  • Host website without domain name?

    I have an old desktop sitting around I wanted to try making a server out of, but I don't want to pay to register a Domain Name. Is there a way I can host a website without a domain name, or to register a domain name for free? If I can't host a web page without a domain name, can I just access the files on the server through the internet some how without a domain name? Thanks for any insight!

    Although a good tool OpenDB hasn't been updated since 12/2008. The source code shows some recent activity, but still sparse at best. Anyone know of good web based cataloging alternatives? I'm looking to catalog the 500+ software CD's we have. Also, as a side note. OpenDB will handle software, but you have to create a custom media type, which is a PAIN!!!

  • What file or directory is unique to Plesk and unlikely to change in the future?

    I am writing a program that needs to be able to detect the presence of various web hosting control panels. I don't use Plesk, or have access to a server running Plesk, so I am unable to ascertain what file or directory I could test for to reliably conclude that the system is running Plesk. What file or directory indicates "Yes, this has Plesk installed" that is unlikely to ever change in the future, but would be present on all versions of Plesk out in the wild? Thanks in advance :)

    I have a number of scheduled tasks which simply open a web page in Windows Server 2008 R2. They used to run and end without abending, but now they open and stay open and I have to setup the task to quit them by force before their next scheduled run. I've thought about installing CURL or WGET, but is there a way to do this with R2 without going to that step? Regards.

    What options are available to load balance web service traffic on Linux with the ability to add or remove servers from the server pool without restarting the load balancer? This post: http://serverfault.com/questions/71437/mod-proxy-change-without-restart looks like a very promising way to switch between two servers, but I don't know enough about mod_proxy and mod_rewrite to understand how/if I can use an external file to specify the BalancerMember entries for a section. Are there other open source load balancers that support reconfiguration without restart?

    I have purchased a domain name for my blog, and I'd like to use [email protected] as my email address. I have a Linux (Ubuntu 13.10) VPS that's running the LAMP stack. I would like to install some software that would include spam filtering, email delivery, etc, but would be simpler to maintain than something like this (possibly hundreds of steps, and a lot of maintenance headaches too I suppose). I would also require a web interface at mail.mydomain.com - but I suppose that Roundcube is an option

  • Do I need a hardware firewall for Win 2003?

    We have had a Win 2003 server at a co-lo for a while. It is used as a web server and has a very cheap hardware firewall between it and the internet. Ports 3389 and 80 are the only ones forwarded to the server. I am doing some upgrading and wondering if I really need the firewall. Are there any drawbacks to just using the Win 2003 built in firewall to make sure only traffic on 3389 and 80 get through?

    I'd like my web app to be able to accept direct messages via twitter. My app won't be sending our any spam, in fact it won't send out any messages at all.     I have a web site I visit. When I click a link, the link is something like: a.com/something/blah.php Then moments later the url in the browser changes to something like: a.com/somethingelse/blahblah.php Is there a way with any browser (especially firefox) to have it ask me before redirecting? I have tried the 'ask me before redirecting' feature in firefox but in this case since it redirects to its own site it does not seem to work.

However, I just got Firefox and I was wondering how I can change the hotkey so that it opens Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.     From time to time I want to copy and paste a portion of a web document (viewed in both IE Explorer 7 and 8) into MS Word 2007. The selected text copies and pastes fine, but I am left with only place holders for the images (png). Right clicking the image and clicking copy, then pasting into MS Word doesn't work either. If I paste the image into MS Paint and copy it from there, I can paste it into the Word document. What gives?

    When I try to start Chrome Web Browser, "User Account Control" window opens and ask whether I give permission to this application to make changes in my computer. I give the permission, Chrome opens but could not connect to the Internet. There is no error in the opened page. But when I try to connect to internet via IE, it works. I've been experiencing this issue since yesterday, I was able to use Chrome before.

    Our websites are being crawled by content thieves on a regular basis. We obviously want to let through the nice bots and legitimate user activity, but block questionable activity. We have tried IP blocking at our firewall, but this becomes to manage the block lists. Also, we have used IIS-handlers, however that complicates our web applications. Is anyone familiar with network appliances, firewalls or application services (say for IIS) that can reduce or eliminate the content scrapers?

  • Web server freezing or taking too long to load page sometimes

    This is happens once in a while, but sometimes when I try to load a web page from my server it just freezes there for a minute trying to load it. I'm not sure what's causing the issue, or have been able to recreate it. My guess is that one of the softwares I listed below is freezing or something.     We're building a web service that will be deployed on an IIS 7.5 farm, and secured through SSL, and also requiring client certs that will be mapped to Active Directory accounts. My understanding is that the server cert needs to be generated for a specific server. If that is the case then we will need a server cert for each server in the farm. Because the farm will be load balanced, how do we generate client certs that will work with any of the servers in the farm?
