• Is there an alternative to HTML Web Sockets, now that Firefox 4 has disabled them?

  I've been checking out some of the latest multiplayer engines in HTML all supporting multi-user games (Very nice) - I believe all these engines use Web Sockets for communication. That’s why we’ve decided to disable support for WebSocket in Firefox 4, starting with beta 8 due to a protocol-level security issue. Beta 7 of Firefox has support for the -76 version of the protocol, the same version that’s included with Chrome and Safari. Beta 8 of Firefox 4 will remove that support. Anne van Kesteren of Opera also announced that Opera are dropping Websocket support. We are confident that other browser developers will follow. Source: Websockets Disabled in FireFox 4 I've just come accross the above, so no sockets in Firefox 4 or Opera.... thats big. Is anyone aware of an alternate or is it Chrome or do we need to just sit and wait for the next release of the major browsers. More info : Rocket Engine appears to work with all browsers including IE8 (http://rocketpack.fi/engine/) what will it be using as a method of communication?

• Glimpse: Open Source Web Development

Red Gate is excited about its first major involvement with open source. You may well be wondering, though, why Red Gate is doing this. • Another big year for the ADF EMG at OOW12

  Oracle Open World 2012 has only just started, but in one way it's just finished!  All the ADF EMG's OOW content is over for another year! The unique highlight this year for me was the first ever ADF EMG social night held on Saturday, where I finally had the chance to meet so many ADF community members who I've known over the internet, but never met in person.  What?  You didn't get an invite?  Oh well, better luck next year ;-) Seriously our budget was limited, so in the happy-dictatorship sort of way I had to limit RSVPs to just 40 people.  Hopefully next year we can do something bigger and better for the wider community. Following directly on from the Saturday social night the ADF EMG ran a full day of sessions at the user group Sunday.  I wont go over the content again, but to say thank you very much to all our presenters and helpers, including Gert Poel, Pitier Gillis, Aino Andriessen, Simon Haslam, Ken Mizuta, Lucas Jellema and the FMW roadshow team, Ronald van Luttikhuizen, Guido Schmutz, Luc Bors, Aino Andriessen and Lonneke Dikmans. Also special thanks must go to Doug Cockroft and Bambi Price for their time and effort in organizing the ADF EMG room behind the scenes via the APOUC. To be blunt Doug and Bambi really do deserve serious thanks because they had to wear a lot of Oracle politics behind the scenes to get the rooms organized (oh, and deal with me fretting too! ;-). Finally thanks to all the members and OOW delegates for turning up and supporting the group on the day.  In the end the ADF EMG exists for you, and I hope you found it worthwhile. • Windows Phone 7 event

  This might not be of interest to anyone living outside of the Netherlands, but I still wanted to share this. On march 10th the dutch .net usergroup dotNed (of which I am chairman) organizes a LAN party together with the company Sevensteps. Sevensteps is a big player in the Surface area: they are one of the few companies whose applications are part of the standard tools you get when you buy a Surface unit. They were also present at the CES in Las Vegas earlier this year to introduce the SUR40, as mentioned in my previous post. But they do not only develop software for the Surface, they also do a lot of interesting things on other platforms. One of these is Windows Phone 7, or WP7 in short. Sevensteps and dotNed have joined forces to organize a free full day event where we will develop a WP7 application. The people attending will be developers (experienced and not so experienced on WP7), designers and all other sorts of people you’d expect in a project team. The day will start around 9.00 am and will end when the app is finished. We will form teams of both experienced and not experienced developers so that we can learn from each other. Each team will have their own task to perform, and in the end all parts will be assembled to form a killer WP7 app. As with everything that dotNed does this event is free for everyone. Microsoft will pay for dinner, Sevensteps will provide the room, lunch and ideas (and their expertise of course) and the rest is up to us! One announcement during the presentation was the plan to move m2e-wtp plugin into the m2e project at Eclipse. The project proposal was posted yesterday afternoon for those who are interested - http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/technology.m2e.m2e-wtp/. Jason said that m2e-wtp will not make it into the m2e Juno release but they expect the code to be transitioned over to Eclipse over the next six months. Getting the maven and wtp project models to play nicely together has been an issue for quite some time for our users. Hopefully this is a good step toward resolving those issues.

• Enable Soap for PHP 5.5.x on CentOS 6.5

  Unfortunately I have to support soap on my server for the Fedex webservice. I recompiled PHP enabling support and it works via CLI but not PHP-fpm. They both point to the same ini file and both show the module loaded, but only CLI shows the configuration values. • What would cause an IIS6 website to be unavailable remotely randomly for a few minutes at a time?

  Website is served by iis6 on windows server 2003. Never saw this problem once for months in beta. We made the new site live yesterday - its getting more traffic than in beta but not that much - resource utilization on the server and speed are fine. Today the site has been unavailable remotely a few (4?) times for a few minutes at a time. If you visit any page on the site - nothing is ever returned and eventually the request times out. While this is happening - I can connect to the server via remote desktop and the site loads fine from the live url when running a browser on the server locally. Other websites on the server continiue to function fine the entire time (using the same instance of iis, different app pools). Other computers on the same network can't access the website either. Other than not serving content - the server seems to behave normally - scheduled jobs in our custom job system continue to run, etc. We've looked at the iis logs quickly and we don't see any traffic out of the ordinary - no traffic spikes, etc. Any ideas?   I'm trying to setup Apache(2.2.3) to run two websites with SSL using both different domains and IP addresses. Both websites run fine on port 80 but when I tried to enable SSL for website2 I get a ssl_error_bad_cert_domain error; website2 picks up the SSL cert for website1. • Practical guide to programming paradigms ?

  I think I might be misunderstanding the whole thing and I am looking for some programming wisdom. When faced with a programming challenge, I feel the most important question is "which programming paradigm(s) are better suited to handle it, and how to apply them". A distant second is "which language to use". Yet it seems that most of the programming related content I stumble upon on the Internet has it exactly backwards and focuses mostly on the language choice. An object-oriented solution is fundamentaly the same, whether it's implemented in c++, Java or PHP... So where is the paradigm centered content? Where is the "practical guide to programming paradigms and implementations" and other literature helping bringing real-world and programming concepts together? Note: I already know about "Programming Paradigms for Dummies: What Every Programmer Should Know" from Peter Van Roy.

  Currently there is (afaik) one completed Clojure book available: Programming Clojure by Stuart Halloway. Two are being written and partially available at Manning: The Joy of Clojure by Fogus and Houser Clojure in Action by Amit Rathore Another one is about to be published in May: Practical Clojure (The Definitive Guide) by Luke Van der Hart Are these books more or less the same and meant as a general introduction to Clojure? Does it make sense to buy them all, or is there a risk of having three very similar books? Will there be books that go into more specialized areas of Clojure and targetted for 'intermediate' or 'advanced' Clojure programmers?

• Which is faster in Python: x**.5 or math.sqrt(x)?

  I've been wondering this for some time. As the title say, which is faster, the actual function or simply raising to the half power? UPDATE This is not a matter of premature optimization. This is simply a question of how the underlying code actually works. What is the theory of how Python code works? I sent Guido van Rossum an email cause I really wanted to know the differences in these methods. My email: There are at least 3 ways to do a square root in Python: math.sqrt, the '**' operator and pow(x,.5). I'm just curious as to the differences in the implementation of each of these. When it comes to efficiency which is better? His response: pow and ** are equivalent; math.sqrt doesn't work for complex numbers, and links to the C sqrt() function. As to which one is faster, I have no idea...

  Hey all, I'm looking for some ANTLR examples, I tried googling a bit but I found certain things which didn't fit my requirments. I found the Mantra project, but it's statically typed and is 'too' big for me at this moment, then I found 'pie' as interpreter, which is dynamically typed, which what I want, but it uses a syntax-directed interpreter. I'm looking for a pretty small language which is dynamically typed and uses AST's if possible. It doesn't need to be advanced, if it would have classes I would already be very happy.   Hello, I am very crap at jquery, and im having some trouble with the slideUp() and slideDown() animations. I have been working on a vCard design similar to tim van damme's site. here is a the link to the design: link. When you click on the portfolio or work button, the text or image appears first before the div finishes sliding down. I would like the div to slide down first and then show the text... This currently works when you click on the contact button or the home button on the top navigation bar, but does not work for the portfolio button and the work button. I have a hunch that this may not even be a jquery problem, and that its just my bad css code, but I have skimmed through the css code, and changed things like z-index, but that hasnt worked.

• Sharepoint: Is it possible to automate the deployment of a custom CAS policy?

  Hi all, I'm looking for a way to automate the deployment of a custom CAS policy in SharePoint. What i would like to achieve is the following: All assemblies that have been built and signed by our build server (with a secret key) should run in SharePoint under the 'higher than normal' trust level. Now I can manually edit the cas policy files to include something like this: <CodeGroup class="UnionCodeGroup" version="1" PermissionSetName="MyPermissionSet" Name="[My Company public key]" Description="Grants all "> <IMembershipCondition class="StrongNameMembershipCondition" version="1" PublicKeyBlob="[public key goes here]" /> </CodeGroup> And that works great. However, we have several huge sharepoint farms, with many applications running on it. I'd like to avoid having to manually edit all policy files to include this xml snippet. • Writing a search engine

  Hello all, The title might be a bit misleading, but I couldn't figure out a better title. I'm writing a simple search engine which will search on several sites for the specific domain. To be concrete: I'm writing a search engine for hardstyle livesets/aftermovies/tracks. To do I will search on the sites who provide livesets, tracks, and such. The problem here is speed, I need to pass the search query to 5-7 sites, get the results and then use my own algorithm to display the results in a sorted order. I could just "multithread" it, but it's easier said then done so I have a few questions. What would be the best solution to this problem? Should I just multithread/process this application, so I'm going to get a bit of speed-up? Are there any other solutions or I am doing something really wrong? Thanks, William van Doorn

• Haxe app and Gtk-WARNING on linux servers

  Hi! I'm trying a Haxe-compiled solution called FAR (Flash Archiver) created by Edwin Van Rijkom (http://code.google.com/p/vanrijkom-flashlibs/) wich uses a command-line tool for creating compressed archives. When running the FAR tool locally on my ubuntu laptop, everything works fine. When running remotely (terminal as Root) on my Ubuntu and Debian servers, it gives the following error: Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: I've tried to reach Edvin about this, but no response so far. Maybe it has something to do with installation or user rights on the server? Any clue?

• Devision in c# not going the way i expect

  Im trying to write something to get my images to show correctly. I have 2 numbers "breedtePlaatje" and "hoogtePlaatje". When i load those 2 vars with the values i get back "800" and "500" i expect "verH" to be (500 / 800) = 0,625. Tho the value of verH = 0..
