• Web Platform Installer issues deploying Azure SDK 1.4 on refreshed systems.

  Recently I have been doing quite a bit of testing on different means to deploy the Azure SDKs and such. After a very successful couple of systems, I started running into issues last night. Here is the problem, if I go to the Windows Azure Website, and go to Develop, then click on the SDK and Tools, then Get Tools & SDK, it launches the Web Platform Installer.  All seems well at that point, except it will go through the initial process, will find the SDK files for 1.4, but since the tools for Visual Studio are still 1.3, the location throws back a 404, which causes the Installer to fail.  NOTE:If you already had SDK 1.3 and the tools in place, it will go through. • Why does nothing work after I randomly changed some file permissions?

  Ok so last night i was trying to set permissions to some folders in my File System, since apparently im not an admin on my own computer. And now everything got messed up today and i don't know what to do.. I lost my internet, the icon is not showing in the taskbar anymore. I lost my sound, there is no sound devices listed when i go into the sound menu. I can not log into root anymore, it gives me "sudo: must be setuid root" I can not plug anything in anymore, it will not recognize flash drives or external hard drives. It gives me a Internal Error message everytime i log in It doesn't let me log into the Grub screen anymore on boot up. What did i do? I have a lot of files on here i wish to put on a flash drive but it won't recognize it.

• Unbuntu stuck at boot after update

  Well, I installed Ubuntu 11.10 via Wubi on my MSI U270. Everything was running fine, I even got fglrx working after I manually downloaded a .run and executed it. Then I thought of running the complete updates that were on the update manager. I did run it, it took a whole night to complete, I waited a bit as the part came where I had to click on "Restart now". I clicked it, after that I'm stuck at the purple screen with all dots lighted orange. I've been waiting for it to start up for more than half an hour, and there used to be occasional HDD blinks which isn't happening now. Should I reboot? Edit: After the restart not while restarting, forgot to mention that and by the way, is there a way to see anything that's happening just so I know that it ain't stuck?

• after login, the desktop remains blank.

  Hi, I have installed Ubuntu 10 last night and finished all upgrading stuff, in the time when updates are applied I downloaded a torrent file. As soon as download is finished I rebooted my system. As usual at start up it asked my login and I did the same. After a successful login It should show me the desktop, or show an error message in case anything has gone wrong. But what I had is only a cursor and a blank wall paper. Can anybody tell me what is the problem and how to resolve this? Thanks

• 12.04 server on home network

  I need advice to help me with a server install, I'm new to ubuntu and linux in general. I have 6 systems in my house, 5 being windows 7 and this laptop that I am typing on is Linux mint 13 Maya. Question is, my wife will not transition to anything. She is stuck in Gates-land. so, can I make a server with ubuntu 12.04 (burnt disc image last night) so that all systems in my home can access and my mother-in-law in another state can also access with a username? That would be awesome and it may convince the war dept (my wife) to change all the systems in my house to ubuntu/linux. Sorry this is so long winded, but all the questions I have seen on this forum don't answer it completely.

• Why does everyone dislike PHP? [closed]

  I'm primarily a Java/Python programmer, but I just picked up an entry-level job doing web development. I had to learn PHP, and several of my CS friends told me that it would stunt my coding ability/be terrible to program in/murder me in the middle of the night. So far, there have been annoying moments with the language (one particular thing that bugs me is the syntax for calling functions...), but nothing living up to the statements of my friends. I still haven't learned very much about the language. Is their hate justified? Why or why not? A few quotes I've seen about PHP: Haskell is faster than C++, more concise than Perl, more regular than Python, more flexible than Ruby, more typeful than C#, more robust than Java, and has absolutely nothing in common with PHP.   I'm trying to figure out how to find out if there's a good standard format for sharing business information such as: Business Name Address - well-defined fields Lat,Lng Coords Business Type - maybe from a well-defined enum, my starting point contains Retail,Food,Drink,Coffee,Service Hours of operation - including a spot for 'except laksdasd' or 'sometimes we open late' which could be just plain language Business Keywords - don't know if this is asking too much. how well do http meta tags work in practice? • Sync ERROR!! LOST MY WORK!

  Sorry my English... hope you understand me... I had a document. Edited it yesterday. But today, when i open it, it was desync. It show an one month earlier version!! I LOST A LOT OF WORK!! And i can't recover my right version of the document! I have a paid plan for Ubuntu One, but this made me very angry. And i don't see a way to recover and don't see a way to talk to somebody! There's no recovery mode like Dropbox... Man, i'm really ANGRY!! REALLY! I'll not recomend Ubuntu One services anymore! I don't know what to do... I lost my work and now i'm one month late! • Skeptic in a Scrum Team

  My company has recently switched to an Agile way of working and as a part of it we've started using SCRUM. While I'm very comfortable with it and feel that this way is superior to a traditional one, some of my teammates don't share the same opinion. In fact they are very skeptical about "all that agile stuff", and don't take it seriously. As an example, one of the teammates is always late on the meetings, and doesn't really care about it. The management IMO tries not to notice this (maybe because it's new, and it takes time for the people to get used to it). My question is, how to address this issue while not raising a conflict inside the team?

• upgrade from ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 failed, now loads "grub rescue"

  I attempted to upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 last night. Installation seemed to go fine, and this morning I had a message like "restart now to complete installation". So I restart, get an initial "Loading Operating System ..." message, followed by "error: file not found. Then it kicks into "grub rescue" mode. Previously I have this running as a dual boot (window 7) and I just ran the upgrade to 12.10 via the update manager in ubuntu. Any ideas on what is going on here, or what the error means? I know my way around the command line, but this is above my pay grade. Thanks for any advice.

• Switching my legacy desktop back to Windows XP from Windows 7

  I was happy with Windows 7 at the beginning, until I started to add in the peripherals.  Windows 7 was never able to recognize any of my PCI video card (I know, I know, we should be in the DVI age). Anyway, I went through another 4 days of trouble setting my computer up with dual monitor in XP (also did a bunch of other things like getting rid of my sound card and taking the computer off RAID. Kind of feel stupid to put the computer on RAID in the first place because now I can have 2 drives: double the page files program seems to run faster Microsoft Sync toy 2.1 takes care of my backup needs (Thank god they solved the network drive issue) As of last night, the system is running beautifully.  I still have a laptop with Windows 7, but even that is in dual boot mode.

• IIS 6 nested virtual directory redirection

  We're running IIS 6 on a WinServer2k3 box and we're having some trouble with the following problem: E-mails were sent out to users asking them to go to the following URL: alias.contoso.com/directory2/view.aspx?queryparam1=no&queryparam2=blue However, the URLS are actually supposed to be: server.contoso.com/directory2/view.aspx?queryparam1=no&queryparam2=blue It's too late to recall all of the e-mails, and we'd like to redirect traffic to make this as seamless as possible for our users. The real problem here is that the server (server.contoso.com) is hosting the alias (alias.contoso.com) as a redirect thusly, and the existing redirect we need to keep functional: Default Web Site (server.contoso.com) --Directory1 --Directory2 --Directory3 Redirection to Directory3 (alias.contoso.com) --Essentially alias.contoso.com will take the user to server.contoso.com/Directory3 Is there any way to host a separate redirect inside of the existing redirect? We need to keep alias.contoso.com taking the user to server.contoso.com/Directory3 but also make alias.contoso.com/directory2/view.aspx?queryparam1=no&queryparam2=blue point to server.contoso.com/directory2/view.aspx?queryparam1=no&queryparam2=blue Any tips? Is this even possible?

• Network strange problem

  I have a CPanel server with 5 IPs and a few domains. During night, access to main domain through HTTP return 324 no response many times. After several refresh it comes but many assets won't load and return 324. Using HTTPS is fine. During day HTTP is also fine. But another domain on that very sever works fine all the day through HTTP. The server DNS are ns1 and ns2 of the first domain. Second domain is on the shared IP and first domain has a dedicated IP. I cant resolve the problem :( and appreciate any help so much!

• Visual Studio 2010 - Faster Startup with /nosplash

  I read a blog the other day about the /nosplash switch in Visual Studio. Apparently, it's been around a while and I'm a little late on finding out about it. I figured I'd share it for those of you that come across this and didn't know about it as well. Basically all it does is turn off the Visual Studio splash screen which speeds up initial startup time. It's not a big difference but every little bit helps. I choose speed over looks. You can set the switch by right clicking on Visual Studio, selecting Properties, and adding "/nosplash" on the target Property, so it will look like this: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" /nosplash. Feel free to try it out and see if you like it. You can always change it back by just removing the /nosplash switch when you're done testing. There are plenty more Visual Studio switches out there but this is the main one that came in handy for me.   - Mike

• How can I superscript a single character throughout my site?

  Finishing up development work for a client and they have a late request to superscript every occurrence of the &reg character throughout the site. I merely get by with CSS, but not even sure CSS provides the best solution here. how can I make a global change to every occurrence of a single character in the site copy without going back and adding tags everywhere? if the best solution does involve inserting a span or other tag I'm thinking it could be accomplished with a database query (all the copy is wired up to a CMS).

• Windows 7 won't boot

  I installed Ubuntu from my live CD and chose to install it alongside Windows. Yesterday, everything worked just fine and I was able to boot from either OS. However today, only Ubuntu will boot and Windows 7 fails to start every time I attempt to (even after restoring my Windows 7 partition to the last known good date). What could have changed over night that caused this? I did install all the recommended updates for Ubuntu. Is my only option going to be to wipe my HDD and reinstall both Windows and Ubuntu?

• Unable to boot OS X after installing Ubuntu 12.04

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my MB (aluminium late 2008). After installing Ubuntu I am unable to boot into OS X. Sequence of events: Install reFit on OS X Install Ubuntu on a partitioned drive. I also installed grub. Now when I boot my MB only the grub menu shows up. When I select OS X under grub I see a black screen for a while and the machine restarts (when selecting OS X 64 bit) or it hangs indefinitely(OS X 32 bit). Could you please help? • Is age a factor when looking for internships? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is it ever too old to learn how to become a programmer? I'm 30 years old going back to school for a 2nd degree in Computer Science. I will be transferring to my local state university this fall and would like to know if my age will be a factor when applying for internships. I have already read a few threads about age and careers: Is it too late to start your career as a programmer at the age of 30? Does it matter that you started developing at 26? While it is reassuring to know that people are getting entry-level programming jobs at 30+, what about internships? Should I even bother with bigger companies like Google, Microsoft, or Apple? I know we have laws against age-discrimination but lets not pretend we live in a perfect world where everyone follows the rules.
