• aticonfig detects all graphics cards, but amdcccle shows the cards as disabled

  I been having the strangest problem since few days ago. I have 3 ATI graphics cards and the aticonfig --list-adapter shows the following output * 0. 01:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series 1. 02:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series 2. 05:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series when i do aticonfig --adapter=all --initial -f it generates the correct X config also. but after rebooting the output only show on primary monitor and when i look in amdcccle it shows the other 2 adapters as disabled. I tried with monitors attached and dummy plugs both but the situation doesn't change. Any idea whats causing this? also right clicking and making the adapter enabled in amdcccle and saving changes causes the X config to only have the adapter section and no screen section. after reboot the situation stays the same.

• Ubuntu 13.04 ERROR: /etc/apt/sources.list not found

  So, I tried uninstalling the LAMP stack I had following the Ubuntu documentation for it. I also manually removed dbconfig-common. Now, I'm unable to run apt-get update. When I do, I get the error message: E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/htp could not be found. After some digging, I've discovered that I no longer even have an /etc/apt/sources.list file. Also, I've received an error, when trying to run: sudo tasksel install lamp-server That aptitude can not be found. Does anyone have an idea of what I can do? I'm not able to find any documentation online that works - all the documentation out there is dated and no longer (or will not) work with 13.04. I followed this link previously prior to posting my question and it did not work for me: How do I fix a "E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/http could not be found." error?

  So I just created a new widget that would show up in a product page in my site. This widget will show several products similar to the product that is displayed in the current page. The purpose is to help users compare similar products. Let's say in the product page A http://domain/products/A The Similar Products widget will show http://domain/products/B http://domain/products/C http://domain/products/D http://domain/products/E My question is how to track this "Product B page were visited X times from Product A page via Similar Product widget"? (And there is also chance that Product B will show up in the widget on Product C page) I have this idea using the Event feature from Google Analytics. But I'm still not sure if it is or what is the common best practice for this.

  The germ for this question came up from a discussion I was having with couple of fellow developers from the industry. Turns out that in a lot of places project managers are wary about complex data structures, and generally insist on whatever exists out-of-the-box from standard library/packages. The general idea seems to be like use a combination of whats already available unless performance is seriously impeded. This helps keeping the code base simple, which to the non-diplomatic would mean "we have high attrition, and newer ones we hire may not be that good". So no bloom filter or skip-lists or splay trees for you CS junkies. So here's the question (again): Whats the most complicated data structure you did or used in office? Helps get a sense of how good/sophisticated real world software are.

  I try to accomplish an deforming physic behaviour for levelsurfaces, but don't get an idea how to start with the implemenation so far. Regardless of the shape from the surface (planes, cubes, spheres…), I want to have small indentations at the positions from game-entitys (players, enemys, objects…). It's kind of complicated to explain, so I illustrated what I'm talking about (here is an example with an sphere): So, the surfaces should be able to deforming themselfs a little bit (to apear like an really soft bed or sofa). My surfaces need probably an high vertices count to get an smooth deforming, but my big problem is the math for calculating this deforming… I'm programming in C/C++ with OpenGL, but will be fine with any advices in the right direction.   I have a site that lists offers, promotions from other websites. Since the offers expire rather quickly I don't save them into my database. I see no point in having a page from 2010 about 30% discount on a certain brand of shoes which isn't availabe anymore. A visitor enters my website; He clicks on the "shoes" category; http://www.mysite.com/shoes/ Here he sees 20 available promotions from different online stores. He clicks on a promotion and gets to a page like this: http://www.mysite.com/shoes/promotions/prada Questions: I use the template promotions.php and list all the promotions. /promotions/prada/ /promotions/otherbrand/ .... What I do is use "noindex, follow" for the links. Is that a good idea? Or should I use rel="canonical" for the promotion page? How do you advise me to handle this from the SEO point of view?

  I have Ubuntu 12.04.02 desktop in my college Lab of around 15 pcs with no internet connection. I used to install packages : sudo apt-get install vim It was just fine. But, now I want to install vim locally(i.e.,using a pendrive or CD drive). Where and how can I accomplish this,as I am new to it.   hope someone can help. I am not extremely computer literate and my brother installed Ubuntu on my Acer net book when my windows crashed irretrievably . I recently (day before yesterday) had a box come up saying an update (i think it was 10 or 11 .something) i followed the instructions to download and install it and now, all my side bar icons have disappeared. I happened upon an Internet connection by chance and have no idea whatsoever how to get them back. This is quite probably a really stupid question and a really easy fix but as i said earlier, i am pretty much a novice, very far from a computer expert! Thanx in advance :o)

  I have a Dell Adaptec 2610SA 6 port SATA RAID PCI card with 3 hard drives on it and everything works fine. I plugged another hard drive to it and the system (Ubuntu 12.04, 64 bit) seems not to recognize it. Strange thing is that, as happened in the past, if I re-install the system, it recognizes the new hardware plugged to RAID card. Of course I don't want to re-install ubuntu each time I plug a new hard drive on my RAID card. Any idea? Thank you in advance

  To setup a laptop owned by a complete PC novice any settings that may become hard to tackle remotely need to be avoided. The laptop will be administrated via SSH. One thing in my list are problems arising from improper wake-ups from suspend or hibernate as they may also affect network accessibility. This is why I thought setting up power management to "shutdown" on closing the laptop lid could be a good idea. However I am not sure if this is a safe way to do. What problems in addition to software not closing properly (and thus not saving their data) could I be faced if I proceeded as planned?

• Ubuntu Server Installer does not detect usb device

  For some time now I am struggling with the 12.04 Ubuntu Server installer. I am trying to execute a clean, CD based install with the mentioned version onto an SD card. For the sake of the simplicity I have taken out the HDD. However, I had to recognise that the "disk detection" phase simply can not find the SDCARD. It says "No disk drive was detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your disk drive, you can select from the list." What is really strange that I have tried the older Ubuntu Server installer (11.04) and this is simply recognising the sdcard... Does anyone have any idea? Many thanks, Peter

• NDIS Driver Filter VS API Hooking

  I've seen many developers asking for "How to intercept in/out HTTP packets ", "How to modify them on the fly". The most "clean" answer I've seen is to make a kernel-mode-driver filter from the scratch (TDI for XP and earlier winx9 or NDIS for NT systems). An other way, is to use a user-mode-driver like Windivert, also Komodia has a great solution (without writing any single code). The idea behind this introduction is just I want to know is API Hooking can be considered as alternative of writing of whole of driver-filter? writing a driver from the scratch is not an easy task, why just not Hooking the HttpSendRequest or any other API used by the browser? There are many free/commercial libraries to do this in a safe manner (eg: EasyHook, Mhook, Nektra..). I'm not the first who ask, there already Sockscap that uses Hook(DLL injection) to change behavior to other applications and force them to use a Socks proxy, also Form grabbing attack 'used by keylogger..

• Panning a 3d viewport in 2d direction with rotated camera

  I am using below code to pan the viewport (action script 3 code using flare3d framework) _mainCamera.x-= Input3D.mouseXSpeed; _mainCamera.z+= Input3D.mouseYSpeed; Where as Input3D.mouse[X|Y]Speed gives the displacement of the mouse on the X/Y axis starting from the position of the last frame. This works perfect if my camera is not rotated. However, if I rotate the camera (x by 30, y by 60) and pan the camera then it goes wrong. Which is actually correctly panning according to the code. But this is not desired and I know I need to do some math to get the correct x/y which I am not aware of it. Can some one help me achieving it? Update: I am getting an Idea but I am not sure how to do it :( Get the mouseX/Y deltas (xd,yd) Get the current camera coords (pos3d) Convert to screen coords (pos2d) Add deltas to screen coords (pos2d+ (xd,yd)) Convert above coords to 3d coords

• is it ok to have 2 sitemaps on 1 website?

  Do I have to have a sitemap page on my index page for bots to read it or can I just have it anywhere on my server? I have a phpbb/wordpress integration and I need 2 sitemaps mods for each one (or I need to have them somehow integrated together into one xml sitemap). Is this possible? Whats my best option? I would have the phpbb one something like this: http://www.example.com/phpbb/sitemap.html and the wordpress one something like this: http://www.example.com/wordpress/sitemap.html and then I would submit both off..but not have the links on my footer to confuse anyone.., the sitemaps would strictly be for search engines. Is this a good idea? what are you thoughts?

So, what significant lost advances that happened on a side track should be revived in the main stream of software? These would be ideas that worked well in their context but a different context appeared and became dominant the context, even though it lacked the idea. It maybe that in the new dominant context one just cannot do something or it requires great effort to be exerted.

• Warning about unavailable repositories

  An icon has recently appeared on my panel with an exclamation mark. The message i get when hovering over this is that the update information is out of date, and that this may be caused by an unavailable repository or a network isssue. My network connection appears to be ok. The message advises i manually check for updates. When i do this, i get the following message: W:Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net///ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found , W:Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net///ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz 404 Not Found , E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. Any idea whats going on?

• Adding PPA on install

  I have a app I am packaging for ubuntu. I don't like the idea that if included in the ubuntu repositories I will have no control over updating that application. I don't want my users stuck on an out dated version for up to 6 months. I also do not want my users to have to manually add a PPA themselves to get updates as the target user will not have the technical know how to do this. Is it OK to have my .deb add a PPA on install. So that I can roll out stable updates to my ubuntu users.

• Write data to SQL Server directly from BizTalk or use external service?

  An external source will be sending us XML data that BizTalk will pick up and transform into an internal schema. We need this data to be loaded into a SQL Server database as we're going to expose some of the data to our web front-end via a custom WCF service. The question is: what is the recommended approach for doing something like this? Options we're considering are having BizTalk write to the database directly or having BizTalk call a custom WCF service which would handle the save operation. Another briefly considered idea was having BizTalk write to an MSMQ and have a custom service pull from there and store it in the database. What are some of the guidelines or questions that should be asked in assessing these options? There are concerns related to overhead from calling the extra service, duplication of efforts if the schema is modified in the future (which it will be to some extent), and simply the best way to design within a service-oriented architecture that we're struggling with.

  I'm having this annoying problem with my Ubuntu 12.04.1, upgraded from 10.04. The thing is that my wireless connection keeps going out of connection every 15-20 minutes, and sometimes I have to reboot my laptop. I've started having this problem about 1 month ago, but back in my 10.04 I had the same problem. If anyone has any idea it would be great.   busybox initramfs prompt while attempting to install from live cd on 2nd hdd I've created a partition in ext3 on my second hdd to intall linux however when i come to boot the CD i get directed to a busybox prompt with no other choice than help. Other topics i've read on the subject where bound to the idea ubuntu has been already installed, and that the partition needs to be just indicated or else... But since i've no ubuntu installed, neither have i any partition that ubuntu should consider like that... How can i go through that?
