  • New hard drive for backup? [closed]

    I have come to realize that I need another external drive to use with my MacBook Pro. I currently have a 1TB WD MyBook Essential that I have been using for about a year and a half. I have it currently partitioned into two drives, one for backup (I named it Leonov) and one for movies, TV shows and other large files I don't need very often (I call that side Discovery One). I use Time Machine for backups since it is completely automated and I can restore from it without much trouble (I have had to at least three times now). As of now, Leonov is full enough that every backup deletes an old one and Discovery One is approaching it's limits. I would like to get a new drive and move one of the sides to it. What are some reliable, external (~1TB) drives for under or around $100? Would it be easier to move the movies (et al.) or the backups to the new drive? I also feel like I should say that all of my important documents (for school and the like, just not my music) are also synced to Dropbox as another form of backup and access.

  • Trying to delete a directory stored on a WIndows server, mounted on a mac

    I am trying to delete a directory stored on a Windows 2008 R2 server, mounted on a Mac as network home (10.8.5). The directory was created by Safari and stores temporary internet files. I need to be able to delete this folder on logout from a Mac bash script. The Terminal on Mac shows the directory as empty: 36W-FacRm-02:History lwickham$ cd /home/lwickham/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/History 36W-FacRm-02:History lwickham$ ls -al total 0 drwx------ 1 lwickham CGPS\Domain Users 264 Nov 8 09:24 . drwx------ 1 lwickham CGPS\Domain Users 264 Nov 8 09:28 .. However, on the Windows server it has a single 0kb file that doesn't start with a "." but yet is invisible to the Mac.   • Dash (-) in directory listing

    I've Googled around for this to no avail, I'm sure its just something simple but I have not been able to figure this out perhaps because searching in Google or SF for a "-" can be problematic. I had a strange directory listing show up the other day in my git repository within Drupal. The other strange this is this entry does not show up for any other user browsing this same directory. Nor does it show up for other users period in their Git directories. The entry cannot be removed via RM. Running Centos 6.2 by the way...

  • Shell not finding binary when attempting to execute it (it's _definitely_ there)

The same happens either as user james or as root. Nor is it directory specific; if I move the whole directory installation, or just a single binary, to anywhere else, the same happens when attempting to execute it. The same even happens when I put the directory in $PATH and just execute "GutenMark". It also happens when I execute it from a script (I've tried Python's commands module -- though this appears to just call sh). The problem appears to be specific to the binaries themselves, yet they appear to never actually get executed. Any ideas?

What could have caused such strange permissions (500) and how can i set it back to an normal level (555) ?   • Extremely high mysqld CPU usage with no active queries

    I have a VPS running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with LEMP stack, followed the guide from Linode Library (since I'm using a Linode) to setup, and everything worked fine until now. I don't know what's wrong, but my CPU usage just goes up since a week ago. Today things getting really bad - I got 74% CPU usage so I went check and found that mysqld taking too much CPU usage (somewhere around 30% ~ 80%) So I did some Google Search, tried disable InnoDB, restart mysql, reset ntp / system clock (Isn't this bug supposed to happen more than a year ago?!) and reboot my VPS, nothing helped. Even with mysql processlist empty, I still get mysqld CPU usage very high. I don't know what I missed and have totally no idea, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.   • How to avoid sshfs freezing?

    So the issue is this: I've installed sshfs on Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm trying to connect to a couple of remote servers. So initially the mount seams successful. Sometimes Gnome even picks it up and displays the "new device found" box at the bottom of the screen. but from here on there is not much that works. Or at least not any more. The first couple of times i connected it seamed to work fine, and I was able to transfer some files, then i disconnected using fusermount -u <folder> and after reconnecting a little later the trouble started. Now after executing sshfs -o ServerAliveInterval=15 -o reconnect -C -o workaround=all -o idmap=user root@<host>:/ <folder>, when I change directory into the mount-point, the shell just freezes. Strangely ls -al <folder> works when listing just the root of the remote system, but nothing more. Also every file-explorer I've tried freezes just like cd <folder>. To me it seamed like there was some kind of zombie thread or something hanging around my system, due to the fact that it did work the first time, so I have tried rebooting but no luck. sshfs -V gives this: SSHFS version 2.3 FUSE library version: 2.8.6 fusermount version: 2.8.6 using FUSE kernel interface version 7.12 So yea, any ideas?

  • Converting flv and mp4 video format to '.ogg' using FFmpeg

    I have HostGator VPS server with FFmpeg installed. It allows me to convert .wmv to .flv as well as .mp4 files successfully using the following commands for flv and mp4: ffmpeg -i WantsABath.wmv -b 600k -r 24 -ar 22050 -ab 96k WantsABath.flv ffmpeg -i WantsABath.wmv WantsABath.mp4 but it won't allow me to convert any file format to .ogg. I tried using the command: ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -acodec libvorbis -vcodec libtheora -f ogv output.ogv by mondain but no luck with it. I am doubting that my VPS doesn't have libtheora installed. I tried configuring it by using SSH but I don't know how to make sure if it is installed or not. I tried checking with php_info but can't find anything regarding libtheora.   • Fresh install CentOS 6.4 64b with directadmin slowly consumes all memory and crashes

    Dear server fault community, This is my first question on server fault, i'm new to server (mis)configuration so please forgive me for asking something stupid :) I'm running Directadmin on a CentOS 6.4 64b with 4GB memory and over 10000Gh virtual machine. I migrated my websites because my former vps couldn't keep up anymore. Only half of the websites from this 1GB machine were migrated jet. So the migration is still in progress and already my server crashes every day. The server performance up until that moment is perfect. The directadmin log files show nothing out of the ordinary. Yesterday only the mysql server crashed but it also crashed the entire machine before. The memory usage in DA seems to be normal: directadmin directadmin (pid 3923 22158 22159 22160 22161 22162 )8.75 MB dovecot dovecot (pid 3851 ) 47.8 MB exim exim (pid 1350 ) 1.29 MB httpd (pid 21525 21528 21529 21530 21531 21532 21546 21571 21742 21743 21744 )490.4 MB mysqld mysqld (pid 1299 ) 287.8 MB named named (pid 3807 ) 16.3 MB proftpd proftpd (pid 1481 ) 1.91 MB sshd sshd (pid 1173 21494 ) 5.16 MB Restarting services immediately frees up memory, but slowly over time the memory usage increases(about 24 hours to crash). The commands: # sync # echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches Will free al memory correct. I could just create a cronjob but it seems the wrong way around to me. I can't seem to pinpoint the cause. Any advices, references or tips are highly appreciated!     The title is a little confusing. I'll elaborate. As far as I can tell, the Google Docs Viewer tool accepts a link to a raw document file (e.g. .doc, .pdf, et. al.), and renders its contents in the browser. For example, this url to a pdf http://research.google.com/archive/bigtable-osdi06.pdf when passed to Viewer, returns this link: http://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fresearch.google.com%2Farchive%2Fbigtable-osdi06.pdf What I'm trying to achieve is, use the Viewer to view a document already hosted in Google Docs (i.e. no longer a raw document file). When passing a link to a Google Docs document to the Viewer, the result is not as expected. It renders the link's HTML source instead of the document's contents. The reason I want to do this is that I want to be able to use the "embed" feature of Viewer to view Google Docs documents. Does Google Docs have a "link to embeddable view" feature? P.S. Here is a sample snippet to an embedded document.     I am trying to delete a directory stored on a Windows 2008 R2 server, mounted on a Mac as network home (10.8.5). The directory was created by Safari and stores temporary internet files. I need to be able to delete this folder on logout from a Mac bash script.   • How to make a redundant desktop system with daily snapshots? (Is btrfs ready for use?)

    I want to configure a desktop system in which the home filesystem would be redundant (e.g. RAID-1), and would have weekly snapshots taken. I've already done this with ZFS, the snapshot system is wonderful, and with send/recv you can easily create backups on external media. Unfortunately, at that point, I want GNU+Linux and not FreeBSD or Solaris, so I'm looking for suggestions for good alternatives. I reckon that my alternatives are: btrfs - it seems to be exactly what I need, it has snapshots and commands that allow you to easily replicate zfs send. Yet all documentation mentions that it's still experimental. I can't seem to find any actual reports on its reliability or usability issues. Can you point me to any information on that issue that could clarify whether it would be a possible choice? I have a large preference for this option, mostly because I don't want to reformat the drives when btrfs becomes ready, but I there's no information on whether it's usable at all, whether it's a silly idea to use it, etc. The question that I cannot get the answer to is what does "experimental" mean. lvm snapshots and ext4 - preferably not, since it can consume an awful amount of space when new files are created. Creating 200 GB files requres 200 GB free space and 200 GB additionally for snapshots. I also have found it unreliable -- failed metadata rewrite results in an unreadable PV. I'm wondering how btrfs would compare here. A single filesystem (ext4) on a RAID-1 array with custom COW snapshots with hardlinks (like cp -al). That's my current preference if I can't use btrfs. So how experimental btrfs is, which should I choose, and do I have any other options? What if I don't keep external incremental backups, would that affect my choice?

    People have been lurking near my house, asking me to write something about Moles and JustMock, so I’ll try to be as objective as possible, taking in the fact that I work at Typemock. If I were NOT working at Typemock I’d write: JustMock JustMock tries to be Typemock at so many levels it’s not even funny. Technically they work the same and the API almost looks like it’s a search and replace work based on the Isolator API (awesome compliment!), but JustMock still has too many growing pains and bugs to be usable. Also, JustMock is missing alot of the legacy abilities such as Non public faking, faking all types and various other things that are really needed in real legacy code. Biggest thing (in terms of isolation integration) is that it does not integrate with other profilers such as coverage, NCover etc.) When JustMock comes out of beta, I feel that it should cost about half as Isolator costs, as it currently provides about half the abilities. Moles Moles is an addon of Pex and was originally only intended to work within the Pex environment. It started as a research project and now it’s a power-tool for VS (so it’s a separate install) Now it’s it’s own little stubbing framework. It’s not really an Isolation framework in the classic sense, because it does not provide any kind of API built in to verify object interactions. You have to use manual flags all on your own to do that. It generates two types of classes per assembly: Manual Stubs(just like you’d hand code them) and Mole classes. Each Mole class is a special API to change and break the behavior that the corresponding type. so MDateTime is how you change behavior for DateTime. In that sense the API is al over the place, and it can become highly unreadable and unmentionable over time in your test. Also, the Moles API isn’t really designed to deal with real Legacy code. It only deals with public types and methods. anything internal or private is ignored and you can’t change its behavior. You also can’t control static constructors. That takes about 95% of legacy scenarios out of the picture if that’s what you’re trying to use it for. Personally, I found it hard to get used to the idea of two parallel APIs for different abilities, and when to choose which. and I know this stuff. I would expect more usability from the API to make it more widely used. I don’t think that Moles in planning to go that route. Publishing it as an Isolation framework is really an afterthought of a tool that was design with a specific task in mind, and generic Isolation isn’t it. it’s only hope is DEQ – a simple code example that shows a simple Isolation API built on the Moles generic engine. Moles can and should be used for very simple cases of detouring functionality such a simple static methods or interfaces and virtual functions (like rhinomock and MOQ do).   Oh, Wait. Ah, good thing I work at Typemock. I won’t write all that. I’ll just write: JustMock and Moles are great tools that enlarge the market space for isolation related technologies, and they prove that the idea of productivity and unit testing can go hand in hand and get people hooked.     Para iniciar hablaremos un poco sobre el control File Upload, de esta forma daremos una idea general de que es y como trabaja. El File Upload es un control de asp.net que permite que los usuarios seleccionen un archivo de cualquier ubicación en el equipo y lo suban a un directorio predeterminado a traves de una página asp.net. En principio este control esta limitado para no permitir subir archivos de mas de 4 MB. Sin embargo, desde el webconfig de nuestra aplicacón podremos cambiar ese valor, ya sea para aumentarlo o bien para disminuirlo. Nuestro ejemplo, se enfocará en crear un webcontrol que permita seleccionar un archivo y guardarlo, asi que empecemos.   • Sector bancario, un reto de transformación tecnológica

    El sector financiero se encuentra en un momento clave. No sólo por la coyuntura económica actual, sino también por cuestiones estructurales y normativas que obligan a las entidades bancarias -normalmente a la cabeza de la innovación tecnológica, por cierto- a seguir dando pasos hacia el futuro, manteniendo la tecnología en el corazón de su estrategia de negocio. Así se ha puesto de manifiesto en el encuentro que se ha celebrado hoy en Madrid: Oracle in Banking, donde expertos de Oracle, clientes de la compañía y analistas han puesto sobre la mesa algunos de los desafíos a los que se enfrenta el sector e ideas para aprovechar al máximo la tecnología en la resolución de estos desafíos. El evento ha sido todo un éxito, con asistencia masiva de clientes y partners. En la imagen que ilustra este artículo pueden verse, por este orden: una panorámica de la sala, Modesto Villajos, Regional Sales Manager de Oracle, quien ejerció de maestro de ceremonias. Leopoldo Boado, Country Manager de Oracle España, quien realizó la introducción, Alex Kwiatkowski, de IDC, quien expuso los prinicipales desafíos a los que se enfrenta la banca, y Máximo Díez, Senior Director Financial Services de Oracle, que planteó las diferentes estrategias de transformación que pueden emprender los bancos. El evento se completó con intervenciones de clientes de Oracle (Banco Espírito Santo -BES- de Portugal; y BBVA, de España), y presentaciones y demostraciones técnicas.  De particular interés fue la intervención de Alex Kwiatkowski. De acuerdo con su punto de vista hay cuatro áreas esenciales a las que se enfrenta el sector. La primera de ellas es el marco regulatorio. El sector financiero está sometido a una constante presión normativa (probablemente acrecentada en estos tiempos de incertidumbre), no sólo a nivel nacional, sino también a nivel europeo y global. El cumplimiento exquisito de todas estas normas es esencial para el buen funcionamiento del sistema. La segunda área crítica es la necesidad de ofrecer una experiencia de usuario multicanal satisfactoria, de forma que se potencie la retención de clientes. A veces es difícil darnos cuenta, pero hoy en día nuestras interacciones con el banco han alcanzado una gran diversidad de canales (sucursal, ATM, Internet, banca telefónica, banca móvil...). Esto supone un permanente desafío tecnológico y de procesos para las entidades financieras. El tercer elemento crítico es el del incremento de la eficiencia de las operaciones, manteniendo los costes bajo control o incluso reduciéndolos aún más. Por último, las entidades bancarias tienen ante sí el reto de encontrar nuevas fuentes de ingresos, de forma que el foco deje de estar únicamente en la reducción de costes y la minimización de riesgos. Lo cierto es que en la actualidad, la atención principal se centra en estos dos puntos, pero como mencionó Alex Kwiatkowski "los CIO`s de los bancos se van a plantar en la mesa del CEO con la necesidad de realizar renovaciones completas de los sistemas de core banking y la necesidad de invertir en el desarrollo de nuevos canales". Máximo Díez también enfatizó esta necesidad en su presentación. Los bancos tienen la obligación de econtrar nuevas fórmulas para impulsar el crecimiento, pero la implementación de estrategias en este sentido presenta fuertes desafíos a causa de las limitaciones de los sistemas IT existentes. No hay duda de que se presenta un futuro muy interesante en el ámbito tecnológico para el sector financiero.
