativeCurrentExecutionFilePath; If the endpoint contains multiple periods, it strips off everything after the endpoint causing all of the standard IHttpModule's to fail. Example: If I call http://localhost/services/Echo/test, my relative app file path has a returned value of: ~/echo/test However, if I make a call as http://localhost/services/System.Security.User/test, then my relative app file path has a returned value of: ~/system.security.user I am missing the '/test' on the end in that situation.

• Doubts About Core Data NSManagedObject Deep Copy

  Hello everyone, I have a situation where I must copy one NSManagedObject from the main context into an editing context. It sounds unnecessary to most people as I have seen in similar situations described in Stackoverflow but I looks like I need it. In my app there are many views in a tab bar and every view handles different information that is related to the other views. I think I need multiple MOCs since the user may jump from tab to tab and leave unsaved changes in some tab but maybe it saves data in some other tab/view so if that happens the changes in the rest of the views are saved without user consent and in the worst case scenario makes the app crash. For adding new information I got away by using an adding MOC and then merging changes in both MOCs but for editing is not that easy. I saw a similar situation here in Stackoverflow but the app crashes since my data model doesn't seem to use NSMutableSet for the relationships (I don't think I have a many-to-many relationship, just one-to-many) I think it can be modified so I can retrieve the relationships as if they were attributes for (NSString *attr in relationships) { [cloned setValue:[source valueForKey:attr] forKey:attr]; } but I don't know how to merge the changes of the cloned and original objects. I think I could just delete the object from the main context, then merge both contexts and save changes in the main context but I don't know if is the right way to do it. I'm also concerned about database integrity since I'm not sure that the inverse relationships will keep the same reference to the cloned object as if it were the original one. Can some one please enlighten me about this?

• Extract wrong data from a frame in C?

  I am writing a program that reads the data from the serial port on Linux. The data are sent by another device with the following frame format: |start | Command | Data | CRC | End | |0x02 | 0x41 | (0-127 octets) | | 0x03| ---------------------------------------------------- The Data field contains 127 octets as shown and octet 1,2 contains one type of data; octet 3,4 contains another data. I need to get these data. Because in C, one byte can only holds one character and in the start field of the frame, it is 0x02 which means STX which is 3 characters. So, in order to test my program, On the sender side, I construct an array as the frame formatted above like: char frame[254]; frame[0] = 0x02; // starting field frame[1] = 0x41; // command field which is character 'A' ..so on.. And, then On the receiver side, I take out the fields like: char result[254]; // read data read(result); printf("command = %c", result[1]); // get the command field of the frame // get other field's values the command field value (result[1]) is not character 'A'. I think, this because the first field value of the frame is 0x02 (STX) occupying 3 first places in the array frame and leading to the wrong results on the receiver side. How can I correct the issue or am I doing something wrong at the sender side? • Question about functional OOP style in JavaScript

  I prefer to use functional OOP style for my code (similar to the module pattern) because it helps me to avoid the "new" keyword and all problems with the scope of "this" keyword in callbacks. But I've run into a few minor issues with it. I would like to use the following code to create a class. namespace.myClass = function(){ var self = {}, somePrivateVar1; // initialization code that would call // private or public methods privateMethod(); self.publicMethod(); // sorry, error here function privateMethod(){} self.publicMethod = function(){}; return self; } The problem is that I can't call public methods from my initialization code, as these functions are not defined yet. The obvious solution would be to create an init method, and call it before "return self" line. But maybe you know a more elegant solution? Also, how do you usually handle inheritance with this pattern? • Error Log states that I have MySQL connect error, yet script runs fine

  Hello All, First, thanks for all the help I've received so far from StackOverflow. I've learned much. Once again, I'm posing a rudimentary question that I've searched on, but cannot find the exact answer to. Here or on PHP.net. It's sort of like what this guy asked, but not exactly: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/288603/mysql-throwing-query-error-yet-finishing-query-just-fine-why So, I saw my errorlog ballooning up when I checked my site directory and opened to notice that a bunch of errors have been recorded since I wrote this new Admin area. I know something is obviously awry with my scripting for the error to be thrown, but the weird thing is, the script actually runs through and pulls all the data I need without breaking. The log contains: PHP Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: Access denied for user 'someuser'@'localhost' (using password: NO) in /home/mysite/adminconsole.php on line 15 I don't get that because that very line is where I setup my connection... the exact same way I do it everywhere else on the site with no problem. After that error, I have these thrown at the same time [09-Apr-2010 08:44:18] PHP Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: A link to the server could not be established in /home/mysite/adminconsole.php on line 15 [09-Apr-2010 08:44:18] PHP Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/mysite/adminconsole.php on line 16 From what I read in the other guys thread, the problem is the contents of the query maybe? • How to migrate project from RCS to git? (SOLVED)

  I have a 20-year-old project that I would like to migrate from RCS to git, without losing the history. All web pages suggest that the One True Path is through CVS. But after an hour of Googling and trying different scripts, I have yet to find anything that successfully converts my RCS project tree to CVS. I'm hoping the good people at Stackoverflow will know what actually works, as opposed to what is claimed to work and doesn't. (I searched Stackoverflow using both the native SO search and a Google search, but if there's a helpful answer in the database, I missed it.) UPDATE: The rcs-fast-export tool at http://git.oblomov.eu/rcs-fast-export was repaired on 14 April 2009, and this version seems to work for me. This tool converts straight to git with no intermediate CVS. Thanks Giuseppe and Jakub!!! Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using <pages enableEventValidation="true"/> in configuration or <%@ Page EnableEventValidation="true" %> in a page. For security purposes, this feature verifies that arguments to postback or callback events originate from the server control that originally rendered them. If the data is valid and expected, use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation method in order to register the postback or callback data for validation. Let me start by saying that I don't know a great deal about the subject I am asking about. I have the following code [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Edit(PaymentInformation paymentInformationToEdit, int pensionFundID) { var originalPaymentInformation = (from PIs in _db.PaymentInformation where PIs.employeeNumber == paymentInformation.employeeNumber select PIs).First(); var laborUnion = (from LUs in _db.LaborUnion where LUs.laborUnionID = laborUnionID select LUs)First(); paymentInformationToEdit.laborUnion = laborUnion; _db.ApplyProperyChanges(originalPaymentInformation.EntityKey.EntitySetName, paymentInformationToEdit); _db.SaveChanges(); } I get an error when I try for the ApplyProperyChanges saying 'The existing object in the ObjectContext is in the Added state. Changes can only be applied when the existing object is in an unchanged or modified state'. I don't know how to change the state to either, or even if I am doing something fundamentally wrong. Please advice. EDIT: I hope this is the way to go here on stackoverflow. I haven't gotten an answer that solved my problem but Gregoire below posted a possible solution that I didn't understand. I hope this edit bumps my question so somebody will see it and help me. Sorry if this is not the way to go.

• Serializing MDI Winforms for persistency

  Hello, basically my project is an MDI Winform application where a user can customize the interface by adding various controls and changing the layout. I would like to be able to save the state of the application for each user. I would need to write some sort of a recursive algorithm to save all my controls, what is the best approach to do accomplish that? How would I then restore all the windows, should I use the memento design pattern for that? If I want to implement multiple users later, should I use Nhibernate to store all the object data in a database? I am still trying to wrap my head around the problem and if anyone has any experience or advice I would greatly appreciate it, thanks.

• Why doesn't this jQuery snippet work in IE8 like it does in Chrome/Firefox (live demo included)?

  I asked for help earlier on Stackoverflow involving highlighting spans with the same Class when a mouse hovers over any Span with that same Class. Here is a screenshot of it in IE8, with my mouse hovered over the " min) { min" section in the middle. As you can see, it highlighted the span that the mouse is hovering over perfectly fine. However, it has also highlighted some random spans above and below it that don't have the same class! Only the span's with the same Class as the one where the mouse is over should be highlighted green. In this screenshot, only that middle green section should be green. Here is a screenshot of it working properly in Firefox/Chrome with my mouse in the exact same position: This screenshot is correct as the span that the mouse is over (the green section) is the only one in this section that shares that class. Why is IE8 randomly green-highlighting spans when it shouldn't be (they don't share the same class) using my little jQuery snippet?   I recently learnt Python. I liked it. I just wanted to use it for web development. This thought caused all the troubles. But I like these troubles :) Coming from PHP world where there is only one way standardized. One common misleading idea is that mod_python is like mod_php, but for python. That is not true. So what is equivalent of mod_php in python? WSGI is some kind of optimized/improved inshort an efficient version specifically designed for python language only. In order to use this mod_wsgi is a way to go. right? This leaves out mod_python. What is it then? Apache - mod_fastcgi - FLUP (via CGI protocol) - Django (via WSGI protocol) Flup is another way to run with wsgi for any webserver that can speak FCGI, SCGI or AJP What is FLUP? What is AJP? How did Django come in the picture? These questions raise quetions about PHP. How is it actually running? What technology is it using? mod_php & mod_python what are the differences? In future if I want to use Perl or Java then again will I have to get confused? Kindly can someone explain things clearly and give a Complete Picture.

I need to get a cue banner to display for this ComboBox. I've attempted the solution that is (very verbosely) outlined in this blog post, but it will not work for a ComboBox with grouped data. The two solutions outlined in superfluousprefixhttp://stackoverflow.com/questions/2548757/how-can-the-blank-space-in-a-c-combobox-be-filled-as-a-hint-for-the-user are for Windows Forms ComboBoxes only, and won't work with WPF. • SQL Server Multi-statement UDF - way to store data temporarily required

  Hello, I have a relatively complex query, with several self joins, which works on a rather large table. For that query to perform faster, I thus need to only work with a subset of the data. Said subset of data can range between 12 000 and 120 000 rows depending on the parameters passed. More details can be found here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3054843/sql-server-cte-referred-in-self-joins-slow As you can see, I was using a CTE to return the data subset before, which caused some performance problems as SQL Server was re-running the Select statement in the CTE for every join instead of simply being run once and reusing its data set. The alternative, using temporary tables worked much faster (while testing the query in a separate window outside the UDF body). However, when I tried to implement this in a multi-statement UDF, I was harshly reminded by SQL Server that multi-statement UDFs do not support temporary tables for some reason... UDFs do allow table variables however, so I tried that, but the performance is absolutely horrible as it takes 1m40 for my query to complete whereas the the CTE version only took 40minutes. I believe the table variables is slow for reasons listed in this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1643687/table-variable-poor-performance-on-insert-in-sql-server-stored-procedure Temporary table version takes around 1 seconds, but I can't make it into a function due to the SQL Server restrictions, and I have to return a table back to the caller. Considering that CTE and table variables are both too slow, and that temporary tables are rejected in UDFs, What are my options in order for my UDF to perform quickly? Thanks a lot in advance.

Thats the weird part. Out of the 100 times I've logged in and out - I've experienced this problem 5-6 times and 2 of my beta test users have reported the same issue. So when it works- if u click the logout link - u get the facebook popup saying - you being logged out - when it does'nt work - absolutely nothing happens - the page does not refresh - it just sits on that page doing nothing. • Dojo dialog, the iPad and the virtual keyboard issue

  Recently, I have been working on a project where the interface should work for desktop and tablets (in particular the iPad). One issue I am coming across is with a Dojo dialog on the iPad when text entry is taking place. Basically here is what happens: Load Dojo interface with buttons on iPad - OK Press button (touch) to show dialog (90% height and width) - OK Click on text box (touch) like DateTextBox or TimeTextBox - OK, the virtual keyboard is opened Click the date or time I want in the UI (touch) - OK, but I can't see all of the options since it is longer than the screen size... Try to scroll down (swipe up with two fingers or click 'next' in the keyboard) - not OK and the dialog repositions itself to have it's top at the top of the viewport area. Basically, the issue is that the dialog keeps trying to reposition itself. Am I able to stop dialog resizing and positioning if I catch the window onResize events? Does anyone else have this issue with the iPad and Dojo dialogs? • php user authentication libraries / frameworks ... what are the options?

  I am using PHP and the codeigniter framework for a project I am working on, and require a user login/authentication system. For now I'd rather not use SSL (might be overkill and the fact that I am using shared hosting discourages this). I have considered using openID but decided that since my target audience is generally not technical, it might scare users away (not to mention that it requires mirroring of login information etc.). I know that I could write a hash based authentication (such as sha1) since there is no sensitive data being passed (I'd compare the level of sensitivity to that of stackoverflow). That being said, before making a custom solution, it would be nice to know if there are any good libraries or packages out there that you have used to provide semi-secure authentication? I am new to codeigniter, but something that integrates well with it would be preferable. Any ideas? (i'm open to criticism on my approach and open to suggestions as to why I might be crazy not to just use ssl). Thanks in advance. Update: I've looked into some of the suggestions. I am curious to try out zend-auth since it seems well supported and well built. Does anyone have experience with using zend-auth in codeigniter (is it too bulky?) and do you have a good reference on integrating it with CI? I do not need any complex authentication schemes..just a simple login/logout/password-management authorization system. Also, dx_auth seems interesting as well, however I am worried that it is too buggy. Has anybody else had success with this? I realized that I would also like to manage guest users (i.e. users that do not login/register) in a similar way to stackoverflow..so any suggestions that have this functionality would be great

• Why do child elements cause 'dropleave' to be called (drag-n-drop file upload)?

  I have a HTML5 drag-n-drop script that allows users to drop files in #droparea. The #droparea div has child elements that are also div elements. <div id="droparea"> <div id="showif_no_dragover">Drag files here!</div> <div id="showif_dragover">Drop the files!</div> </div> The associated javascript/jquery is: var droptarget = "#droparea"; $(droptarget).live('dragenter', dragEnter); $(droptarget).live('dragleave', dragExit); $(droptarget).live('dragover', nothing); $(droptarget).live('drop', dropGo); (Side question: should I use .live(), .on() or .bind() here?) I have created a sample jsFiddle with some additional code here: http://jsfiddle.net/PwFr9/3/ If you look at the console, you will notice that as you drag a file within #droparea, dragenter() and dragleave() are called multiple times, even though the drag is still inside #droparea. If you remove the child elements (#child1 and #child2), the problem is gone because the child elements are gone. How can I keep the child elements and prevent them from messing up the drag events? I have searched Stackoverflow and Google for hours without much help. I found this questions here at Stackoverflow: How to keep child elements from interfering with HTML5 dragover and drop events? I don't know why it works, though. I have tried placing 2 div elements on top of each other (via CSS positioning). The top-most div has the drag events attached whereas the bottom-most div has the child elements. I do not like this approach because it doesn't work with the rest of my page and does not allow mouse-click interaction with the bottom-most div. Any help is appreciated! Thank you in advance.   I asked for help earlier on Stackoverflow involving highlighting spans with the same Class when a mouse hovers over any Span with that same Class. Here is a screenshot of it in IE8, with my mouse hovered over the " min) { min" section in the middle. As you can see, it highlighted the span that the mouse is hovering over perfectly fine. However, it has also highlighted some random spans above and below it that don't have the same class! Only the span's with the same Class as the one where the mouse is over should be highlighted green. In this screenshot, only that middle green section should be green. Here is a screenshot of it working properly in Firefox/Chrome with my mouse in the exact same position: This screenshot is correct as the span that the mouse is over (the green section) is the only one in this section that shares that class. Why is IE8 randomly green-highlighting spans when it shouldn't be (they don't share the same class) using my little jQuery snippet? • RichEdit VCL and URLs. Workarounds for OnPaint Issues.

  So, issue is with the thing Delphi progies scare to death - Rich Edit in Windows ( XP and pre-XP versions ). Situation: I have added EM_AUTOURLDETECTION in OnCreate of form. Target - RichEdit1. Then, I have form, that is "collapsed" after showing form. RichEdit Control is sattic, visible and enabled, but it is "hidden" because form window is collapsed. I can expand and collapse form, using Button1 and changing forms Constraints and Size properties. After first time I expand form, the URL inside RichEdit1 control is highlighted. BUT - After second, third, fourth, etc... time I Collapse and Expand form, the RichEdit1 Control does not highlight URL anymore. I have tried EM_SETTEXTMODE messages, also WM_UPDATEUISTATE, also basic WM_TEXT message - no luck. It sems like this merssage really works ( enables detection ) while sending keyboard strokes ( virtual keycodes ), but not when text has been modified. Also - I am thinking to rewrite code to make RichEdit Control dynamic. Would this fix the problem? Maybe solution is to override OnPaint / OnDraw method to avoid highlight ( formatting ) losing when collapsing or expanding form? Weird is that my Embarcadero Documentation says this function must work in any moment text has been modified. Why it does not work? Any help appreciated. • How to get a fully transparent backbuffer in directx 9 without vista Desktop Window Manager

  I currently have an activex control that initiates a media (video/audio) framework another development group in my company developed and I am providing a window handle to that code. That handle is being used by their rendering plugin in the pipeline that uses Direct3d for rendering the video using that handle. I have seperate LPDIRECT3D9EX and LPDIRECT3DDEVICE9EX pointers that I initialize in my activex control. I am trying to clear a backbuffer to transparent and then use directx drawing primatives to draw on that backbuffer producing a transparent window with my drawing primatives over the streaming video on the directx surface below. It appears that clearing a device backbuffer with full alpha transparency is ignored by directx. d3ddev->Clear(0, NULL, D3DCLEAR_TARGET, D3DCOLOR_RGBA(0, 0, 1, 0 /*full alpha*/), 1.0f, 0); I can see the object I draw but they are drawn on top of a backbuffer that has the RGB color specified without the alpha value. The project linked (http://www.codeproject.com/KB/directx/umvistad3d.aspx) to in the stackoverflow question below does what I want but requires vista's Desktop Window Manager and won't work for XP. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/148275/how-do-i-draw-transparent-directx-content-in-a-transparent-window I have tried with D3DRS_ALPHABLENDENABLE true with configured blend with no avail. I have also tried to have pixels with full alpha values not rendered using D3DRS_ALPHATESTENABLE, D3DRS_ALPHAREF, and D3DRS_ALPHAFUNC setup but this doesn't work either. I have tried using ColorFill with alpha after retrieving the backbuffer with GetBackBuffer but this doesn't work either. (again only RGB is used) Finally I have tried creating a texture, selecting a surface, colorfilling that surface with a fully transparent alpha value, then loading that surface onto the backbuffer but only the RGB values appear to be used. I have checked the capabilities using the DXCapsViewer.exe and the D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8 backbuffer format that I am using for the backbuffer is valid so it can't be that. Has anyone gotten a transparent backbuffer in directx to work in XP?

• Predefined column names in SQL Server pivot table

  Hi, the other day I opened a topic here in StackOverflow (stackoverflow.com/questions/4663698/how-can-i-display-a-consolidated-version-of-my-sql-server-table). At that time I needed help on how to show data on a pivot table. From the help I got here in the forum, my research led me to this page about dynamic SQL: www.sommarskog.se/dynamic_sql.html. And then it led me to this awesome SQL script by Itzik Ben-Gan that will create a stored procedure that outputs a pivot table exactly the way I want: sommarskog.se/pivot_sp.sp. Well, almost. I need one change in this stored procedure. Instead of having dynamic column names pulled from the @on_cols variable in the SPROC, I need the output table to hold generic column names in simple ASC order. Could be, for example, col1, col2, col3, col4 ... The dynamic column names are a problem for me. So I need them named by their index in the order they appear. I have tried all sorts of things changing this great SQL script, but it won't work. I did not paste the code from the author because it is too long, but the link above will get us there. Any help appreciated. Thank you very much

• What is the best URL strategy to handle multiple search parameters and operators?

  Searching with mutltiple Parameters In my app I would like to allow the user to do complex searches based on several parameters, using a simple syntax similar to the GMail functionality when a user can search for "in:inbox is:unread" etc. However, GMail does a POST with this information and I would like the form to be a GET so that the information is in the URL of the search results page. Therefore I need the parameters to be formatted in the URL. Requirements: Keep the URL as clean as possible Avoid the use of invalid URL chars such as square brackets Allow lots of search functionality Have the ability to add more functions later. I know StackOverflow allows the user to search by multiple tags in this way: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/c+sql However, I'd like to also allow users to search with multiple additional parameters. Initial Design My design is currently to do use URLs such as these: http://example.com/search/tagged/c+sql/searchterm/transactions http://example.com/search/searchterm/transactions http://example.com/search/tagged/c+sql http://example.com/search/tagged/c+sql/not-tagged/java http://example.com/search/tagged/c+sql/created/yesterday http://example.com/search/created_by/user1234 I intend to parse the URL after the search parameter, then decide how to construct my search query. Has anyone seen URL parameters like this implemented well on a website? If so, which do it best?
