• Technology/Techniques to prevent offensive images on a website

  I am planing to build a website which one of its main features is the usage of pictures. I was wondering what existing techniques are used to prevent offensive pictures (i.e pornography) to get loaded by users. i.e What does Facebook or Pinterest use? As well I would like to know what your recommendations would be to control offensive pictures to get uploaded to the site (OpenSource tools maybe..) Taking into consideration this is a personal project and will be developed with a very small budget. Thank you

• What are good options for hosting video that give you privacy and control (not youtube or vimeo)?

  I have used http://www.longtailvideo.com/bits-on-the-run,http://www.influxis.com/, wistia for video hosting. Wistia didn't allow the finer control that we wanted to have. Influxis doesn't have the features that Bits on the Run has but platform usage for BOTR gets expensive. I was thinking of moving the videos to Amazon CDN. What are your thoughts and experiences with video hosting and are there any recommendations? Videos will be privately streamed to 100's of doctors offices.

• Is there an effective way to test XSL transforms/BizTalk maps?

  Creating repeatable tests for BizTalk maps is frustrating. I can't find a way to handle testing them like I'd do unit testing, because I can't find ways to break them into logical chunks. They tend to be one big monolithic unit, and any change has the potential to ripple through the map and break a lot of unit tests. Even if I could break it up, creating XML test inputs is painful and error prone. Is there any effective way of testing these? I'd settle for recommendations for testing XSL transforms in general, but I specifically mention BizTalk maps primarily for the reason that when using the mapper, there really isn't any way to break your XSLT into templates (which I'd imagine you could use to break up your logic into testable chunks, but I've honestly never gotten that far with XSLT).

  I'm looking for an SMS gateway that has the following criteria: Supports sending from short codes Opt-in capabilities for end-user (will require user to opt in before sending message) Has a clean API, preferably an XML/ REST API, although SOAP is fine The cheaper the better Honestly, I keep searching and searching all permutations of "SMS Gateway API" etc... on Google and I can't find any great services that can support all of these criteria. There are a lot of really SEO optimized sites and I can't tell which of them are legit. I'm looking for something that will be easy and quick to implement, and none of my colleagues have any recommendations. What APIs have you used (preferably with PHP) that have gotten this job done? Which services have been the most pleasant to deal with, both technically and support-wise? Update: Will be sending primarily (probably solely) in the US.

• Unstable after moving headless server from usb-hdd to usb pendrive

  Ubuntu server 12.04.1 running from usb-hdd is rock solid for months. After copying the partitions to a Kingston usb pendrive the system will only run for 3-4 days before some services fail. Is running 12.04.1 from usb pendrive a viable approach? How do I troubleshoot the problem? In the meanwhile, I have reverted back to usb-hdd. Willing to buy a usb pendrive that is known to work. Recommendations?

• Should i expect real world questions from interviewing agency ? [closed]

  I started coding almost a year ago. By "coding" I mean HTML(5), CSS(3), and only few times I implemented some AJAX and JavaScript. I am interviewing for a position that expects me to know HTML, CSS, JS, JQuery, and AJAX. I feel confident in HTML5/CSS3 subject area and somewhat ok with javascript. Will agency expect from me to write some code during the interview? I do have a live website as an example which contains snapshots of past projects which were sent to them.   This is my first question here. I am looking for a form builder solution that will allow rapid form development even by beginners, without needing much knowledge of programming. I prefer a solution that we can install on our servers. I have 3 products shortlisted for further review: MachForm, RackForms(formerly FormBoss) and Form Tools If anyone has used any of these products, I would appreciate your input on your experience with using these products and your recommendations. Does anyone know of other products that I must be sure to include in my review? We will eventually move over hundreds of forms to the chosen solution and I would like to make sure as much as I can that it will still be a viable solution in the coming years. • Sending Mass Emails

  I have a massive list of users who registered for accounts and opted into a mailing list on my web site and I am interested in sending out a weekly newsletter. How should I go about doing this. I tried sending it out through my host server, but I received a notice stating that if I did it again they would kick me off the server. Are there any good companies that are designed for this type of thing? I need to find a company that will support this and show me some sort of report about how many emails get opened, deleted, opened then deleted, etc. Any recommendations?

• Web App for storing and organize programming information?

  So, I've found myself, after several years of coding (I consider myself a coder, rather than a programmer) full of links and loose snippets and coding tips, all dispersed across the web. In such way it is barely usable, even when every bit is important or interesting. I thought of simply storing the links in delicious or something alike, but it's not really the links I want to keep, I just need the succinth info. So I was thinking to use some web app, something like a wiki, maybe much more simple, so I could access it though my mobile if I need it. I could code it, but as I stated it before, I'm more of a code monkey, and I'm sure my solution would be far from decent... Can anyone give me recommendations on this?

• Can I get some advice on graphics cards please?

  I know that Steam for linux is on the way and have been seen a lot of games appearing in the Ubuntu Software Centre of late but my system lacks a decent graphics card and was hoping I could get some recommendations. The desktop is a Packard Bell Imedia S1800 (or Imedia D3526 UK) with the following specs; Memory: 3.8 GiB Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5800 @ 3.20GHz × 2 The system lists the graphics as 'unknown', though I think its just an integrated Intel card From what I can see there is a free PCI-E x16 slot. Any advice would be great, thanks!

• How should I implement the repository pattern for complex object models?

  Our data model has almost 200 classes that can be separated out into about a dozen functional areas. It would have been nice to use domains, but the separation isn't that clean and we can't change it. We're redesigning our DAL to use Entity Framework and most of the recommendations that I've seen suggest using a Repository pattern. However, none of the samples really deal with complex object models. Some implementations that I've found suggest the use of a repository-per-entity. This seems ridiculous and un-maintainable for large, complex models. Is it really necessary to create a UnitOfWork for each operation, and a Repository for each entity? I could end up with thousands of classes. I know this is unreasonable, but I've found very little guidance implementing Repository, Unit Of Work, and Entity Framework over complex models and realistic business applications.

• How do I secure a Tomcat installation?

  I have installed tomcat on my Ubuntu Home 11.10 system and can successfully access the test page online after port forwarding on 8080 within my router. I have not made any other changes to the router, Ubuntu or the tomcat install, everything else has remained standard. I intend on using this to play around with Java Servlets and basic web development for my own personal use. What steps, if any, would you suggest I take to ensure this is secure? Should I change anything within the Tomcat configuration? • Looking to create a website ... need assistance on what technologies to use!

  First off, My group and I don't have any experience with databases or anything of that sort, only programming (not web-programming), so this post is just me wondering what things I should start researching and possibly some referral to a hosting company. The abstract idea is to have a list of things, each categorized, and each item with user-submitted reviews (made by users who are signed up with the website). Would absolutely everything be stored on a SQL database? (the long text reviews for example) Does anyone have any suggestions on some 'web frameworks' we could use to jumpstart us? What should our absolute first step be? (I was thinking about first designing the basic database? so we have something to work around...?) • Recommended Linux distro to boot into RAM (from USB flash drive)?

  I don't mind if I use USB flash drive or CD-ROM, but I would prefer USB flash drive. I had a squizz at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions_that_run_from_RAM On my own computer, I would be able to use any of the distros in the list. The largest "RAM required" in the list is 4GB. I would like to be able to use it on any computer, so I suppose 1GB or less would be better. I tried to follow the method described on Distro that I can load into RAM? but the distro listed there, from Israel Remix Team, doesn't seem to be available. Before I start trial-and-error on different distros, does anyone have any recommendations?

• Does Ubuntu One offer Windows Live Sync type services?

  I'm an Ubuntu convert from Windows and I'm liking it very much. One of the few things I miss in Windows is their Live Sync. I don't know what it's like now or whether it still exists, but at the time (2008/2009), Windows Live Sync lets you sync folders between computers without uploading contents on their server. That is, only the metadata of the subscribed folders are uploaded (things like changelog etc.). I really liked that, and I was wondering if Ubuntu One has an option that does the same thing? At the moment it only seems to have the option to upload all file contents on the web, and I'd rather not do that. If Ubuntu One doesn't have the service similar to Windows Live Sync as described above, then I really recommend it. I would greatly appreciate it if someone can point me to the right place to make my recommendations. Thanks in advance!

• Is testable code actually more stable? [closed]

  A google scholar search turns up numerous papers on testability, including models for computing testability, recommendations for how ones code can be more testable, etc. They all come with the assertion that more testable code is more stable, however I can't find any studies which actually demonstrate this. I tried looking for studies evaluating the effect of testable code vs. quality, however the closest I can find is Improving the Testability of Object Oriented Systems, which discusses the relationship between design flaws and testability. Is testable code is actually more stable? And why, or why not? Please back up your answers with references or evidence to back up your claim.

• Letters of recommendation from customers? [closed]

  I am leaving my job soon and am looking for letters of recommendation. My problem is, I've worked more closely with my customers than my project lead (not technical) or manager (the customers usually talk to me first and rarely even if CC my lead if I don't). So in this case, the customer has seen my work more closely than my leadership and can better attest to my abilities, communication skills, and performance. Are recommendations from customers viable, or will they be largely dismissed? Secondarily, can they be more useful than letters from managers that don't really know your work at all? Note: I already have a letter from the only coworker I've really worked with, but I'm looking to get more than one for good measure.

• Which MIME type to compress? and what If I omit the `type` attribute from the HTML?

  Per my request, my webhost had turned mod_deflate ON. In my Cpanel I now have an "Optimize Website" button. Inside that menu I could either choose: "Compress all content" or "Compress the specified MIME types" with the following default MIME types: "text/html text/plain text/xml" Which option should I choose and why? If I choose option 2, which types should I add (is there a recommended list with the exact way they should be written)? According to Google recommendations, I have omitted the type="text/css" attributes from all CSS references, as well as the type="text/javascript" attributes from all script references. Would this hinder the "gzipping" process?
