• How to run boot loader in VMWare?

  I am using Ubuntu as a virtual machine in VMWare. I have used this code to write a boot loader which would write Hello world on the screen. [BITS 16] [ORG 0x7C00] MOV SI, HelloString CALL PrintString JMP $ PrintCharacter: MOV AH, 0x0E MOV BH, 0x00 MOV BL, 0x07 INT 0x10 RET PrintString: next_character: MOV AL, [SI] INC SI OR AL, AL JZ exit_function CALL PrintCharacter JMP next_character exit_function: RET HelloString db 'Hello World', 0 TIMES 510 - ($ - $$) db 0 DW 0xAA55 I wrote this code in the text editor in Ubuntu and saved the file as Boot.asm Then I compiled the Boot.asm to boot.bin file by using this command nasm -f bin -o boot.bin Boot.asm and it didn't gave me any errors. After that I copied the boot.bin file to my usb and took it to my Windows OS. After this I burned the boot.bin file to boot.img and boot.iso files. Then I created a new virtual machine and named it booter, when it asked for the .iso file of the OS I want to run I gave it the boot.iso file, about which I told above, then I powered on that virtual machine but it gave me this error PXE-M0F: No boot filename received PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM Operating System not found Please tell me what is the main problem and how can I overcome that problem.

• How do I Set PATH in /etc/profile.d?

  I'm using zsh as my shell, and I'm trying to configure my environment. I usually define my $JAVA_HOME variable by creating a file: /etc/profile.d/java.sh with the following content export JAVA_HOME=/path/to/jdk export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH then I logout and back in, and it all works, but for some reason the PATH variable is not set. It recognizes JAVA_HOME, but not the new PATH, see this terminal snippet: ~ echo $JAVA_HOME /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.8.0_05 ~ echo $PATH /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/games and I confirmed it by trying to run a command form the jvm ~ java -version zsh: command not found: java the PATH doesn't include the $JAVA_HOME as it should. is there something else I should check? EDIT I have checked that if I run source /etc/profile.d/java.sh it all runs correctly and my variables get set as they should, but shouldn't the scripts in /etc/profile.d run automatically?

I am trying to set up R and with it the necessary java dependencies to install e.g. JGR, rjava, etc. I read through quite a few instructions to do that but somehow I must have done sth wrong.   I am very new to CGI programming in Perl. In order to learn it i installed xampp 2 days back. But I am unable to execute my perl code . I checked the apache configuration file under : xampp/apache/conf/httpd.conf. I checked the entry : ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ "C:/xampp/cgi-bin/" It looks like pointing to the correct directory. What is the issue here can anyone help please???

• arm-none-ebai-gcc does not work from mounted directory

  I want to build project for ARM micro controller. For this purpose in folder with project was placed script, which download toolchain and build him. After run this script toolchain was placed in folder with project. Folder with project placed on another logical disk (which shared between Win and Linux) and this disk is mounting each time when I start develop. (Mount by hand). When I start make, in terminal I receive error: make[3]: arm-none-eabi-gcc: Command not found The output from echo $PATH: /mnt/Smoothie-master/gcc-arm-none-eabi/bin:/usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games The output from whereis arm-none-ebai-gcc: arm-none-ebai-gcc: All binaries files, which are relating to this toolchain are placed in the next directory: /mnt/Smoothie-master/gcc-arm-none-eabi/bin/ and has permissions: "-rwxrwxrwx" Before building this toolchain, I had another similar toolchain (another version of this), but installed through apt-get. And it was removed through apt-get before building new. Where is the problem? Thanks!

  I'm attempting to get gltail set up on my local system to monitor logs remotely. I've got all the dependencies installed, but when I go to run gltail ... ./gl_tail configfile ../config.yaml I get this output: Missing gem net-ssh. Ubuntu: sudo gem install -y net-ssh -r .. which I've done a number of times. The problem is if I do java -version I get... OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11.1) (6b24-1.11.1-4ubuntu3) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b12, mixed mode) How do I make the official jdk version the right one? • How can I remove duplicate icons for "launched" java programs in the launcher?

  When launching java programs (like IntelliJ IDEA and Crashplan) in Natty's Unity launcher, duplicate icons are shown (see image). For IntelliJ I created the .desktop file, for Crashplan the .desktop file is supplied with the application. Is there something that can be changed in the .desktop files (or somewhere else) that can prevent this from occurring? I couldn't find a bug report for unity itself but programs like Gnome-Do/Docky have bug reports and had to make internal changes to their applications to prevent this. In this image the 1st icon is the one created from the .desktop file and the second icon is after launching it. Second icon disappears when closing the application.   I've setup a script to do Subversion updates across two servers - the localhost and a remote server - called by a post-commit hook run by the www-data user. /srv/svn/mysite/hooks/post-commit contains: sudo -u cli /usr/local/bin/svn_deploy /usr/local/bin/svn_deploy is owned by the cli user, and contains: #!/bin/sh svn update /srv/www/mysite ssh cli@remotehost 'svn update /srv/www/mysite' To get this to work I've had to add the following to the sudoers file: www-data ALL = (cli) NOPASSWD: /usr/local/bin/svn_deploy cli ALL = NOEXEC:NOPASSWD: /usr/local/bin/svn_deploy Entries for both www-data and cli were necessary to avoid the error: post commit hook failed: no tty present and no askpass program specified I'm wary of giving any kind of elevated rights to www-data. Is there anything else I should be doing to reduce or eliminate any security risk?

  Using github for the first time. In terminal I receive this error git: command not found If I type in terminal which git it returns nothing. If I type which github it returns /usr/local/bin/github Github's command line utility seems to be installing a github but not a git. echo $PATH returns /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin. Currently do not have a .bash_profile or .profile. Not sure if that is significant. Am a command line and $PATH rookie but am determined to learn. Mac OS version 10.6.8 and Github version 1.2.8. Therefore I created two policies to run the application via pkexec (one for /usr/bin and one for /opt/extras... ) and added them to the setup.py: data_files=[('/usr/share/polkit-1/actions', ['data/com.ubuntu.pkexec.armorforge.policy']), ('/usr/share/polkit-1/actions', ['data/com.ubuntu.extras.pkexec.armorforge.policy']), ('/usr/bin/', ['data/armorforge-pkexec'])] ) additionally I added a startscript which uses pkexec for starting the application. It distinguishes between the two places and is used in the Exec-Statement of the desktopfile: #!/bin/sh if [ -f /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/armorforge/bin/armorforge ]; then pkexec "/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/armorforge/bin/armorforge" "$@" else pkexec `which armorforge` "$@" fi If I simply do a quickly package everything will work right. My application is for communicating with apparmor which currently has no dbus interface. Else I need to write into /etc/apparmor.d-folder. • Trouble installing Java

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I wanted to install Java and so I downloaded the 32-bit self extracting .bin file from http://www.java.com and tried to install it according to their instruction. First I made the file an executable one. Then created /usr/java/. After that I have to run this command: ./jre-7u<version>-linux-i586.bin. But I'm stuck here. My Java version is Java 6 u32. When I enter the command it says "no such file or directory". What to do? Please help. Also I'm trying to install 32-bit Java on my 64-bit Precise. Could that possibly be the problem? I tried to follow second answer by Jonas Christensen. I tried to open it, it says file is an unknown type. I tried the terminal command: ./jre-6u31-linux-i586.bin. But it gave this: Unpacking... Checksumming... Extracting... ./jre-6u32-linux-i586.bin: 86: ./jre-6u32-linux-i586.bin: ./install.sfx.5736: not found Failed to extract the files. Please refer to the Troubleshooting section of the Installation Instructions on the download page for more information.

  Beware of new line characters One of the most frequent issues we encounter in Tech Support is the corruption of files that are transferred between Windows and Unix.   The transfer can occur at any stage, but ultimately involves a transfer of a file using an ftp client that is running on Windows;  it could be ftp or filezilla. Windows uses two characters to mark the end of a line in a text file (CR/LF),carriage return, linefeed.   Unix uses a single character (CR). In all situations, it is best to use binary mode transfer for all files, including ascii text files. Common problems: upload a core file from unix to windows using ftp in ascii mode.The file is going to be larger on Windows than Unix.ftp doesn't know if this is a text file with real line-ends, it takes every ascii CR and transmits two ascii characters CR/LF.The core file, tar file, library ... will be corrupted when transferred to Oracle. download a shell script to Windows, and transfer it to Unix using ftpIf the file is edited on Windows, the unix script line-end chars will be doubled.Unix doesn't know how to handle that, and will likely tell you the script is not executable.Why?  The first line of a shell script ( called "sh-bang" ), identifies the command interpreter the unix shell should use for this script.   Common examples:#/bin/sh#/bin/ksh#/bin/bash#/bin/perl#/bin/sh^M    # will not be understood.#/bin/env ksh # special syntax.  Find ksh and run it dos2unix is a common utility found on most unix platforms, that repairs the issue of Windows LineEnd characters in unix script files.   I've written my own flavor of this utility for use in Tech Support and build environments, that is a bit easier to use, and has some nice side-effects. accepts a list of files:   dos2unix *.sh repairs the file in-place.  Doesn't generate a new file you have to name retains the same timestamp;  it is the encoding that changed, not the file content. Here are the versions of dos2unix for each of the environments we work in.They are compressed with gzip, to avoid the ftp ascii transfer trap,and because I am quite limited in the number of files I can upload to this blog. • LDAP loginShell on platforms with different paths

  I'm using LDAP to deal with users and authentication across my network. I'm now adding FreeBSD hosts and have hit a problem with login shells. on Linux, shells tend to be in /bin/$shellname, so setting my login shell in LDAP to /bin/zsh works perfectly. on FreeBSD, /bin/zsh doesnt exist, I need to use /usr/local/bin/zsh. is there a solution to this? I imagine I might be able to make some sort of login-shell.sh script that LDAP passes out as the "shell" and then use the script to determine the actual shell for the user, but I'm not a fan of that idea. I'm using Debian and FreeBSD, both with a standard OpenLDAP/PAM/nss setup. edit: it looks like using /bin/sh and adding an exec $shell to .profile would "work", but that doesnt scale very well.

• I can't install kbibtex (KD4)

  I have ubuntu 11.10 and am trying to install the latest version of kbibtex but I can't do it. Anyone know how to do? • -ln links to wrong file

  I've just installed matlab and want to be able to call it from the terminal. It works fine when I explicitly call it from its directory. I cd to /usr/local/bin and type sudo ln -s /usr/local/MATLAB/R2012a/bin/matlab matlab when I then type "matlab" in the terminal, I get the error message "bash: /media/OS/MATLAB/bin/matlab: No such file or directory" I have no idea why it's trying to call matlab from /media. I've tried deleting the file from usr/local/bin but when I create it again the same thing happens. Any help would be very much appreciated.

• Visual Studio compiles WPF application twice during build

  I have a WPF app in VS2008 that compiles twice during the build. The two CSC command lines are similar but with some differences. The first CSC command line does not have an /resource options, the second has two /resource options on the command line. The second CSC command line has these additional arguments: /resource:"obj\Debug AutoCAD\VisualApp.g.resources" /resource:"obj\Debug AutoCAD\CAP.Visual.Properties.Resources.resources" I hate to post
