  • Book: Pro SQL Server 2008 Service Broker: Klaus Aschenbrenner

    - by Greg Low
I've met Klaus a number of times now and attended a few of his sessions at conferences. Klaus is doing a great job of evangelising Service Broker. I wish the SQL Server team would give it as much love. Service Broker is a wonderful technology, let down by poor resourcing. Microsoft did an excellent job of building the plumbing for this product in SQL Server 2005 but then provided no management tools and no prescriptive guidance. Everyone then seemed surprized that the takeup of it was slow. I even...(read more)

  • Modern Shader Book?

    - by Michael Stum
I'm interested in learning about Shaders: What are they, when/for what would I use them, and how to use them. (Specifically I'm interested in Water and Bloom effects, but I know close to 0 about Shaders, so I need a general introduction). I saw a lot of books that are a couple of years old, so I don't know if they still apply. I'm targeting XNA 4.0 at the moment (which I believe means HLSL Shaders for Shader Model 4.0), but anything that generally targets DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4 is helpful I guess.

Servers hosting Oracle products which are clients of an NTP server (Network Time Protocol) may be particularly susceptible to this issue as the NTP server is updated. Linux distributions which may be affected include Oracle Enterprise Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle VM and Oracle Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel. Asianux 2 and 3, based on RHEL 4 and 5, may also be affected. One report of correction to high agent CPU using Note 1472421.1 on SLES11 has also been reported. Not all customers will be affected, but those, who are affected, may observe higher than normal CPU consumption on their Linux environments where JVM's are utilized.  In Oracle Enterprise Manager ( EM ) , this problem can manifest itself as high CPU consumption with the EM Agent process (which runs on a JVM in EM 12c, for instance).  It is possible that the OMS is also affected. We would advise customers to review the description of this problem in MOS Note 1472651.1 and take action if they observe that their environment is affected. DevOps is a response to the interdependence of software development and IT operations. It aims to help an organization rapidly produce software products and services. That definition of DevOps is the – what. The “why” is even easier. Standardized development methodology, clear communication and documented processes supported by a standards-based, proven middleware platform improves application development and management cycles, brings agility and provides greater availability and security to your IT infrastructure. Clearly, DevOps is about connecting people, products and processes. Ultimately, DevOps is about connecting IT to business. May be I can put the font on my web server? Is this font available for free? Can it slow down my page? Or may be I can replace "Comic Sans MS" by another font which is similar and is available on the 3 operation systems?

  • Upcoming Carbon Tax in South Africa

    - by Evelyn Neumayr
By Elena Avesani, Principal Product Strategy Manager, Oracle In 2012, the South Africa National Treasury announced the plan to impose a carbon tax to cut carbon emissions that are blamed for climate change. South Africa is ranked among the top 20 countries measured by absolute carbon dioxide emissions, with emissions per capita in the region of 10 metric tons per annum and over 90% of South Africa's energy produced by burning fossil fuels. The top 40 largest companies in the country are responsible for 207 million tons of carbon dioxide, directly emitting 20 percent of South Africa’s carbon output. The legislation, originally scheduled to be implemented from January 2015 to 31 December 2019, is now delayed to January 2016. It will levy a carbon tax of R120 (US$11) per ton of CO2, rising then by 10 percent a year until 2020, while all sectors bar electricity will be able to claim additional relief of at least 10 percent. The South African treasury proposed a 60 percent tax-free threshold on emissions for all sectors, including electricity, petroleum, iron, steel and aluminum. Oracle Environmental Accounting and Reporting (EA&R) supports these needs and guarantees consistency across organizations in how data is collected, retained, controlled, consolidated and used in calculating and reporting emissions inventory. EA&R also enables companies to develop an enterprise-wide data view that includes all 5 of the key sustainability categories: carbon emissions, energy, water, materials and waste. Thanks to its native integration with Oracle E-Business Suite and JD Edwards EnterpriseOne ERP Financials and Inventory Systems and the capability of capturing environmental data across business silos, Oracle Environmental Accounting and Reporting is uniquely positioned to support a strategic approach to carbon management that drives business value. I asked this question on Stackoverflow and they suggested it was more appropriate here. I"m taking a course soon based on the first fourteen chapters of Cormen's Introduction to Algorithms. The course is based on a translation of the 2003 edition. I have two questions: Is it recommended to get the newer 2009 edition and what are the differences? Can anyone recommend a good companion text which has more worked problems and less, "this clearly works" type explanations?

  • Good Intro to Computer Science Book for FE Developer [on hold]

    - by Squirkle
I am a JavaScript developer/architect who, like many developers these days, did not come from a Computer Science background (I studied Philosophy at a liberal arts college), but instead learned development by actually building applications, and by reading books explaining language grammars, design patterns, and best practices. I have never felt that my ignorance of CS concepts has hurt my ability to build great apps or find employment. Recently, however, I have felt the itch to grow in this direction. Do you have any suggestions for some good introductory CS resources/books? I know that Computer Science is a huge field and my question is very general, but I am looking for a 101-type survey of the high-level concepts, from which I can branch off into more specific areas of study. Thanks!

During this event, an interactive "Zero to Cloud" session will showcase the transformational journey of a fictitious enterprise to the private cloud using the latest solutions from Oracle—including, Oracle Database, Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle VM and Oracle Enterprise Manager, as well as Oracle’s full range of engineered systems. The online "Zero to Cloud" resource center includes best practices from Oracle experts and early adopter customers as well as interviews with Oracle development executives responsibly for Oracle’s private cloud solutions and roadmap. It also includes a new self-assessment quiz that can help determine readiness for a successful private cloud deployment. Once you've determined organizational readiness, explore early adopter tips, demos, guides, exclusive white papers and more at the "Zero to Cloud" resource center.
