• How do I make solr/jetty find the installed slf4j jars in Ubuntu 12.04?

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04's packaged Jetty in which I installed solr 4.3.1 (by copying the war file to /var/lib/jetty/webapps. When I start Jetty, I get this error: failed SolrRequestFilter: org.apache.solr.common.SolrException: Could not find necessary SLF4j logging jars. If using Jetty, the SLF4j logging jars need to go in the jetty lib/ext directory. The package libslf4j-java is installed, and the jars are in /usr/share/java: /usr/share/java/log4j-over-slf4j.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-api.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-jcl.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-jdk14.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-log4j12.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-migrator.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-nop.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-simple.jar but somehow, Jetty and/or Solr are not finding them. How do I make them find them? or how do I install some other jars where jetty/solr would find them? But I only have access to Ubuntu 12.04 near me, there is LibreOffice available under Ubuntu as well, but I am used to type math formulas in LaTex. So I wonder how to provide math formulas that will work in Microsoft Office and MathType, if I work under Ubuntu, preferably with LaTex but LibreOffice being also acceptable since it is still under Ubuntu? • Super Joybox 5 HID 0925:8884 not recognized as joystick in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  Problem: When using the "Super JoyBox 5" 4 port playstation 2 to USB adapter, the device is not recognized as a joystick. there is no js0 created, but instead another input eventX and mouseX are created in /dev/input. When using the directional buttons (up down left right) on a Playstation 1 controller attached to the device, the mouse cursor moves to the top, bottom, left, and right edges of the screen respectively. Buttons are unresponsive. The joypads attached to the device cannot be used in any games or other programs. Attempted remedies: Creating a symlink from the eventX to js0 does not solve the problem. Addl Info: joydev is loaded and running peroperly according to LSMOD. evtest can be run on the created eventX (sudo evtest /dev/input/event14 in my case) and the buttons and axes all register inputs. Aparently, this device used to work flawlessly on kernel 2.4.x systems, and even as late as ubunto 10.04. Perhaps the Joydev rules for identifying joypads has changed? Currently, this kind of bug is affecting a few different type of controller adapters, but since this is the one that i PERSONALLY have (and has been driving me my own special brand of crazy), its the one im documenting. What i think should be happening instead: The device should be registering js0 through js3, one for each port, or JS0 that will handle all of the connected devices with different numbered axes for each connected joypad. Either way, it should work as a joystick and stop controlling the mouse cursor. Please help!

• Why did Ubuntu suddenly get so slow?

  12.10 has been slowing down mysteriously. Normally, in past versions, I can log in, open Firefox, and it will pop up within seconds. 12.10 is like that upon install too, though once I install my old apps, it gets very slow by Ubuntu standards. After login the hard drive will just make noise for a while before the OS will do anything. • Boot Ubuntu from a bootable USB hangs on purple screen

  I recently bought a laptop (Lenovo Y410P) with Windows 8 pre-installed and I'm trying to dual boot Windows 8 and Ubuntu 13.0. I created a bootable usb using Pendrive. Then I changed the Boot Mode to Legacy Support and the boot order so it boots from the flash storage first. When I restarted the computer, I got the error message "SYSLINUX 4.06 EDD 2012-10-23 Copyright (c) 1994-2012 H. Peter Anvin et al" and it just hung there. Fair enough. After some googling I formatted my flash drive in FAT format instead of FAT32. The "SYSLINUX..." error message is gone but now it hangs on a purple screen http://imgur.com/WbdXpZN Does anyone have a suggestion what to do here? I've looked at various posts but none of them seems to have a solution that the author confirmed it worked.

  I've been having some issues with my RAID setup recently on my headless Ubuntu 10.04 server which means one of my mount requests is failing on bootup. Clearly I need to fix the RAID issue, but this machine is in my loft and having to crawl up there with a keyboard just so I can hit S a few times is extremely irritating. The exact message is as follows: The disk drive for /drv/photos is not ready yet or not present Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery I'd still like Ubuntu to try and mount it, but is there any way to tell it not to wait for the device?

• Is it possible to boot already installed version of Ubuntu from within Win7, e.g. with a vm?

  I have both Ubuntu 12.10 and Win7 installed. I use the former mostly for scientific simulations and the latter for applications. The problem I came across with this configuration is that the simulations take quite a while, and I'm not satisfied enough with solutions like Wine to run the Windows apps while the simulation runs. I would rather not install the simulation programs again, since it took quite an effort. So, is it possible to boot the already installed version of Ubuntu from within Windows 7 via VirtualBox or or something else?

When I googled this problem, I found that lsb-core package needs to be installed. But the package is having many dependencies, I want to know how to install lsb-core package with all the necessary dependencies. I followed the directions as detailed here here, however, and it works up to expected speeds, but after within an hours time, the wifi disconnects and the only way to solve the issue is to either reboot OR disable wireless and re-enable it. lsmod | grep cfg80211 outputs: cfg80211 178818 2 b43,mac80211 I suspect that I did not blacklist the correct driver and there are two drivers causing instability, however I have no idea if I actually did it correctly.

  I have recently had windows XP die on one of my machines, and have installed Linux UBUNTU. The OS works great, except for installing the Xerox Phaser 3160N printer. The OS can find and install the network printer, but when I print a test page, it tells me “Internal Error – Please use the correct driver”. I have the correct drivers, as your support team have sent me the link, (http://www.support.xerox.com/support/phaser-3160/file-download/enau.html?operatingSystem=linux&fileLanguage=en_GB&contentId=105724&from=downloads&viewArchived=false) but I cannot install these drivers to run the printer. These are the instructions from the online guide for installing on a Linux machine: 1. Make sure that the machine is connected to your network and powered on. Also, your machine’s IP address should have been set. 2. Insert the supplied software CD into your CD-ROM drive. 3. Double-click CD-ROM icon that appears on your Linux desktop. 4. Double-click the Linux folder. 5. Double-click the install.sh icon. 6. The Xerox Installer window opens. Click Continue. 7. The Add printer wizard window opens. Click Next. 8. Select Network printer and click Search button. 9. The Printer’s IP address and model name appears on list field. 10. Select your machine and click Next. I get as far as step 5, and step 6 never happens, if it did, it would be very easy from there. There are options to add additional software to UBUNTU, however it does not recognise the installation CD as valid when I try to add it as a source.   I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my MacBook Pro 9,1 Mid 2012 non retina 15 inch. I installed the 4 drivers from this link https://launchpad.net/~mactel-support/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=precise but still I can't get wireless or bluetooth to work. Even adaptive brightness I think isn't working. Can anyone suggest where to get the complete set of drivers? P.s. Additional drivers says no proprietary devices found which is weird.

The scan reported a vulnerability in apache 2.2.22 (Apache HTTP Server Zero-Length Directory Name in LD_LIBRARY_PATH Vulnerability).The report states to upgrade the version to the latest stable release of either 2.2.23 or 2.2.24. How do I upgrade to the 2.2.23 to fix the vulnerability or is there a patch available that can fix this and if yes can you let me know how that can be patched.

  Ubuntu's password management used to be working just fine for me, but around two weeks ago after running apt-get upgrade, I've noticed that now it keeps "forgetting" my passwords. For instance, I need to manually enter passwords to unlock my ssh keys to use git, which previously was done automatically on login. My workplace's 802.11x authentication also no longer works, I need to manually re-auth just to connect to internet. What's going on?
