• essential reading for php coding (including databases)?

  Hello. I'm more of a SU and SF but now I'm after some help from the SO community. I'm dabbling in a bit of php coding with databases and am getting a bit stuck with relationships and the like. Can anybody reccomend some books, online or real, that would be a good start for someone new(ish) to php and mysql databases? Cheers!

  I'm using this handy Javascript function to decode a base64 string and get an array in return. • Remove never-run call to templated function, get allocation error on run-time

  First off, I'm a bit at a loss as to how to ask this question. So I'm going to try throwing lots of information at the problem. Ok, so, I went to completely redesign my test project for my experimental core library thingy. I use a lot of template shenanigans in the library. When I removed the "user" code, the tests gave me a memory allocation error. After quite a bit of experimenting, I narrowed it down to this bit of code (out of a couple hundred lines): void VOODOO(components::switchBoard &board){ board.addComponent<using_allegro::keyInputs<'w'> >(); } Fundementally, what's weirding me out is that it appears that the act of compiling this function (and the template function it then uses, and the template functions those then use...), makes this bug not appear. This code is not being run. Similar code (the same, but for different key vals) occurs elsewhere, but is within Boost TDD code. I realize I certainly haven't given enough information for you to solve it for me; I tried, but it more-or-less spirals into most of the code base. I think I'm most looking for "here's what the problem could be", "here's where to look", etc. There's something that's happening during compile because of this line, but I don't know enough about that step to begin looking. Sooo, how can a (presumably) compilied, but never actually run, bit of templated code, when removed, cause another part of code to fail? • What programming languages are good for statistics?

I know about R, but I'd kind of prefer something a bit more general-purpose (or is R pretty general-purpose?). What suggestions do you guys have? Are there any languages out there whose syntax/semantics are particularly oriented towards this? Or are there any languages that have exceptionally good libraries?

  We used to be a Coldfusion development shop before hopping over to PHP in 2008, now we primarily develop custom Drupal websites. I enjoyed going from CF to PHP, but I feel like I am getting a bit stale. I have been looking at different things like Ruby, Python, Obj C (iPhone). The problem is, there just isn't enough time in the day. What would be a fun new thing to learn that would refresh me a bit and challenge myself to learn more?

• How do I make vim indent java annotations correctly?

  When indenting java code with annotations, vim insists on indenting like this: @Test public void ... I want the annotation to be in the same column as the method definition but I can't seem to find a way to tell vim to do that, except maybe using an indent expression but I'm not sure if I can use that together with regular cindent. edit: The filetype plugin was already turned on I just got a bit confused about indenting plugins. The accepted answer may be a bit hackish but works for me as well.

  I'm getting the following line in the disassembly from objdump -d of an x86 linux program... 4000b0: ba 0e 00 00 00 mov $0xe,%edx I'm trying to understand how the machine code "ba 0e 00 00 00" maps to "mov $0xe,%edx" In the manual move immediate 32-bit is: B8 + rd ... MOV r32, imm32 ie "B8" not "BA" In fact none of the MOV opcodes are "BA". If someone could break down "ba 0e 00 00 00" and explain bit-wise how to get to "mov $0xe,%edx" it would be most helpful.

• Do I need to create icons other than RGBA for my Windows app?

  I'm curious if anyone still creates icons other than RGB/A (or 32-bit with alpha-channel) for your Windows apps? PS. I know that suggested model is to create 256-color versions of icons, but I always struggle with those. If I automatically convert them in an icon editor they totally decimate the look of my original icons with jagged edges and circa-Windows95 look. So if those are still required, does anyone know the stats on how many people are still using color settings other then 32-bit TrueColor?

• Default font in Eclipse on OSX is terrible (and blurred)

  Removing -Dorg.eclipse.swt.internal.carbon.smallFonts from eclipse.ini and changing the font to menlo seems to improve the situation a bit. However the font is still a bit unsharp, compared to Xcode. I don't see why they ship it like that or do they just don't care about the mac version?

  It happens at the same place in my code (albeit not the first time the method is executed) but I can't make head or tail of what is wrong. (Doubly so as it's code for a robot).
