  Hello alltogether I am currently planning to buy a hardware-raid controller. This became necessary since I am running Linux and Windows in parallel and now need the redundancy for both OS (Im am going to use RAID1 / Mirroring). Therefore I am searching for a hardware raid controller which is well supported by linux / ubuntu (reporting smart values, stats for the harddrives, etc...). This controller should have four sata ports and if possible it should fit in a PCIE-1x Slot. I would greatly appreciate, if you could suggest some devices. Thanks in advance

• Skipping video and audio with PS3MediaServer

  I'm using the latest PS3MediaServer build right from the repos suggested in the Ubuntu Wiki. I'm streaming multiple movies from my server (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) to my PS3 over wireless. Sometimes, during some movies, the audio and the video will begin skipping. This can last anywhere between 5 and 30 seconds before it goes back to normal. I have a four core i5 processor and 8GB of DDR3 RAM so I don't think my computer is having a hard time keeping up with the transcoding. So this leads me to believe it's either sub-optimal transcoding options from within PS3MS or my network can't handle the heat. Other than the out-of-box configuration, is there any way I can tweak the settings for the application to use my resources more efficiently?

• how to set different wallpapers in ubuntu workspaces

  I'm having an issues trying to customize ubuntu workspaces in the gnome environment. Assuming the default four workspaces aka desktops, how can one have a different wallpaper for each one? When I go to an individual workspace to set its wallpaper, all of the workspaces use it. So if I set: wallpaper B on workspace 2 wallpaper C on workspace 3 What will happen is that all the workspaces will default to the last wallpaper set no matter which workspace it was set in. What's even weirder is that the very first wallpaper set upon using it for the very first time is what shows up when i call up the Workspaces tool. Even though once I settle upon a workspace, no matter which one, the original wallpaper disappears and the last wallpaper set is the one that always shows up.

• Graphics on boot split into three sections

  I just installed 13.04 onto a new laptop because of the ease of install with the uefi bios. When I boot the system though, the screen is split into three sections each about 640x200 at the top of the screen, with the active terminal mirrored across them. Although I can login, startx fails due to something about a file. I have tried booting with vga=711 and normal nomodeset with no success. Booting the live usb I originally installed from results in the same issue. The graphics driver in the xorg.conf.something from what I can make out is set to vesa, but it could be set to some other four character value that is similar to vesa, hard to tell. How can I fix this? One thing to note, the laptop has two dedicated GT 750m's, along with the intel 4000 built into the processor. This is what it looks like, the purple box is what the grub2 menu was in before boot.

• Are there any non-self-taught famous programmers? [closed]

  It seems to me that being a self-taught programmer has significant advantages over picking it up only in higher education. Not only does a self-taught developer have a headstart on their 10 000-odd hours of mastery, but their hobby demonstrates genuine interest. This will likely lead to a process of continuous self-improvement over their career, not to mention increased likelihood of producing personal projects that are worthy of fame. A programmer who spends four years in study (not nearly all of which is going to be directly concerned with programming) has far less leisure to explore and learn independently than does a developer who starts college with even a few years of dedicated hobbyist study. I wonder whether there are any famed developers who had no exposure to programming before deciding to study it in university. I simply doubt that an 18-year-old has the capacity to become a brilliant programmer with no prior experience, but that seems like an awfully elitist and unpleasant view, so I'd like to be proven wrong.

• Why isn't my monitor's native resolution appearing as an option?

  I'm on a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. My monitor's native resolution is 1280x1024. However, in the Monitor Preferences application, I am only presented with 640x480 and 800x600 as options. My video card is an on board Matrox G200eW. I tried installing the proprietary driver from Matrox's website, but the installer immediately throws four errors. I also tried using xrandr to set my resolution, but it simply pops back saying "Size 1280x1024 not found in available modes." How can I get 1280x1024 added to my available sizes to that I can switch to it?

• Firefox zombie process problem

  When I start Firefox a Firefox zombie process starts sometimes (not always) and then goes away after a few seconds (stays sometimes until firefox is closed). This problem occurs with four computers (2 laptops and 2 desktops running ubuntu 10.04, 11.10, precise beta 1 and beta 2) I also have this same problem with other distros like Fedora 16, Linux mint 12, Debian 6 and Arch Linux. Thunderbird is also affected by this zombie process problem. Firefox safe mode does NOT help! Can someone help me to fix this problem? • How can I find a position between 4 vertices in a fragment shader?

  I'm creating a shader with SharpDX (DirectX11 in C#) that takes a segment (2 points) from the output of a Vertex Shader and then passes them to a Geometry Shader, which converts this line into a rectangle (4 points) and assigns the four corners a texture coordinate. After that I want a Fragment Shader (which recieves the interpolated position and the interpolated texture coordinates) that checks the depth at the "spine of the rectangle" (that is, in the line that passes through the middle of the rectangle. The problem is I don't know how to extract the position of the corresponding fragment at the spine of the rectangle. This happens because I have the texture coordinates interpolated, but I don't know how to use them to get the fragment I want, because the coordinate system of a) the texture and b) the position of my fragment in screen space are not the same. Thanks a lot for any help.

  Every once in a while on some technology websites a headline like this will pop up: http://www.osor.eu/news/nl-moving-to-open-source-would-save-government-one-to-four-billion My initial thought about government and organizations moving to open source software is that tons of programmers would lose their jobs and the industry would shrink. At the same time the proliferation and use of open source software seems to be greatly encouraged in many programming communities. Is my thinking that the full embrace of open source software everywhere will hurt the software industry a misconception? If it is not, then why do so many programmers love open source software?

• Slideshows in elastic or fluid layouts?

  Hi folks, I'm building a new WordPress TwentyTen child theme using the ElastiCSS framework ( http://elasticss.com/ ) and am trying to figure out the best way of using some sort of dynamic content slideshow. What is the best way to implement a slideshow in a fluid or elastic layout such that it remains proportional to the other items in the content area? Should I even bother trying to obtain that? Or should I use like four different sizes in conjunction with something like the Less framework ( http://lessframework.com/ )? Thanks! • Low graphics mode on Ubuntu 12.04 with Intel Graphics

  When I boot, my computer just tells me it can't detect graphic card (or something else) settings and it has to use the low graphics mode. Then it gives me four choices, but doesn't let me choose any of them. I can get my computer to boot by going to some sort of terminal mode and then typing sudo gdm. The other graphics manager I have is lightdm. I originally had the nVidia propriety driver, and I've tried bumblebee. Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M is my graphics card. Is there any way to fix this so I can use lightdm again?

  If you work in the US and still don't know what the No Fluff Just Stuff (NFJS) Tour is, you are doing yourself a very serious disfavor. NFJS is basically a set program of world class speakers and topics offered at major US cities year round. I am proud to share with you that I recently joined the legendary NFJS troupe. My hope is that this will help solve the lingering problem of effectively spreading the Java EE message here in the US. I had my tour debut on April 4-5 with the NFJS New York Software Symposium. • On technical talent

  In honour of the regular T-SQL Tuesday blogging, the UnSQL theme started, looking at topics that were not directly SQL related, but nevertheless quite interesting. This is the brainchild of Jen McCown, who posted the second of these recently. I’m actually a bit late in responding, as I haven’t got it in my head to look for these posts yet. Still, Jen says I can still contribute now, hence this post. The theme this time is on Tech Giants. I could list people all day for those I admire in the SQL Server space, and go on even longer if I branch out to other areas. But I actually want to highlight four guys that I admire so much for their skills, integrity and general awesomeness that I hired them. Yes – the guys that work for me at LobsterPot Solutions, being Ben McNamara, David Gardiner, Roger Noble and Ashley Sewell. I admire them all, and they present the company with a platform on which to grow.

• RadBook for Silverlight now supports virtualization

  I am proud to announce that RadBook, along with RadGridView, RadTreeView, RadTreeListView, RadChart and RadScheduler, now supports virtualization. With previous versions, it would take up to 16 seconds to load 1000 pages, where now it takes just 2 seconds to load a set of 10,000,000 (10 million) items.   The cause of the performance boost is the way RadBook handles the unnecessary(non-visible) elements. As you probably know, while turning a page, only four pages are visible at any given moment in time. Previous versions of RadBook would just collapse the unnecessary elements, which had a significant impact on the initial loading time. The new version of RadBook now takes advantage of the VirutalizingPanel and creates only as many elements as necessary for the book to render properly. • Can only run firefox 8.0 in safe mode [closed]

  This is a recent problem but I have no idea what caused it: I can only run firefox in safe mode. Any other mode, I get a completely khaki, unresponsive screen, that I have to forcibly terminate. I have uninstalled firefox, and then re-installed it via synaptic. That didn't seem to work. The problem occurs in all the four user accounts I have defined in the ubuntu. I am running an ubuntu 11.10, amd64. My firefox is version 8.0.

• How to convince management to deal with technical debt?

  This is a question that I often ask myself when working with developers. I've worked at four companies so far, and I've noticed a lack of attention to keeping code clean and dealing with technical debt that hinders future progress in a software app. For example, the first company I worked for had written a database from scratch rather than take something like MySQL and that created hell for the team when refacoring or extending the app. I've always tried to be honest and clear with my manager when he discusses projections, but management doesn't seem interested in fixing what's already there and it's horrible to see the impact it has on team morale and in their attitude towards others. What are your thoughts on the best way to tackle this problem? What I've seen is people packing up and leaving and the company becomes a revolving door with developers coming and and out and making the code worse. How do you communicate this to management to get them interested in sorting out technical debt?
