  • Can you apply noatime on Ext3 partitions at realtime?

    - by bzero
an application accesses a disk directory containing about 3 million files (including directories). I would like to apply the noatime option for that filesystem and I would like to know whether I can do that while applications are running and accessing that filesystem. the command I'd apply would look like this: mount -o remount, noatime / Any experience with that? I run one single application using the file system, and it is a 100% Java application (1 JVM running). Ubuntu Version: 9.10 (Karmic) Thanks!

  • Gnome-Shell 3.4 Themes not working in 12.04?

    - by CGriffitt
Even themes advertised as Gnome-shell 3.4 compatible have graphical issues on Gnome-Shell 3.4. The main thing is that the text is black and nearly invisible, and the icons in the applications screen are crowded and in some cases overlapping. The themes did not do this before upgrade, and the default doesn't do it now. I am using user theme extension, and the themes I have tried are the Ambiance-Color set and London Smoke (both of which are advertised as 3.4 compatible).

  • IPv6, isn't it just a few extra bits?

    - by rclewis
It's always an interesting task, to try and explain what you do to family and friends. I have described IPv6 as the "Next Generation Internet"  or "Second Internet" but the hollow expressions on my kids faces scream for the instant relief of the latest video game.  Never one to give up easily, I have formulated a new example - the Post Office... Similar to the Post Office the Internet delivers mail and packages based on addresses. As the number of residences, businesses, and delivery locations increased, the 5 digit ZIP Code (Washington, DC 20005) was expanded to ZIP+4  allowing for more precise delivery points (Postmaster General, Washington, DC 20260-3100). Ah, if only computers were as simple.  IPv6 isn't an add-on or expansion of the existing IPv4 Addressing, it is a new addressing model which will allow the internet to grow from a single computer in the basement of a university or your parents kitchen table, to support the multitude of smart phones, smart TV's, tablets, dvr's, and disk players, all clambering to connect for information. Unfortunetly there are only a finite number of IPv4 public addresses left, and those are being consumed at an ever increasing rate. Few people could have predicted the explosive growth of the internet or the shortage of IPv4 addresses we now face - but there is a "Plan B" and that is the vastly larger address space of IPv6.  Many in the industry have labeled this a "business continuity" problem,  when in fact most companies will be able to continue conducting business once they run out of existing IPv4 Addresses. The problem is really a Customer Continuity problem, how will businesses communicate with existing customers and reach new customers online who's only option is to adopt IPv6 when IPv4 is depleted? Perhaps a first step is publishing a blog that is also accessible via IPv6, it's just a few extra bits. • Continuous integration for Ubuntu Phone?

    - by Klax
Is there any kind of framework that lets a controlling PC automate the flashing of a connected phone, waiting for the phone to boot and then tell it to download and execute tests from a repository? I know about Autopilot for applications, but I'm more interested in CI of boot loaders, drivers and platform stuff. A related question: Is there a global repository of tests for Ubuntu Phone? Best regards

  • Learn Less, Do more! Is that true with PHP or ASP.NET?

    - by mallieem saleie
When comparing PHP and ASP.NET, I find that in ASP.NET with Visual Studio you can do things quickly with help of the IDE and the available controls. However, they say that it does not take much time to learn PHP as in asp.net. I want to reach to a point where I can understand which one will I learn quickly? Which one will help me in producing more results (I mean more web applications) if I learned both in 3 months time.

  • Multitasking or Tombstoning and Isolated Storage in Windows Phone 7

Windows Phone 7 manages multiple active applications by implementing a stack. In a sense, this application stack extends the page stack within a single Silverlight program. You can think of the phone as an old-fashioned web browser with no tab feature and no Forward button. But it does have a Back button and it also has a Start button, which brings you to the Start screen and allows you to launch a new program.
