• Lubuntu upgrade to 13.04 killed sound with ALSA. How to troubleshoot?

  After upgrading to 13.04 from 12.10 Lubuntu lost audio playback after unplugging usb soundcard (Polycom) and plugging it back in. Volume control was gray and leading to pulseaudio mixer (not installed) so I uninstalled the pulseaudio package. I also removed and reinstalled the alsa-base package. UPDATE: I removed the usb soundcard and got rid of all alsa config. Everything is working as before the install but it sure feels fragile.

• Convert old AVI files to a modern format

  Hi, we have a collection of old home videos that were saved in AVI format a long time ago. I want to convert these files to a more modern format because the Totem Movie Player that comes with Ubuntu 10.4 seems to be the only program capable of playing them. The files seem to be encoded with a MJPEG codec, and playing them in VLC or Windows Media Player plays only the sound but there is no video. Avidemux was able to open the files, but the quality of the video is severely degraded: The video skips frames and is interlaced (it's not interlaced when playing it in Totem). Neither ffmpeg nor mencoder seems to be able to read the video stream. mencoder reports that it is using ffmpeg's codec.   Prologue In previous chapters we have seen how to insert data through EF, with and without sequences. In this one, we are going to see how to Update and delete Data from the DB. Updating data The update of the Entity Data (properties) is a very common and easy action. Before of change any of the properties of the Entity, we can check the EntityState property, and we can see that is EntityState.Unchanged.   For making an update it is needed to get the Entity which will be modified. In the following example, I use the GetEmployeeByNumber to get a valid Entity: 1: EMPLEADOS emp=GetEmployeeByNumber(2); 2: emp.Name="a"; 3: emp.Phone="2"; 4: emp.Mail="aa"; After modifying the desired properties of the Entity, we are going to check again Entitystate property, which now has the EntityState.Modified value. To persist the changes to the DB is necessary to invoke the SaveChanges function of our context. 1: context.SaveChanges(); After modifying the desired properties of the Entity, we are going to check again Entitystate property, which now has the EntityState.Modified value. • Come up with a real-world problem in which only the best solution will do (a problem from Introduction to algorithms) [closed]

  EDITED (I realized that the question certainly needs a context) The problem 1.1-5 in the book of Thomas Cormen et al Introduction to algorithms is: "Come up with a real-world problem in which only the best solution will do. Then come up with one in which a solution that is “approximately” the best is good enough." I'm interested in its first statement. And (from my understanding) it is asked to name a real-world problem where only the exact solution will work as opposed to a real-world problem where good-enough solution will be ok. So what is the difference between the exact and good enough solution. Consider some physics problem for example the simulation of the fulid flow in the permeable medium. To make this simulation happen some simplyfing assumptions have to be made when deriving a mathematical model. Otherwise the model becomes at least complex and unsolvable. Virtually any particle in the universe has its influence on the fluid flow. But not all particles are equal. Those that form the permeable medium are much more influental than the ones located light years away. Then when the mathematical model needs to be solved an exact solution can rarely be found unless the mathematical model is simple enough (wich probably means the model isn't close to reality). We take an approximate numerical method and after hours of coding and days of verification come up with the program or algorithm which is a solution. And if the model and an algorithm give results close to a real problem by some degree that is good enough soultion. Its worth noting the difference between exact solution algorithm and exact computation result. When considering real-world problems and real-world computation machines I believe all physical problems solutions where any calculations are taken can not be exact because universal physical constants are represented approximately in the computer. Any numbers are represented with the limited precision, at least limited by amount of memory available to computing machine. I can imagine plenty of problems where good-enough, good to some degree solution will work, like train scheduling, automated trading, satellite orbit calculation, health care expert systems. In that cases exact solutions can't be derived due to constraints on computation time, limitations in computer memory or due to the nature of problems. I googled this question and like what this guy suggests: there're kinds of mathematical problems that need exact solutions (little note here: because the question is taken from the book "Introduction to algorithms" the term "solution" means an algorithm or a program, which in this case gives exact answer on each input). But that's probably more of theoretical interest. So I would like to narrow down the question to: What are the real-world practical problems where only the best (exact) solution algorithm or program will do (but not the good-enough solution)? There are problems like breaking of cryptographic ciphers where only exact solution matters in practice and again in practice the process of deciphering without knowing a secret should take reasonable amount of time. Returning to the original question this is the problem where good-enough (fast-enough) solution will do there's no practical need in instant crack though it's desired. So the quality of "best" can be understood in any sense: exact, fastest, requiring least memory, having minimal possible network traffic etc. And still I want this question to be theoretical if possible. In a sense that there may be example of computer X that has limited resource R of amount Y where the best solution to problem P is the one that takes not more than available Y for inputs of size N*Y. But that's the problem of finding solution for P on computer X which is... well, good enough. My final thought that we live in a world where it is required from programming solutions to practical purposes to be good enough. In rare cases really very very good but still not the best ones. Isn't it? :) If it's not can you provide an example? Or can you name any such unsolved problem of practical interest?

• Asp.Net MVC2 RenderAction changes page mime type?

  It appears that calling Html.RenderAction in Asp.Net MVC2 apps can alter the mime type of the page if the child action's type is different than the parent action's. The code below (testing in MVC2 RTM), which seems sensible to me, will return a result of type application/json when calling Home/Index. Instead of dispylaying the page, the browser will barf and ask you if you want to download it. My question: Am I missing something? Is this a bug? • Web application development platform recommendation

  Hi all I did a year's worth of Pascal, Visual Basic and C++ 15 years ago, so suffice it to say that I'm a complete n00b & lamer when it comes to this. I really do hope that this question doesn't canned, but if it does, please be so kind as to point me in the direction of where it should be posted. I have an idea, like so many others, for a web app. I don't necessarily have the capital to outsource the development of the app right now, and I probably wouldn't want to, since non-disclosure agreements can be expensive to enforce, especially in this day and age of intercontinental outsourcing. I need the app to be usable on any mobile device (eventually), primarily on the major mobile platforms at first, on the web, (pc/mac/*ix) obviously, on mobile web browsers like opera mobile, etc. I envisage the app interacting with the major social networks like fb, orkut, msn im, twitter, et al in a way where friend's are messaged and/or wall posted, a message is posted to the users wall. Geo-location functionality is a plus, considering the service/app can be location sensitive in two ways, 1, the immediate location of the user, 2. the desired location of the user. I'd like to incorporate OpenID sign on, and the flip-side, the service will require that people (service providers) list their specialities/specialisations/interests/areas of expertise, so that matches to user requests can be made by the service, while users' requests are posted into the web universe. I've probably described a glut of apps out there, but I'd appreciate feedback on the sort of platform that I should look at using, be it hosted on something like Google's app engine, or written in android friendly code, or whatever. I'm a firm believer in herd mentality, especially at the start of a project that I have very little experience in. The more opinions, the merrier!   I am currently programming a Visual C# service to receive emails from various sources then I take certain info and organize it in a database using Regex to retrieve the deferent cell values (such as header, body, problem, cost, etc.etc.). My problem is that I am currently using a Hotmail account to email the service which the service then extracts data and writes it to a csv file; however this is all going fine an dandy except for the fact that the text is formated so when there is a "\n" or something of the sort, the program decides to not input the data that follows that into the cell. • Attached event triggering if event is same as current event

  I have a button which start/stops a timer. When I click it, I remove the current event handler, and attach the opposite one. Ie, click "Stop", and the "Start" function is attached for the next click. However in IE (7), not sure about 8. The newly attached event is also triggering after the original function is finished: Lifeline in IE7: Button pushed -- "Stop" function begins -- "Stop" function removed -- "Start" function attached -- "Stop" function finishes -- "Start" function is called. I know it's to do with the attaching event bit, because If I remove it, the Start event doesn't fire. This seems a bit odd, as I have the same situation in the "Start" function, ie, "Start" removed, "Stop" called. • NSOperationQueue bug with dependencies

  I am using NSOperation and NSOperationQueue for performing a sequence of operations, all dependent on each other (2 on 1, 3 on 2, etc...). I set the dependency after I create the operations. I am encountering problems when the queue completes: the program crashes in the _release part of the code, apparently when the NSOperations are getting released. Note that they all get released at the end by the queue, because it is only after the very last one which depends on the second last one, which depends on etc... that they can be released. If I remove any dependency, the code runs fine. If I change waitUntilFinished: to NO, it crashes, if it is YES, it does not. I have isolated the problem to the following code which does not use any of my custom classes. NSOperation by default is a class that does absolutely nothing. Yet, this still crashes when all operations have completed. Therefore, it appears I am not using NSOperationQueue properly but can't see what is wrong. I am running on 10.9 and I have noticed that in general Maverick 10.9 is much more sensitive to these issues than 10.8. • Cannot connect Linux XAMPP PHP to SQL Server database.

  I've searched many sites without success. I'm using XAMPP 1.7.3a on Ubuntu 9.1. I have used the methods found at http://www.webcheatsheet.com/PHP/connect_mssql_database.php, they all fail. I am able to "connect" with a linked database through MS Access, however, that is not an acceptable solution as not all users will have Access. The first method (at webcheatsheet) uses mssql_connect, et.al. but I get this error from the mssql_connect() call: Warning: mssql_connect() [function.mssql-connect]: Unable to connect to server: [my server] in [my code] [my server] is the server address, I have used both the host name and the IP address. [my code] is a reference to the file and line number in my .php file. Is there a log file somewhere that would have more information about the failure, both on my machine and SQL Server? We do not have a bona-fide DBA, so I will need specific information to pass on if the issue seems to be on the server side. All assistance is appreciated, including RTFM when the location of the M is provided! Thanks

  I have a Moose class that i would like to store using Apache::Session::File. However, Apache::Session::File by default will not store it and instead i get the error message: (in cleanup) Can't store CODE items at blib\lib\Storable.pm (autosplit into blib\lib\auto\Storable\_freeze.al)... This problem can be circumvented by setting $Storable::Deparse = 1; $Storable::Eval = 1; in order to allow CODE references to be serialized.   Hi, I'm writing a genetic programming (GP) system (in C but that's a minor detail). I've read a lot of the literature (Koza, Poli, Langdon, Banzhaf, Brameier, et al) but there are some implementation details I've never seen explained. For example: I'm using a steady state population rather than a generational approach, primarily to use all of the computer's memory rather than reserve half for the interim population. Q1. In GP, as opposed to GA, when you perform crossover you select two parents but do you create one child or two, or is that a free choice you have? Q2. In steady state GP, as opposed to a generational system, what members of the population do the children created by crossover replace? This is what I haven't seen discussed. Is it the two parents, or is it two other, randomly-selected members? I can understand if it's the latter, and that you might use negative tournament selection to choose members to replace, but would that not create premature convergence? (After a crossover event the population contains the two original parents plus two children of those parents, and two other random members get removed. Elitism is inherent.) Q3. Is there a Web forum or mailing list focused on GP? Oddly I haven't found one. Yahoo's GP group is used almost exclusively for announcements, the Poli/Langdon Field Guide forum is almost silent, and GP discussions on general/game programming sites like gamedev.net are very basic.   The Background I've built a source list (similar to iTunes et al.) in my Cocoa app. I've got an NSOutlineView, with Value column bound to arrangedObjects.name key path of an NSTreeController. The NSTreeController accesses JGSourceListNode entities in a Core Data store. I have three subclasses of JGSourceListNode - JGProjectNode, JGGroupNode and JGFolderNode. I have selectedIndexPaths on NSTreeController bound to an NSArray called selectedIndexPaths in my App Delegate. How would I do this elegantly?

• Alternative Python standard library reference

  I love Python; I absolutely despise its official documentation. Tutorials do not count as library references, but that appears to be what they're attempting. What I really want is the ability to find a class in the standard library and view documentation for all of its properties and methods. Actionscript, MSDN, and Java all do this just fine (although each with their odd quirks). Where is this for python? For example, I wanted to sort a list. mylist.sort(). Awesome. But what if I wanted it sorted in descending order? Official documentation is not - much - help. Or what if I wanted to specify a key function? That's also supported: mylist.sort(key=lamba item: item.customVar)- but documented...where? I understand that Python's approach to OOP may not be equivalent to Java et. al. Maybe list isn't actually a class - maybe it's just a function that returns an iterable when the tachyon beams are set to glorious and the unboxed hyper enumeration is quantized, but...I don't care. I just want to know how to sort lists. (Apologies for the angst - too much caffeine today)

• Cannot connect Linux XAMPP PHP to MS SQL database.

  I've searched many sites without success. I'm using XAMPP 1.7.3a on Ubuntu 9.1. I have used the methods found at http://www.webcheatsheet.com/PHP/connect_mssql_database.php, they all fail. I am able to "connect" with a linked database through MS Access, however, that is not an acceptable solution as not all users will have Access. The first method (at webcheatsheet) uses mssql_connect, et.al. but I get this error from the mssql_connect() call: Warning: mssql_connect() [function.mssql-connect]: Unable to connect to server: [my server] in [my code] [my server] is the server address, I have used both the host name and the IP address. [my code] is a reference to the file and line number in my .php file. Is there a log file somewhere that would have more information about the failure, both on my machine and the MS SQL server? We do not have a bona-fide DBA, so I will need specific information to pass on if the issue seems to be on the server side. All assistance is appreciated, including RTFM when the location of the M is provided! Thanks
