  Hey Folks -- our company is encountering the same recurring problem - email deliverability. A lot of our emails are still getting trapped in yahoo and gmail spam filters. We followed yahoo's best practices guide as well as tips Ive found on serverfault. (setting up DKIM, SPF) And even took the Email Server Test (http://www.allaboutspam.com/email-server-test/) Now my question is: has anyone had success using whitelist solutions like goodmail or EmailReach? Alternatively, Im beginning to think that going with a email delivery service like Mailchimp will save me the headache and future stress of managing our email lists. So whitelist solution or just fork up the money and send via an email delivery service? Thanks!

  I have an externally started FastCGI application that listens on socket '/tmp/foo.sock' and a directory of static files in '/srv/static'. Apache has all needed permissions on the socket and the directories. What I need : All requests starting with '/static' should be handled by apache using the contents of '/srv/static'. All other requests should be handled by the FastCGI application. Here is my current virtual host configuration: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin [email protected] ServerName www.foo.com ServerAlias foo.com Alias /static /srv/static FastCgiExternalServer /* -socket /tmp/foo.sock ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/error.log # Possible values include: debug, info, notice, warn, error, crit, # alert, emerg. According to http://www.fastcgi.com/mod_fastcgi/docs/mod_fastcgi.html#FastCgiExternalServer the first parameter to 'FastCgiExternalServer' should be a 'filename' that when matched will cause apache to delegate the request to the external FastCGI app. What am I missing here?

• Cron Tips for not running cron jobs on holidays (the monday of a three day weekend)

  We have about a one hundred machine set-up with each machine running cron jobs like starting and stopping services and archiving these services' log files at the end of the day to a centralized repository. One headache we have is the three-day weekend (we're closed on holidays). We don't want the services starting up on those days and connecting to our business partner's machines. We currently do this by manually commenting out the most critical jobs and letting a bunch of errors happen all day. Not ideal. Basically if a job has '1-5' set in the day field we want this to mean 'work days' and not Monday to Friday'. We have a database that keeps track of which days are indeed 'work days' So, is it possible to override Cron's day-matching algorithm, or is there some other way to easily set a cron setting to avoid things starting up on a Monday holiday?   Does apache or mod_php cause a SUID flag to be ignored when using the shell_exec command from a web accessed PHP script? I'm trying to allow a web accessible PHP script to rename some files which the apache user does not have write access to. I don't want to give it access to write these, as I only want one controlled script to be able to do this. I'm trying to avoid SUDO and the config needed or the headache/insecurity of using a que called from a privileged users cron, and it seemed like I should be able to use SUID to accomplish this.   Hiya, I'm trying to find an integrated PM solution which will give my business all of the following: Timesheeting so we can track time spent on tasks Holiday planner (integrated with timesheet and project management Project management tool, integrating the above, with milestones, gantt chart, dependancies etc. Forecasting ability (nice to have, but not a requirement) Reporting capability - especially time spent on projects, costs etc. Now yeah, that's quite a lot of functionality, I appreciate that! But currently we've got 3 systems, none of which really talk to each other and it's a right headache. So far we've looked at: OpenWorkbench - not enough features Basecamp - not enough features and too reliant on online MS Project - too expensive? Can anyone throw some other hats into the ring which maybe I've not heard about? Really interested to hear how other people have approached this, it's not an unusual business requirement! Thanks!

• Pass quoted argument string to Start-Process in PowerShell

  Hello I'm trying to very simply run an executable and pass a file path in as the first argument. In DOS, this would be the command: import.exe "C:\Some Path\With\Spaces.txt" By placing the path in quotes, the path is correctly parsed as the first token into the executable. In PowerShell I'm using this: $feeds = dir 'T:\Documents\Company\Product Development\Data foreach ($feed in $feeds) { start -FilePath import.exe -ArgumentList $feed.FullName } The problem with the Start-Process cmdlet in PowerShell is that it uses a string array for arguments, so the path is broken up and sent to the executable as separate tokens. Quotes in PowerShell force $feed.FullName to be treated literally. Double quotes "" make PowerShell not see anything in the argument list. "The argument is null or empty." it tells me. I expect that this is a known headache and has had a known workaround from day one. Thanks Luke

• Rate limiting an internet connection per user

  I've got a friend who has a "rent-by-room" property and includes internet access as part of this. However some tenants are somewhat hogging the internet (i.e. constantly downloading). I was wondering if anyone knows of a fairly easy way of rate limiting each connection to make the system more equitable. A preferred solution would be a cheap piece of hardware or some sort of Linux "appliance". I would rather not have to get an iptables headache if this is avoidable.

I am a software developer I have built an application for a client and am currently hosting it successfully on SliceHost. We are now coming out of Beta and the client wants to have the application within their Firewall, but they do not want to deal with headache of hosting and maintaining the server. Is there a way I can recommend that we put our server at SliceHost within their Firewall? Is that an easy thing to do? If that is not possible, what should I recommend to my client? Thanks! Jonathan

  I have a directory structure composed by: iTunes/Music/${author}/${album}/${song.mp3} I implemented a script to strip my mp3 bitrate to 128 kbps using lame (which works on a single file at time). My script looks like this 'normalize_mp3.sh': #!/bin/bash SAVEIFS=$IFS IFS=$(echo -en "\n\b") for f in *.mp3 do lame --cbr $f __out.mp3 mv __out.mp3 $f done IFS=$SAVEIFS This works fine, if I go folder by folder and execute this command. But I'd like to have a "global" command, like in 4DOS so I can run: $ cd iTunes/Music $ global normalize_mp3.sh and the global command would traverse all subdirs and execute the normalize_mp3.sh to strip all my mp3 in all subfolders. Anyone knows if there is a unix equivalent to the 4dos global command? I tried to play with find -exec but I just managed to get an headache.

• Resize NTFS System Partition on Perc 6/i RAID

  I've inherited a Dell server that is running out of space on C:. I'd like to quickly and painlessly resize the C drive with partitioning software. However, the RAID card is causing me some troubles. I've resized plenty of desktops in my time, but never a server with hardware RAID. Can anyone recommend software that is GUARANTEED to work with the Dell PERC 6/i? Hopefully someone has resized the system partition with this RAID card before! :) Of course, proper backups are available but I'd be more comfortable with a tried and true solution to save the headache of the restore.... • Should I replace libapache2-mod-php5-filter with libapache2-mod-php5 on Debian 6 Apache 2.2.16?

  Upgrading various virtual machines we are having an issue with the Debian package upgrade to version 2.2.16 The upgrade (surprisingly) seems to remove libapache2-mod-php5 replacing it with libapache2-mod-php5-filter. This gave us some headache as the php.ini was pointing to the "old" one and some of the apache.conf conditional module rules stopped working. We can fix all those but we can't figure out if there would be any issues if we just "reversed" this and simply install libapache2-mod-php5 again and load that module instead of the "filter" one or in there is anyway to "alias" a module. I tend to think that the change "has a reason" but after reading apache2 and php5: module or filter I understand the module differences are to do with post delivery security issues.

• Windows 7 Green Load Bar Stuck and never finish loading,

  Here is my issues, which i am currently having, in my windows 7, When i go to one specific folder, .Please take a look, This is not my file, but just to get an idea, there is 10 file max no more than 500 MB, i am not able to remove it, or cut it, or move it, it starts that green bar loading and never finish, The problem is, after getting into this folder, my SONY VAIO starts, overheating and if i did not restart, nothing can stop it to be cool down . I have reinstalled windows 2 weeks ago, i don't think this should be issue regarding it. Please, help me what the hell i should do with this GREEN BAR< to stop this headache,

• How do I import a Flash Catalyst design into Dreamweaver?

  So I made a banner in Flash Catalyst and published it to swf/air file. Now I can't find a way to get it into Dreamweaver. When I hit "Import SWF" and go to browse for it, it doesn't show up. When I publish it to swf, the file is a Jscript script file. I've been looking for tutorials, but I haven't found one for my issue. Currently I am downloading Flash Pro and hoping I can import the Catalyst design into that, then import the Flash Pro design of it into Dreamweaver. I am not very advanced in Catalyst or Dreamweaver, but I do know my way around a bit, and this is causing me one hell of a headache.

  I am using wordpress with wp-super-cache plugin. This plugin automatically created a cache folder in my site for storing the cached files. But unusually it created folder with owner/group 99 99. It was created automatically. Due to this, i am not able to delete that folder or change the CHMOD of that folder. This really a headache. I searched google, but none gave me a good answer. Please help me delete or change the CHMOD of that folder ? I am on Linux server.

• PHP Script causing high CPU

  I have a website which is causing me a major headache. There is one PHP script which is using far to much CPU, this only seem to happen when bots hit the site, I dont want to block all the bots because we need them. I have the the process manager output: Pid Owner Priority CPU % Memory % Command 16943 (Trace) (Kill) specialone 0 99.4 1.0 /usr/bin/php /var/www/specialone/page.php I ran strace -p 16943 on the process but it comes up with nothing. We have 2GB of RAM and the php memory_limit is set to 128M which should be enough. The trouble I have is the PHP code is a Framework and the culprit page.php pulls in a lot of other PHP files so I cant debug the PHP. Is there any way of finding out what the script is doing when its using so much CPU which will help me solve it?

• Lost icons (firefox,notepadpp,fzilla) on Windows 7

  Okay the deal is simple. I lost the icons and see that white icon instead of them in the taskbar which is really annoying. Tried reinstalling Firefox, no use. (Tried checking the firefox icon in the app folder (program files), but same situation there, no icon). OS: Windows 7 x64 up-to-date, every update installed (Maybe related: I installed my PC with a wrong account name. Renamed it. That rename caused much headache since Windows messes with my user folder, bla bla. Now I made a new user, called "S" and I'm using this ever since that incident.)

• Can I make Firefox ignore/interpret font sizes specified in pixels?

  Hi all, I have an 11.1" notebook display with 1366x768 resolution, which gives it a DPI of 141. I'm running GNOME and have configured the DPI. Everything works OK except web browsing - far too many websites specify their font sizes in pixels, which ends up with very small text on a high DPI display. My ideal solution would be for Firefox to interpret an absolute pixel size in terms of normal DPI and display it appropriately for my DPI (eg scale it by 141/96). Obviously this would cause problems on the occasion where graphics had been pixel-aligned with fonts in some way, but I imagine that would cause me far less of a headache than either reading minute text, or scaling the text manually each time. Any suggestions? TIA, Andy

• How to prevent HP Photosmart Essential from launching on removal drive insertion

  My in-laws bought an HP computer loaded with HP junk, and it's giving me a headache. When they insert a camera memory card into their printer, the Auto-Play dialog comes up, but it also launches the HP Photosmart Essential application, which is a piece of trash. It will NOT launch properly just normally from the taskbar, so that makes it pretty useless. I tried uninstalling it, but then when you insert a memory card, a Microsoft Help window comes up saying how to reinstall HP Photosmart Essential!! Is there any way to find the registry key (I assume) that allows a program to be launched when a memory card is inserted?

• Recommendations: Good Network MFP Printer/Scanner

  Hi, We have a small office that is expanding. At the moment we have 1x HP J6424 MFP, shared using it's built in network port. It is now becoming a headache, we have daily problems with people not being able to print or scan, and jobs just sitting in the queue. Or the scanner not being detected. Sometimes people can print but not scan, sometimes scan but not print, sometimes a bit of both. We are also pretty much constantly printing or scanning, or trying to! I would like to get a laser MFP (mono is fine) which works well for scanning a printing over the network with multiple users. Althernativly any recommendations for network scanners (sheet feed and or duplex a bonus). Clients are Windows 7 and Mac. Thanks very much!
