  • Storing datetime in database?

    I'm working on a blog and want to show my posts in eastern time zone. i figured that storing everything UTC would be the proper way. This creates a few challenges though: I have to convert all times from UTC to Eastern. This is not a biggie but adds a lot of code. And the "biggie" is that I use a short-date time to reference the posts by passing in a query, ala blogger. The problem is that there is no way to convert the short date time to the proper UTC date because I'm lacking the posted time info. Hmm, any problem to just storing all dates in eastern time? This would certainly make it easier for the rest of the application but if I needed to change time zones everything would be stored wrong.

  • How does the verbosity of identifiers affect the performance of a programmer?

    I always wondered: Are there any hard facts which would indicate that either shorter or longer identifiers are better? Example: clrscr() opposed to ClearScreen() Short identifiers should be faster to read because there are fewer characters but longer identifiers often better resemble natural language and therefore also should be faster to read. Are there other aspects which suggest either a short or a verbose style? EDIT: Just to clarify: I didn't ask: "What would you do in this case?". I asked for reasons to prefer one over the other, i.e. this is not a poll question. Please, if you can, add some reason on why one would prefer one style over the other.

    Working in ASP.NET (VB), I am trying to develop a simple search results page for my website. The process is as follows: (1) The site's user enters a search phrase; (2) The search results page searched the site's database, and returns the page title as a link, and a short snippet from each search "hit", with the search phrase highlighted. I already have the search part done, and also the "highlighted" part done (using Regex). However, I want to be able to return a short snippet of text, which include the search phrase (a few words before the search phrase, a few after).     I've been asked by my pointy haired boss to educate our new co-ops (interns) in the ways of C#. I have roughly ~30mins to cover the topics of Delegates, Events and Lambda Expressions. The time restriction is rather tight and the topics are broad. Since I'm not a C# guru, I would like some hints and pointers. Since my time is short, what points should I cover with respect to the three topics listed above? What are some good Do's and Dont's when using those three things? I might have time for a short Lambda Expr demo. What is the most common use of LExpr (probably a Select().Where() statement on an enumerable??) that I could demo? Thanks.   • Getting a senior job without the yrs of experience asked for

    Hi, My manager in my current company feels that I am selling myself short by getting another job - but as a senior. He feels I have sold myself short and missing out on a good salary by getting another junior job, given how he (my manager) has a lot of faith in my development skills. However, I have not worked long enough for a proper senior job (5 years +) but then the senior developer we do have in my current company isn't given senior tasks (judged by difficulty).   • boost.asio's socket's recieve/send functions are bad?

    Data may be read from or written to a connected TCP socket using the receive(), async_receive(), send() or async_send() member functions. However, as these could result in short writes or reads, an application will typically use the following operations instead: read(), async_read(), write() and async_write(). I don't really understand that remark as read(), async_read(), write() and async_write() can also end up in short writes or reads, right? Why are those functions not the same? Should I use them at all? Can someone clarify that remark for me?

  • Pomodoro technique & other ways to increase personal productivity? Any ideas?

    I recently came across Pomodoro Technique as a way to increase productivity, get in the zone, and in general feel a sense of accomplishment at setting some short programming goals and achieving them. So far I have enjoyed it and the sense of accomplishment I get after seeing a bunch of short goals add up at the end of the day to a lot of work done on a programming project. I'm looking for other ideas similar or not to the pomodoro technique to add a little variety to achieving goals, personal productivity, get in the programming zone, etc. Any ideas or techniques that are expressed formally such as in the pomodoro paper, that are not trite fluffy maxims?

    I need to store data to represent this: Water + Fire = Steam Water + Earth = Mud Mud + Fire = Rock The goal is the following: I have draggable HTML divs, and when <div id="Fire"> and <div id="Mud"> overlap, I add <div id="Rock"> to the screen. Ever played Alchemy on iPhone or Android? Same stuff Right now, the way I'm doing this is a JS object : var stuff = { 'Steam' : { needs: [ 'Water', 'Fire'] }, 'Mud' : { needs: [ 'Water', 'Earth'] }, 'Rock' : { needs: [ 'Mud', 'Fire'] }, // etc... }; and every time a div overlaps with another one, I traverse the object keys and check the 'needs' array. I can deal with that structure but I was wondering if I could do any better? Edit: I should add that I also need to store a few other things, like a short description or an icon name.     When Fiddler is not on Mac OS X or Ubuntu, and if we don't install/use Wireshark or any other more heavy duty tools, what is a way to use tcpdump so that 1) It can print out GET /foo/bar HTTP/1.1 [request content in RAW text] [response content in RAW text] POST /foo/... HTTP/1.1 this should be able to be done by tcpdump or by using tcpdump in a short shell script or Ruby / Python / Perl script. 2) Actually, it can be neat if a script can output HTML, with GET /foo/bar HTTP/1.1 POST /foo/... HTTP/1.1 on the page, for any browser to display, and then when clicked on any of those lines, it will expand to show the RAW content like (1) above does. Click again and it will hide the details. The expansion UI can be done using jQuery or any JS library. The script may be short... possibly less than 20 lines? Does anybody know how to do it either for (1) or (2)?

    I'm writing code using Twisted, and having trouble coming up with a sensible variable name for my twisted internet deferred's. Here are my candidates: d : Too generic, too short, violates pylint rule C0103. def : Conflicts with function defintion builtin. defer : Conflicts with module twisted.internet.defer deferred : OK but pretty long cb : Still too short, violates pylint C0103, conflicts with many callback method names. cback : Too Weird? callback : Conflicts with method Deferred.callback() I'm looking for other suggestions. It seems like most of the Twisted example code uses "d" which is fine for simple invocations, but when you're passing Deferred's around to methods and storing them as member variables, it's really far too descriptive.

    I want to compress much small strings (about 75-100 length c# string). At the time the dictionary is created I already know all short strings (nearly a trillion). There will no additional short strings in future. I need to extra exactly one string without decompress other strings. Now I am looking for a library or the best way to do the following: Create a dictionary using all strings I have Using this dictionary to compress each string a way to compress one string using the dictionary from 1. I found a good related question, but this is not c# specific. Maybe there is something for c# I do not know, or a fancy library or someone has already done that.   • smartctl -t long isn't finishing

    I been running smartctl -t long on a drive for about 2 days now and it seems to be stalled at 10%. short and conveyance both passed. I have to send 1 of 2 drives purchased back I found badblocks with badblocks (none on this drive and I'ts made over a pass already).   • Forwarding rsyslog to syslog-ng, with FQDN and facility separation

    I'm attempting to configure my rsyslog clients to forward messages to my syslog-ng log repository systems. Forwarding messages works "out of the box", but my clients are logging short names, not FQDNs. As a result the messages on the syslog repo use short names as well, which is a problem because one can't determine which system the message originated from easily. My clients get their names through DHCP / DNS. I've tried a number of solutions trying to get this working, but without success. I'm using rsyslog 4.6.2 and syslog-ng 3.2.5. I've tried setting $PreserveFQDN on as the first directive in /etc/rsyslog.conf (and restarting rsyslog of course). It seems to have no effect. hostname --fqdn on the client returns the proper FQDN, so the problem isn't whether the system can actually figure out its own FQDN. $LocalHostName <fqdn> looked promising, but this directive isn't available in my version of rsyslog (Available since 4.7.4+, 5.7.3+, 6.1.3+). Upgrading isn't an option at the moment. Configuring the syslog-ng server to populate names based on reverse lookups via DNS isn't an option. There are complexities with reverse DNS and the public cloud. Specifying for the forwarder to use a custom template seems like a viable option at first glance. I can specify the following, which causes local logging to begin using the FQDN on the syslog-ng repo. $template MyTemplate, "%timestamp% <FQDN> %syslogtag%%msg%" $ActionForwardDefaultTemplate MyTemplate However, when I put this in place syslog-ng seems to be unable to categorize messages by facility or priority. Messages come in as FQDN, but everything is put in to user.log. When I don't use the custom template, messages are properly categorized under facility and priority, but with the short name. So, in summary, if I manually trick rsyslog into including the FQDN, priority and facility becomes lost details to syslog-ng.   • Using Unity – Part 1

    I have been going through implementing some IoC pattern using Unity and so I decided to share my learnings (I know that’s not an English word, but you get the point). Ok, so I have an ASP.net project named ProductWeb and a class library called ProductModel. In the model library, I have a class called Product: 1: public class Product 2: { 3: public string Name { get; set; } 4: public string Description { get; set; } 5:  6: public Product() 7: { 8: Name = "iPad"; 9: Description = "Not just a reader!"; 10: } 11:  12: public string WriteProductDetails() 13: { 14: return string.Format("Name: {0} Description: {1}", Name, Description); 15: } 16: } In the Page_Load event of the default.aspx, I’ll need something like: 1: Product product = new Product(); 2: productDetailsLabel.Text = product.WriteProductDetails(); Now, let’s go ‘Unity’fy this application. I assume you have all the bits for the pattern. If not, get it from here. I found this schematic representation of Unity pattern from the above link. This image might not make much sense to you now, but as we proceed, things will get better. The first step to implement the Inversion of Control pattern is to create interfaces that your types will implement. An IProduct interface is added to the ProductModel project. 1: public interface IProduct 2: { 3: string WriteProductDetails(); 4: } Let’s make our Product class to implement the IProduct interface. The application will compile and run as before despite the changes made. Add the following references to your web project: Microsoft.Practices.Unity Microsoft.Practices.Unity.Configuration Microsoft.Practices.Unity.StaticFactory Microsoft.Practices.ObjectBuilder2 We need to add a few lines to the web.config file. The line below tells what version of Unity pattern we’ll be using. 1: <configSections> 2: <section name="unity" type="Microsoft.Practices.Unity.Configuration.UnityConfigurationSection, Microsoft.Practices.Unity.Configuration, Version=1.2.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35"/> 3: </configSections> Add another block with the same name as the section name declared above – ‘unity’. 1: <unity> 2: <typeAliases> 3: <!--Custom object types--> 4: <typeAlias alias="IProduct" type="ProductModel.IProduct, ProductModel"/> 5: <typeAlias alias="Product" type="ProductModel.Product, ProductModel"/> 6: </typeAliases> 7: <containers> 8: <container name="unityContainer"> 9: <types> 10: <type type="IProduct" mapTo="Product"/> 11: </types> 12: </container> 13: </containers> 14: </unity> From the Unity Configuration schematic shown above, you see that the ‘unity’ block has a ‘typeAliases’ and a ‘containers’ segment. The typeAlias element gives a ‘short-name’ for a type. This ‘short-name’ can be used to point to this type any where in the configuration file (web.config in our case, but all this information could be coming from an external xml file as well). The container element holds all the mapping information. This container is referenced through its name attribute in the code and you can have multiple of these container elements in the containers segment. The ‘type’ element in line 10 basically says: ‘When Unity requests to resolve the alias IProduct, return an instance of whatever the short-name of Product points to’. This is the most basic piece of Unity pattern and all of this is accomplished purely through configuration. So, in future you have a change in your model, all you need to do is - implement IProduct on the new model class and - either add a typeAlias for the new type and point the mapTo attribute to the new alias declared - or modify the mapTo attribute of the type element to point to the new alias (as the case may be). Now for the calling code. It’s a good idea to store your unity container details in the Application cache, as this is rarely bound to change and also adds for better performance. The Global.asax.cs file comes for our rescue: 1: protected void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) 2: { 3: // create and populate a new Unity container from configuration 4: IUnityContainer unityContainer = new UnityContainer(); 5: UnityConfigurationSection section = (UnityConfigurationSection)ConfigurationManager.GetSection("unity"); 6: section.Containers["unityContainer"].Configure(unityContainer); 7: Application["UnityContainer"] = unityContainer; 8: } 9:  10: protected void Application_End(object sender, EventArgs e) 11: { 12: Application["UnityContainer"] = null; 13: } All this says is: create an instance of UnityContainer() and read the ‘unity’ section from the configSections segment of the web.config file. Then get the container named ‘unityContainer’ and store it in the Application cache. In my code-behind file, I’ll make use of this UnityContainer to create an instance of the Product type. 1: public partial class _Default : Page 2: { 3: private IUnityContainer unityContainer; 4: protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) 5: { 6: unityContainer = Application["UnityContainer"] as IUnityContainer; 7: if (unityContainer == null) 8: { 9: productDetailsLabel.Text = "ERROR: Unity Container not populated in Global.asax.<p />"; 10: } 11: else 12: { 13: IProduct productInstance = unityContainer.Resolve<IProduct>(); 14: productDetailsLabel.Text = productInstance.WriteProductDetails(); 15: } 16: } 17: } Looking the ‘else’ block, I’m asking the unityContainer object to resolve the IProduct type. All this does, is to look at the matching type in the container, read its mapTo attribute value, get the full name from the alias and create an instance of the Product class. Fabulous!!
