  • Painfully slow login to AD bound Mac OS X Leopard machine when off home network

    Dear all Just looking for a little help with this problem that seems to trip a lot of people up and is causing me no end of grief. I have a number of fully patched OS X Leopard machines that are bound to my AD (Server 2003). When on the home network, logging in seems swift and works as expected. When users take the machines off site, login can take 5 minutes or more. The user adds correct credentials but the desktop does not appear for a very long time. Outside the office, I have tried logging in using a local Admin account, switching off Airport and then logging in using an AD account. In this situation login is immediate again. It all seems as if Leopard is finding a suitable wireless network, spending far too long looking for the Domain before eventually giving up and using the cached credentials instead. I have read that disabling Bonjour on the machine will stop this problem (i have not yet tested) http://www.macwindows.com/leopardAD.html#111607z ...but I am reluctant to use this "Solution" as I would like to be able to use Bonjour on the local network as well as having AD-bound machines. However, is disabling Bonjour really the only answer? Is there not some time-out setting somewhere that could be amended to stop Leopard spending forever looking for home?   • Allowing XP Home Clients To Access Active Directory Printers

    My school's network is based on Active Directory on Windows Server 2003 servers. Most of the computers in the school are members of the domain. However, we also acquired a passel of netbooks that are running Windows XP Home (as netbooks tend to), and we're trying to make those useful. The netbooks are made available to students by check-out, so none of them are dedicated to a specific user. I only want to allow the netbooks to do two significant network activities: to access the Internet (this is working acceptably well so far), and to print to one or more printers on the network. That second one is where trouble starts. I'm trying to find a way to allow the XP Home clients to access those Active Directory printers. All the solutions that I can come up with right now are expensive, ugly, or both - for example, changing the OS on the netbooks (even with imaging, that would take a lot of my time) or making sure that the user account on each netbook has a matching account in Active Directory with permissions for printing (invites security/maintainability disaster). Are there any elegant solutions? Failing that, what's the best ugly solution for allowing my students to print from the netbooks?

    local install of wp site brought down from host - home page is ok but other pages redirect to wamp config page. I got all local files from host to www dir under local wamp. I got database from host and loaded to new local db and used this tool to adjust site_on_web.com to "localhost/site_on_local" now the home page works great and can login to admin page but when click on reservations page and others of site then site just goes to the wamp server config page even though the url shows correctly as localhost/site_on_local/reservations my htaccess file is this # BEGIN WordPress <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . /index.php [L] </IfModule> # END WordPress and rewrite-module is checked in the php-apache-apache modules setting. now when I uncheck the rewrite-module is checked in the php-apache-apache modules setting or I clear out the whole htaccess file then the pages just goto Not Found The requested URL /ritas041214/about-ritas/ was not found on this server. Please help as I am unsure now about my process to move local site up and down and be able to make it work and without this I am lost...

  • Anti Virus Service does not run - Windows XP SP3 32bit Home

    I have a somewhat strange problem here. I am trying to run Anti Virus Software on my Windows XP Home 32bit System. After a serious crash I had to fall back to an outdated copy of my initial installation and had Windows install 5 years of updates. So far so good. After Intalling a new Anti Virus Software (Bitdefender 2012) everything seemed to be fine, initial scanning went fine and configuration was working. But after restarting the System the Virus Scanner was unable to start up again. Even the Configuration console of the AV Software did not start. I tried scanning the System for malware, but nothing was found. Then I tried a different AV Software (MS Security Essentials), but in the end it did fail to start too. I have tried to start the Service manually, but I seem to be missing the privilege to do so. I am logged in as a Non-"Administrator" User with Admin privileges (Not much choices there on a XP Home System). I cannot switch to Administrator account outside the protected mode. When running Windows in protected mode I am unable to start the AV Software because it does not run in protected mode. I am a bit at loss now...

  • xauth, ssh and missing home directory

    We have several servers, and normaly everything works fine, except now... we get a new aircondition installed. This takes 36 hours and for this time almost all servers got shutdown, only 2 remaining servers run for the most important tasks (i.e. accepting incoming email, delivering some important websites, login-server). Everybody was informed that when they need appropiate data from the homedirs they should fetch it before take down. Long story short: Someone realized that he have run a certain program on one of the servers. No Problem, he can remote login into our login server and run the programm there without home directory (binaries are local and necessary information can be copied to the /tmp). That works like a charm until... ... the user needs to run a GUI programm. I find no easy way to make it running, usually ssh -Y honk@loginserver is enough but now the homedirectory is missing and ssh is not able to copy the cookies into ~/.Xauthority (as the file server with the home directories is down). Paranoid as all systemadmins all X-Server just listen locally not on tcp ports, so no remote X connection possible SSH config is waterproof - i.e. no way to set environment variables. My Problem is, that the generated proxy MIT cookie from ssh get lost as the .Xauthority doesnt exist. If I could retrieve it somehow I could reenter it a .Xauthority in /tmp. The only other option (besides changing the config) which came to my mind is, makeing a tunnel (netcat, or better ssh) from the remote host to the loginserver and copy the cookie manually (not sure if it the tcp-unix domain socket stuff works as expected). Any good suggestions (for the future - now our servers are already up)?

  • Extending a home wireless network using two routers running tomato

    I have two Asus RT-N16 routers each flashed with Tomato (actually Tomato USB). UPSTAIRS: Router 'A' (located upstairs) is connected to the internet via the WAN port and connected via a LAN port to a 10/100/1000 switch (Switch A). Several desktops are also attached to Switch A. Router A uses IP 192.168.1.1. DOWNSTAIRS: I've just acquired Router 'B' and set it to IP 192.168.1.2. I have a cable running from Switch A downstairs to another switch (Switch B). Tivo, a blu-ray player and a Mac are connected to Switch B. My plan was to connect Router B to Switch B so that I have improved wireless access downstairs. (The wireless signal from Router A gets weak downstairs in a number of locations.) How should I configure Router B so that all devices in the house can see and talk to one another? I know that I need to change DHCP on Router B so that it doesn't cover the same range as DHCP on Router A. Should I be using WDS on the two routers, or is that unnecessary since I already have a wired connection between the two routers? Any other thoughts or suggestions? Thanks! --Jeff

    I'm trying to get my head around how to do this with the equipment I have. Here's how it is.. I have an old laptop that has server 2003 installed on it. This has no wireless NIC, but I have a spare wireless router that I can wire to it. We have a virgin wireless router which provides the home with internet access. What I would like to do it make resources on the server 2003 machine available to the rest of the devices in the home - specifically a couple of laptops running windows 7. Ideally I'd like to be able to use the laptop as a fileserver but maybe also offer application virtualization. In the first instance however, I'd like to create a file server with the laptop and allow connections to it by the other machines. Virtualisation is just a 'nice to have'... Given the hardware I have is this possible? Can you point me in the right direction how to do what I want if this is the case?

  • Windows 7 Upgrade Fail from Home Premium to Ultimate Professional

    I had a hard drive crash, which meant I had to install a new HDD in my Dell 64-Bit XPS 1350 (lovely computer). I had previously been running Windows 7 Ultimate Professional which I had upgraded from the OEM Win 7 Home Premium by means of a disk I purchased from my university. Using the Recovery disk from Dell I installed Windows 7 Home Premium successfully on the new hard drive, but when I have tried to upgrade via my disk to Ultimate it installs the whole thing, says its complete, but when I reboot, tells me: "This version of Windows could not be installed. Your previous version of Windows has been restored, and you can continue to use it." I've installed the drivers from Dell's driver disk, but still to no avail. I've also used Driver Robot to update all my drivers. I can't find a .dmp file anywhere under C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources but I did find this file under C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther. setupact.log https://www.dropbox.com/s/yzy7fhkxlzc235y/setupact.log If anyone could please advise me what I need to do to fix Windows so it will upgrade properly, I would greatly appreciate it.

ORIGINAL QUESTION I have two executable files I downloaded and am trying to add to the path. They are located in /home/user/folder and the specific files are /home/user/folder/app1 /home/user/folder/app2 Both app1 and app2 have the executable flag set to all (user, group, other). I can execute the files if I am in /home/user/folder and I execute these commands ./app1 ./app2 However I can't run them from elsewhere. I added this line to my .profile PATH="$PATH:/home/user/folder" and then sourced the path with . /home/user/.profile and I can see app1 and app2 when I use command completion (pressing tab). However here is what happens when I try to run app1 or app2 with the following commands (the following only shows 'app1' but the same is true of 'app2') user@comp:~$ app1 -bash: app1: command not found user@comp:~$ /home/user/folder/app1 -bash: app1: command not found user@comp:~/folder$ ./app1 (program runs) I'm stumped :), I must have missed something simple.     I am using Avast Home Edition in my Dell Mini 10v. As you know the notebook is using an under powered processor which is not really suitable for browsing some rich internet websites. So I am in the middle of improving the performance. Will uninstalling Avast and using Microsoft Security Essentials will improve the performance? the memory usage of avast is quite low but I can't compromise security. Is Security essentials a good bet?

I've never had chance before to work with RAID, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    When using the home, end, page up and page down movement keys in a text editor, the cursor stays in the same spot, even though the window has moved elsewhere. I know that you can use the option modifier to move the cursor along, but is there a way to move the cursor where your window has moved to (without using the mouse)? Another alternative would be to make these movement keys always behave as if the option modifier key is already pressed. Is this possible?
