• Recommend a good DVD or BD replacement drive that can read older CD-R/DVD+R media?

  So I have a bunch of older CD-R (and a few DVD+R) discs that are either suffering from "bit rot", or a case of crappy no-name Chinese DVD drives being unable to read some or all of anymore. I just threw my last no-name DVD drive in the trash after it ejected a disk still spinning causing it to scratch to the point of being useless, so I'm looking for a replacement drive this time around with an eye for quality over a dirt cheap price. I'd prefer a BD drive, but I'll take any suggestions for good, reliable DVD or BD drives that people have reported having good success with for reading older burned media. Any takers?

• Install Windows XP/7 without a CD drive when the BIOS does not support booting from USB devices

  I have a computer that has a dead CD drive in it and it seriously needs a new installation of Windows (XP is on it now, but Windows 7 does not sound that bad). At first I tried making a bootable USB drive, but it does not look like the BIOS supports booting directly from a USB drive. Is there some sort of boot loader that I can put onto the hard drive first and boot from the USB drive using that? If not, how else can I re-install Windows on the computer? Edit: The only bootable device the computer has it the network with PXE (although I have no idea how to do that) and it's three internal hard drives

• What could be wrong with my CD drive and how do you fix it?

  My CD drive hasn't worked in about 8 months. I was burning CDs in a hurry and pulled it out because it was taking too long (probably an average amount of time). Im running a laptop (Toshiba Satellite A505-6965) that uses a slot drive. Now my computer doesn't accept CDs. It used to pull them in but it doesn't anymore. Ive heard it make odd noises a few times but thats it. The slot is these spongey things and Ive managed to peek into the drive with a flashlight and theres nothing in the way, really. Could someone explain the mechanics of what happened and if it would be possible to fix it? If itd be possible to fix it through Linux that would be great since I keep getting the BSOD (0x0000007B) and am going to try reinstalling Windows 7. But I can't really do that since I don't have a USB drive larger than 2 GB (Windows is about 4 GB) so Im relying on Linux ATM.

• How to cd into smb://[email protected] from terminal?

  I am using ubuntu and gnome on my computer. When I open up File Browser, on the left hand rail, I see conveniently a folder called "Work Server". When I mouse over it, the following caption appears "smb://[email protected]". If I click on that folder, then I can see the contents of that folder. Everything is great. So now when I open up a terminal/shell, I type in cd smb://[email protected] I get an error saying the directory doesn't exist. How do I enter this directory via shell/terminal?

• Windows 8 Secureboot: How do you bootup from another device such as cd/dvd drive or usb flash etc.?

  On PC's and laptops running an older OS, this is just a simple matter of going into the BIOS and setting the boot sequence and putting the boot cd/dvd in the drive. In many cases you can even just hit one of the F* function keys to bring up the boot sequence menu on-the-fly during POST. The main problem I'm running into is that other devices besides the primary HD is disabled when SecureBoot is enabled. So far the only way I've gotten it to work is to disable SecureBoot and enable something called legacy mode. Needless to say this make it difficult to boot things like OS recovery tools, PartitionHD backups, Linux LiveCD's and a bunch of others. Is there another procedure for doing this since it seems to mess up the Windows 8 install? By mess up I mean that after re-enabling SecureBoot and starting Windows 8 normally, the OS goes into a 'preping repair phase' for some reason that takes forever to complete before getting into a usable desktop.

• Vim: How can I :cd to an sftp directory?

  Hi, I'm currently an emacs user, but thought I would come back and take another look at Vim for fun. My client machine is Ubuntu, and I frequently work on other ubuntu servers within my network, emacs and tramp is really nice in this regard, I can just connect to a file via sftp and then easily navigate to it's parents/children/sibling, just as if I was dealing with a file on the local file system. With Vim I can sftp to a file, but none of the navigation stuff works, when I use :e or fuzzy file search, vim still thinks I'm back on the client machine. If I try to :cd to the sftp directory I get an error. Is there anyway I can get the same file/folder navigation regardless of whether I'm looking at an sftp folder or a folder on my client machine?   I was wondering while developing some application (though this is not a development question) if the cd command used in Windows is a wildcard or cross-platform command of sorts. I looked up on table with comands for Unix/Linux and MAC OS X and it turns out that it seems to be there. I am not a multi-os user, so I ask if anyone with experience in different OSes can tell me: If this command really exists and works If it has the same functionality (change directory) If there are any problems with its use If in any OS there is another command-line command that does the same in a better/more elaborate/more frequetly used way. • How do I audit CD/DVD tray opening events in Windows 7?

  Since installing Windows 7, the entire office has experienced random CD tray openings, sometimes while we are in the office, sometimes not. On my PC, I have two disc-reading devices, but only the top one ever slides open. I have found nothing in the event logs to that looks appropriate, even going to them right after I saw my own tray slide open all by itself. Although it's not hurting anything (that I can tell), I'd like to know what is going on. To that end, are there any useful ways to audit these events?

• How to install Windows with no CD drive boot option in BIOS?

  I have a new computer which I built from scratch and I am trying to install a copy of Windows Vista on it. I am able to get to the BIOS and change the boot options which are as follows.. -Built-in EFI Shell -SATA: ST31000528AS I have searched around for and everything I find says to boot from the CD rom. However, as you can see. That is not an option for me. So I am wondering if there is another way around this? Is it possible to boot the Disk from the EFI Shell? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks EDIT: I have tried this.. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744321%28v=ws.10%29.aspx UPDATE: I managed to make my USB bootable via the BIOS and I have copied my windows Vista disk onto my USB via drag and drop. However I am still not able to get the windows install to start. Also I have tried booting it from the EFI shell using the following command.. blk6: blk6:\> \EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.EFI Still no luck..

• DVD/CD burning .zip: is it more reliable, faster, longer lasting to burn a zip of files rather than the files as a folder?

  Is it more reliable, faster, longer lasting to burn to CD/DVD a zip (or a few large zips) of files rather than the files as a folder? Just thinking if 1000s of small files would not be as efficiently recorded compared with one or a few large zips. Also, even after the burning program verifies the disc, I also use Beyond Compare to compare the files with those on the disc. Always binary compares as identical but I hear the drive stuttering presumably as the head is being shifted only slightly each time to seek the next file, which leads me to think that its best to make one or more zips and copy those locally to compare. Or is it that burning invidual files to the disc is not as readable which causes the head to stutter. There aren't any problems, my disc burns are reliable, just thinking more of efficiency and longevity, the discs burn and verify fast enough on my 18x DVD burner. I'm using ImgBurn mostly. Also used Nero in the past. I burn whole discs closed, finalised. Not sure which write mode but would think Disc At Once from a temporary cached image made by the burning program would be the most reliable.

• Are my Linux symbolic links acting correctly?

  Hi all I've been using Linux on and off for the last 15 years and today I came across something in bash that surprised me. Setup the following directory structure: $ cd /tmp $ mkdir /tmp/symlinktest $ mkdir /tmp/symlinktest/dir $ mkdir /tmp/symlinktarget Now create two sym links in symlinktest pointing to symlinktarget: $ cd /tmp/symlinktest $ ln -s ../symlinktarget Asym $ ln -s ../symlinktarget Bsym Now, in bash, the following tab completion does strange things. Type the following: $ cd dir $ cd ../A[TAB] Pressing the tab key above completes the line to: $ cd ../Asym/ as I expected. Now press enter to change into Asym and type: $ cd ../B[TAB] This time pressing the tab key completes the link to: $ cd ../Bsym[space] Note that there is now a space after the Bsym and there is no trailing slash. My question is, why when changing from the physical directory "dir" to Asym it recognises that Asym is a link to a directory, but when changing from one sym link to another, it doesn't recognise that it's a link to a directory? In addition, if I try to create a new file within Asym, I get an error message: $ cd /tmp/symlinktest/Asym $ cat hello > ../Bsym/file.txt -bash: ../Bsym/file.txt: No such file or directory I always thought that symlinks were mostly transparent except to programs that need to manipulate them. • Permission denied after creating home partition

  I have recently created a separate home partition following this tutorial https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Partitioning/Home/Moving. Since I’m still a newbie in the Linux (struggling to learn) I felt happy when every thing seemed to work smooth. How ever, I realised after a while that I had lost all permission to my subfolders in the my home folder. I still can read/write the files placed directly in /home/magnus but I'm denied access to any of the subfolders. I just realised one more disturbing thing, probably related to home-partition story above: When I try cd ~/Music/ I get the message bash: cd: /home/magnus/Music/: Permission denied When I try: sudo cd ~/Music/ I get the result sudo: cd: command not found Seems strange that the cd command have been lost? What have I done wrong and is there a way to fix this? btw: I use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Thanks for all the help! Magnus

It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment." how can i fix this and what does it mean specifically? i'm installing via usb so it can't be the CD. the laptop is recent so it cant be an old HD.

• Including an embedded framework using a cross-project-reference: Header no such file or directory

  I'm trying to create a Cocoa framework by using a cross-project reference in Xcode. I have 2 projects: one for the framework; one for the application that will use the framework. This framework is not intended to be stored within the system; it is an embedded framework that lives within the application bundle. I have successfully made the cross-project reference, marked the framework as being a dependency of my target, added a Copy Files build phase that puts the framework in Contents/Frameworks/ and added the framework to the linker phase (I checked the little "Target" checkbox; I've also done it manually by dragging the framework into the linker phase). My framework's install directory is correctly set to @executable_path/../Frameworks. However, when I try to build my app it: a) Correctly builds the framework first b) Correctly copies the framework c) Errors because it cannot find the master header file in my framework I have verified that the header is there. I can see it in the app product that is partially built. ls build/Debug/CioccolataTest.webapp/Contents/Frameworks/Cioccolata.framework/Headers/Cioccolata.h build/Debug/CioccolataTest.webapp/Contents/Frameworks/Cioccolata.framework/Headers/Cioccolata.h I have been able to successfully build the app by copying my framework into /Library/Frameworks (I can then delete it again after the successful build), but this is a workaround, I'm looking to find it out why Xcode doesn't find the framework's master header file without it being copied to a system directory. Is copying it to the app bundle during the build not sufficient? • tcsh `cd` always issues a printout of `$PWD`. How do I disable this?

  Someone in IT thought it would be a good idea to modify the default behavior of the command cd in our tcsh environment. As of Monday the "upgraded" version of cd always prints out $PWD after it navigates to the new directory. e.g. % cd ~/ Directory: /nfs/pdx/home/rbroger1 which cd yields no results so it isn't being alias'd. Is there some environment variable or normal tcsh variable that is being set in our setup scripts to produce this output? I don't want to change all my scripts to use a wrappered or alias'd cd. I just want plain ol' cd.

• convert decrypted .vobs to .avi with ffmpeg on ubuntu

  I have a .vob file that has bee ripped from a dvd, when I watch the .vob its very good quality video and 5.1 english audio but when I use ffmpeg it has rubbish video and mono french audio. That was using this command: ffmpeg -i /samba/ripping/vobs/12161840#2.vob -f avi /samba/ripping/avis/test.avi I've tried a few different variations on that but it never comes back with anything good just bigger files with bad video and incorrect sound. • cd Terminal at a given directory after running a Python script?

  I'm working on a simple Python script that can use subprocess and/or os to execute some commands, which is working fine. However, when the script exits I'd like to cd the actual Terminal (in this case OS X) so on exit, the new files are ready to use in the directory where the have been created. All the following (subprocess.Popen, os.system, os.chdir) can do what I want from within the script (i.e. they execute stuff in the target directory) but on exit leave the Terminal at the script's own directory, not the target directory. I'd like to avoid writing a shell script to temporary file just to achieve this, if this is at all possible anyway?

• Win XP Pro SP3 MUP.SYS last driver to load before freeze. Can't boot into XP CD / Recovery Console

  I've tried everything and have even looked at the thread on this site "Fresh installation of XP hangs after MUP.SYS" but nothing. I'm running Memtest86+ v4.00 but no luck (everything looks good) It freezes at windows boot screen, not even 1 green block shows up in the loader. I go into safemode and it stops at MUP.SYS, it's probably not MUP.SYS that is the problem but it's probably the next file that is trying to load or something. The end-user has not installed anything at all that could be problematic. I have pulled the HDD out and put it into another pc and have checked it, nothing suspicious at all. It's just as clean as when I first cleaned it up and secured it. Someone / anyone please help! :) Thank you!

• How can I do Ubuntu Lucid Desktop installation with HTTP preseed file and desktop installation CD?

  Installation media: ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso I tried a lot of different boot parameters, but either the installer ignored the preseed configuration, or it boot itself directly as LiveCD. An example of the boot parameters I've tried: auto url=http://mydomain.com/path/preseed.cfg boot=casper only-ubiquity initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash -- If I remove only-ubiquity, it boots as a LiveCD. If I remove boot=casper, it won't boot. If I add vga=normal locale=en_US console-setup/layoutcode=us console-setup/ask_detect=false interface=auto, it still can't do automatic install. If I remove auto, it's the same. What am I missing? From the apache log of the server hosting preseed.cfg, I see that the installer has no problems fetching the preseed file. My preseed file is almost identical to the one at https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/installation-guide/example-preseed.txt. Moreover, I have run debconf-set-selections -c preseed.cfg to ensure that the preseed file is correct. Any ideas?

  I have a bootable DVD which boots the same Kernel as the Hard Drive (which uses SELinux). I have copied /etc/selinux and all kernel modules to my ramdisk, and have tried various combinations of selinux=1 and selinux 1 with enforcing 1 and enforcing 0. as Kernel boot parameters. All files contained in the checkpolicy, libselinux, policycoreutils, selinux-policy and selinux-policy-targeted rpms have also been copied into the ramdisk tree. After the system boots from the ramdisk, I check dmesg: % dmesg | grep -i selinux Kernel command line: initrd=idrd.img ramdisk_size=110476 selinux=1 SELinux: Initializing. SELinux: Starting in permissive mode selinux_register_security: Registering secondary module capability SElinux: Registering netfilter hooks But SELinux isn't running: % /usr/sbin/getenforce Disabled % /usr/sbin/setenforce 1 /usr/sbin/setenforce: SELinux is disabled Neither /var/log/messages nor /proc/kmsg hold clues.
